About the Artist
Juan de Dios Ventura Soriano was born in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, on the 8th of march in 1940. Son of a modest family, he dreamt in his childhood to become the best dominican architect, however, the 2nd of june the year 1965 his live and dreams took a big turn. On that day, as a result of a juvenile impulse wich couldn't be stopped, he presented himself with some friends in a program of devotees which was broadcasted by "La Voz de la Alegria" weekly. The young Soriano, only 16 years of age, obtained first place in the contest. In 1959, Juan de Dios decided to take on his surname 'Johnny Ventura'. In 1962 he sang with the Combo Cribe of Luis Pérez, with whom he recorded Cuidado con el cuabero, of which he was the autor, and La agarradera, of Luis Pérez. It was with this band that he recorded his first LP. In 1963 Johnny Ventura was recruited by the famous Papa Molina to join La Super Orquesta San José, which he directed at that time. He joined as singer and as player of the "güira". In 1964, the cuban empresario Angel Guinea insisted on Johnny Ventura to create his own orchestra, which we today still know, as an important part of the history of popular dominican music, as the Combo Show. In 1965, with his orchestra, Ventura recorded for the Fonogram label the album La coquetona, La resbalosa and El turun tun tun. In 1967 he travelled to the United States, where he imediatly became a hit playing such venues as Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall. Puerto Rico, Colombia, Curaçao hailed him since then. Over more then fourty years Juan de Dios Ventura Soriano, better know as Johnny Ventura, consolidaded a work, that is now a part of the american musics heritage, as the roots of the continent.

This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

Olga is one of those few artists that can perform practically any genre of music and sound as if she has been doing it for years. I never understand why people always think she is just "merengue". Anyhoo, this album is a collection of pop, tropical, ballads, dance, salsa, etc. Despite the wide variety Olga makes this a very cohesive effort.

Olga Tanon--Pero Que Linda!.......2006-10-23

Soy Como Tu is yet another successful album by the gorgeous Olga Tanon. Although she has yet to fully return to her merengue roots, this CD is full of songs worth hearing. Many of the tunes are upbeat and easy to listen to, others are soft, sweet ballads that show off the range of Olga's voice. Even so, Soy Como Tu is certainly a new take on Olga's wide range of talents. I highly recommend this album to any of her fans, although some may still be disappointed in the divergence from her previous style. Don't let this one pass you buy--it's worth the money even if it's not exactly La Tanon we remember.

This album is fantastic although I love more "Una Nueva Mujer". "Soy como Tu" is mix of pop, tropical and ballads. My favorite songs are: Maria, Angeles, Duele Duele, Flaca O Gordita, Ay Que Lindo, Habla Claro, Tanta Habladuria, Sigue Moviendote y Vive Tu Vida. This album is definitively a good and must buy.

Diehard salsa fans have grumbled about the artistic liberties taken by genre queen India on Soy Diferente, her first disc under the Univision label. Indeed, this is an adventurous, all-over-the-map outing, most notable for its incorporation of the red-hot reggaeton rhythms currently burning up radio playlists. Purists may scoff and call it a play for commercial viability, but Soy Diferente is still a strong showcase for India's emotive, urgent vocal work. She also co-wrote all of the album's tracks. Fans should also recall that India dabbled in jazz, hip-hop and English-language club music before--and after--hitting her stride as a salsa queen. The title track is featured in both a reggaeton version and as a "salsaton" shaker, which flows seamlessly between the two genres. "Cuando Hieres A Una Mujer" is a straight-ahead salsa track, buoyed by the appearance of reggaeton diva Ivy Queen. Salsa legend Tito Nieves offers tempting vocal licks during "No Es Lo Mismo;" and India's mother, Gloria Viera, pops up during the sweet-and-spicy "Madre e Hija aka Madre." And India is still at her sizzling best amid the blaring horns and sweltering percussion of salsa tracks "Un Amor Obsesivo," "Lagrimas" and "Tengo Que Dejarte Ir." As a huge admire of India's work, I must say I feel this album. Although many critics might scoff and say it was a "nice attempt better luck next time", I will totally dissagree. I dont knw about many but I have witness India perform tracks of this album live at clubs and I feel them. I love drving down HOLLYWOOD BLVD and bombing this CD off the wall......I hope she might come out with a live CD so many witness the power and emotion India delivers on stage. * Solamente Una Noche, Una Amor Obsesivo, Lagrimas, y Tengo Que Dejarte Ir are beautiful......My still favorite album must still be SOLA....wow messages in every song!

