After years of writing hits for Elvis Crespo, Olga Tanon, India, and other Latin stars, Rodolfo Nava Barrera shines in the spotlight on his promising debut release, a showcase of soulful Latin pop with authentic sabor. The Puerto Rican singer-songwriter's throaty, rum-on-the-rocks vocals smoothly navigate a varied landscape of styles, from traditional island bomba and plena to romantic ballads, rock, and reggae. Nava swings effortlessly from the folkloric (the infectious La Vaquita) to the ethereal (the sitar-accented Agua Bendita). Nava could be accused of being too eclectic, but what he lacks in focus he makes up for in enthusiasm, which is obviously shared by the musicians accompanying him in the studio. A first-class lineup of talents (including Jerry Gonzalez on trumpet and percussionist Anthony Carrillo) stretches out, alternating hard-driving party rhythms with plaintive melodies. Like the pan-Latin hits of Carlos Vives and Mana's rootsy rock, Nava's contemporary arrangements have appeal for discriminating fans of both pop and Latin music. --Judy Cantor

"What if Marco Polo had owned tape recorder?" This intriguing concept is raised in the liner notes to this impressive two-CD set, which wanders along ancient Asian trade routes known as the Silk Road. The first disc, Masters & Traditions, deals with formal styles performed by and for sophisticated connoisseurs. Meanwhile, the music on Minstrels and Lovers is played by amateurs who are part of daily life and thus reach a wider audience. The imaginary caravan passes through Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Afghanistan, encountering nomads, mystics, and bards along the way. The instruments are scratchy, pungent, and/or serene, while the singers weave a potent spell out of a millennium's worth of slow-changing rural and urban vistas. In the opening essay, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the project's artistic director, pleads for intercultural communication and empathy. This compilation provides an exotic, brave, entertaining first step in that direction. --Christina Roden

Album Description

What if Marco Polo had owned a tape recorder? And what if his epic travels along the Silk Road had taken place not at the end of the 13th century, but at the beginning of the 21st? Far-fetched conjectures to be sure, but our compilation The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan offers a glimpse of the rich musical life that an intrepid and curious traveler like Marco Polo might find in the lands of the Silk Road today.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Be a Marco Polo of music.......2007-05-06

Its rather difficult to review this in the regular like it/don't like it way. This is the endemic music of the people along the silk road the runs across Asia. Some of it sounds very strange compared to Western music, like study for an Anthropology course, while some of it very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Northern Exposure.......2007-03-30

This anthology is an outstanding survey of the northern section of the so-called Silk Road, taking us from Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran, through Uzbekistan, southern Siberia, China, and finally to Japan, but not in order, as the CD set is organized instead by category of musical function and the localities seem random. Although there are significant gaps in the styles, and I particularly miss the sweet lyric songs of Kyrgyz women, the powerful mugham voice of Qasimov of Azerbaijan, and more examples of the kylkobyz fiddle of Kzakhstan, the set provides a fine introduction of the musics of inner Asia and particularly the instruments. A glossary of instruments is provided, but unfortunately their images are often lacking. All the examples are short by necessity, when many traditional pieces are far longer in duration. For the uninitiated, it will take repeated listening to distinguish the uniqueness of timbre and rhythm from one land to the other; but this similarity of sounds helps demonstrate the role of the trade routes in sharing instruments and styles, such that the Japanese biwa, the Chinese pipa, and the Arabic oud all are related. If you want to attain some feel for the musics of inner Asia, then certainly these disks will meet the requirement.

2 out of 5 stars Sparse Great Songs.......2007-03-29

Some of the pieces on the first cd are "take away" great.
The secound cd is ...
I enjoy "world culture" music and sound however, the secound cd in this double collection was a monotonous let down.

5 out of 5 stars The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.......2007-01-03

Thank you for this part of my research on Central Asia.

