5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23

I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.

This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-05-08

I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16

In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.

But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.

Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25

CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

This is a great CD for everyone. Carlos Paredes plays a ten string guitar
with an amazing performance.

5 out of 5 stars a cd for any guitar player...this was a guitar Master.......2005-05-22

Carlos Paredes was a very talented guitar player with lots of soul.....
He plays this wonderfull traditional guitar of 12 strings like noone else...mainly this guitar is used on "Fado" (dark and missing lyrics songs)
He is famouse because of this song "Verdes Anos" and i have to say it's worth this all album!

From what i've heard this cd was offered to Ben Harper in one of his shows here and he got blown away!!!

Rest in peace Carlos..your music will live forever

5 out of 5 stars Glorious and bittersweet.......2005-02-19

Somehow, when you're in the throes of depression, listening to truly great depressing music is a beautiful catharsis. I mean no offense in saying that this album contains truly great depressing music, up there with John Dowland and the best of Chris Isaak.

Paredes was (alas, he's no longer with us) a virtuoso of the Portuguese guitar, and this album shows his skill as a composer and performer beautifully. "Cancão Verdes Anos" is by itself worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars A master of the guitar.......2000-12-30

I have loved great guitar playing all my life and I have to say that Carlos Paredes is one of the best in the world, and definitely of Portugal. This CD exemplifies that great tradition of excellent guitar playing that is present throughout Portugal and now has spread to many other parts of the world. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes to listen to great guitar playing from a man that knows how to play. I would recommend this CD to anyone even if you are not Portuguese, you will not be disappointed.

Favoring a middle ground that lies between robust technique and easy-going melodicism, Canadian guitarist Johannes Linstead continues to cultivate an agreeable, occasionally adventurous pop-flamenco sound on this, his third recording. Linstead, a nimble performer, adds international spice to several of this disc's pieces, particularly in his exchanges with Ukrainian violinist Vasyl Popadiuk (the beckoning Middle Eastern atmosphere heard in "Suenos en Tus Ojos/Dreams in Your Eyes" is a highlight) and in the brassy trumpet lines from Alexis Baro that fuel his upbeat fingerings on "Mango." Linstead even lets a few clouds float through the disc's generally sunny disposition during "A Mi Muerte/To My Death," an interesting minor drama that again showcases Popadiuk. Linstead stumbles only on the seventh and eighth tracks, employing ordinary, simplistic melodies that seem beneath him. While he may not fan the flames as ambitiously as a Jesse Cook, Armik, or Oscar Lopez, Linstead again shows himself to be a guitarist/composer well suited to listeners who prefer the lighter, sunnier side of new flamenco. --Terry Wood

Album Description

Johannes' third release, Guitarra del Fuego, with all its fiery flair, is so beautiful and suprisingly tender nonetheless. The occasional gypsy violin and passionate rhythm and percussion portray dream-like visions and fantasy-laden romantic themes, nicely offset by fast-paced flourishes blazing from Johannes' well-tempered guitar. While occasional melancholy and pathos tug the heartstrings of the listener, this music brims with life, joy and happiness.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great listening.......2007-03-02

I really really enjoyed Lindstead's Sol Luna y Tierra so I ordered Guitarra del Fuego. I also liked this one very much especially now that I have a new sound system in my car. What a difference. His guitar playing comes to life as if he is in the back seat playing only for me while I drive (he is kind of cute too). His music gets me through the freeways of Los Angeles in a much calmer mood, I have reduced the road rage feelings by a good 80%--people have to be doing something VERY stupid for me to get "road-ragey" and finally I must yell something (inside my car). So yeah, Johannes is great and I love it! My friend liked it too and asked me to burn him a CD but I said buy your f... own.

This album's music is well arranged, with a seductive blend of Spanish guitar and violin. I've enjoyed every track, and have recommended his music to my music loving friends!!!

5 out of 5 stars Guitarra del fuego.......2004-11-04

A great CD. Johannes has talent, not false talent like many of today's pop and rap artists, but artistic talent that you can feel. My favorite is "Mango" (number 2). -Nicholas M. Ware, Dartmouth College

Never heard of Johannes, but i am into beautifully struck, composed and melodious guitarras. Tried out "GdF" and I just hafta have it. That's a pretty blazin' and amazing album. Very Nice music! I'll have the world know that my 5-yr old daughter (then) insist i play Track#2 "Mango" every morning when i drive her to kindergarten! No joke, Johannes' music appeals to my little darling too. Way Cool! Thank you, Johannes, I simply adore your hand-crafted music from your famed Pedro Maldonado guitarra. Hope your latest offering released yesterday (ZABUCA) will bowl me and my (now six) daughter all over again.

