The Soda Masterpiece.......2007-06-02

I was introduced to SS by MTV, of all things. I remember loving the romanticism of Doble Vida, particularly "La Ciudad de la Furia", and later on Canción Animal's more streamlined, rock sound. "Me Sueles Dejarme Solo", with its Rush inspired chord progression (Working Man, anyone?) told me that these guys could rock. But nothing prepared me for the sonic burst of Dynamo. To say that I was floored is an understatement.

This is Soda's best album because it shows a band at the cusp of its abilities. The songwriting was excellent and the execution was flawless. They took their experimentation to a comfortable plateau and it served the songs, not the other way around. And they rocked.

There's nothing derivative here. Even the percussive guitar playing of the first songs, which recall The Edge's signature sound, or the lyrical bass lines of Primavera O which also suggest U2's influence, don't say anything other than this is a Soda record.

This is not for everybody, but if you're into sophisticated rock music (and this may require multiple hearings) get this album. Even if you don't understand the lyrics.

I love the early work of Soda Stereo, and I must say Dynamo is different. In my opinion you either love it, or hate it. In my case, I sure love it. I love the work Cerati is doing now, and I still love all of Soda. Listen to it w/ an open mind, and you will know what I mean.

A masterpiece.......2006-12-30

"Dynamo" is one of the most underrated Spanish rock albums of all time. Gustavo Cerati took a more electonic approach to this LP, departing from the more traditional rock of "Cancion Animal".

"Dynamo" was produced far from Grunge madness, so the overall sound has more British influences. I've never heard a song like "Secuencia inicial", one would never guess when that song was produced. "Toma la ruta" also follows that example. "En remolinos" is a superbly excellent song. "Primavera 0" is fast and crazy, but not Grungy. Other great songs include "Luna roja", "Fue", and "Claroscuro".

Excellent but... innovative?.......2006-08-28

This is an excellent and mature album, clearly the best this argentinian group ever made, and quite possibly one of the best ever in the annals of the history of rock....
But the signature sound of this album (the layered guitars) came 2 years after MBV's Loveless, which is considered by many as the most influential album of the 90's, and deservedly so. I am all for giving credit where it's due, though of course I cannot know if Cerati listened to MBV beforehand; songs like Ameba, En remolinos and Luna roja, could have perfectly fit into a Kevin Shields' album from the early 90's from a stylistic point of view; but certainly Cerati's prowess for arranging melodies is unmatched in any language.

The best latin Rock and Roll disc Ever.......2005-06-13

Simply beautiful, you can listen to it in replay CD for hours... As the cd cover shows it's as loopable as you heart beating. ;) Way ahead for his time, Soda Stereo showed why they still are one of the best Rock and Roll bands in the world. If you liked U2's POP upbeating style, this is for you. Thanks God for the spinning. Gira el mundo. Gira Dios.

fantastic album.......2005-01-29

I have to agree with most of the reviews that I have seen about this album. Dynamo by Soda Stereo is probably the best of the band since it represents the peak of the experimentation phase. Dynamo brakes the traditional rock of the 80s and mixes it with techno and other instruments that were not used before. IMHO this is one of the best albums of Latin American rock, especially if we take into account that it was recorded in 1992. Dynamo represents the most experimental, -yet of incredible high quality- album of the greatest latin american band. Extremely recommended.

Album Description

An Englishman, an American and a Welshman walked into a bar. The bar was in Miami during the 2001 Winter Music Conference. They were all musicians and found they had more in common than they expected; a love of the demented golden era of great Hollywood actresses, like Garland, Monroe and Peggy Lee as well as contemporary electronica.

They set up camp in the mountains of Wales and embarked on a musical journey that took them far back into their past. Their album Remember is a creative musical documentary depicting the essence of what it is like to remember.

Between them they've been awarded four Welsh Music Academy Awards, and a nomination for Best Live Act. At a time in the music world where many acts are jumping on the latest bandwagon, Dynamo Dresden have stood their ground to create a truly unique soundtrack.

I saw this band in NC .......2006-01-02

I saw this band in NC about a year ago and have finally tracked down the album. If you're into the Air album Moon Safari, the Avalanches or Groove Armada then I can highly recommend this. The only difference is that the Dynamo Dresden singer is way better.

