Formed in 1939, Orquesta Aragon was partly responsible for the mambo craze in the U.S. They continued for several generations, and this CD captures the full force of the band under the leadership of violinist Rafael Lay Jr., the son of one of the founders. The ensemble is arranged in the classic charanga form with a rhythm section augmented by flutes and violins. A pulsating and pleasing mix of old favorites and new tunes, En Route includes the sizzling guaracha "Ahora Si Sabrseao," the infectious "Bailar Mi Cha Onda"--based on a West African rhythm--and the funky "Cha Cuba," which mixes rap and the cha-cha. Orquesta Aragon is enjoying a rebirth, and this delightful recording shows why their sound will never die. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Titled for its constant flow of instrumental groove, the contemporary duo's Native Language Music debut and first new release in five years puts a fresh spin on their past work to create a collection that's remarkably cinematic. 5 out of 5 stars FOUR 80 EAST EN ROUTE.......2007-07-03

THIS CD IS GREAT! I THOUGHT THEY STOPPED RECORDING AS A GROUP! I WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE THAT THEY HAD A NEW CD. EN ROUTE IS GREAT!! JUST LIKE THEIR OTHER CD'S, I LOVE IT!! IT IS SO SOOTHING & ENJOYABLE!! I NEVER HEARD OF FOUR 80 EAST UNTIL CD NOW SUGGEST THEM IF I LIKE DOWN TO THE BONE!IT IS NOT FAIR THAT THEY SHOULD NOT BE RECOGNIZED LIKE THEY SHOULD BE!!THE YOUNG GENERATION DOESN'T EVEN BEGIN TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE MISSING!!THEIR MUSIC IS BEAUTIFUL!! I LOVE IT!!DON'T FORGET DOWN TO THE BONE, THEY ARE WONDERFUL TOO!!

5 out of 5 stars If you're looking at it, you should buy it!.......2007-06-29

I always try to temper my desire to comment on music until I've let it marinate for a while, lest I let my enthusiasm for having a new disc in the drive override rational thought. In this case, I'm just going to let it rip!

Good stuff, start to finish. Favorites so far would be Noodle Soup and Been Too Long - both fun grooves. En Route is a musical image of it's title, reflective of a long and easy cruise behind the wheel. 51 Division is a powerfully fun romp. Smooth tunes on this collection also, like Closer and Easy Come, Easy Go. Waterline is a magnificent and dreamy tune, kind of like looking into the ripples on a pond.

Four 80 East continues to get better and better. Their creative use of sounds continues to be a trademark of their work. If you're familiar with their work, listening to this collection is both reassuring and surprising. You can tell it's them, but each tune is new and fresh.

Just got it in time for the 4th of July, but I can already tell that the wife and I will be spinning this one a lot. Perfect for an easy afternoon cookout or taking in a sunset.

5 out of 5 stars What The.... WOW, What A CD!.......2007-06-13

After previewing all the tracks while using my Rhapsody subscription, I could not believe that I hadn't heard of this electro-contemporary jazz group before. I love smooth jazz, but man this put a whole new twist on the genre! If you love synthesizers and high quality musicianship, this is THE CD for you. To put it all simply, I was and continue to be amazed by this group and in particular this CD! I would buy an additional copy for anyone who loves smooth jazz easily.

5 out of 5 stars Two Words: Out...Standing!.......2007-06-08

En Route is an outstanding CD. Like the other Four80East cd's it's been played a lot here. Though I liked it from the start, I thought it rated just four stars. But with repeated listening, you begin to appreciate just how good it is.

There are lots of interesting things going on in this album that you might not notice at first: It's intelligence, the unusual electronic flourishes, Rob DeBoer's stylish bass lines.... And mention must be made of Jon Stewart's saxophone. Many saxists force their leads--resulting in brassy, disarticulate solos. Stewart's sax is sweet and natural. His playing never sounds forced, and is wholly in sync with the cool F80E atmosphere.

En Route continues F80E's trademark melodic, interweaving instrumental parts that float on and over DeBoer's bass riffs. Where it might differ from their other albums is the way the individual tracks (quite different from one another, a la Round 3) all come together so well, forming an almost geometric whole. In that sense I believe it's their most mature effort yet. Maybe their best. And that's no small feat.