Polo Montanez (Fernando Borrego Linares) died in 2002, from injuries sustained in a road accident. Sadly, this weather-beaten Cuban farm worker had only been discovered in 1999. His first album, Guajiro Natural, was released the following year and became a huge hit throughout Latin America, especially in Colombia, where it achieved Platinum status. The present CD was his second recording. Produced in Havana and Paris, it followed a series of triumphant live performances where Polo sold out entire stadiums, winning over audiences who did not usually follow guajiro (peasant) music. And no wonder; his boyishly husky voice and sunny, arpeggiated guitar licks are well-nigh irresistible. Here, he leads a sympathetic crew of journeyman instrumentalists and close-harmony back-up vocalists in 14 tunes and each one is a melody-drenched, dance-inducing delight. Polo comes across as unpretentious, soulful, and warm, a man of the people caught up in the pleasure of everyday music-making. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning and addictive..........2004-05-02

This, along with Polo's first album, is some of the most stunning and addictive music I have heard in years. I'm not a huge fan of Cuba music, and I cannot speak Spanish, but Polo's songwriting and voice lift my spirits everytime I hear him. Do yourself a favor. Buy both his CD's ASAP....

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm the first to review this album..........2004-04-30

...but apparently I am. I'm not well-versed with guajiro, but I know good music when I hear it. And this is good music...better yet, GREAT music!

All fourteen tracks are unique and have infectious, guitar-driven rhythms imbued with Polo's impassioned vocals. The Amazon reviewer said it best; there's a feeling here of unpretentiousness. Polo was a man of the people who enjoyed performing for those who loved his music. His music is truly a godsend, and I'm glad I discovered this hidden treasure in the "World Music" section of my nearest CD store.

I'm sorry to hear of this great musician's passing in 2002. I wasn't aware of Polo's death prior to purchasing this album. But hearing the greatness of this disc only saddens me that he is gone and will no longer be able to grace us with his truly special gift.

If you're a music-enthusiast who takes pride in diversifying his or her collection (like me), you can't go wrong with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding music and great value!!.......2006-04-02

Narciso Yepes is my favorite classical guitarist. I was delighted to hear a couple guitar concertos I had never heard before. Ohana, Bacarisse, and Ruiz-Pipo were great discoveries. Again, Yepes is the BEST. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-08-22

The late Narciso Yepes is perhaps my favorite guitarist- Spanish or otherwse. With each of his recordings there is the sense of a madman, master, and poet at one with his instrument. I recently purchased "Guitarra espagnola" and have found endless enjoyment listening critically and as background while I work. This is the perfect "not background music" background music to play when you have guests. You and your guests will find yourself withdrawing from lively conversations to enjoy a poignant, sweet, or sinister moment with the music. This is a compilation of recordings from the past 20 to 30 years. The compositions span from the 17th to 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good but at times varied. The availability of the compilation is very limited. Get it while you can! I also recommend Alirio Diaz and John Williams.

5 out of 5 stars Very Highly Recommended.......2004-05-08

I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.

No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.

He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.

In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.

The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.

Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B00006L6RN or another B000026ZRL.

      Product Description

It's one of the interesting paradoxes of music history that during the century-long craze for the 5-course 'Chitarra Spagnuola' which swept Europe around 1600, infecting royalty and commoners alike, with hundreds of books of music written for it by dozens of composers in France and Italy, that almost nothing survives from Spain, its spiritual home. Part of the reason might be the economic and political senility of the Spanish Empire in a constantly progressing state of decay since the end of the 16th century; little music of any kind was published. Another reason might be the evanescent nature of the music itself, coming as it did from an instrument which inhabited the separate worlds of folk and art music. Few guitarists or their activities were documented in Spain because in Spain everyone was a guitarist, and while the quality might range from the dismal scratchings of someone waiting for a shave at the barbershop (where there were always a few guitars hanging on the wall) to the inspired improvisation of a musician in the theatre or at court, the music itself was free and spontaneous, never intended to be notated; part of the internal dialogue of the Spanish people. In any event, we're lucky that three Spanish guitarists of this period did write their music down for publication; Francisco Guerau and Gaspar Sanz in the 17th century, and the subject of the present recording, Santiago de Murcia, in the 18th. Such is the beauty and vitality of what they have left us that it can still give delight today, even as we pensively contemplate all the wonderful sounds that have gone forever, vanished on an evening breeze 300 years past. In order to appreciate Santiago's achievement I need to say a little about his two predecessors, both of them very different. Guerau, who was a choirmaster at the Royal Chapel in Madrid, wrote in a serious, elevated style. His main subject was the Passacalle, an exploration and elaboration of simple chord progressions which Spanish musicians treated with the same respectful attitude that Germans reserved for the Prelude and Fugue. His one publication, the Poema Harmonica of 1694 is one of the high points of 17th century Spanish music. Gaspar Sanz (not employed at court) was an educator, a populariser, and in my opinion, more of an inspired collector of folk music than a composer. He published three tiny how-to books in 1674-5 which are crammed with advice on strings, fingering, figured bass and tunes from Spain and the rest of Europe. He even had a go at writing a fugue on a Spanish folk tune (which, perhaps wisely, only takes up four lines of music). The melodies in the book have such a wonderful energy and spirit that they were reprinted again and again and still figure in guitarist's programmes today.

