I saw this live and was completely captivated. Without the visuals, it is just as wonderful. I too wish they would release the rest of this marathon extravaganza. It deserves to be memorialized.

Great variety of fantastic singers!.......2002-01-07
There are no problems with the live sound, which is crisp, clean and sounds like it could have come from a recording studio. My only complaint is the lack of an overture or other orchestral number that would showcae the Met orchetra. Overall a CD well worth your money. Hopefully DG will release another CD soon with the rest of the concert. You won't find these selections anywhere else so every minute of it will be new and fresh. Fantastic for hard core opera fans or beginners. Highly Recommended!

Dorumsgaard; who knew?.......2006-07-18
Dorumsgaard is an amazing composer who has, I've come to find out, over 20 volumes of beautiful music written for the voice and piano.
This has led me to other singers who have recorded his music.
This CD, however, stands alone as a great recital from top to bottom by Frederica von Stade.
Recitals should always be as thoughtful as this one.......2002-07-26
The Ives set, with its contrasts in color and mood, could be a microcosm for the entire recital. "Memories," with its two contrasting parts, seems to be the audience favorite, judging from the laughter and spontaneous applause. And "Tom Sails Away" quietly quotes a familiar George M. Cohan song with gentle poignancy. The Mahler set is gorgeously done, as well as a colorful Poulenc group. And Benjamin Britten's haunting chord changes put a set of British folk songs in a fresh new context.
The two encores could not be more different: a sly rendition of the "Tipsy Song" from Offenbach's La Périchole, followed by Carol Hall's touching "Jenny Rebecca," which von Stade apparently learned after she heard it sung by Barbra Streisand.
Two small quibbles that keep this from being a five-star recommendation: the piano sound is a bit metallic, in the way that some live recordings can be. This should not deter anyone from purchasing the disc, and is no reflection whatsoever on Martin Isepp, whose outstanding playing and instincts are crucial to this recital's success. Also, the booklet notes are a bit sloppily edited. The track numbers begin with 1 through 7, then skip to 9 - i.e., track 9 should be no. 8, track 10 is no. 9, and so on. And the last paragraph just ends, with an incomplete sentence dangling in the air. But this is minor; just take a nice pen and make the changes in the booklet yourself.
An unusually varied recital by one of the most poised and intelligent singers of our time.
Absolutely priceless early Von Stade not available elsewhere.......1999-08-28

A Great Recording of Rare Ballet Music by Bonynge.......2005-10-29
The first piece presented in this suite is the famous Grand Pas de Deux from the 1869 ballet "Don Quixote". The ballet was created by the great choreographer Marius Petipa, unrivaled Balletmaster of the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg, and set to the music of the composer Leon (or Ludwig) Minkus (1826-1917), who from 1871 untill 1886 was the Romanov's "First Imperial Ballet Composer", and contrary to popular belief, Petipa preferred Minkus to any other composer he ever worked with, Tchaikovsky included. The "Don Quixote" Grand Pas de Deux is not presented in Minkus's original orchestration but rather in an arrangement by Peter March (founder of the Tchaikovsky Foundation). His arrangements for the Grand Adagio are adequate though not very interesting, but the 'Variation of Basilio' and the Grand Coda are well done. The worst is his treatment of the 'Variation of Kitri', where March has orchestrated the number for solo flute rather for solo harp, as originally arranged. This variation was actually written by Riccardo Drigo (1846-1930) for the great Ballerina Mathilde Kschessinskaya in 1903, when she danced in Alexander Gorsky's of "Don Quixote" at the Mariinsky Theatre. Likely all March had to work with was a piano reduction of this number, as for many years that was all that was available outside of communist Russia. Bonynge's conducting, which can pretty much make or break this pas, is rather good. (NOTE - see CD Capriccio 10 540-41 for a recording of the full-length "Don Quixote" conducted by Boris Spassov w/ the Sofia Natn'l Opera Orch., as well as CD Naxos 8.557065-66 conducted by Nayden Todorov again with the Sofia Nat'l Opera Orch. Both recordings are of the score of "Don Quixote" in Minkus's orignal hand, and offer the same music. Though they are not 100% complete with regard to Minkus's original score, they do contain most of the later interpolations by other composers for the revivals of Gorsky (1903) and Zarakhov (1949). Another recording of Minkus's "Don Quixote" is of John Lanchbery's well done re-orchestrations/adaptations for Rudolf Nureyev's 1973 revival for the Australian Ballet. [...].