Does not do Monica complete justice........2006-03-14

This is (to my knowledge) Monica's first best-of compilation, spanning four discs. Inevitably, the set list varies from what her fans might have put together. Of course, you can't include everything, but there are a couple of glaring omissions. Here is what was included from each of her four studio albums:

SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM: Her greatest hit, El Amor Coloca, along with Sola, and Supernatural. The fact that Solo Se Vive Una Vez was left out is the biggest shortcoming of this compilation. How did Supernatural make the cut, and not Solo Se Vive Una Vez, which was a bona fide hit?

PALABRA DE MUJER: Thankfully, the glorious quartet of Desatame, Aprender El Amor, Pantera en Libertad, and Las Campanas Del Amor is left intact. If you ever wanted proof of what makes Monica Naranjo a great artist, the evidence is right here. Las Campanas Del Amor is one of my very favorites. Also, there is Tu Y Yo Volveremos Al Amor, something unlike anything she has done before, another favorite. In addition, there are two ballads, a torch one (Amame o Dejame), and a sweet one (Empiezo a Recordarte). You can argue with the bias in favor of Palabra de Mujer, but you can't argue with the selections.

MINAJE: Monica's tribute album to Mina, one that turned off a lot of her fans. I personally think she should have waited until she had another album or two under her belt before she did this tribute. Anyhow, the excerpts are Sobrevivire, Enamorada, and Seguire Sin Ti. The latter two are the Spanish-only renditions, instead of the English/Spanglish ones from the studio album, a definite plus. This is a big reason to buy Coleccion Privada. On the minus side, they did not include the bonus remix of Sobrevivire, a real shame. I don't like the album version

CHICAS MALAS: The title track, No Voy a Llorar, No Puedo Seguir, and Sacrificio. Chicas Malas (the song) is my least favorite MN single. I am mad that they mixed No Voy a Llorar- the album version is just perfect, and they ruined it. No Puedo Seguir adds a little spice to the mix. Sacrificio is, hands down, a first-class MN song. It competes with Las Campanas del Amor as my very favorite. It would have been nice if they included Liberame, a ballad that is a favorite among fans. And No Cambies is another fine ballad that got left out.

Oh yes, there is Enamorada de Ti, a decent dance-oriented track that isn't Monica's greatest, but not filler, either.

The second disc is a collection of remixes. I think they are terrible, and not worthy of La Pantera. Instead of a bonus remix disc, they should have expanded the best-of collection. One disc for uptempo/dance songs, and one for ballads, plus a couple of rarities for good measure.

Great collection..but very biased.......2006-03-11

I'm glad that Monica Naranjo finally has a collection of her singles AND the added bonus of compiling her dance remixes over the span of her 10 year career.

However, this collection is incredibly biased to her one successful album in Spain. Out of the 18 tracks on this CD, 7 of them are from her 1997 album "Palabra de mujer", which was her breakout album in her native country Spain. Her debut album from 1994 "Monica Naranjo" was a huge hit in Latin America, but this collection only includes 3 songs from this CD. Not to mention her fantastic album "Minage" from 2000, which consisted of covers of Mina (Italian singer) and 2 non mina songs. They only included 3 songs from that album.

This CD is worth it for the new song "Enamorada", which apparently was a leftover track from the "Chicas Malas" sessions. Don't get me wrong, all the songs on this collection are great, but Monica has alot more to offer than just one album, and the purpose of a compilation is to expose the range of an artists catalog and not just market one album. If that was their intention, then simply repackage "Palabra De Mujer".

If you're looking for a place to start on Monica's work, pick up this CD AND her debut album. However, for us fans, this collection is incredibly biased and would have been better if they actually included some rarities....like her rare cover of "MacArthur Park" titled "Palabra de mujer", which was recorded but never released, and curiously enough was the title track of her 2nd album but the song was missing. How's that for plausible?

The spanish queen of dance love ballads~.......2006-03-04

Finally a comprehensive collection from Monica Naranjo! I always wondered why this woman isn't famous like Shakira Paulina and Thalia!? I mean if anything this woman is the real deal when it comes to singing and her songs are accessible. oh well, that's the mystery i guess we'll live with for awhile. One thing is for sure is that if you're into dance club songs and love strong heartbreaking ballads then this one's for you! From her edgier work with songs like sobrevivire to the more dance oriented like no voy a llorar to the lovey dovey empiezo a recordarte this collection is pretty much complete! It's also a great place to start if you're just beginning to discover her music.
