When a hip-hop album opens with a collaboration with modern-day prog-rockers the Mars Volta, you know to expect the unexpected. That's pretty much what Brooklyn's El-P (born Jaime Meline) has been delivering since day one, first as a member of now-defunct indie-rap heroes Company Flow and later as founder of the maverick New York label Definitive Jux. Trent Reznor and Cat Power also show up on his first new release in five years, but El-P remains the one to watch, rattling off his typically complex rhymes about the state of the world (and the bedroom) over the cling-clang of industrial beats and frenzied noise. It's dense and weird and sometimes even scary, all of which makes it a marked improvement over the usual Saturday night boom-bap. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:
Only a provisional four - could well become five.......2007-07-09
So far I love it: the extended, prog-rock beats and electronics/noises of all descriptions. My favourites are probably the first track, last and many of the others in between. It's a lot easier to say which tracks I don't find 100% great. Flyentology has a slightly monotonous and boring beat which doesn't quite seem as dark or deep as some of his other tracks but it's still pretty good.
I bought this quite soon after getting Fantastic Damage and am currently in a sort of EL-P mode which could mean I'm a little biased but this is definitely worth a listen.

I'll Sleep When You're Dead.......2007-06-07
And pulverize it does. I'll Sleep When You're Dead feels absolutely ferocious; it's the roaring, heavy metal counterpart to Funcrusher Plus's skeletal hardcore punk, and it takes no prisoners from its galvanizing start to its death knell of an ending. Songs are packed to the gills with weird, ungodly noises, melodies appear and disappear like holographs, and dense yet nuanced rhymes roll atop percussion that could have been created by actual weaponry. Indeed, there's so much violence on this record that it should be traumatic to drink in, but El-P's skill and insight on the mic, his studio perfectionism and his flair for idiosyncratic drum programming keep the proceedings as gripping as a 13-car pileup.
Deeper listening reveals that Sleep thrives on a couple of paradoxes. First, the album maintains its focus and cohesion even as it spins off in many different directions. The doomy atmosphere of "Tasmanian Pain Coaster" doesn't sound much like the Brooklynese bounce of "EMG" or the almost operatic "Poisenville Kids No Wins," but even with the diversity (which is inevitable, what with the hundreds of sounds being employed), it's clear that there is a particular aural agenda at work. I'll Sleep When You're Dead sounds uncannily like a comic book, which isn't to knock it; after all, comic books these days attain a level of darkness and extremity that filmmakers are often too risk-averse to attempt. Imagine swarms of robotic flying insects in the Invader Zim cartoon from your worst nightmare raining down machine gun fire and you're getting close.
The second paradox has to do with El-P's lyrics, which attend to personal and universal problems as though they're both part of the same sick plan for humanity that was doomed from the very beginning. While Clipse's Malice and Pusha T believe that a worldly issue (coke dealing) affected their personal states (thickly obfuscated misery), El-P flips the algorithm: He views every act of savagery--from speeding cars to sexual abuse--as indicative of the world's endemic evil. Though it's clear that he doesn't want any part of it, he admits has no choice. He calls himself the "son of urban confusion hatched in a pit where brutes live" and "half a robotic monkey ugly born of a viral agent." Like Nas on his classic Illmatic, El-P simply speaks about what he sees and uses his observations as a form of social protest, reinforcing the idea that the most affecting hip-hop finds a middle ground between slouching back in the seat of a flashy convertible and trying to change the world. His raps have slowed down a bit from his previous work to become part of the rich milieu and to let us latch onto every grim metaphor he hurls our way, but don't worry; El-P's flow will still knock you out of your chair.
And the collaborations? They're all excellent, probably because El-P isn't concerned about flattering his guests, writing his songs his way and using Reznor, Marshall, Rodriguez-Lopez and Bixler-Zavala purely as filigree. The Mars Volta caps off the blitzkrieg "Tasmanian Pain Coaster" with an a funereal trudge, Marshall lends her emphatic torch singing to the chorus of "Poisenville Kids No Wins," and Reznor's sinister cackle seems form-fitted to the electronic torture chamber of "Flyentology." Though they do seem like unorthodox choices, especially compared to Def Jux labelmates Cage and Aesop Rock, all of these artists deal with depravity in their own music (albeit in different ways), and after a few listens, their additions on this album click oddly into place.
I'll Sleep When You're Dead is an utterly urgent recording, something that (unfortunately) feels appropriate for our perpetual state of emergency. Nas once famously spit, "I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death," to which El-P eventually paid tribute: "The timepiece must've read early morning at least, so I laid death's cousin, woken by the silence of the peace." The title of this record, then, seems like less of a threat and more of a helpless prayer to a deaf higher power. Something tells me that, deep down, El-P wishes that there wasn't any need for him to enter the rap world and do what he does. But as long as we live on Earth, this record is as good a warning as any to sleep with one eye open.

She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. The enhanced CD features include musical film excerpts, as well as a video conversation between Goldenthal and star Salma Hayek and text interviews with the composer and director Taymor. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.

