Robert Townson célèbre ici le 500ème cd à être édité par Varèse Sarabande en créant une compilation receuillant les nombreux réengistrements que Varèse Sarabande sut faire au travers des dernières années. Regroupant du matériel de Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, John Williams, Alex North et plusieurs autres, In Session propose un parcours éclectique au travers des années de compositions de chacune des bandes sonores présentées au sein de la compilation. Le voyage commence à avec la musique rejetée de 2001 d'Alex North, pour faire un parcours passant par Rebecca, Citizen Kane (Félicitons ici le FABULEUSE voix de la soprano Janice Watson et la direction impécable de Joel McNeely), Viva Zapata!, Psycho, The Sand Pebbles, Patton, Jaws, Platoon (Autre musique rejetée du regreté Georges Delerue, pastiche du célèbre Adagio pour cordes de Samuel Barber), Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (Musique composée par Joel McNeely pour le livre se déroulant entre The Empire Stricke Back et The Return of the Jedi) pour finalement clore avec Tara's Bulba. A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

I found it used for $4.00 - what a deal!.......2005-03-04

I have been looking for this CD for one reason - Martin Briley's "The Salt in my Tears". The song reached #36 on Billboard's Top 40 back in 1983, but deserved to do much better. It was one of my favorite videos at the time on WTBS weekend video show, "Night Tracks". I certainly did not want to buy an entire Martin Briley CD just to get this one song, so when I found this CD in a used bin, I was thrilled. The other songs are equally great, but I already had most of them on other compilations or greatest hits collections. The other song on this CD that I did not have was Lou Gramm's equally good "Midnight Blue". If you can find this CD used, grab it. All original recordings by the orignal artists. Well worth the money spent. To me, it earned the 5 Star rating soley based on finding "The Salt in my Tears", which I had not heard for over 20 years.

Volume 1. Nice variety of early 80's rock........2003-12-23

NOTES: In the early 90's, Priority Records issued several budget priced, short compilations (with only 9 songs apiece) called "80's Greatest Rock Hits."

This particular series mostly featured the rock side of the decade, in a variety of styles and tempos. (There were also separate, similar comilations mainly covering New Wave type songs, and obscure pop hits). This was my favorite of the series, since every edition played like a good mix tape.

THE FOLLOWING IS MY REVIEW FOR VOLUME 1: PASSION & POWER.

This, maybe coincidentally, was the first of the series I got on tape when I was about 10. It's one of the most varied. Taking on mostly hits from the early 80s and leaning towards album rock.

1) "You Belong To the City," Glenn Frey -- This mid tempo, cooled down, mild rocker from Miami Vice is a great opener.

2) "There's Only One Way To Rock," Sammy Hagar -- A great addition to the album. A surging, party-on hard rocker that still fits in with the other songs and really makes it rock. Also my favorite Sammy song.

3) "Rosanna," Toto -- No 80's collection is complete without this keyboard laden yearning, semi love song with a rocking chorus and guitar solo.

4) "Keep On Loving You," REO Speedwagon -- The band's breakthrough pop power ballad that still has a steady beat. Things now slow down after the two previous uptempo tunes.

5) "Best of Times," Styx -- A sugary sweet ballad by Dennis DeYoung. It's a nice rock ballad, but I'd have preferred either "Babe" or "Don't Let it End" in its place.

6) "Everything She Wants," WHAM! -- After five straighr rock, or at least rock influenced tunes, we take a turn to total pop here. A New Wavey breakup tune. It's not great, but it's a nice addition, as I would've never sought this song out.

7) "Missing You," John Waite -- Though this has been sorely overplayed in various formats, it's still a great smooth, mid tempo pop/album rock hit. Don't let its recent abundance on soft rock radio fool you. It's not a wussy song.

8) "Living Inside Myself," Gino Vanelli -- Speaking of soft rock, the collection takes a turn here for that. You know what, though? This is a quality early 80's sweet pop ballad at its best. Also a pretty rare tune and a nice inclusion.

9) "Make Me Lose Control," Eric Carmen -- A throwback to the 60's in spirit, but still 80's in sound. A totally fun, reminiscent mid tempo pop/rock tune about cruising and listening to the radio.

There you have it. Nowadays, a collection like this is usually found in the bargain bin of KMarts, sometimes on casette. If you see this one and want a cheap, quick mix tape and/or one or two of the songs, I'd recommend it. I just wish these collections were a little longer. Even just 10 or 12 songs.

Ever buy a compilation CD just for one song?Here you get at least three!!!There is a little bit here for everybody,including the extremely rare "Salt in my Tears".Killer early eighties angst rock well before Alannis was even conceived.Well,almost. If you can find this one available get it because it won't stay in stock anywhere very long.

