5 out of 5 stars Wise words and cool tunes.......2007-03-28

I guess the most obvious way to differentiate Harry Manx from his peers is his use of Indian instruments, and in paricular the Mohan Veena. Well, actually what's unique and very refreshing is the way he integrates those sounds into a fusion of Blues and Americana that remind me of some of the other artists I love, but also stands out from them.
For all the exoticism of the instrumentation, Harry's songs are actually pretty accessible, and like the best songs are a bit mysterious in their actual meaning but give you a feeling that he's really saying something. Don't Take His Name Away is a terrific song about life and death and memory. I wonder who it's about.
Another standout song is A Single Spark, which has the trademark Indian sound mixed with an emotive blues sound and an intriguing, memorable lyric.
There's not a bad song on the album, though It Takes a Tear, a duet with a singer who's not really interesting enough, comes closest to being one you might want to skip past.
I like the production, even though it sounds at times almost too clean and bright for Blues. The production favours the sound of the Indian instruments, and the couple of instrumentals using those instruments sound fantastic.
On the whole, one of the best albums I've heard for some time. I can see I'll be enjoying this one for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Love it and Love Harry Manx.......2007-01-10

I love this CD, I love Harry Manx, he is so blusey and his voice and music is undescrible, I recommend this CD for every blues lover and sitar music lover. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars exotic, yet strangely timeless.......2006-05-17

While most musicians are content to work within the accepted boundaries of their chosen style, lap-slide guitarist Harry Manx likes to color way outside the lines. His crayons? Soulful, raspy vocals, poetic lyrics, and the whining drones and mysterious melisma of Indian music. In addition to picking Hawaiian-style flat-top à la David Lindley, Ben Harper, or Kelly Joe Phelps, Manx plays the mohan veena-a 20-string archtop developed by Indian slide wizard Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. East/West fusions can sometimes sound forced or awkward, but Manx-who studied with Bhatt for five years-dodges that bullet. On Mantras for Madmen, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, tamboura, tabla, and haunting female voices swirl seamlessly around intricate slide melodies, creating an exotic, yet strangely timeless sound. Drawing from blues, ragas, and the story-telling heritage of British Isles folk music, Manx conjures songs that are as bewitching as they are unique.

5 out of 5 stars another level for Harry.......2006-01-20

I've been listening to Manx' blues ever since I caught him in concert here in New Mexico. "Road Ragas" being my favorite until this new release which really showcases his talent at writing songs, let alone the unique Indian instrument (I would write the name but would slaughter the spelling-a sitar/guitar cross)he plays them to. Don't let Mantra in the title sway you into thinking this is true sanskrit mantra (which I also listen to) but I think it is his way of honoring his unique East/West style and he does have a terrific sense of humor which also prevails in his songs. Good go Harry-come back to New Mexico soon!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pure beauty.......2005-09-06

Ever since Charlotte Church turned into a tabloids' darling and a wannabe pop star, there's been a gap opened for a young, sweet-faced soprano. The best bet on filling it seems to be Hayley Westenra, a young singer/dancer from New Zealand.

The result: "Pure," an album that is reminiscent of early Sarah Brightman, back when she did folk songs and showtunes. Westenra sticks close to her classical sound with songs like the delicate "In Trutina" and the traditional New Zealand song "Pokarekare Ana," which is rendered with the backing of a a rather muddled male chorus and some swelling strings.

However, Westenra doesn't neglect more modern songs, and she does well in classical pop as well as straightforward classical. The big difference seems to be a bit of synth and a delicate guitar melody, in songs like the charming "Beat of Your Heart" and dreamy "Why Painted the Moon Black?" It's a smooth, thoroughly sweet crossover effect.

Westenra also eschews the usual round of classical-pop songs, like "Nella Fantasia." I love that song, but it's been done so many times. Instead, she opts for Maori lullabies, Vivaldi ballads, the neglected "Mummer's Dance" and the orchestral cathedral grandeur of "Benedictus." She even covers Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights," adding a modern feel to the finale.