5 out of 5 stars Four80East EnRoute -- more than "Noodle Soup".......2007-05-30

Let me say I have all of 480E's albums -- "The Album", "Nocturnal" and "Round 3" -- all three of these CDs circulate regularly through my various players.

When I heard #4 - "En Route" - was coming out April 24, I had to have it. After several searches locally I turned to Amazon and within days it arrived in my mailbox.

Since then the CD has not left my Scion's CD player...

Let's admit it -- some albums have two, maybe three good pieces and the rest is filler. Not this album. Every tune is unique and the extra time the guys at 480E put into this album paid off. The entire album is cool-funky-smooth with a hint of trance and soothing deep bass. "Noodle Soup" is getting all of the air-time on smooth jazz stations, but there's so much more to this album.

"Double Down", "Been Too Long", "Closer", "Don't Look Back", "Waterline" and, my personal favorite, the title tune, "En Route". (Love that guitar riff that sneaks in and out, then, toward the end of the track, the riff is held, distorted and repeated until the tune ends...oooohh...love that.)

Love "En Route" -- a definite must-have if you're a fan-of-the-groove.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great........2002-05-22

I got this double cd, since a fellow reviewer of Hamelin's Kaleidoscope said he couldn't fully endorse that disc, since this cd would be so much better. Wrong again, sewer boy!

Thanks to Arthur Schnabel complete recordings of Sonatas, Concertos and Variation Works have become the mainstay of the recorded piano repertoire. Nowadays, it is hard to imagine that this has not always been the case. Yet, just have a look at the complete Rachmaninov recordings on RCA to see that even this giant mostly recorded little trifles, since the record buyers of his time prefered snacks over meals.

This generous and economic double cd contains a compilation of mostly romantic smaller scale works, that Rachmaninov's clientele would have enjoyed. Some are obscure, others e.g. Ljadov's snuff box and Taussig's Gypsy tunes are pretty well known.

Hough-a man from the splendid 1961 vintage, just like Hamelin and your's truly- is a highly accomplished pianist. His playing is good, yet not up to the Hamelin standards. The repertoire, however, started to bore the hell out of me after a while. I admit, that there are true exceptions like the Liebermann Gargoyles, but for me this set was simply too much of a good thing.

The interpretations vary from decent to good. I used to own an lp of the French virtuoso Setrak, that contained both the Ljadov and Taussig mentioned above and believe you me those interpretations dwarfed what we get here.

In conclusion, a generous compilation of smaller scale pianoworks. Good clean piano playing and more than adequate recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2001-01-12

I am a pianophile and longtime record collector, and this is one of the most awe-inspiring recordings I have ever heard. Stephen Hough's pianism - and I don't mean to be hyperbolic - simply exhausts all adjectives one might try to use to describe it. This is the kind of album to listen to not so much for the music (though these are charming and now-rarely heard pieces) but for the artistry of the performer. For stunning virtuosity, listen to the final measures of the Moszowski piece or to the MacDowell; for rich tone and melting legato listen to Hough's own transcriptions of the two Roger Quilter songs. Out of hundreds of CDs I have heard, this is one of my absolute favorites - and a steal at the price. Stephen Hough is the modern day Cortot, Gieseking, Rachmaninoff, and Joseph Levine, for he has it all - drama, precision, color, intellect, raw strength, and yes - delicacy. I rarely make recommendations like this, but you absolutely must hear this recording.

5 out of 5 stars overly rich nostalgic pieces and particles of the piano.......2001-01-06

This is music that seems to have lapsed into a forgotten time warp, like when you open that old wood truck in the attic to find odd bits and particles, objects, dolls and photographs that immediately transports you into another fantasia place. That's what this music does. Hough has selected for the most part fast filigreed, rapid cascades and ribbons of pieces. Each however has its own narrative, its own special tale to reveal, a special musical texture,an endearing melody. Needless to say most of the composers here are those you've never heard before, like Ignaz Friedman, whose "Music Box" is not what you think, yes it has that timbre of forever moving tickly tones, for a ballerina popping out of a ceramic box. But there is a large pallette of sophistication here as well with the unique timbre of the piano. Every piece does this admirably. The Hexentanz of MacDowell (arr.Liszt) is a helter-skelter piece never stopping, scaling the upper regions of the keyboard, and this would be an encore work. It keeps you on the edge of your upholstered chair.Leoplold Godowsky is not an unfamiliar name,he is a specialist in the art of the arragement trying to capture a timbre, and here in Camille Saint-Saens forever memorable "Swan"the final days of post-romantic Louis Napoleon the Third era is handled with just a few more ripples in the pond than before almost imperceptible.