4 out of 5 stars Not flamenco, but good -- or vice versa.......2007-05-05

This recording dates from 1965, when Paco de Lucía was 16. It is not Flamenco; rather, it is arrangements of Andalusian folk tunes, which is not the same thing.

Lucía at that point had been recognised as a child prodigy (which is why he had a recording contract), but he was not yet what he was to become later; this was eight years before the hit "Entre Dos Aguas" whose massive success was the pivotal point in his career.

So what he recorded then was dictated by the record company, with the predictable results: albums ranging from tedious pot-boilers to minor masterpieces. Several of them consisted of duets with the guitarist Ricardo Modrego -- which is probably the latter's major claim to fame as far as the world outside Spain is concerned. The best of the bunch of Paco's early recordings for my money is "Canciones Andaluzas para dos guitarras" with his brother Ramón de Algeciras, which did (I believe) appear briefly on CD and then sank without trace.

The present album is somewhere in the higher end of the spectrum; the tunes, rescued from obscurity in the 1930's by Spain's best-known poet, are familiar to every Andalusian, and close to the guitarists' native idiom.

Lorca was of course a pianist. The arrangements for two guitars are imaginative and good, aided by possibly the best stereo separation I've heard.

Perhaps surprisingly, and certainly unfortunately, however, on this album Modrego appears the better player. The reason is that Lucía plays a guitar with a rattle on the first string that varies from merely annoying in the lower reaches of the fingerboard to excruciating at the 15th fret (which is used more often than you might think, e.g. on El Vito).

Still, an interesting disc and well worth a listen. The playing time is just under 38 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Rare, early Paco de Lucia - a must have.......2000-03-23

I wonder why it takes record companies so long to issue CD editions of such rare gems as this. Paco masterfully plays Garcia Lorca's beautiful songs, achieving a very high peak in his career at a very early stage. Classical flamenco guitar as good as it gets.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Studio Recording.......2003-09-18

Unlike some of Arizaga's other recordings this one was produced
by Duende who is known for producing excellent audiophile re-
cordings. From an audiophile's perspective Spanish Eyes, Tequila
Sunrise, Margaritaville and The Words Get in Your Way are truly
outstanding studio production pieces that will literally fill
your whole listening room with music.

The guitars! The guitars! Brothers and Sisters, this is the most emotionally resonant instrumental record I've heard all year. Take it from a jaded New Yorker. Buy it! Buy it now! Tony, you'll always be the man!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding arrangement and quality recording........1999-05-24

I was hesitant when I first orded this CD because I didn't know anything about Anthony Arizaga. I had just started to listen to Latin music because of dance lessons. After hearing this CD, I can't believe what I have been missing all these years. This particular musical arrangement touched my very soul. I will incorporate some of these songs in my dance routines.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-02-20

I like Placido Domingo very much, and the songs of Agustin Lara sung by Mr. Domingo are great, as also the other songs by M. Teresa Lara, Jorge Casas and Julio Hernandez. I really like this album and have it in my car to listen to it over and over again while driving long distances. I think this was a good purchase and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Expressive.......2007-02-17

Agustin Lara made bright and new, without overdone orchestration. Many songs are from the Suite Espanola, and all are beloved by lovers of the Lara bolero, an emotional journey not to be missed. A new sound for a few, that were known in Mexico as performed by Alejandro Algara, a less known lyric tenor. Very bright, and with less slips in the mix than the A. Lara, Suite Espanola CD by Mr. Domingo, titled Bajo El Cielo Espanol, also a great offering by this dramatic performer. This is really another Domingo that is needed by any fan...Singing his own love of Spanish songs in songs by one of the great historical song writers....A Winner, in my opinion!

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening Music.......2000-03-14

A wonderful CD, a hidden treasure, by an artist who has suffered for being born in the Age of Pavarotti. Nobody does this kind of music better than Domingo - you will be transported.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......1999-12-10

This is Placido Domingo at his best--singing love songs in his native language. Very romantic and beautiful songs.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!!!.......1999-10-07

Love the C.D. as every one with the greatest voice ever! Placido Domingo is magnificent! The songs are lovely and the recording is very good.