It's trend to have Regaeton but it's hard to dance with it if you are only salsa dancer.

But Salsaeton is helping you to follow the trend and it's easier to dance Salsa with.

I can't understand why people don't like the mix of reggaeton and salsa on this album. I am a big India fan and I love all of her albums whether they are the more traditional salsa style or salsaton or reggaeton or whatever. La India still has one of the greatest voices I have ever heard and I enjoy every single one of her songs.

A la verdad que este cd me gusto de principio a fin. No se dejen llevar de los otros reviews, este cd vale la pena. Espere bastante para comprarlo al creerlo una porqueria, pero me equivoque. En este cd la mayoria de las canciones son en salsa incluyendo par de canciones en reggaeton. El reggaeton es lo que esta sonando so no me soprendio que ella incluyera par de canciones. Los productores son Isidro Infante, Sergio George y Emilio Estefan entre otros. Ustedes saben que las mejores canciones de la India han sido producido por Isidro Infante y Sir George. Un hit tras de otro. A la verdad que este me gusta mas que el disco anterior que tenia to ese chorro de baladas y que solo pego Seduceme que era la unica cancion que me gusto. Las canciones en reggaeton le quedaron bien, el beat y la melodia estan perfecto ni muy rapido o muy lento. Las canciones en salsa que se puede decir es La India, al principio estas suenan bien entonces poquito a poquito te dan con ganas de bailar cuando se acaba te quedas con las ganas de mas. Tambien tiene sus artistas invitados como Tito Nieves, Ivy Queen y Cheka ademas incluye un dueto con su madre. Canciones favoritas son: (Lagrimas, Un amor obsesivo, Soy diferente en las dos versiones salsaton y reggaeton, Solamente una noche en salsa y reggaeton y Bugarron que me da gana de reir.)

Kids love this CD!.......2007-07-04

I am a teacher in a dual immersion (Spanish) elementary school. My students beg me to play this CD all the time. The songs are fun, catchy and easy to learn. I would highly recommend this CD for anyone who speaks Spanish and has kids, anyone who wants their kids to learn some Spanish songs, and for teachers who want to incorporate music to their class.

Best learning songs for kids!.......2005-07-09

I first heard this music when my older daughter was a year old. She was too young to appreciate anything but the beat, but she sure liked that! I located a copy this year, and my two kids absolutely love to sing along. At only 2, the younger one has absorbed many of the phonemes of the Spanish language thanks to this album.

The kids like it so much that they request it about 50% of the time (and another album the other 50%). It's interesting enough for both parents to put up with the repetition, too (which is rare)!

My preschoolers love the songs. They're catchy and easy to learn with familiar words/concepts. Soy Una Pizza is a hilarious song that the kids love to sing and enact. La Bamba is one of the best versions I have heard and the children love it as well. Un Pulpito is a wonderful song...All the songs are wonderful and I have found them very easy to incorporate into my classroom. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Album Description

This recital gives a fascinating insight into the many influences on Cuban culture: among them 400 years of Spanish colonial rule and 60 years of exposure to North American culture prior to the 1959 revolution. The music ranges across Afro-Cuban rhythms, twentieth century harmonies, elements of jazz and impressionism, traditional European forms of composition, the country dance form known as the son montuno, and contemporary harmonization of Yoruba melodies from the Oriente region.

Solo Cuban Guitar Music Highlighted in Diverse Program.......2005-04-24

This is a highly listenable recording from Naxos spotlighting the importance of Cuban solo guitar music. The talented guitarist is Marco Tamayo, and the selections reflect a compendium of the finest among Cuban composers: Ñico Rojas, the self taught guitarist, composer and leading figure in the filin (feeling) movement; Harold Gramatges, the prolific and much respected classical composer; Moisés Simons, the composer of the popular "El Manicero" ("The Peanut-Seller"), credited here to Edward Simons; and Leo Brouwer, an otherwise avant-garde experimentalist. Although many of the arrangements are within the soft-jazz, Earl Klugh-like space, the pieces do not belie their Cuban heritage and range from the traditional dance genres such as zapateo, guiajira and son pregón, through Rojas' jazz-influenced harmonies to Gramatges' neo-classical miniatures.