That is not to say that every choice is an excellent one. "Wuthering Heights" has Westenra trying to sound more Bush-ian, while "Amazing Grace" is too simple vocally. Aside from those, her choices of song are excellent -- rich, uplifting and beautiful, and backed by a wide range of orchestral musicians, especially the strings.

There is also an accompanying EP, in which Westenra covers four Christmas ballads, and does them all justice. Her vocals are well suited to the dignified lyrics of songs like "The Mummer's Dance" and "Silent Night," although a bit less for the still-lovely "Mary Did You Know" and "Away in a Manger."

Her vocals themselves are not operatic, but they are strong, clear and sweet, without pretensions or dramatic flourishes. The effect is stunning, more given to magic and sweetness than to keeping to classical standards. Since this was recorded when Westenra was only sixteen, one wonders how good she'll be in ten years.

Despite comparisons to Charlotte Church, Hayley Westenra is more like Sarah Brightman -- a sweet-voiced singer, straddling the fence between classical and pop. An enchanting experience.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A GIFT!.......2004-12-20

I RECEIVED THESE 2 CDS AS A GIFT AND I LISTEN TO THEM FREQUENTLY. HER PERFORMANCE WITH RUSSELL WATSON (ON DVD)ON HIS TOUR IS WONDERFUL. I CAN'T WAIT FOR A NEW ALBUM. WOULD LIKE TO GET HER NEW SONG, BRIDAL BALLAD, FROM THE SOUNDTRACK OF THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

5 out of 5 stars Incredible voice - Incredible CD.......2004-04-29

I recently saw Hayley on TV and had to immediately buy this CD. Her voice is so clear and pure, and her songs are filled with lyrical emotion.

It is an absolutely incredible CD that any music lover should have in their collection. My favorite song is Wuthering Heights.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-04-27

Her album is the best, voice of an angel.......you can totally relakes to her music.

5 out of 5 stars Charlotte is NO match..........2003-12-15

Hayley is just phenomenal. There is no doubt that she surpasses every other female artist in her genre. This CD is astonishing. My two favorite songs are "Heaven" and "Wuthering Heights". The first Hayley Westenra song I ever heard was "Heaven". It would not be the last. Her voice is like that of an angel. She has a smooth, serene sound, and she has an incredible range. If you want a more classical sound, you want her. It's not that gaudy stuff that people generally think of. This stuff has a beat... and it's not pumping with bass. If you're a fan of Sarah Brightman, Josh Groban, Charlotte Church, or Mario Frangoulis... try Hayley Westenra, you won't regret it. I just can't wait 'til she comes to the states... that'll be a good day. She has a few Italian songs, but she's not heavy on the foreign stuff like some of the other artists of Opera / Classical. She's got a wonderful voice for a little girl... I'm a huge fan, Hayley! You roped me in, in about 2 minutes time!

Composer Tim Janis has long straddled the line between contemporary instrumental and classical music. With An American Composer in Concert, he further blurs that line. The first nine tracks of this disc were recorded by the Tim Janis Ensemble in the composer's studio. They're short, majestic, and relaxing instrumentals named after nature themes ("Cape Elizabeth," "The Fallen Leaves of Autumn," "Pacific Wind"). Things pick up slightly during the 10 live tracks that make up the second half of this disc. Recorded at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with the American Symphony Orchestra, these tracks feature luxuriant strings, the occasional pennywhistle solo, and one vocal track (a take on "Amazing Grace" with sweeping orchestrations). As with most Janis efforts, there's nothing groundbreaking here, just soothing music and pleasant melodies. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars December Morning.......2004-10-17

It is just so soothing. I've had the opporturnity to see him in person (sort of) on QVC shopping channel. I can just see his face as he places along with the rest of the group. He looks so peaceful and serene. And that is how I feel listening to his music.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Live Performance from Modern Composer Tim Janis.......2003-04-24

Tim Janis's latest CD is split into two sections; the first 9 tracks feature new works, and the latter 10 tracks are taken from his live performance at the Lincoln Centre (USA) earlier in 2001.