This is a good compilation, featuring decent diversity in labels. There are only a few remixes so, if you already have most of these songs on their respective albums, you won't be too thrilled with this. Nevertheless, it's a good mix of what most modern industrial has to offer.

I have this CD, and if you are a fan of Industrial at all, you MUST have this one... the Tainted Love remix kiks a$$... There isn't one bad track on the disc... go klik on the buy now thingie and get this one... You won't be disappointed... =)

A great album!.......2007-01-22

I heard these guys play the songs on this album as an opening act for Roger Waters' "In The Flesh" concert. They were just amazing. Right after the concert I went out and bought the album. For someone who's been listening to Pedro Castillo's voice in Spanish since his days in Aditus it's a bit odd listening to him sing in English but he pulls it off quite well.

This album shows the quality of work by these artists and is a must-have for people who also like Pink Floyd, YES, Journey and other greats of symphonic rock

Under Jerry Goldsmith's baton, Alex North's soundtrack for Carol Reed's 1965 film about the life and artistic conflicts of Michelangelo gets a second wind. North's epic sweep and his mixture of Renaissance musical forms, somber religious chords, plainsong melody, and march beats congeal into a symphonic grandeur faithful to the film's equally larger-than-life subject matter--inspiration's heavenly spark. Like the story, the creative energy needed to make this music has its own divine conflicts. North was already challenged by composing in the shadow of the great painter; Goldsmith, who in turn subordinates himself to reworking another composer's score, delivers a noble show of functional competence that, while less than inspiring, is nonetheless a faithful re-creation that should please connoisseurs of classic movie music. --Joseph Lanza

A Great Soundtrack not to be missed........2004-07-23

I really don't like scores that have been re-recorded by another composer because they just don't sound the same. The Agony and Ecstacy however is great. Jerry Goldsmith, who just passed away did a terrific job with this and made it sound really good. I recommend this CD to any soundtrack fan.

Acceptable Recording of Agony and the Ecstasy.......2002-03-02

I had the original soundtrack for The Agony and the Ecstasy on LP when it was first issued, and I loved the music very much. I had high hopes for Jerry Goldsmith's recording of the score, since I also regard him as among the best film composers. There is, however, something missing from the music: the fire and energy that Alex North, himself, brought to it. I am sorry to say that this recording did not come up to my expectations.

In particular, I found the orchestra balance is a bit off and sometimes the tempo seems slow. In "First Battle" the horns answer the calls of the trumpets and trombones weakly, as if they were moved off stage. I was accustomed to hearing a more full bloodied sound. Some of the tracks, notably "Blind" and "Painting", come off quite well.

Also, parts of the sound track were never recorded like the tavern scene where Michaelangelo comes to regard his initial work on the Sistine to be imperfect. Also, where is the overture? At barely over 40 minutes I think this disc could have given us more of the soundtrack and less empty space.

A Big Shame That A Masterpiece Like This Is Ignored.......2000-12-28

Alex North is probably the John Williams of his time besides Bernard Hermann. All of his works were great and his effort put into them was enormous. The Agony And The Ecstasy is one of his great scores besides that of Spartacus and Cleopatra and was nominated for best score. What sets it apart is the style. The style was based on the music of the movie's setting and the instruments used were very medieval and religious-sounding, obviously requiring Alex to do much research. The main title for the film sounds majestic and as beautiful as the painting on Sistine Chapel. The pope's theme is majestic and the music describing the chapel is epic and religious in quality. The battle scenes actually sound like what they would in their time, a unique treat to listen to. The only thing missing was the beautiful choral pieces in the film but they were done by someone else so I don't blame Varese. The liner notes were extremely helpful and the performance made me forget about the difference between the original and the rerecording. I very, very strongly recommend it. It is very unique, ambitious, and one of the best things I've ever heard since Star Wars A New Hope.

Album Description

The first Venezuelan symphonic rock group, TEMPANO has a very personal sound in which superb melodies, complex breaks and very well-written themes reinforce the originality. In this context, "Atabal-Yemal" is a real gem ! Instrumental for the most part (Sung in Spanish for the rest), this CD includes refined melodies evoking RETURN TO FOREVER or CAMEL, the unusual sounds and breaks of HAPPY THE MAN, complex writing ala KING CRIMSON and the creativity of TANTRA ; the whole is touched with a typically warm, South American color. The CD also includes three magnificent, previously unreleased pieces, re-recorded in 1998 by the 1979 lineup (Which recorded "Atabal-Yemal"). This rebirth was surprising but pleasurable, all the more so as it resulted in a new album, "Childhood's End - El Fin De La Infancia", at the end of the following year. This opus benefits from the presence of Peter PETSJIK, the cellist for the Hungarian group AFTER CRYING, and this isn't the only impressive thing about the album. The unparalleled freshness of this music, the brilliance of the arrangements and the perfect interpretation will no doubt make this a landmark album of the year 2000 !... And what to say, about "The Agony And The Ecstasy" (2002), apart that this is the best of TEMPANO filled with maturity ?!? This piece of art is magnified by splendid paintings from the Italian Renaissance, beautifully illustrating the lyrics (Now in English) printed in the booklet. Another must-have…

Even with the advent of the enigmatic Hugo Chavez, not everything coming out of Venezuela is bad. At least on this one occasion, some very interesting progressive rock music is emanating from the formerly friendly confines of Venezuela

There's a reason that Tempano's, Agony and the Ecstasy, has tended to garner solid five star reviews. It is a solid five star album.