Next is the "Blue Bird" Pas de Deux from the 3rd Act of Petipa's 1892 ballet "The Sleeping Beauty" set to Tchaikovsky's magnificent music. For the most part Bonynge conducts the music exactly as it would be for the stage, with the exception of the coda, performed by the orchestra at an extremely rushed tempo, making the Blubird's required brise-voles impossible.
Another Tchaikovsky number follows, this time the Grand Pas de Deux from the 1892 ballet "The Nutcracker". Bonynge does a fine job conducting as does the orchestra playing, but, as with the inclusion of the "Blue Bird Pas de Deux", I find it a useless addition to this recording, being that there are over a million different recordings of Tchaikovsky's ballets. Bonynge's conducting is first rate, but unfortunatly the allegro ending of the famous 'Variation of the Sugar Plum Fairy' is edited out.
For the 4th track we have an extract from the Mazilier/Deldevez ballet "Paquita", composed by Leon Minkus for addition to Petipa's revival of the work in 1881. The Minkus music as recorded here is again a reorchestration. The origins of this particular piece of music are rather interesting - for a number of years, all that was available outside of communist Russia of the "Paquita" Grand Pas Classique was an arrangement of the music used by the touring company of Anna Pavlova. The orchestrator was Albert Zabel, who was, during the late 19th/early 20th century, the lead harpist of the orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre. This arrangement of Minkus's music ended up only surviving in parts for various instruments, and was obtained by the Tchaikovsky Foundation at some point in the 1950s. The music was then orchestrated by Peter March, who expanded on the surviving arrangements while making use of a piano reduction of the complete music. When this recording was made, this was the only available arrangement of Minkus's music Bonynge had access to, and so, wisely, he recorded it. Pavlova often performed the famous "Paquita" Grand Pas Classique as a Pas de Deux, which is basically just the standard "Paquita" without all of the extra variations. Untill 1909 this was how the pas was performed, as originally staged by Petipa in 1881. Thus, what is known as the "Paquita Pas de Deux" is merely the "Paquita Grand Pas Classique" with only 2 variations. In 1909 the great Ballerina Mathilde Kschessinskaya began the tradition of having an entire suite of variations included in the "Paquita" Grand Pas Classique, when she invited her fellow danseuses to participate in a performance of the Pas in St. Petersburg for a celebration performance in honor of the birthday of Catherine II. The tradition has remained to the present day. Those familiar with the music of this composition will notice that the ending of the Coda/Finale is extended. Pavlova often had this done to have music accompany the dancers taking their bows at the end of a performance. Recorded here is the Entree, Grand Adagio, Dance for the Corps de Ballet, Variation-1 (a waltz, usually for the lead male dancer of the pas. Music is by Cesare Pugni, and comes from his score for Petipa's 1866 Grand Ballet "Florida"), Variation-2 (a polonaise for solo violin. Music is by Mikhail Ivanov, and comes from his score for Petipa's 1888 Grand Ballet "The Vestal"), and the Coda generale.
The next pas de deux is perhaps the most rare and wonderful piece included in this entire suite. It is the Pas de Deux from the ballet "La Esmeralda". Originally created by the great choreographer Jules Perrot in London in 1844 to the music of Cesare Pugni (1802-1870), the ballet was a huge success that became a useful vehicle for the great Ballerinas of old. The ballet was staged in St. Petersburg in 1848 by Perrot, and revised many times after by Petipa. His last revival was in 1899 for Mathilde Kschessinskaya. Especially for her performance, Riccardo Drigo composed the Pas de Deux recorded here. The first variation for the male is not by Drigo, but by Pugni, and was actually interpolated into this pas during the 1940s by the great Kirov dancer Vakhtang Chabukiani. This music was originally a variation for Esmeralda in the full-length ballet. The Coda is also by Pugni, and is actually the "Dance of the Nubians" from Act II of Petipa's 1862 ballet "The Pharoah's Daughter",". Bonynge does an excellent job conducting the music of this Pas de Deux. The pas as recorded here is in an orchestration by, again, Peter March.
