Best of the Best.......2006-02-01

I believe I own every album Marc Anthony has released and this is my absolute favorite. I love every selection and can understand why he is called "The Salsa King." When he sings a ballad, you feel the emotion and your heart is touched. But when he sings salsa, your feet will itch to dance! All of these cuts are in Spanish, but you'll enjoy this collection whether you speak the language or not.

I like all the songs in this CD. The music is amazing. You will feel like dancing while listening. Two of the songs are not salsa, but there are good too. You can listen to the whole CD without skipping any songs. This is a 'must have' if you like salsa. It does not matter if you speak Spanish or not.

A remarkable album - loved by this Gringo, too!.......2003-10-20

To put this remarkable album in perspective, let me start by stating the entirety of my Spanish training came from Sesame Street. Marc Anthony could be singing about rings around the bathtub for all I know. But man, bathtub rings have never sounded better!

In all seriousness, CONTRA LA CORRIENTE (which a Spanish-speaking friend translated for me as "Against the Flow") has become one of my favorite albums. It is a fine example of excellent composition, performance, and engineering, making for one outstanding sonic experience. Marc Anthony's album falls within the "Latin Music" catagory (of course), but his songs are musically interesting enough to transcend that label. His vocal delivery is passionate and expressive enough to evoke emotions in me, and I don't even know what he's singing about! (Special kudos to his trio of backup vocalists - you guys are so tight in your harmonies that you grabbed my attention and are still my favorite aspect of the album.)

Mr. Anthony surrounded himself with excellent musicians and every performance from the horns to the piano to the multiple percussionists play in tight collaboration and yet are easily distinguishable from each other. One can recognize the extraordinary audio engineering from this as well, as every instrument and vocal is in perfect balance with everything else - nothing draws attention to itself, it only adds to the ensemble. This makes for enjoyable repeat listens as one can make new discoveries with subsequent spins.

With the possibe exception of the final track (where the music style changes from straight Latin to a pseudo-latin-pop), there are no "throw-away" pieces. Each song on CONTRA LA CORRIENTE is distinct and worthwhile, therefore you'll be getting your money's worth with this album. One additional bonus: because this is not a traditional "pop" album, it's not going out of style any time soon.

CONTRA LA CORRIENTE gets my highest recommendation for those seeking an excellent album, regardless of any "Latino" label. If you only own one Spanish-language album, you'd do very well with CONTRA LA CORRIENTE. CONTRA LA CORRIENTE also stands up to the scrutiny of my Latino friends, with many stating this album is a favorite lyrically as well as musically. In short, this one wears well on everybody!

My favorite Reggaeton CD........2006-07-13

I was living in PR in the 90s when Reggaeton started and I have a large collection of Reggaeton but this album and the two albums called Mas Flow by Luny Tunes and the one album Noriega does with the Luny Tunes are the best Reggaeton albums I own. I've been waiting for years now for Noriega to come out with another album but he hasn't yet.
Noriega, like the Luny Tunes, are not artists, their DJs, and they mix music for the top artists on the island. If you are curious about Reggaeton (which is spanish Dancehall Reggae) then pick up this album and you will love it.

Una palabra... Wow! Este cd es otro de los mejores del año. Para aquellos que no lo saben, Noriega ha sido uno de los unicos, si es q no lo es, unico de los DJs del genero que se ha graduado y tiene un Diploma de Musica. Noriega si tiene talento para esto y se graduo de el. So como quien dice, Noriega es quien realmente hacia el Trio de "Luny Tunes y Noriega", pero volviendo al tema. El cd es un tremendo cd. Contiene sus 22 canciones y toditas estan brutales. Todas se pueden escuchar y escuchar una y otra ves sin cansarte porq valen la pena escuchar. Todas fueron producidas perfectamente. Las pistas son excelentes y el cambio de flow de cada artista mejor todavia. Algo nuevo en el genero. Tiene hasta una una version de la cancion de Ivy Queen en Salsa, que quedo fuera de liga tambien. En conclucion, el cd es uno de los mejores del año. No se arrepentiran al comprarlo...

I'd have to say this is one of the best reggaeton productions since "Lunytunes - Mas Flow". I mean it has a little of everything in it and all the lyrics composed by Noriega are just awesome. There isnt one song on this cd that i dont like, so i recommend it to any one who seriously like reggaeton.

If you are of Hispanic heritage, you don't have to read this review because you already know the great Marc Anthony. For everyone else, if you are interested in hearing one of the most amazing voices in any musical genre, buy this CD. It is simply Marc Anthony's best. Please don't buy one of his English CDs -- they are terrible (the songs are weak, the productions are sappy and Marc's enthusiam is lacking). However, Contra la Corriente shines. All the tracks are first rate. Trust me. I don't speak Spanish, but I love Salsa! And this is one of my all-time favorites. The beats are infectious, the melodies are powerful and his voice is unmatched. I'm trying to recommend a few tracks, but I just can't -- I recommend all of them! Salsa purists will love the title cut, balad lovers will cry during No Me Conoses and Suceden. If you want to know what passion sounds like, La Luna Sobre Nuestro Amor will make you feel like you've never felt before. I only wish Marc Anthony would stop making English albums and Spanish pop, and make more Contra la Corrientes! BUY THIS CD. If for some impossible, crazy reason you don't like it, I'll buy it off you!

Marc Anthony's Spanish language albums are usually exceptional and unique but he really took his talent an extra mile here and this is a show case of one of best salsa albums produced in the nineties. Everything in Contra la Corriente is on point- the voice, the acoustics, the lyrics and the emotion. What can I say this is exceptional salsa by an exceptional artist. This is a great album for true and new salsa fans, all the songs are great for listening and dancing (yes, although it's not fast salsa). My ultimate favorites on this cd are: Y hubo alguien, Contra la corriente, and Me voy a regalar. This is a very special album, I don't think the artist himself can top this one. In a nutshell- beautiful salsa!

Any doubt why he got a Grammy for this album? Just listen to it. This is the first musc from Marc Anthony I ever heard and I was instantly hooked. His sound just took my breath away. His vioce soars...and the brass is killer! Salsa is at its best when it makes your heart race and your breath heavy...and this accomplishes that goal very capably. This album reflects the work of a very talented young man who is an incredible force in slsa today. Listen to the album and you'll know why.

...el reggeatón no volvera a ser el mismo, jamás. En la increible producción "Contra la Corriente" Este ingenioso compositor/productor une lo contagioso y lo ritmico del reggeaton con tecnicas de composicion de varios generos de la musica pop, creando un anticipo de lo que luego será la música pop Latino-Americana. Comenzando por las canciones, la produccion, los arreglos, los temas y hasta en la caratula, "Contra la Corriente", hace honor a su titulo, dejando atras las demás producciones puertorriqueñas para convertirsen en una produción internacional. Noriega, no solo nos entrega una producción para los seguidores del genero del Rap y Reggae, sino tambien para todos lo que negativamente critican este genero, desplazando en 23 canciones, arreglos musicales que dejaran a Emilio Estefan y Robi Draco Rosa, rascandose la cabeza. El CD esta más que a fuego... no te vas a arrepentir.
