The irresistible combination of smoky bossa nova textures and velvety electronic beats has already been successfully mined by Brazilian divas such as Bebel Gilberto and Cibelle. But in the hands of Italian DJ Nicola Conte, the electro-bossa recipe continues to surprise with its wide-eyed innocence, lounge undertones and instantly hummable melodies. Conte has an ear for the melancholy feeling of pop culture nostalgia associated with the 1960s-- the Antonio Carlos Jobim records, the Michel Legrand soundtracks, the Stan Getz sessions. De Souza's sweet vocals and tender delivery are ideal for the task of resurrecting venerable samba nuggets such as Baden Powell's and Vinicius de Moraes' exuberant "Canto De Ossanha" and Caetano Veloso's wistful "Saudosismo." Equally intriguing are the handful of original tunes by Conte and De Souza--a seamless recreation of the summery vibe and enviable lightness of touch that lies at the essence of the bossa aesthetic. --Ernesto Lechner

5 out of 5 stars Nicola Conte Apresenta..........2007-05-19

I first heard Rosalia de Souza on one of the Erotic Lounge compilations, so I decided to buy both this cd and "Brasil Precisa Balançar", her second release. I really enjoyed every track on this cd, the combination of Rosalia's voice with Nicola's production really makes for an impressive release. This truely is a great cd, buy it , you wont regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!! I love you Rosalia!.......2006-02-03

I never know what kind of reaction I'll have when listening to an album. Most of the time, I expect that the album will suck. (Yes, I am that pessimistic.) Anyway, around the time I picked up Rosalia's album, I had just finished Nicola Conte's "Bossa Per Due" at the time. I was disappointed with that album, so I wasn't really sure that I would dig Rosalia's album when I learned that Conte was behind the project.

I was wrong. This album is fantastic. Rosalia's voice is sweet, charming, quirky, and lady-like. "Maira Moita," is one of my favorite songs off the album. Rosalia's a wonderful performer. And, I have to give kudos to Nicola Conte for the stellar arrangements on this album. He also brought new life to the Powell classic "Canto De Ossanha" and Veloso's "Saudosismo."

On a side note - I've heard three versions of "Canto De Ossanha" performed recently by three modern albums - Daude (who does a great catchy reinterpretation r&b/pop version of the song) and Paula Morelenbaum (whose album I adore - but fails at her interpretation because it sounds cartoonish) and Rosalia's whose version is closest to original version. Her interpretation is classic, beautiful, and wonderful.

I adore Rosalia, who is definitely among the top of the modern day Brazilian divas! I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Get this CD!.......2005-09-29

My fantasy- Nigella is cooking me lunch, I'm opening the Pinot Grigio and Rosalia de Souza, Garota Moderna is playing in the background and we're barefoot.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling - Brazilian Style.......2005-09-07

This is such a great album for relaxing, or having dinner w/ friends. I also recommend Bebel Gilberto, Tanto Tempo. These two albums make a great pair.

5 out of 5 stars flawless.......2004-10-29

What we have here is pretty simple: Men with beards. Blistering blues-rock riffs. Songs that refuse to die. On its fourth album, Comets on Fire takes the very foundation of rock 'n' roll (well, from the good years on) reheats it and serves it back up in gargantuan portions. We're talking the eight-minute solo-heavy opening track, which roughly approximates what it would have sounded like if the Stooges ever jumped on stage with the Grateful Dead. Produced just as well, too. Yes, this Santa Cruz quintet that shares member Ben Chasny with Six Organs of Admittance might occasionally qualify for jam-band status, but give them some credit. Phish could never come up with songs as euphorically ugly as "Lucifer's Memory" and "Hatched Upon the Age." --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

The follow-up to "Blue Cathedral" is an earthy, more accessible, and downright beautiful album. "Avatar" veers from swinging, bluesy explorations to piano-laced, progressive power balladry to pure tribalism, evoking everyone from the Allmans to Quicksilver to Procol Harem to some insane Fela/Sun Ra/Crazy Horse hybrid, yet remains wholly Comets On Fire. Though they play cleaner and clearer, their firepower is evident and abundant.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best So Far.......2007-03-07