The following pas de deux is known in ballet simply as "Grand Pas Classique". The music comes from the 1830 opera-ballet "Le Dieu et la Bayadere", which had the dance sections choreographed by Fillipo Taglioni for his daughter, the legendary Marie, to music by Dabiel Auber. In 1949 the choregrapher Victor Gsovsky extracted the music recorded here from Auber's score, and choreographed a wonderfully adademic pas de deux to it for the Ballerina Yvette Chauvire and the Danseur Vladimir Skouratov. It has since become a show-piece danced by many companies around the world. Bonynge handles the music well for the most part, but he conducts the music for the female variation entirely to fast. No ballerina could ever perform the traditional choreography to such a rushed tempo.
The ballet "Flower Festival at Genzano" premiered in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1858. It was choreographed by the Danish Ballet Master August Bournonville, and the pas de deux presented here is still performed in his original choreography nearly 150 years later. The music is by Eduard Helsted (1816-1900) and Holgar Paulli (1810-1891), both of whom composed many ballets staged by Bournonville (Helsted is the only composer often credited with teh music for the Pas de deux recorded here). Bonynge does a fabulous job with the music for this piece, with the orchestra playing the music exactly as it would be for the stage.
The final addition is the so-called "Le Corsaire Pas de deux", in an orchestration by John Lanchbery (1923-2003). Of all of the ballets in the classical repertoire, "Le Corsaire" is perhaps the most embellished and altered work, today being performed with musical contributions from no less than 11 different composers, most of whom have yet to be credited in such productions as American Ballet Theatre's ridiculous staging, or the Boston Ballet's, from which ABT's is derived. The famous "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux" has a colorful and complicated history, which usually suprises those who know it well. "Le Corsaire" had its premiere in 1856 at the Theatre de l'Academie Imperiale de Musique (AKA the "old" Paris Opera), staged for the renowned Ballerina Carolina Rosati by the great Balletmaster Joseph Mazilier. The music was originally created by Adolphe Adam (1803-1856). The ballet was brought to the Imperial Ballet (today the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet) of St. Petersburg, Russia by the Balletmaster Jules Perrot in 1858 (with assistance from Marius Petipa), where it became, and remained, one of the most popular works in all the repertory, and a useful vehicle for the great Ballerinas of the day. Marius Petipa revived the ballet on several occasions over the course of over 40 years, his last revival being in 1899 for the Italian Prima Ballerina Assoluta Pierina Legnani who danced the lead role of Medora.
Petipa's 1899 revival was given a new production at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1915. For the occasion the second Act was modified - Petipa's interpolated 'Pas de Six' to the music of Pugni (dating from 1863), and the 'Pas des Eventails' from the original staging, were replaced by a new 'Pas d'action' by Samuil Andrianov (noted teacher of the young Balanchine). This is the number which would one day be known as the "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux". It was originally staged as a 'Pas de Trois' (as in modern stagings of the full-length work), and was first danced by Tamara Karsavina as Medora, Andrianov as Conrad, and Mikhail Obukhov as a suitor (this role would be later replaced in Pyotr Gusev's 1955 revival at the Maly Theatre in Leningrad by a new character named Ali, which was derived from teh character known is Russia as the 'Rhab', who came into the ballet in early Soviet times). Although the music for the "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux" is almost always credited exclusively to either Adam or Drigo in modern times, its traditional version in fact contains the music of 3 composers - the opening adagio was fashioned by Drigo from his own composition, a nocturne titled "The Dreams of Spring" (the solo for clarinet in Drigo's original orchesreation and the sustaining arrangement sound very much like the original title suggests). The male variation, which is today danced by all the male dancers in the Pas de Deux, was taken from the composer Yuli Gerber's score for Petipa's 1870 ballet "Trilby". Karsavina's variation, which is still traditionally danced in the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet's version and American Ballet Theatre's version, among others, was taken from the composer Baron Boris Fitinhof-Schell's score for the 1893 Petipa/Ivanov/Cecchetti ballet "Cinderella". The coda was composed by Drigo especially for the Pas de Deux.
