Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23
This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.
Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

with an amazing performance.
a cd for any guitar player...this was a guitar Master.......2005-05-22
He plays this wonderfull traditional guitar of 12 strings like noone else...mainly this guitar is used on "Fado" (dark and missing lyrics songs)
He is famouse because of this song "Verdes Anos" and i have to say it's worth this all album!
From what i've heard this cd was offered to Ben Harper in one of his shows here and he got blown away!!!
Rest in peace Carlos..your music will live forever
Glorious and bittersweet.......2005-02-19
Paredes was (alas, he's no longer with us) a virtuoso of the Portuguese guitar, and this album shows his skill as a composer and performer beautifully. "Cancão Verdes Anos" is by itself worth the price of admission.

Favoring a middle ground that lies between robust technique and easy-going melodicism, Canadian guitarist Johannes Linstead continues to cultivate an agreeable, occasionally adventurous pop-flamenco sound on this, his third recording. Linstead, a nimble performer, adds international spice to several of this disc's pieces, particularly in his exchanges with Ukrainian violinist Vasyl Popadiuk (the beckoning Middle Eastern atmosphere heard in "Suenos en Tus Ojos/Dreams in Your Eyes" is a highlight) and in the brassy trumpet lines from Alexis Baro that fuel his upbeat fingerings on "Mango." Linstead even lets a few clouds float through the disc's generally sunny disposition during "A Mi Muerte/To My Death," an interesting minor drama that again showcases Popadiuk. Linstead stumbles only on the seventh and eighth tracks, employing ordinary, simplistic melodies that seem beneath him. While he may not fan the flames as ambitiously as a Jesse Cook, Armik, or Oscar Lopez, Linstead again shows himself to be a guitarist/composer well suited to listeners who prefer the lighter, sunnier side of new flamenco. --Terry WoodAlbum Description
Johannes' third release, Guitarra del Fuego, with all its fiery flair, is so beautiful and suprisingly tender nonetheless. The occasional gypsy violin and passionate rhythm and percussion portray dream-like visions and fantasy-laden romantic themes, nicely offset by fast-paced flourishes blazing from Johannes' well-tempered guitar. While occasional melancholy and pathos tug the heartstrings of the listener, this music brims with life, joy and happiness.Customer Reviews:

Polo Montanez (Fernando Borrego Linares) died in 2002, from injuries sustained in a road accident. Sadly, this weather-beaten Cuban farm worker had only been discovered in 1999. His first album, Guajiro Natural, was released the following year and became a huge hit throughout Latin America, especially in Colombia, where it achieved Platinum status. The present CD was his second recording. Produced in Havana and Paris, it followed a series of triumphant live performances where Polo sold out entire stadiums, winning over audiences who did not usually follow guajiro (peasant) music. And no wonder; his boyishly husky voice and sunny, arpeggiated guitar licks are well-nigh irresistible. Here, he leads a sympathetic crew of journeyman instrumentalists and close-harmony back-up vocalists in 14 tunes and each one is a melody-drenched, dance-inducing delight. Polo comes across as unpretentious, soulful, and warm, a man of the people caught up in the pleasure of everyday music-making. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:
Stunning and addictive..........2004-05-02
I can't believe I'm the first to review this album..........2004-04-30
All fourteen tracks are unique and have infectious, guitar-driven rhythms imbued with Polo's impassioned vocals. The Amazon reviewer said it best; there's a feeling here of unpretentiousness. Polo was a man of the people who enjoyed performing for those who loved his music. His music is truly a godsend, and I'm glad I discovered this hidden treasure in the "World Music" section of my nearest CD store.
I'm sorry to hear of this great musician's passing in 2002. I wasn't aware of Polo's death prior to purchasing this album. But hearing the greatness of this disc only saddens me that he is gone and will no longer be able to grace us with his truly special gift.
If you're a music-enthusiast who takes pride in diversifying his or her collection (like me), you can't go wrong with this purchase.