The tone can be at once seductive and then later inspirational, yet what remains consistent is Tamayo's delicate and assured playing, which beautifully conveys the gentle relaxed quality of these works, Some pieces stand alone, such as "El Manicero" (which some may recognize as a variation of the tropical song Judy Garland sang in the "Born in a Trunk" number in "A Star Is Born") or the "Preludio" (the theme from the film "Soy Cuba") and "Canción Triste" by Carlos Fariñas. The remainder function as part of short suites, for instance, the lovely canción-danza pairing by Aldo Rodriguez, which gives a nice structure to otherwise disparate musical styles. The last eight tracks represent an adaptation of Yoruba religious music by Hector Angulo. Quite beautiful and atmospheric on their own, these short pieces convey some intriguing rhythmic drive and complexity that seem odd for a guitar by itself to express. But the Cuban-born Tamayo (now teaching master classes in Salzburg at the Mozarteum) shows impressive dexterity in capturing such emotions on the guitar. As a whole, the album reveals a repertoire well worth discovering and another dimension of Cuban music beyond salsa and the Buena Vista Social Club. This is another of Naxos' discounted recordings ($6.98), an excellent purchase.

With so many guitarists recording the classical guitar standards , this is a refreshing album with largely unknown but also very interesting guitar compositions which are pleasant and substantial. The pieces give a good overview of guitar composers from cuba, played by Marco Tamayo, who is refreshingly musical and technically on top of his playing.

Completely enthralled.......2005-03-08

This is a delightful disc. If you appreciate the technique of Jordi Savall, and the siren sweet voice of Montserrat Figueras, you will be instantly captivated by their daughter.

In what appears to me to be a very personal project based upon moving poems authored by Miguel Marti i Pol (dedication appears untranslated in Catalan), Ms. Savall is invoking a song tradition of harp playing accompanied by the singer which was long ago lost in all but a couple of cultures. It thrives in the rich cultural Catalan region, as is evidenced by Ms. Savall's own compositions.

You too will submit to her enthralling spell.

This CD is okay, but once you have heard one song you have heard them all. The music gets a little repetitive, and Arianna has a bit of heaviness in her voice that I do not personally like. It is a nice CD, but not one that I would listen to over and over again.

Stunning new talent.......2004-09-25

Whilst the classical training shines through, her composition often surprises with its contemporary feel (although she nods to her Catlan roots).

Lovers of harp, and young soprano voice need look no further. The lady has some pair of lungs.

Musically this is ocassionally reminiscent of Andreas Vollenwieder although far more minimalist.. but then she starts singing...and quite simply...WOW!

She's so perfectly in control of her vocal instrument, and she's so pitched. How she manages this but still sounds so relaxed, I will never know. I could go on about her technically, but that would diminish her voice, a thing of great beauty.

Worth the entry for "Bella Terra" alone. I look forward to more of this young woman's work.

Just beautiful.......2004-04-13

Arianna Savall proves herself to be quite an accomplished singer, composer, and harpist in this new collection of mainly her own compositions. This is not my typical type of music, but I still listen to it constantly, and I bought it as soon as it was available in America. I'm glad that it is once again available, as it was out of stock for a very long time. Savall's pure straight-tone may not appeal to some classical vocal buffs, but as part of the Catalan early music scene ruled by her parents, Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras, straight tone comes natural to her. Her voice is clearer than her mother's and, if somewhat less emotional, it is also more ethereal and her technique is solid. The songs themselves run from Middle Eastern influenced to Catalan folk songs.

Obra de Arte Mal Entendida.......2005-07-13

Este es probablemente el mejor disco de los tacubos. Sin embargo, muchas personas sienten que no sirve porque es tan diferente a otros disco de la banda, pero esa diference es lo que hace este album una obra de orta. Canciones como El Padre y Dos Ninos demuestras la madures del grupo. Este grupo es mas a alegre en otras producciones, pero no hay nada de malo en ser mas analitico. La primera vez que escuche este disco no me gusto francamente, pero despues me di cuenta de que el disco es impresionante despues de escucharlo varias veces La musica es genial. Este album es una excellente inversion.

An interesting experimental album.......2005-05-06

In 1999 Café Tacvba released this double album entitled `Reves/Yo soY' (both were also sold separately) Again, the graphic design is very unusual but compelling at the same time, the double cd edition didn't have any bonus at all but the two cd's in a carton box with a very suggestive design on it.

The idea behind this double album seemed interesting but odd at the same time: `Yo soy' would include 52 new tracks (they are actually 15, but two of them are divided into many) from the band and `Reves' would include 12 instrumental themes original from the band and performed by themselves and other artists, such as Kronos Quartet, Arghul and Compañia Nacional de Danza Folklorica.