Not to take away from any of their previously tremendous albums, but I have no idea how you could be a fan of guitar based rock music and not see this album as one of the best things that's come out in ten years. Complete and total five star material, without even thinking, if you don't have this album, buy it, NOW.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars. mind-blowing rock freakout........2007-03-06

i didn't know that stuff like this was still being made. this is a disc of acid rock freakout glory that puts one in mind of hawkwind, only comets on fire are even better at this stuff than hawkwind. if you are a lover of hard rock mayhem, don't miss this. an outstanding recording!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-01-05

Very good ! A band that progress on each cd album. Imaginative, rock, psychedelic, sometimes hard, sometimes smooth. Many influences and finally a wonderful authentic sound. "Comets on Fire" please continue on that way.

4 out of 5 stars gorgeous, floaty, and heavy.......2006-12-22

if you review a record by complaining that it sounds like yes, don't write the review. WE KNOW that yes is prog, and a lot of people like it, so you're wasting your time. it's a difference in ideology.
that said, this album doesn't sound a bit like yes, it's heavier than it is proggy, dancier than it is jammy, and bluesier than it is pop.
and the singer CAN sing. what's wrong with his singing? it's not as histrionic as jon anderson's, or even greg lake. it's more akin to procal harum, but not as schticky.
this album rides the fence between ambition and masturbation perfectly, recognizing the benefit of both and distributing them evenly.
from the first notes of 'dogwood rust', the peaks and valleys come and go before you could ever get bored, and each song is played masterfully, but the production isn't pristine; instead it leaves all the cracks and leaks, something that goes against the progrock grain, yielding something undoubtedly human. great record.

1 out of 5 stars Avatar! Goblins, Hobbits & mush.......2006-12-12

Whatever was truly awful about Yes, prog rock, this might be worse. Wanking guitars, no melodies, and I'm afraid someone told Miller he could sing. If you desire a wall of sound, try Loop, or Th' Faith Healers. You might even go with the MC5, which is what Comets are shooting for.

4 out of 5 stars Planet Asia= DOPE MC.......2005-10-01

This is Planet Asia's second album and if it werent for a couple poor atemtps at comercialism early on in the album this would be a bonafide classic I loved 95% of the tracks on this disc and found asia to be a pretty formidable lyricist I enjoyed his laid back street knowledge type flows that work really well with this type of west coast style on this CD. If you are a fan of Wild Child or The Alkaholiks you gotta check this guy out. while not a classic this is one of the west coast undergrounds finest.

5 out of 5 stars this kat is part of the underground movement .......2004-10-03

well i will not say this album is a disappointment i really like planet asia infact i see him on some days and yes i have talk to him .he is a dope azz emcee and he from cali hardly theres no dope emcees from cali.i would say emcee that i think are dope is planet asia, murs(living legends),abstract rude, grouch, nocando, and subtitle them kats is dope to me i dont know about yahh but im waiting on that planet asia king medallion mixtape..and for whoever think p.a is not tight what type of music you listen to?thank you

4 out of 5 stars Solid CD.......2004-08-27

Planet Asia is a very talented MC hailing from the Freson area of California although is flow is more east coast, almost Wu-Tang on certain cuts (Track #6)All in all, it is a very solid CD. A good 6 or 7 songs you will really enjoy. His underground roots show through as amateurish on some tracks such as Paper Up which just doesn't come off as polished at all. The top songs are all bangers though:
Right or Wrong: Excellent beat and smooth flow by PA
Real Niggaz: Asia holds his own with Ghostface, great song
Pure Coke: Wutang type flow over a Cali-type beat, blends well
Upside Down: Showcases his storytelling ability, solidifies his talent as a well rounded MC,not something every underground MC can pull off
Summertime in the City: Seems like Asia almost had a hard time finding his flow but I just love it as a kick back joint.