The new tracks are a little repetitive in sound, but there is some quality music within them. Where the CD really takes off, however, is in the live section, which features renditions of his favourite pieces ably supported by the American Symphony Orchestra. Stand-out tracks include "Twin Lights", "Water's Edge" and my favourite of all, "Amazing Grace", featuring the powerful voice of Gwendolyn Leathers supported by some fabulous orchestration.

"White Mountain" deserves a mention of its own for its sheer excellence and beauty. Stunning penny-whistle playing!

These live tracks are taken from Janis's previous releases, including the excellent "Water's Edge" and the now unavailable "Flowers in October".

At over 70 minutes in length, you get a lot of music for your money.

If you enjoy melodic, soothing instrumental music played by a symphony orchestra, this CD may well be the one for you.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but not excellent.......2002-11-22

When I first heard Tim Janis on our local PBS station, I was memerized by his music so I had to get the CD. I'm glad I did but I have to admit when a friend pointed out that all his songs pretty much sounded the same, I had to agree. Maybe as he gets older there will be some more variety, I hope so. He's a very talented young man.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding CD that leaves you wanting more.......2002-03-15

"An American Composer in Concert" is another outstanding CD from Tim Janis. The lush mixture of ensemble and orchestral songs truly transport you to a better place emotionally and mentally. Tim Janis composes the music I've been waiting my whole life to hear, though I didn't know it until I heard it. I'm much more at peace with nature and myself after listening to his music. On this CD, "Blue Hill Bay" is probably my favorite of all Tim Janis' songs, but all the songs on this CD (with the possible exception of a vocal rendition of "Amazing Grace" that doesn't seem to belong) are great. If you haven't heard Tim Janis' music, you owe it to yourself to get this one and listen to it. Since I've found his music grows on people, I guarantee if you listen to your CD 5 times, you'll be hooked like I am and explore his other CD's as well. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible music from an incredible evening..........2001-11-23

I LOVE the music of Tim Janis and this CD is a truly wonderful CD. This CD has georgeous live tracks and extra bonus tracks to make it completely full of breathtaking melodies...I would truly recommend it to anyone who wants to have some beautiful music around the house!

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Newman..........2005-03-29

Nothing else on this disc will surpass the the bold hauntingly beautiful Cathy's theme from the "Wuthering Heights"suite.
We are then given lesser known selections from the 1930s, 40s era
of Alfred Newmans extraordinary film score output. "Prince of Foxes" the Italian renaissance historical novel wasn't even shot in technicolor, but we are given a marvelous panoramic Newman score, complimenting the period costumes and sets. The seductive theme from "David and Bathsheba" is a bit reminicent of R Straus's "Dance of the Seven Vails" but not as beefy in orchestration nor development. "Dragonwyck" is another gothic piece of dark romanticism, with music focusing on eleagant melody with a touch of saddness. In "Prisoner of Zelda" the regal music grandly depicts the the fictional Kingdom of Ruritania. This score was used in 1937 and again in the 1952 remake. Lastly the march from "Brigham Young" ends this disc with the bold determination in music of the Mormon's trek from Illinois to Utah in 1840, and the setting of their domain.
The New Zealand forces are to be commended for their committed playing along with the cinema sonics captured by the engineers. The liner notes list every score Alfred Newman has written from 1930 to "Airport" in 1970.