When played in consecutive order all these works I found myself bored, this music inhabits such a rich timbral world that it's message overspends itself, overspills into the next work. A modernist voice of Lowell Lieberman is here, a postmodern specialist in this genre of the new tonality, or the past revisited. Proust taught us the rich chasms of remembering, and the process of reoccurence of time returning in differnt guises. Lieberman's "Gargoyles" has its own sardonic charm.,equally at home compliasant with his timbral brethren.

5 out of 5 stars Stephen Hough is a genius.......2003-09-01

Spectacular pianist. Stephen Hough takes technique to a new level. Crisp, clear notation with beautiful phrasing and unbelievable dexterity. At times, it seems as though these pieces were composed for four-hand piano. This the album which first captivated my ear for Hough.

5 out of 5 stars Just Some Info About This Recording.......1999-05-11

I think the reason this recording is out of stock is that the content is duplicated by the Stephen Hough's CD entitled "The Piano Album". Perhaps it was simply reissued under a different name.

2 out of 5 stars light little pieces, fun but not too serious.......1998-10-17

Hough is definitely good to listen to, and this album is a collection of light little pieces that he can have some fun with. There are quite a few short pieces that are hard to find in other "all time favorite" collections.

5 out of 5 stars Melodies to miraculously cure the moribund!!!.......2005-09-10

This 2000 3-CD set is a new edition of 2-CD set from 1990 titled "Opérette-Passion" from EMI France. By popular request, this adds to the already mirific collection a third CD containing some of the real glories of mid-XXth century French operettas: Maurice Chevalier, Tino Rossi, Fernandel, Alibert, Denise Duval, Luis Mariano, Georges Guétary, Bourvil, Mathé Altéry, Anny Cordy, Gise Mey and Armand Mestral. The selection is not exhaustive - that would be impossible* - but it does give any listener a major incentive to go ferretting for more of the same and the complete score of some of those genuine masterpieces of charm, humour and melody by Fancis Lopez or Maurice Yvain (among many others). For students of the French language and French opera, this collection is priceless as it gives a very good impression of what makes the French singing voice different from any other: something called "le phrasé", which unfortunately cannot be duplicated or improvised by international stars who simply dabble in French (except maybe the multi-talented Petula Clark). The recordings range from a restored antique of the 20's by Chevalier to full stereo scores from the 70's. The result is a package whose value will never be duplicated in discriminating choice, sound quality and sheer listening enjoyment. One very minor reservation : The dates of the recordings are not indicated as they were in the "Opérette-Passion" collection and the names of the lyricists are not given. The liner notes are composed of a 2-page essay which gives a general outlook of the evolution of French operetta (in French) but could have been a little longer, in my humble opinion. Details like this would have made the difference between a wonderful album for connoisseurs and a genuinely educational tool. * The operettas of Vincent Scotto are not represented. WARNING: These recordings are genuine treasures and are never available for long either individually of collectively, so buying this collection is an absolute no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars FROM OFFENBACH TO LOPEZ.......2002-08-16

Yesterday ,before going to sleep, you told your wife:I have nothing against FRENCH operettas, but what i want to hear is the songs ,not the dialogue that goes with the genre when you listen to complete works. Here in that collection, all the composers who created that particular form of light music are represented. It is so much more entertaining than traditional opera.Among the highlights are songs from OFFENBACH's works like LA BELLE HÉLENE and LA PÉRICHOLE;MESSENGER's VERONIQUE and MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE;the famous LA VEUVE JOYEUSE that was successfull around the world;CHRISTINÉ's PHI PHI created the day after armistice in 1918.One of the pleasant surprize for me was hearing songs from LES MOUSQUETAIRES AU COUVENT and one from LA FILLE DE MADAME ANGOT (JADIS,LES ROIS)and another from CIBOULETTE(NOUS AVONS FAIT UN BEAU VOYAGE).MADY MESPLÉ,one of the best singers of the genre is featured on seven songs, and she is always a joy to hear in any role of the repertoire.FRANCIS LOPEZ, who is remembered as the last important composer is well honoured with eight selections with singers like BOURVIL,GEORGES GUÉTARY and LUIS MARIANO.Don't try to resist THE MERRY WIDOW ,she'll get to you one way or another.