I lost this CD twice and bought it back both times, so it is good enough to get, trust me you will find songs you will love.

4 out of 5 stars THE KID IS NICE!!!.......2004-08-20

CALI HAS SOME HOT MC'S, BUT THIS KID IS ONE OF THE BETTR ONES I'VE HEARD. SOUNDS LIKE A COMBO OF BLACK THOUGHT AND OC. THE ALBUM HAS A STRONG EAST COAST INFLUENCE AND THE ONLY THING THAT KEEPS THIS ALBUM FROM BEING 5STARS IS MORE BIG NAME PROCUCERS. STILL A MUST BUY FOR ANY TRUE HIP-HOP FAN.

2 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2004-05-20

first off i think asia is one of if not the phatest mc's from CA. still in training was hot but this one i really wasnt feelin. i listened to it a couple times and the wackness still shined thru. no disrespects to asia i still think hes hot but grand opening isnt good at all.

5 out of 5 stars Shoji Meguro Satisfies Once Again.......2006-02-07

Shoji Meguro, key composer of the game Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne returns to create another outstanding soundtrack for the Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga storyline. The atmospheric tracks on this soundtrack set range from light piano to invigorating rock music composed for the battle themes.

If I'm not mistaken, this would be the Digital Devil Saga Integral Soundtrack. This set combines every song from both DDS titles. It's complete, unlike the bonus CDs that came with the games, in which case were missing many songs from the event scenes and other bits.

If you loved Meguro's work on Nocturne, you'll without a doubt love this beautiful set he has compiled.

3 out of 5 stars Average Soundtrack - Diverse.......2004-11-17

This album succeeded in getting rappers from everywhere on here (East, west, south, midwest) but most of the tracks are just average. It has a lot of big names on here but most of the songs they put on the soundtrack are probably throw aways and it shows. It starts off very strong but halfway through most of the tracks that follow aren't really any good and not worth listening to (A few after number 7 are good but not many). There are some skippable tracks but there are also some real good songs. I'm up in the air for a recommendation, if you like all kinds of rap then this is for you, if you really are only a fan of one kind of rap, then I wouldn't get this.

#2 - 9 (Kurupt & Nate Dogg)
#3 - 8.5 (RZA, Method Man, Street Life, Raekwon)
#4 - 7.5 (Snoop Dogg)
#5 - 8 (Pharaohe Monch)
#6 - 8 (slower song by Krayzie Bone f/ Lareece)
#7 - 6.5 (Master P, Slay Sean, Short Circuit, Krazy)
#8 - 4 (Devin the Dude - one of my least favorite of his songs ever)

if you are a fan of the hbo series 'oz' or if you just like rap then this soundtack is for you. the 'behind the walls' song by kurupt and nate is off tha hook!!!! that is definately the song on the album. my other favourite tracks are drag on's bangin joint 'tonight', 'what is the law', nother tight song by pharoah monch, 'shackled up' by krayzie Bone, 'incarcerated' by majic, blaxuede & fiend, snoop's 'land of oz', and the wu-tang's head-banger, 'what you in fo''. even cypress hill have a tight track with 'can i live'. buy this soundtrack now, it's worth every penny. in my opinion almost everyone on this outdo themselves (...) if you want different artists over funky beats this is for you. 'welcome to the land of oz'!!!

5 out of 5 stars this soundtrack is bangin!.......2001-07-21

this is the best soundtrack i heard in a while people! kurupt's track is bangin with nate in the background giving him some love. wu-tang's track is tite with rza coming with some follow up lyrics from his domestic violence track from bobby digital. snoop's and drag on's track on it is just funky, something you can bounce and rub up on a girl to, nah mean. pharoahe monch comes correct on the lyrics for his track "what is the law" and the beat gets your head noddin. krayzie bone's track is a mellow track something for you peeps to smoke to. kool g rap comes through with some thug rhymes on the oz theme joint. and cypress hill came through with a dope track. if you feelin the show and a hiphop fan you gotta check this album out. if you just a hiphop head and can't afford HBO or just have basic cable or no cable at all check it out for some bangin tracks by some of hiphop's best, nah mean. CA all DAY! peace!