4 out of 5 stars Must for Wuthering Heights Fans.......2004-10-04

Wonderful tribute to Alfred Newman, the Wuthering Heights suite alone is enough to buy this CD! Beautiful and moving music indeed!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful recording of Newman's early music.......2003-08-07

It has been a long time since a film music recording has captured my imagination and become virtually unforgettable, working its way into my thoughts through the days following my first hearing it. Seldom do I agree with others about the merits of albums released with the usual repeats of themes available on a dozen other recordings. Because of this, I have been accused of being a world-class curmudgeon (among other things) when it comes to preferring faithfulness to a composer+s work, rather than embracing the uninspired and pedantic interpretations we all-too-often get.

It is, therefore, with trepidation -- and with joy -- that I highly recommend to you Koch International+s "Wuthering Heights: A Tribute to Alfred Newman," Richard Kaufman conducting the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The program features Wuthering Heights (12:40), Prince of Foxes (13:19), David and Bathsheba (love theme -- 3:44), Dragonwyck (8:43), The Prisoner of Zenda (7:01), and Brigham Young (5:18).

This album was lovingly produced by the late Tony Thomas, and Edward B. Powell's original orchestrations were preserved throughout. The ambient sound on this disc is wonderful and could serve as a standard for other re-recording projects. Not only are the selections representative of Newman's genius as a film composer, they are performed with impassioned fervor -- and with fidelity to tempo and nuance rarely achieved by other interpreters of Newman's work.

The CD begins with a generous suite arranged by Fred Steiner for "Wuthering Heights," encompassing all the major motifs of Newman's score -- Despair - Twin Motives; Cathy's Theme; Wuthering Heights Motive - The Moors; The Children (Wuthering Heights the early days); The Playcastle; Cathy the Fine Young Lady; Isabella; and Edgar Linton - The Grange. Steiner missed nothing in this arrangement -- it is replete with Newman's trademark sounds, all beautifully performed, including ethereal strings evoking the moors and some hauntingly wonderful instrumental solos. (That haunting, almost eerie string effect made equally impressive appearances in such scores as "Song of Bernadette" and "Twelve O'Clock High"). There are passages within this suite that achieve a purity of sound I've rarely heard. As the Cathy theme is restated in the closing moments, a youth choir is used to near-stunning effect. The suite fully realizes the poignancy and staggering intensity of Newman's score and sound. The New Zealand Symphony is a magnificent body of musicians and it is expertly conducted throughout this disc's program.

The wonderful opening selection is a listening experience that, for Newman lovers, should be nearly cathartic. Because of this, it's probably best to take a breather before continuing on to the magnificent presentation of "Prince of Foxes.". This suite was edited by Tony Thomas and Kaufman leads his orchestra from the explosive opening of percussion of the Prelude through the major motifs of Newman's score for this renaissance film. Borgia's Triumphal March will be more familiar to many as the 'Rescue of Demetrius' from "The Robe" (and it was originally
written for "Hunchback of Notre Dame"), but as is true of all Newman's cross-referenced works, the piece takes on new life with gorgeously different and striking orchestrations. The sequence beginning with Theme Development and continuing through to the end is a stunning orchestral conversation, starting in the flutes, then taken up by cello and violin, interrupted by fanfare, then taken back over by the string section which engages in a wonderful counterpoint exercise. The suite ends majestically with an organ leading into a restatement of the main theme and concluding with full orchestra fortissimo.

The shortest selection in this program is a mesmerizing reading of Newman's love theme from "David and Bathsheba." There are more than 3 minutes of Newman's music here and each second is a gem. It begins with the strings shimmering through the sensual seductive phrases of both the film's main title and Bathsheba's bath scene and segues into a gorgeous reading of the love motif (known in some quarters as 'Rapture of Love') in which the NZO is so beautifully in control that it seems to caress the notes as it weaves a spell. It is contemplative, soulful and searingly heartfelt.

The "Dragonwyck" suite, edited by Tony Thomas, begins with Main Title and Opening, in which the orchestra explodes into a foreboding, gothic maelstrom of sound and then segues into a jaunty, lilting tune. The Dragonwyck theme follows and has a plaintive, yearning quality that evolves into a beautiful light waltz (The Wells Family). The music turns sinister in Miranda, with high strings in a mysterioso passage. Dr. Turner closes the suite (and possibly the film?) with a somber, plaintive restatement of the Dragonwyck theme in the strings and then a full orchestral conclusion.