4 out of 5 stars Best and cheapest of Koechlin chamber music........2000-12-12

At less than half the price of most of the other Koechlin CDs available, this one is a bargain, but what is most remarkable is the variety of selections and instrumental combinations. The playing is uniformly good, as is production. Many of the pieces are not recorded elsewhere, and those that are, are often definitively performed. As owner of 16 recordings dedicated to the works of Koechlin, I can say that this is one of three best, the others being the "Trois Oeuveres", played by Jean-Pierre Ferey, and the lone collection of Koechlin's choral works, the name of which escapes me (it is available on Amazon). If you are interested in Koechlin's chamber music, browse quickly through the welter of chamber collections, then save some time and money and get this one.

2 out of 5 stars same old same old.......2004-02-19

This is the second time I've been disappointed in a Soulstance CD. The music is great. No objection with that. But it's the same as their other CDs. I don't mean it sounds the same--it IS the same except for 4 or 5 of the 11 tracks. I would be very hesitant to buy another CD of theirs.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Nicole Conte, you'll LOVE this too........2002-05-03

Can't really improve on the review below. This is so chic and smooth: I love it. A few months ago, I thought I agreed with the reviewer below that this was their BEST. But now, I'm not so sure. "Act On!" is every bit as fantastic as "En Route". Just sit back, close your eyes, and you're on Ipanema Beach and the waves are lapping up on the sand ... so relaxing. So beautiful and melodic. These guys have perfected Bossa Nova.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Soulstance CD's.......2001-11-21

First, it's a bit confusing the way Soulstance's Cd's are organized. So like I said in another review, this is their second album, "Act On" is their first release and "Truth, Simplicity and Love" is Schema (the label) American release which is a sort of "Best of Soulstance". All three albums are great - but this one is by far had better tracks than Act On. Truth Simplicity and Love pretty much had the best of Act On so that's the best buy, if you've never been exposed to Soulstance or heard their work in the Break N Bossa compilations. Hope I wasn't too confusing.

So if you only get one Soulstance Album, however, this is the one. It's great! Nice tracks, very smooth, and I liked it even better than "T,S and L".

The sound of Soulstance is lounge. Sometimes it wans in and out of funk, but more than anything it's pretty much musical and chilled - Bossa Nova/Italia. Think a mix between S-Tone Inc., Nicola Conte and Los Ladrones "Montana Rusa" album. Sometimes it will remind you of a summer themed soundtrack from the 60's. Great tunes, great albums and I'm really enjoying this CD.

Good recording, Can feel the changes in the music that were being brewed at the time. Must listen several times in order to get the feeling, ambiance of the work of this magnificent orchestra. GO GET IT! Catchie tunes, nostalgic tunes. A must for the connoisseur

5 out of 5 stars Solid Cuban dance music!.......2003-02-14

Founded in 1939, Orquesta Aragon is one of Cuba's most venerated and longest-lived dance bands. The group hit its heyday in the 1950s as the ultimate tipica ensemble, combining muscular Afro-Cuban rhythms with delicate, European-tinged melodies. Aragon's distinctive violin-and-flute arrangements influenced the sound and growth of salsa music in the United States, helping shape the musical vocabulary of '70s bandleaders such as salseros Ruben Blades and Hector LaVoe. This new album shows Aragon still going strong with an influx of younger new members and a modern musical vocabulary. This is a lovely album, easy on the ears and tempting to the hips. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The Route from Past to Present.......2002-03-10