Lead by Marty James (formerly of Scapegoat Wax), this three man group is often described as reminiscent of Black Eyed Peas - when they were GOOD!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A worthy successor to the Scapegoat Wax legacy.......2005-09-15

For now I imagine most of the buzz around this album is going to center around the fact that this group is made up of members of Scapegoat Wax. Those looking to this album as a followup to what was done with Scapegoat Wax will not be disappointed; it's essentially a rebranding of Scapegoat Wax with rapper Z-man thrown into the fray, and Marty James' musical vision has not changed greatly.

Marty James serves up an appealing mix of pop, rap, and r&b with hip-hop style production. Shades of Jurassic 5 and early Smash Mouth are present, but Marty makes sure to own his sound on every track. Some tracks are pure hip hop, others slower melodic confections centered around Marty's crooning, and most of them shift deftly between the two. Z-man's nimble raps complement the sound nicely.

Long Story Short is a pretty full album with 16 tracks, and some good variety. It's adventurous enough to try alot of different things, and while some work better than others, the whole is better for the experimentation. While I don't think I could say that OBR expands the sound pioneered by Scapegoat Wax in any big ways (although the balance may skew a bit more toward hip-hop thanks to Z-Man's presence), it was diverse enough and fresh enough that it still holds up these 4-5 years later.

Stand out tracks include energetic electronic hip-hop numbers "Look Out Below" and "Champion", the catchy pop number "Black Mercedes", and the album's first single "Loud and Clear", but the real standout track for me has been "Wake Up Tomorrow", which is just very well put together and encompasses so much of the One Block Radius sound in one tight package. This song is worth the price of admission alone.

One Block Radius have proven that they have what it takes at this point, and I hope that they're able to connect with their audience. It's not a CD that will appeal to everyone. It's built on a hip-hop backbone, but it's not likely to appeal to hip-hop purists, nor those that are turned off by the genre. But those looking for something fun and adventurous that dances around genre boundries would do well to at least give this a listen. And for those who were already a fan of Scapegoat Wax, this one's a no brainer.

5 out of 5 stars Whether You're "Up in the Hills" or "Missin Sumthin"...An Album Everyone Can Enjoy.......2005-09-02

The multi-talented group One Block Radius has created a formula that anyone with a neck can bob their head to. From start to finish, this is truly a polished work, it is difficult to find flaws in any of the songs. A classic debut from Z-Man, Marty James, and MDA.

4 out of 5 stars Scapegoat wax is dead - but Marty James is back!.......2005-08-30

Band leader Marty James started a band called Scapegoat Wax a couple of years ago. They had a hit single "Aisle-10", but that was it. Things didnt went to well with there record company, and marty decided to stop and work on something else. And then finally after a few years he is back! His new "band" One block radius is here with there debut album "Long Story short". However, Martys voice directly reminds of his indie group Scapegoat wax. If you like Scapegoat Wax - you will like this for sure. If you like this for sure - you will probably like Scapegoat Wax.

If you have no clue what the hell "Scapegoat Wax" is, and just want to know what kind of music this is: This is brilliant hip hop that actually more sounds like "Pop with a beat". It sounds fresh and more exiting then a lot of uninspired hip-hop/pop cds these days! Its no-nonsense and light that just gets you in the right mood for whatever! Make sure that you discover Marty James great voice and Rap-skills, and same props go for the crew! Chek this album out!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......2005-08-29

One Block Radius comes up big with a debut album that is solid from start to finish. Their sound here is both unique and infectious, delivering an assortment of original beats and clever lyrics that range from heartfelt to humorous. EVERY TRACK IS GOOD! From upbeat tracks like Loud & Clear and Wake Up Tomorrow to mellow tracks like Alone and Smokescreen, the entire album is reflective of real life experiences and sentiments of this generation. This is the best album released so far in 2005 and the kind of album that will easily gain momentum as word of it spreads. A remarkable artistic achievement and a soon to be classic. GET THIS ALBUM!