This ambitious, 10-track CD by the Spanish vocalist/composer Alejandro Sanz translates into English as The Train of Moments. Sanz's Andalusian-aired, flamenco-flavored vocals are backed by co-producer Lulo Perez's evocative synth arrangements and urban beats--with the help of Mana drummer, Alex Gonzalez, and Ketama vocalist Antonio Carmona--and other hip collaborations. Sanz teams up with Shakira on the spare, Brazilianized track "Te lo Agradezco, Pero No" and mixes it up with the rap duo Calle 13 and guitarist Juanes on the hip-hop/reggaeton-friendly ode to female seduction "La Peleita." The martial and moody video single "A la Primera Persona" contrasts with the rock-ish "Se Molestan" and the jazz-tinged piano chords on "Donde Convergemos." Sanz has been a pan-Latino powerhouse for over 15 years, and this recording will no doubt solidify and expand his position in that pantheon. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Album Description
Album includes collaborations with Shakira, Juanes, Calle 13, and Alex Gonzalez. Production contributions by Thom Russo (Audioslave, Macy Gray, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, and Mana).Customer Reviews:

A Solid Band Finding Improvement By Learning From Their Mistakes!.......2007-06-21
Their sixth studio album entitled "Youth," which was released on November 16, 2004, is considered by many as their "big comeback album." The record is similar to "Blender" in its production, however, the sound showcases a healthy balance between their old and new sounds. Highlights of the album include the catchy and impressive "Perfect To Stay," the flawless "How Do You Love," and "Under Heaven's Skies" as well as a song displaying the band's signature sound, "Counting The Days." Below, please find the rating for each song individually:

3-1/2 stars -- Calm, cool and collected...sort of.......2006-08-10
Well, yes and no. For one thing, it's surprising that Ed Roland and the boys left Atlantic Records and jumped to an indie label for this album. But for the most part, things do sound fine. The melodies are as good as they've always been, but the lyrics...well, not to start an argument, but I was initially wondering why they titled the album Youth, and after listening to it, I came to the conclusion that it could be because some of the songs sound like a youth wrote them ("Feels Right (It Feels All Right)" and "Under Heaven's Skies" come readily to mind).
There are a few other songs that are lyrically challenged, but thankfully there are more songs that sound better, like "Satellite", "General Attitude" and especially "How Do You Love" (actually, the lyrics in the latter don't look like much on paper either, but it's all in the way Ed sings them). In short, Youth feels more like a safe album than a truly great album. There isn't a "Shine" or "December" to be found on here, but it's still above-average. If you're a hardcore Collective Soul fan, you'll either love it or hate it, so pick it up and make your own judgment.

Having watched him throw away the prime years of his career on smack and prison, Steve Earle fans were reassured by the singer's 1995 comeback, Train A Comin', where he reclaimed the past in exquisite acoustic arrangements. They were further encouraged by the 1996 followup, I Feel Alright, which staked out the present with rock & roll defiance. Their patient faith was rewarded with El Corazon, an album that no longer looks back at those lost years but looks forward to the rest of Earle's career. Combining the sheer beauty of Train A Comin' with the bristling energy of I Feel Alright, El Corazon plows new ground with Earle's most explicitly political song yet, his furthest leap into another character's voice, a hard-core bluegrass number with the Del McCoury Band, and a hard-core grunge rocker with the Supersuckers. Earle turns the Fairfield Four into the Jordanaires behind his Elvis vocal on "Telephone Road," and he imitates Townes Van Zandt's austere minimalism even as he sings an elegy to his late mentor on "Fort Worth Blues." All in all, these dozen tunes are the best songwriting Earle has produced since his 1986 breakthrough, Guitar Town, and he sings them with the take-it-or-leave-it authority of someone who has nothing left to prove. On the album's first and best song, "Christmas in Washington," he offers a mournful prayer to Woody Guthrie to come back and rescue us from an era of wishy-washy Democrats and ruthless Republicans; Earle sings it as if his prayer had been answered and the Okie troubadour's ghost had found a home in his belly. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:
Hearts On Fire.......2007-03-22
"El Corazon" is the CD that changed that for good. Having gotten the past out of his system on "Train a'Coming" and "I Feel Alright," "El Corazon" finds him at a peak of songwriting, rediscovering his voice and reclaiming country from the world of hat acts. He brings in the Fairfield Four to channel Elvis Presley on "Telephone Road." Emmylou Harris drops in for vocals on "Taneytown." There's some near bluegrass on "The Other Side Of Town." And to top it off, Earle revisits his days as a musical bad boy by bringing in SubPop artists The Supersuckers to grunge up "NYC."
Earle also regains his social voice here. On the songs "Christmas In Washington," "Taneytown" and "Ft Worth Blues," Earle begins the turn into politics that would boil over into controversy once "Jerusalem" and "The Revolution Starts Now" were ultimately released. "Ft Worth Blues" is an eulogy to Towns Van Zandt, and a beautiful closer to the CD. It is, however, on "Christmas In Washington" that Earle measures up to Van Zandt's best work, as well as Woody Guthrie, the song's obvious inspiration. Decrying a nation's capitol where the Democrats sat frozen with fear after the Impeachment hearings were tossed and the Republicans began to overtly plot their revenge, Earle asks why no-one else seems to notice...or for that matter, care. It is such a potent song that even Joan Baez has covered it.
Although some here on Amazon have claimed "Christmas In Washington" is a weak song to lead "El Corazon," I respectfully disagree. It sets the voice of the CD into a troubadour mode, with "Ft Worth Blues" paying the perfect tribute at the end. In between, the stylistic mix shows that Steve Earle had overcome his long odds and recovered his rightful place as a singer and songwriter among the long lost country outlaws. A reminder that the Nashville establishment gave up on authenticity decades ago, "El Corazon" is music with a real heart.

I really liked "FLORES DE ALQUILER" their previous album that made them known and gave them the international success that they they needed to continue with their career. "EL MUNDO SE EQUIVOCA" follows the same direction and has the same quality. The first single "TU PEOR ERROR" is a great song that had been a big success along Latin America, Spain and the U.S.
From my point of view the best songs are "TU PEOR ERROR", "AHORA QUE TE VAS", "PARA NO DECIRTE ADIOS", "NADA" and "COSA DE DOS". Check the album it is really very good.