5 out of 5 stars Like an Exotic Journey.......2005-08-06

This is the ultimate World Music collection. It features authentic sounds from vastly diverse cultures, assembled in such a way that they don't clash, they flow along like a caravan journey. If you're looking for familiar tunes, this isn't for you. But if you'd like to expand your musical horizons, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Beautiful, Superb, Stupendous, Bravo.......2002-03-06

What can I say, Bocelli is just one beautiful song after another. Even though I already had most of these songs on other Bocelli CDs such s Romanza, this is still worth getting for the Bocelli fan because it has The Bonus Track of Vivo Per Lei With Judy Weiss (It also include Vivi Per Lei With Giorgia which is also on Romanza), and it has The Power of Love with Bocelli in English with a Beatiful rendition. Every song on this CD rules, Con Te Partiro, Per Amore, Macchine Da Guerra, E Chiove, Romanza, The Power Of Love, Vivo Per Lei (with Giorgia), La Tue Parole, Sempre Sempre, Voglio Restare Cosim and Vivo Per Lei Iwith Judy Weiss) What can I say I can't get enoght Bocelli.

3 out of 5 stars I heard so much about the success of this album, but..........2000-06-29

...all save one of these songs are already on another Andrea Bocelli CD, "Romanza." That's the one to get. `Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Iýve heard all about this..........2000-06-22

This album was the one from which majority of the songs on "Romanza" were taken. Since I already have "Romanza," neither this album nor its predecessor, "Il Mare Calmo Della Sera," is on my to-get list.

5 out of 5 stars A masterful collection of folk music !.......1999-09-11

Sima Bina, after 20 years of silence, has managed to get everyone's attention fixated at the music of Khorasan, a part of Iran that had not recieved much attention in the past. She brings to life a melodious tale of people of Khorasan and their music in a series of recordings that this latest album is an awsome sequel to all the previous works! Way to go Sima Bina! keep up the good work!

5 out of 5 stars It's Nava'i and it's beautiful.......1999-04-02

This is perhaps the best CD by Sima Bina, and also a great Iranian CD in general. There is something about the music and the songs that's just "from the heart to the heart."

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-08-02

I have to agree with the review below. The only music which can be considered "Islamic" is when people chant prayers from the Quran. This CD, like other Iranian Classical Music CDs, features no Quran chanting. Iranian Classical Singing, since the Sassanid times, consisted of singing poetry along with the music. This CD, like other Iranian Classical CDs, consists of singing poetry and the instruments mentioned below. I particularly love the way the Qanoun harmonizes with the Tombak (percussion) and the fact that, like other Iranian Classical Music, the ensemble is small.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2005-08-02

It is ridiculous to call Iranian Classical Music "Islamic music." Iranian Classical Music is an ongoing tradition from pre-Islamic, Sassanid Iran. When Arab-Islamics invaded Iran they threatened to ban Iranian music, but as you can see, they failed. To the contrary, Iranian music was played by Iranian musicians at the Arabic court. These Iranian musicians were forced to change their names to Arabic names. Because of the power of the Iranian Empire's, particularly the Achaemenid and Sassanid Dynasties, Iranian music dominated the Middle East. For this reason, we see that the music of countries such as Turkey, Syria, and Egypt all bare the names of some of the Iranian modes (in Persian, mode is called Dastgah) those modes which mostly date back to pre-Islamic Sassanid times. There are 12 modes in Iranian music which consist of about 200 melodies or movements altogether. Iranian instruments found their way into other countries. Instruments such as the Ud and ney are Iranian instruments. The Ud's real name is "barbat" and dates back to the pre-Achaemenid era. The "ney" in Persian means "reed" and is a flute made of reed. Barbat and ney are used in Arabic countries and Turkey. Kamanche, tombak, tar, setar, dap, gheichak, dayre, chang, are all Iranian instruments and their names have meaning in Persian language, but they don't mean anything in the languages of the countries to which they were later introduced. This CD features tombak, voice, qanun (a plucked dulcimer-harp which originated in Persia). This CD is very beautiful music and a nice work on one of the ancient Persian modes called "Nava."