I couldn't think of a better way to start the new year...getting my hands on this CD! I've been waiting for this album since I first heard "The Process" grace my ears from the speakers of my friend's car. It's like a breath of fresh air in comparison to alot of the music that has come out lately.

Dope beats, dope lyrics...good music, great content...what more could you ask for. I've been to a few of their shows and they never disappoint. Definitely worth the buy!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2002-05-12

This is hands down one of the best trumpet recital CD's out there. Mr. Mase's playing is outstanding. He has a beautiful sound and amazing articulation. What really makes this CD outstanding his Mr. Mase's overriding musicianship. I especially liked the opening piece "The Avatar" the first mvt. Features Mr. Mase on piccolo trumpet, and the second and third continue on with flugel horn and trumpet, respectively. The piece is very interesting with lots of contrast and melody. I especially like the first two mvts.
The Kent Kennan sonata recorded here is in my mine the definitive recording of this work (at the very least the definitive revised version).
This is a must buy for any trumpet student. For any person interested in modern brass music this is a definite recommendation.

Product Description

The classic soundtrack to the cult smash hit movie Fear of a Black Hat which has been described as a "Rap Spinal Tap". Finally re-released!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious AND Brilliant.......2003-05-01

What makes this CD so great is despite rap being one of my least favorite musical genres, these are really good tunes! They're lyrically hysterical AND they rock!

It's a short list of films that can bear repetition. This one does. My copy has survived heavy usage for almost 10(!) years, but the soundtrack has the full versions of the songs.

See it, buy it, love it!

5 out of 5 stars Fear of A Good Review.......2002-06-07

I thought I was the only one that got this movie and it's songs. The tracks are very reminicent of the early stages of hip-hop but it's meant to be that way. The lyrics are hilarious and even more so if you have experienced the movie. Once you have seen the movie, this soundtrack is a must. However, the soundtrack is strong enough to stand on it's own even without "A Gangter's Life Ain't fun." You will enjoy it, especially if you grew up listening to hip-hop.

5 out of 5 stars Wear Your Hats!.......2002-05-15

Wear Your Hats! The movie is great(like Spinal Tap and CB4), but the soundtrack is unreal! You will sing along & laugh to every track, see the movie first to get the full effect. You will become a N.W.H. fan for life!

4 out of 5 stars brilliant!.......2001-02-17

This is as funny a CD as I've ever heard. Rusty Cundieff's songs are incredibly deft (not def, although they're that, too) in their mixing of parody, verbal dexterity and even some internal rhymes that put the average busta to shame. The movie, of course, is brilliant as well.

A personal favorite, from "Come Pet ...": "It's our job to educate, infiltrate or shred 'em/So c'mon, let's spread 'em ..."

The only thing that keeps it from five stars is the idiotic "White Cops On Dope," which isn't in the movie and shouldn't have been on the CD. And why isn't "A Gangsta's Life Ain't Easy" (the song that's playing while Ice Cold is maxin' and relaxin' in the hot tub wit' his ...) on here?

5 out of 5 stars Now see me..........2001-02-08

Whether you sport a fedora, a babushka or some Horton hears a Who type lid, this CD has something for you: phat beats (My Peanuts), dope rhymes (Grab Yo Stuff), smooth lyrical prowress (White Cops on Dope) and social consciousness (Come and Pet the P.U.S.S.Y.). Just look at some other song titles: Wear Yo Hat (Buried and Bald), F@#$ the Security Guards, Booty Juice. The words speak to me on a very intimite level. This CD changed my life.

I agree with Eddie about the necessity of seeing this movie. It should be required viewing for anyone who owns a rap album. In fact, they should make a sequal to this landmark film. With people like Puffy, Eminem and Will Smith dominating the charts, there are countless possibilities for lampooning.

Buy the CD. Listen to the CD. Love the CD.