"The Prisoner of Zenda" is one of the best movies ever made and Newman's score to this film is one of the finest ever written. Arranged by Christopher Palmer -- and titled "A Ruritanian Rhapsody for Orchestra" -- Kaufman and the NZO give this music a robust, rapturous reading, complete with fanfares and ariations -- from tender to majestic -- of the regal main theme which serves double duty as a theme of dynastic tradition and as a love theme. There is also swashbuckling bravado representing the rescue of the Prince, the sword fight and the escape of Rupert of Hentzau. This score, in fact, served notice that Alfred Newman not only greatly admired Erich Wolfang Korngold, but could hold his own writing in the Korngoldian style. "Zenda" is a Newman score that deserves to be recorded in its entirety, but this suite beautifully captures many of its highlights. I wanted much more, but this will do.

The final selection is the rousing "Brigham Young: A Symphonic March,." adapted and arranged by Fred Steiner "from The March, 'The Trek,' and the hymn tune by William W. Phelps 'the Spirit of Gold like a fire is burning.'" (from the booklet notes). There is a wonderful "pioneer" flavor to this robust march, and it is a rhythmic crowd-pleaser.

      5 out of 5 stars Brecht sings!.......2003-02-02

Come on! A chance to hear Bertolt Brecht sing his own Mack the Knife before Bobby Darrin messed it up! How many CDs are going to have that?!

3 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad, all Weill........2003-01-02

Kurt Weill and Broadway fans will probably feel an intense need to have this album, and I'm not sure I'd be able to dissuade them. There's some good stuff on this recording, to be sure, but a great deal of it is in German, and much of it might not interest even someone with just a casual interest in the material chronicled. While there's a strong representation of The Threepenny Opera (all in German), the selections from Lady in the Dark featuring Gertrude Lawrence and Danny Kaye are vital, as are the tracks of Mary Martin and Kenny Baker performing selected numbers from One Touch of Venus. (You can also hear Walter Huston performing a song from Knickerbocker Holiday, though it is, for some strange reason, "The Scars." It's an interesting historical record, but not a great song.) Lotte Lenya also sings some as well, which is a treat, but overall, this is a highly variable recording. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting beforehand, or you may be likely to find yourself--as I do--listening to only half the album.

I bought this CD after stumbling on Mira's website. It's an awesome find--a mix of sounds and vibes. Mira is a great singer which seems to rare these days of overmixed, overproduced music. I highly recommend giving this one a chance and I would guess we'll be seeing Mira more and more!

      5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-05-16

I received "Can't Wait" by Mira Tabasinske a few days ago and have been listening to it over and over since then. It is absolutely great. It's the kind of CD you put on when you want to sip a few cocktails on a hot summer afternoon on the porch and let it all put you "in the mood". Beautiful vocals and intriguing lyrics, combined with high quality musicianship and production. Love it.

This is my roadtrip music, my clean my house from top to bottom music, my soak in the bathtub music, my glass of wine after work music. From Mira's lilting vocals to the lush production I am LOVING this CD.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-04-12

I don't usually write online reviews, but I have to say this record ROCKS. Exquisite vocals and great rhythm, and very soulful. It really moves you. Mira's style has a realness to it that is very unique. She is a true star. I'm addicted to this album!! Thank you Mira!

        5 out of 5 stars Essential 70s Disco.......2006-01-19

If you're into Disco Music (especially that of the 70s)then this CD is a must in your collection. Crown Heights Affair produced top dance music and this CD is packed with all of their most essential recordings. One of my favourites is "Dancin'" which has an intro very similar to Issac Hayes' "Shaft". Also "Say A Prayer For Two" and "Far Out" are favourites of mine.