I bought The Agony and the Ecstasy on a lark. I had never heard a note by Tempano but the reviews sounded good, so I put them on my wish list, where it must have sat for a good year or so. It finally made it from my wish list to my cart, when after the last Xmas I received a large gift certificate from my daughter. When placing my order, I ran out of items I wanted but I didn't want to leave a credit balance.

When I received The Agony and the Ecstasy I played it on my computer while I was doing some typing upon it. I didn't expect much, but it didn't take long before I was paying more attention to Tempano's music then my typing. Within an hour I had pulled up Tempano on Amazon and ordered their other two available releases.

What kind of music does Tempano play? Though, they are from Venezuela, there seems to be very little Latin influences. I noticed a little in only one song, Il Duomo and it is fabulous. The Agony and the Ecstasy contains fifteen highly varied songs running from 56 seconds to ten minutes. Overall the album is sixty-five plus minutes. There are some vocals but the album is more instrumental. The songs range from symphonic prog rock, to movie score sounding contemporary music, to something just short of jazz, while the tempos run the gamut from easy going to medium fast, yet everything they play is smooth ... smooth as Venezuelan Oil.

Fabulous Prog Rock.......2006-09-22

This is a brilliant album.

It is prog rock throughout, and mostly symphonic prog rock at that, but it is amazingly diverse and rich.

These guys have more musical ideas in each song (and there are 15 songs here) than most proggers have in an album, and than most neo-proggers have had in their whole career.

At one point they even use a BANJO! And yet it flows in seamlessly and adds a wonderful atmosphere.

It is mostly instrumental, but the vocals are moving and tasteful and add subtle emotional overtones.

This is great stuff. If you like symphonic prog, please get it.

Trailblazing and yet familiar as a dream.

Another pleasant surprise from these Venezuelan guys. True to what has been their standard fare, they manage to produce a unique, original style that defies comparisons: I cannot think of any other band that sounds like them. This time there are some sonic innovations: the slap-bass sound is something... well, uncommon in progressive rock; however I really like how it matches their music. There are also more acoustic guitar passages as well as some Latin percussion, giving it a very distinctive flavor. You can even find some hip-hop style drumming in the midst of "Just in a Second", a very funky sounding piece. I personally dig the incorporation of elements traditionally associated with more commercial forms to the language of prog. "Timeless Time" is just beautiful: a swaying acoustic guitar background accompanied by lush keyboards and topped off with Mr. Castillo's vocals. Keyboardist Della Noce does an excellent job through the album offering a wide variety of sounds both acoustic and electronic. Lots of references to Italian culture through the album: my late friend and fellow prog connoisseur Ludovico would have loved that. "Imaginary Sky" is another gem with soaring vocals and more acoustic guitar and piano. Overall, I enjoyed this album just as I have also enjoyed their previous releases; however, this is a different, unique animal!

If any influences come to mind, which there are (which band is free of them?) I would not name
them because it would not help to accurately describe their sound at all , it includes nice melodies,
great instrumentation, great vocals, great guitars, what a bass player ! & Keyboards!
The music is remarkable and very varied it blends many stiles into a unique and distinctive sound
that gives them an edge over other contemporary bands.

This band is rooted firmly in the present and is not interested in digging up old bones.

I hope the media would stop using the term Progressive so commonly, it is becoming synonymous
with Pink Floyd and Genesis wannabes , bands that lack originality and creativity , Tempano are
NOT part of the modern prog . movement in any form they are an animal of their own and are exceptional.

Just buy it .

One of the best releases of the year ........2002-10-28

This new CD from Tempano is one of the best releases of this year so far , the music is perfectly crafted , any music lover must enhance their CD collection by owning this major work.

The Music is sublime , perfectly played by gifted musiciens that are bringing out the best of their instruments , I urge to own this CD , it really is special , one day may become hard to find so buy it before it is too late .

I am impresed very much by the lyrics as well , this is not the norm , short and meaninfull , beautifully sung , the album is 85 % instrumental and the singing is remarcable.

I hope to hear more in the future from this band that has become a favorite of mine , congratulations to the band .
