She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. The enhanced CD features include musical film excerpts, as well as a video conversation between Goldenthal and star Salma Hayek and text interviews with the composer and director Taymor. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary times.......2007-05-14

I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.

4 out of 5 stars Black Dove.......2007-05-13

Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.

5 out of 5 stars makes me want to dance .......2007-05-07

I really enjoyed the CD, the musical selection is great and it seems very authentic.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy!.......2006-12-30

I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.

5 out of 5 stars FRIDA would be proud.......2006-10-20

Simply perfection. Each song will move you. I dont really even understand Spanish ( only simple conversational Spanish) and it strums my every emotion. I just LOVE it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Addition to My Collection.......2006-10-29

Jordie Savall and Hesprion XX do it again. I've yet to hear a CD of his that I didn't love. Most of my collection of 15th-17th Century music is English, French, German, and Italian, and I am happy to see the Spanish masters taking their place alongside them.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Religious and Profane music from the 15th Century.......2004-02-23

The works on this 2-CD set all come from a single source: a document called "Cancionero de Montecassino" which is believed to contain works composed between 1430 and 1480. Somehow the document has survived down through the centuries; it was almost lost when the Abbey where it was stored was bombed in 1944. Luckily the document survived so that this amazing CD set could be recorded by the - also amazing - Le Capella Reial de Catalunya.

This CD is the second in a series entitled "Musicas Reales", the first of which being "Carlos V" containing works mainly from the 16th century. If you enjoyed that one, then "Alfons V el Magnanim" will be a welcome addition to your CD spinner.

There is beautiful polyphony, harmony, pieces for single and multiple voices, trumpets, violins, and much much more all packed into 2 CDs that run over an hour each (CD1 is over 71 minutes long, CD2 is over 74 minutes long, so you get plenty of music for the price). The musicians and choir are stunning, and the music will stick with you long after the CDs stop rotating.

The first CD focuses on the Religious music contained in the Cancionero de Montecassino, and is thus more subdued and ethereal than the second CD which contains profane music from the same source. The second CD has some uppidty tunes and the mood is drastically different from the relatively more subdued first CD. The CDs together represent a wide range of the music of the 15th century. Alfons V made Naples his homebase, and from this city he attracted musicians from all over - what was then known as - "the world". Thus, this collection is really an amalgam of many styles and contains music sung in many languages. The CD booklet contains much information about Alfons V, the Cancionero de Montecassino, and the music on these CDs (in 6 languages, which is typical for Alia Vox). This collection is well worth the price and will reward many listenings for any fan of early Renaissance music.

Don't get this CD. Instead, get "Music for the Spanish Kings," also from Virgin. The latter has two disks for the same price, and one of them is identical to "Viva Rey Ferrando." The booklet in "Viva Rey" is bigger, however, and includes the lyrics.

Secular Renaissance music from Italy and Spain is really delightful stuff, and Hesperion XX or XXI is a top notch ensemble.

I had never bought Christian music for myself. I went to a store and asked for recommendations. This young girl introduced me to Rabito, "Viva la Vida". I'm just purchasing his two other cd's as I really enjoy his music. Not only is it uplifting it's fun to listen to. I guess he would appeal to all ages. My sister heard it and went to buy one too.

    I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars 20th Century Spanish Art Music with Difficult Sound.......2004-12-12

Two cautions here right from the start. One is that this is not “typically Spanish” music of the kind that one normally associates with Spain, despite the title “Viva Espana”. It is twentieth century Spanish art music. Of course, both de Falla and Albéniz were Spaniards and made use of some well-known Spanish themes and dances in their music. But neither of them was interested in reproducing Spanish folk music. De Falla was associated with men like Ravel and Stravinsky, and if you listen to his music you should expect to have to concentrate and not just be entertained by Moorish-sounding dances. In fact, most of the music on this disc sounds like the kind of stuff you would expect to hear at a World Championship Ice-Skating tournament, but not at a Spanish folk dance. If you are looking for the old-world Spanish type of music you should be looking up names like Jordi Savall and his ensemble Hespèrion XX (renamed Hespèrion XXI from 2000 onwards) or El Ayre Espanol.

My other caution is with regard to the sound. Some of the early Naxos discs are very sensitive to the equipment they are played on, and this one definitely belongs to that category. On most of the stereo equipment I have heard it on, this CD sounded singularly pale and unexciting. It was only by chance that I discovered it sounded a lot better on a combination I use occasionally (Sony CDP-XA20ES, NAD Amp C 300, connected by Monitor Rhodos cinch cable, and Philips SBC-HP1000 headphones). This equipment gave the whole disc a much more convincing stereo panorama, but even here the crescendos in Albéniz’s “El Corpus [Christi] en Sevilla” with their bells and tambourines sounded pretty “thick” and undifferentiated. That may be the result of the inferior acoustics at the recording location in Bratislava, Slovakia; or it may be that Naxos was just being rather thrifty at its recording sessions. But whatever the reason, you should know that this disc needs the right equipment to sound anything like what producer Martin Sauer wanted you to hear.

Oh, one other curiosity. The lexicon of orchestral music that I use says that Albéniz’s “Iberia” suite consists of only four movements of which the third is “El Puerto”. This Naxos edition claims, however, that conductor Arbos orchestrated eight movements, and the third one played here is entitled “Triana”. Spanish music buffs may be able to sort that one out.

Having said all that, this is music that is worth knowing; some of it has been re-recorded by Naxos with newer and, presumably, better technology.