    3 out of 5 stars Dastgah Nava.......2000-06-27

This CD has some really great Islamic or more so traditional Iranian chant/music. I recommend it if you are looking for that Islamic song style. No I am not Islamic. The Assyryian art cover is not related but it looks good and is what originally caught my eye.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Immeasurably moving.......2005-07-08

I was looking for something different in the music section at Borders, and I found it. I scanned the CD, and the first track, "Con Te Partiro," immediately captured me. That's the power of Andrea Bocelli's voice. Music is the one art form that has the ability to transcend barriers of language and location, and Romanza does it so entrancingly.

Romanza is a summer garden after the rain--lush, effusive, rich, and reflective. There are so many wonderful songs here: "Con Te Partiro," "Il Mare Calmo Della Sera," "Caruso," "Per Amore," and "Rapsodia" are perhaps my favorites. "Caruso" is staggering in the depths of its pain.

Distractions are however present, namely the duets with Gerardina Trovato and especially Giorgia on "Vivo Per Lei," a bloated and screaching number that grates. But, that's what programming is for. The rest of the CD more than makes up for these flaws.

      Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Rate based on the quality and product.......2003-04-21

Be aware of such reviews that are not based on the merits of the artist or product itself. This is a great CD because of Bocelli, which happens to be European. Their product is the original... whatever we take from them to put under American label is the imitation. They are artists who are from Europe and whose careers are in Europe. How do we get to put our Americal labels on their products and compete against the original artist with our prices? Anyways, I think PerAmore2001 got off track and so did I. Bocelli and his music is what we all love.

5 out of 5 stars The Gold Treatment!.......2001-04-05

Yes, it's the same CD we love, but given the Gold treatment for pure high quality resolution. Bringing out the crisp tone of this wonderful tenor's voice. If you love Bocelli, and love Romanza, give your old copy to a friend and spend the extra few dollars for something to cherish forever!

1 out of 5 stars Very funny, just the same as ANY OTHER version.......2001-03-06

This is an in-your-face imitation of the actual "Romanza" album. Don't buy this one unless you want the gold trimmings on it for double the price of the American version. The only thing changed about it was the gold made for Andrea's Australia visit last year. Just get the US version and save your money.

      5 out of 5 stars Too good!.......2001-01-29

Listening to this beautiful recording will make your life better.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Duet.......2002-04-12

These compositions are played with such skill and emotion by both Ms. Nordmann (harp) and Mr. Syrinx (panflute) I find myself repeatedly reaching for it to sit back and listen with delight. Some compositions are played in a relaxing manner, some have an upbeat dance feel and some have an almost exotic sound - Turkish Road in particular comes to mind (although this one is a harp solo by Ms. Nordmann).

I am admittedly a fan of both the harp and flutes and play a standard orchestra flute, native american flute and soprano/tenor recorders. However, I've never had the opportunity to play the panflute (aka panpipes). After hearing the duets on this cd I am definitely going to have to aquire a panflute. I would not be surprised if anyone else were inspired to do the same after listening to this cd.

        5 out of 5 stars Great.......2005-11-10

This CD is Great! His second CD is even better. I especially loved the Puerto Rican Bomba(Paraiso) that was played in that CD since I love Afro-Rican music. This is a great CD if you want to listen to something new and refreshing. Latin fused with Rock fused with Pop fused with Great! This guy deseves to be known for his work.

        5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2005-09-05

This is one of those CDs that I pull out now and then and think, "Man, this is great!" It doesn't get back to the shelf again for awhile. This is a gem that somehow got overlooked. Nava's singing is mellow and the arrangements always interesting. Great driving music.

        4 out of 5 stars Read this!.......2003-04-28

I first heard Rodolpho Barrera on a music magazine format called "College Music Journal" and really enjoyed the one song featured. It was "Amores Los Tres" and it really grabbed my attention. I ordered the album online, not being able to find it locally in Florida and absolutely loved it. Lots of fun, all the way from the ballads to the hot "Hey You" at the end. I thoroughly recomend it to all my friends, Latins or not!!

4 out of 5 stars Worth the ride........2002-04-26

5 out of 5 stars EL PRIMERO DE RODOLFO BARRERAS........2000-09-08