Yo soY

This album is different from its antecessors, we listen to a more mature and calm band, the vocal style of Nru has obviously improved from last album (listen to `El rio' and you will know what I'm talking about) and the mature ness of the band is present in the entire album. This album may not contain their most famous pieces but I believe what happened is that a lot of people got so caught with `Re' that they were expecting something similar.

Songs like `El rio', `El polen' (sung again by Emmanuel) are pieces that didn't transcend as much as `La locomotora' for example, but that are very interesting pieces, the piano and the vocals in `El polen' are something like never before shown in their albums, `Bicicleta' is another very interesting piece from this disc.

Reves

Among all the Café Tacvba albums this is the one I find the most experimental. It contains 9 instrumental songs performed by the band in a variety of styles that are hard to define. One of the highlights of these is track 9, that would later be entitled `Reves'.

The most interesting pieces from this album are tracks 7, 8 and 10. `10' is a musical piece made with the sound of people dancing, what you actually listen to is people stomping their feet on the ground directed by Nieves Paniagua, this track gives you a sense of emptiness on the performance but it definitely is one of a kind song. `5.1' performed by `Arghul' is a classical type piece performed with `clarinetes'. The last piece is `M.C.' performed by none other that the `Kronos Quartet', this song is just beautifully played and well executed.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable album for any Café Tacvba fan interested in the evolution of the band and not in having another `Re'. It shows an evolution and mature ness, but it is not definitely the ideal album if you are going to listen to them for the first time, you had better buy their first two albums, enjoy them, understand them and then listen to how they evolved in these two interesting pieces that are `Reves/Yo soY'

These guys are re-inventing music!! It is such a refreshing CD!! After years of being bombarded with the boy bands and the britney spears, and the limp biscuits this album is an oasis of beauty, creativity, talent, and courage! Once you listen to this album you will get hooked forever! It is like nothing you have heard in your life! Buy it!

Latin Soul. Love her voice........2005-09-25

Thank you Musica for introducing me to this album. I can listen to this India CD all day and never get tired of hearing her sing. She has such a soulful voice and sing with great expression. I am also an Africa American female who cannot speak spanish(haven't since high school) but I can sing her songs. My favorite is O Ella O Yo. I love to sing that song. I especially love the way she adds a salsa twist to George Benson's R&B classic, "I Just Wanna Hang Around You". On her album "Sobre el Fuego" she also adds a latin twist to Chaka Khan's R&B Hit "Through The Fire". If La India comes to your town, you must go & see her perform. Musica & I went to see her when she came to Philly for the 4th of July Welcome America celebration in 2004 during the Salsa On The Parkway event. She has soooo much energy & knows how the work up the audience. La India...keep the songs coming.

I went to school with India back in the Bronx and it was evident that Linda aka India was destined fror greatness! all her music not limmited to Salsa. Everytime she performs in Orlando I make sure I do not miss it. Her voice is a beautiful in person as it is on record. No special affects there baby it's all her! My mom introduced me to La India a couple years ago, I think when I was about 16..I am now 20 and I have'nt stopped listening to her since..My mom introduced me to the song, Ese Hombre and I played that song out..But then she had to give me the album!! I was so done after that..Im a black female but I love all kinds of music, and salsa is no exception..La India has such a passion in her voice that I call her the latin Teena Marie (who is my favorite singer)..I cant describe her voice..She just takes you places and she has such a range..Oh my god!!! Im so in love with her voice..You cant go wrong with La India..I recently saw her live at a salsa festival here in Philly and she sounds just as good live if not better...She's talented, sweet and beautiful..Get the album if you dont have it..My fave tracks are basically all of them...But Im still hooked to Ese hombre..She murders that song and tears the man down all at the same time..Very passionate..Get the album please!!!!

I first heard La India's Dicen Que Soy in 94 in Miami. El Zol 95 played her constantly, and I had no complaints. I was so glad that there was another powerful female singer to represent us in Salsa.

La India is like many powerful and possessed women vocalists that I appreciate; with the addition of heavy percussion: Patti Labelle, Rachelle Farrell, Laura Nyro, Celine Dion... add your favorites.

Her lyrics are honest and hit the nail on the head; leaves you feeling empowered and released.

I love salsa music and fell in love with India's album!!! This album has the most amazing rhythms!!!!! I was totally taken in by both the rythm and the singing--she sings with such passion! If this album doesn't make you sing and dance at the same time well nothing will!!!!!!!!