No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.
He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.
In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.
The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.
Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B00006L6RN or another B000026ZRL.

Product Description
It's one of the interesting paradoxes of music history that during the century-long craze for the 5-course 'Chitarra Spagnuola' which swept Europe around 1600, infecting royalty and commoners alike, with hundreds of books of music written for it by dozens of composers in France and Italy, that almost nothing survives from Spain, its spiritual home. Part of the reason might be the economic and political senility of the Spanish Empire in a constantly progressing state of decay since the end of the 16th century; little music of any kind was published. Another reason might be the evanescent nature of the music itself, coming as it did from an instrument which inhabited the separate worlds of folk and art music. Few guitarists or their activities were documented in Spain because in Spain everyone was a guitarist, and while the quality might range from the dismal scratchings of someone waiting for a shave at the barbershop (where there were always a few guitars hanging on the wall) to the inspired improvisation of a musician in the theatre or at court, the music itself was free and spontaneous, never intended to be notated; part of the internal dialogue of the Spanish people. In any event, we're lucky that three Spanish guitarists of this period did write their music down for publication; Francisco Guerau and Gaspar Sanz in the 17th century, and the subject of the present recording, Santiago de Murcia, in the 18th. Such is the beauty and vitality of what they have left us that it can still give delight today, even as we pensively contemplate all the wonderful sounds that have gone forever, vanished on an evening breeze 300 years past. In order to appreciate Santiago's achievement I need to say a little about his two predecessors, both of them very different. Guerau, who was a choirmaster at the Royal Chapel in Madrid, wrote in a serious, elevated style. His main subject was the Passacalle, an exploration and elaboration of simple chord progressions which Spanish musicians treated with the same respectful attitude that Germans reserved for the Prelude and Fugue. His one publication, the Poema Harmonica of 1694 is one of the high points of 17th century Spanish music. Gaspar Sanz (not employed at court) was an educator, a populariser, and in my opinion, more of an inspired collector of folk music than a composer. He published three tiny how-to books in 1674-5 which are crammed with advice on strings, fingering, figured bass and tunes from Spain and the rest of Europe. He even had a go at writing a fugue on a Spanish folk tune (which, perhaps wisely, only takes up four lines of music). The melodies in the book have such a wonderful energy and spirit that they were reprinted again and again and still figure in guitarist's programmes today.

In this Collection, Paco De Lucia Pays Homage to One of Spain's Most Famous Poets Federico Garcia Lorca.Customer Reviews:
Not flamenco, but good -- or vice versa.......2007-05-05
Lucía at that point had been recognised as a child prodigy (which is why he had a recording contract), but he was not yet what he was to become later; this was eight years before the hit "Entre Dos Aguas" whose massive success was the pivotal point in his career.
So what he recorded then was dictated by the record company, with the predictable results: albums ranging from tedious pot-boilers to minor masterpieces. Several of them consisted of duets with the guitarist Ricardo Modrego -- which is probably the latter's major claim to fame as far as the world outside Spain is concerned. The best of the bunch of Paco's early recordings for my money is "Canciones Andaluzas para dos guitarras" with his brother Ramón de Algeciras, which did (I believe) appear briefly on CD and then sank without trace.
The present album is somewhere in the higher end of the spectrum; the tunes, rescued from obscurity in the 1930's by Spain's best-known poet, are familiar to every Andalusian, and close to the guitarists' native idiom.
Lorca was of course a pianist. The arrangements for two guitars are imaginative and good, aided by possibly the best stereo separation I've heard.
Perhaps surprisingly, and certainly unfortunately, however, on this album Modrego appears the better player. The reason is that Lucía plays a guitar with a rattle on the first string that varies from merely annoying in the lower reaches of the fingerboard to excruciating at the 15th fret (which is used more often than you might think, e.g. on El Vito).
Still, an interesting disc and well worth a listen. The playing time is just under 38 minutes.
Rare, early Paco de Lucia - a must have.......2000-03-23
