Simplemente Divina.......2004-06-15
Tonita- like Selena, has a beautiful, soulful, honeyed voice and can emote with gritty passion, digging from the depths of her soul to render each song with conviction- of course i realize there are differences between the two singers (for example, tonita's style is quieter and more subtle and she sticks much more to the traditional tejano/norteno genre whereas Selena sung in nearly every style under the sun :), but as far as la academia, Tonita, along with Nadia and Myriam are truly 3 talented divas and i would be proud to say i am a fan of all 3 chiquititas divinas! each has a different voice quality and emotionality with comes across in their singing, and i would love to see an album of them together! but as for this album, Las Cuentas Claras, the production is very smooth and Tonita delivers a soulful ballad on "Palabras Tristes", along with "Matame" and "Hasta Que Amanezca", the latter which i believe was also sung by Graciela Beltran! the duet was a fiery and sensual collaboration between Tonita and Victor Garcia, whose voices were a perfect match. "Bombon de Azucar" was very cute and shows the more animated side of this sultry tejana/mexicana diva. This is also an enhanced CD where you get to see a music video and a clip of Tonita discovering that she got chosen for la academia- the reaction is so honest and emotional, you can't help but be reminded by mexico's genuine underlying passion, which is also evidenced in the singing and personalities of Nadia and Myriam, whose albums you MUST buy, if you don't already own them...as far as celebrity potential, i believe very much in Tonita and think she could go very far, and i would love to hear her one day record a latin pop/cumbia/balada and/or mariachi album, as i feel she would do great justice to these styles of music, and also one last note- in her next album, i would like to see tonita play up her emotional side and really enunciate her words as i know she has a fierce grit, but at the same time really relates to the pain and struggles throughout life, thus possessing the depth and passion which would be required for a bolero- but either way, in whatever direction she goes, i am behind this girl!