This new CD by the legendary charanga group, Orquesta Aragon is extremely well crafted. The Aragon reaches deep into its vast repertoire to redo such songs as Guasabeando Rock & Roll and No Quiero Lios from the 1950's as well as some of their of their more recent rhythms such as the Cha-Onda, which was created by their late cellist Alejandro Tomas Valdes. There is something for everyone on this album. There are up tempo songs such as Ahora Si Sabrosea by their composer and violinist Dagoberto Gonzalez and Bailando Sucu Sucu by pianist Orlando Perez. For traditionalists, Danzones such as La Gioconda and Si Envidia have been recorded again without compromising the elegance of the original recordings. Si Envidia was written by the late director Rafael Lay Sr., whose son, Rafael Lay Jr. is the current director the Orquesta Aragon. In the mid 1950's, Rafael Lay Sr. took a risk by incorporating a new rhythm into the Aragon's repertoire, the Cha Cha Cha. Almost 50 years later, his son has taken a similar risk by incorporating a modern element into their repertoire, Rap or Hip Hop. This song will disappoint some, surprise others and introduce a whole new generation to this great Cuban orquestra. This CD will show that musical mastery can be transposed into any rhythm or style. The craftmanship of the Aragon has crossed time and I am sure will bridge generations to appreciate the unique style that they have been perfecting for more than 60 years. This album is must for both the young and old, for new friends as well old friends of this, the greatest of all Charanga Bands.

5 out of 5 stars ORQUESTA ARAGON- "EN ROUTE".......2001-12-18

This is Orquesta Aragon's latest album and like all previous ones, is surely to please not only Aragon's longtime loyal fans but also cuban music newcomer fans. New versions of old original Aragon hits, like "Guasabeando El Rock & Roll", "Caserita Villareña, "Si,Envidia", "Bailando El Sucu-Sucu", "Un Real de Hielo", "Di Que No Me Quieres Ya", "No Quiero Lio", "La Gioconda","Ahora Es Cuando Canto Yo", "Ahora Si Sabroseao","A Bailar Mi Cha-Onda", and a terrific new descarga version of Aragon's 1956 impossible to find hit, "A Gozar La Vida", all guarantee you to get you up from your seat and dance!
In all honesty Rafael Lay Jr. has carried on the torch well and shows that his superb skills not only as a violinist but as a director, clearly match those of his late father Rafael Lay Sr. a great cuban music golden era musician.
I highly recommend this album. Order it and it will definitely become a favorite in your collection.

        Album Description

The twentieth century yielded a powerful explosion of musical points of view. Many composers embraced increasing complexity as a way of capturing the statistical, overcrowded, ambiguous, and combative nature of modern life. But others, such as the late American masters Morton Feldman and Earl Kim, believed strongly in the power and poignancy of even a single sound; Rather than embracing chaos, they strove to reduce musical thought to a refined, precise essence. The works on this album, which span thirty-five years of his creative life, show Earl Kim to be a master of interior passion, with an exacting sense of sonority, harmony, and pacing. His music combines elusiveness, ambiguity, and ellipses with a restrained romanticism, yielding works of troubled stillness and abiding beauty

Kim's musical landscapes are uncluttered, slowly progressing, often monophonic. Musical moments flourish briefly, and then rarely reappear. Continuity and silence are carefully balanced. Although the sound-world is very restrained, shocks and surprises still occur.

Kim was deeply attracted to the human voice; most of his output features it. For his texts, he turned most often to the works of Samuel Beckett. The reclusive writer was famously difficult about granting permission to composers to set his words to music; Kim was one of only a handful of composers to receive his consent.

This disc, the first dedicated solely to his music, was prepared and recorded under his supervision shortly before his death.

Exercises en Route was composed from 1963-70. The full work received its premiere in 1971 with Benita Valente and an ensemble conducted by the composer. It is scored for soprano/narrator, flute/piccolo, oboe, clarinet, violin, cello, and two percussionists, who perform an array of exotic instruments, including African and Japanese hand and stick drums and a Japanese bell and woodclapper. Exercises is one of Kim's most important Beckett settings

“Dear Linda, a letter written by Anne Sexton to her daughter in the spring of 1969, bears the date Wed. 2:45 p.m. It is a letter of advice, confession, and love. The musical narrative consists of several episodes that depict what might have been the shifting turmoil of Anne Sexton's life. The closing measures take the form of a simple canon when the mother speaks to her daughter of her own mother.”
