An Important Piece of Tango History.......2006-08-16
This concert is a double treat for Piazzolla fans who also have followed the long career of Osvaldo Pugliese. Not only do these two masters share the same billing, they share the same stage, their respective ensembles joined together for what is a joyous and glorious event.
On disc one, the supergroup performs seven Piazzolla compositions, giving them a unusual touch, then conclude by melding together La Yumba and Adios Nonino, which are two of the most internationally known compositions of Pugliese and Piazzolla respectively. On disc two, the united ensembles perform sixteen selections from the repertoire of Pugliese bringing to them a special flavor as well. The sixteenth selection is a modernistic blending of La Yumba and Adios Nonino.
My favorites here are Hora Cero, Milonga del Angel, Luna, Los Mareados, A Evaristo Carriego, the waltz Desde el Alma, La Cancion de Buenos Aires, Chique, Milonga Para Gardel (which features vocal harmonies harking back to tango's golden age), and the nouveau tango interpretation of the classic La Yumba blended with Adios Nonino.
This Piazzolla/Pugliese collaboration is an important piece of tango history not only because it is the first time these two musical giants appeared together on stage, but because it is the last time Piazzolla was to perform publicly with his Sex-tet. This live performance is an essential addition to the CD library of all who aspire to build a great tango collection.