The 'Pas d'action' (or 'Pas de deux a trois' as it is so often incorrectly referred to today) went through revisions in 1931 when Agrippina Vaganova turned it into a 'Pas de Deux' for the graduation performance of Natalia Dudinskaya, partnered by Konstantin Sergeyev, thus transforming it into the "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux". The male dancing elements of the Pas went through changes throughout the 1930s and 1940s by Vakhtang Chabukiani, adding in more athletic and virtuoso dancing (it was throughout this time that the suitor became the 'Rhab', or slave, and thus the choregraphy changed even more).
Rudolf Nureyev staged the "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux" for the first time in teh west in 1961 not long after he defected from the Soviet Union for himself and Margot Fonteyn (the cover sleeve of the orignal LP release of this recording has a picture of Nureyev and Fonteyn dancing the "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux"). For his staging, Nureyev had the "original" music re-orchestrated by the Royal Opera House conductor John Lanchbery (1923-2003), likely because the only manuscript of the score available in the west at that time was of a piano reduction. Nureyev had performed the "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux" for the first time in Russia in 1958 with Alla Sizova for thier graduation performance (there is a famous film of this performance). For her performance, Sizova substituted the traditional variation which was danced by Karsavina in 1915 for the 'Variation of the Dryad Queen' from the scene "The Kingdom of the Dryads" from "Don Quixote". Nureyev also utilized this same variation for Fonteyn when he staged the "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux" in 1961. Though it is widely believed that this variation is by Minkus, it is really the work of the composer Anton Simon (1850-1916), who composed additional music for Alexander Gorsky's revivals of "Don Quixote" in 1900 (at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow) and in 1903 (at the Mariinsky Theatre).
Here, Bonynge has recorded the Lanchbery revision of the "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux" as staged by Nureyev. He does a wonderful job conducting, particularly in the opening adage. The variations are conducted exactly as they would be for the stage, with the exception of the last section of the female variation (usually at this point the Ballerina will be performing her so-called 'Italian-fouettes') which this time is not conducted to fast, but now to slow. Musically I would rather hear this Pas de Deux in its original orchestration, but Lanchbery's orchestrations are nonetheless entertaining. (Note - There are only two recordings of the "Le Corsaire" pas de deux with the original polka variation danced by Karsavina in 1915 to the music Fitinhof-Schell, which is still danced by the Kirov/Mariinksy Ballet (most of the time) when the pas is performed, among other companies such as ABT. It is presented in Lanchbery's re-orchestrations by Terence Kern and the Orchestra of the London Festival Ballet. See CD Angel "Ballet Gala" 5-69089-2 out-of-print. The other is the recording titled "Musiques pour les Ballets de Marius Petipa", available on the label Accord, with the "Le Corsaire Pas de Deux" presented in its original orchestration.)
For those who have long wanted to get a hold of this disc, and don't feel like paying the absolutely ridiculous prices that some sellers are asking for it, remember, as was said above, all of the music included in Bonynge's "Ballet Gala" series has since been included in the 10 CD set "Fete du Ballet".

Beautiful.......2005-11-20
Simply, this is a beautiful piece of music. Over-analyzing it, criticizing it because of alleged subtle flaws, damning with faint praise (the usual is that the long work has "many fine moments") just doesn't make sense. A good to great performance of this sells itself quite well without the millennial cynicism and insensitivity (not meaning callous but simply lacking in sensitivity). Judging from the listings and the many "no longer available"s I fear this heartfelt and spiritual work will disappear from sight sometime soon, probably for a long time. If intrigued, grab this one; the value is incredible. I loved the piece so much I also picked up the Jordan on WEA--not as spectacular an interpretation, and not as amazing soloists, but the finer engineering brings out a lot of the sensual beauty of the piece. I'm happy with both and will part with neither.
A tremendous recording.......2004-10-22
