Revolutionary.......2005-05-06
It is quite difficult to define what this album represents, it shows definitely an evolution, and even though the lyrics' formula is basically the same as in the first album (topics regarding the Mexican culture that go from being for a while in the subway of Mexico city to the old customs of the `Tlatoanis') what made this album so compelling was the wide variety of musical styles that the band decided to include for this work.
During this album we could see where the band was going, Emmanuel started to sing (a pretty cool slam song entitled `El borrego'), the vocalist started to change names (he was known as `Cosme' for this album) and the musical direction they took was vast.
`La ingrata' is nothing but a traditional Mexican song about relationships the Mexican way, `El ciclon' is a song reminiscent of the old progressive rock bands, `Esa noche' a very beautiful ballad about a love long lost.
The 20 tracks included in this album are just unbelievable, every song is different to the other and there is not a single musical style in which to catalogue this album. They attempted several styles and succeeded in all. I can guarantee you that this album will not disappoint but the opposite, everything in this album is just so well done, from the graphic design in the inside booklet to the contents of the cd.
This is a musical jewel that must be part of every music lover collection, regardless of the type of music you like, this album has 20 most enjoyable songs. This album was released in 1994 and I still remember me listening to it all the time in my walkman, a couple of years ago I found it on CD and didn't hesitate to buy it, more that 10 years have passed and this is an album through which years won't pass. A must for music collectors.

After a few weeks you take the disc out of your player and put it on a shelf, but the sounds will always be with you. Those sounds will always bring back the moments of your life when you first purchased Re. It's THAT good of an album.
So, I'm telling you now. Re is a good album, you should pick it up and give it a listen - and let a new season of your life begin.

Album Description
The most notorious Mexican alternative rock group, MTV Unplugged album recorded in 1995. Cafe Tacvba, was the first Latin rock group to ever record an MTV Unplugged series. The CD/DVD combo is in a 5.1 format. This collectible edition includes a bonus track entitled "Una Manana", not included in the original programmed version, and behind the scenes plus footage of this historical event. These releases were produced by Gustavo Santaolalla and Alejandro Pels.Customer Reviews:

The CD
The band was in what I personally think his best moment, the moment in which they transitioned and started to experiment with new sounds and music for their second album. This unplugged opens with the very first two tracks from `Re', `El aparato' and `La ingrata' in acoustic versions that resemble the originals. The good stuff starts in track 3 with the acoustic version of `El metro', Emmanuel is just unbelievable playing the piano in this one, Quique Rangel on the bass gives to this version a unique sound.
The band's producer, Gustavo Santaolalla makes a special appearance as a guest in a couple of songs, `Esa noche' and `El baile y el salon', being the latest the best song from the album, the arrangement they made with the violin (Luis Antonio Franco) gives this song the sense of loneliness the lyrics talk about.
Also, an historical moment for the band is here, the first time they sang `Las flores' with the guapango arrangement Alejandro Flores did, Cosme and Alejandro battling over the lyrics for the first time ever on a live performance are unbelievable and resembling of the old Mexican movies in which Pedro Infante did the same with his co-protagonists.
This edition also includes `Una mañana' (originally sung by Jose Jose), way before recording their studio version for the CD tribute to Jose Jose, this version was not aired when the unplugged came out for the first time, so finally having the unplugged on DVD and having an extra song never released before make this item even more collectible for a fan of the band.
The mixing sound of the album is pretty good, all the instruments sound clear and no aging can be perceived on the recording (considering this was recorded almost 10 years ago)
The DVD
This is basically the video version of the audio CD, but more complete, there are some dialogues between songs here that are not present on the CD. Seeing Cosme showing off his breasts is definitely one of the funniest things of this DVD.
No more extras than the announced documentary can be found on the DVD. The unplugged by itself is enough reason to buy it as the piece of history this document represents for Mexican rock and roll. The documentary shows a little `behind the scenes' and rehearsal from 10 years ago and then takes you to present day to Café Tacvba's recording studio were they host a reunion with the musicians involved in the unplugged in 1996. it is fun to see them all together telling anecdotes as they watch the unplugged together, the only person not present in the reunion is Santaolalla, who makes a `special' appearance at the end that was completely unnecessary and could have not been there.
The image quality is not so good overall; but on the other hand, the 5.1 mixing sound is superb (stereo option is obviously included).
Both items are sold separately and on a special edition that included CD+DVD, I definitely recommend the latter, the price difference is not that large and both discs are worth having better together. The design and presentation of the album is also very interesting.

This is Cafe Tacuba's first album and the one that put them on the map, and not just in "rock en español" circles. Straight out of the gate they show as much allegiance to the mosh pit as to their Mexican roots, but it is the clever blending of the two that gives them such appeal on both sides of the border. Sometimes irreverent and humorous, this five-piece outfit comes on at times like Madness in sombreros, while at other times they tackle ballads, norteños, and straight pop ditties. Underlying it all is a cultural edge and awareness in their music that demands serious attention, albeit not at the expense of having a really good time. In the process, Cafe Tacuba carve out a diverting and singular territory all their own. --Derek RathCustomer Reviews:
A promising band.......2005-05-06
This debut album with a variety of themes in the lyrics and with a very `mexican' style in its music, showed what seemed to be a very promising band. The vocal style that Sizu Yantra has (that's the most recent name that the vocalist has adopted, another peculiarity about the band) is quite different to what you expect from a vocalist, in time you get used to it and you actually get to like it, his style has evolved and improved ever since. `Las batallas' and `Maria' are a couple of ballads in which you can easily see the richness of their music and lyrics, and, on the other hand, we have `Las persianas' and `Rarotonga', two songs that are totally different in style and ideas, ideas that were fresh then and still are today (the `Rarotonga' video was definitely a keeper)
Even though the songs mentioned above were the singles released, my favorite tracks are the less known songs, `El catrin', `Labios jaguar' and `La zonaja' are songs in which you enjoy the music, but not as much as the lyrics, and this is mostly because Café Tacvba talks about the Mexican culture in their albums, in `El catrin' we hear the story of a guy that seems to have gotten out from a lottery card, `Labios jaguar' deals with a guy involved in relationship with a French type girl while he analyzes the advantages of being with a `trajin princesa' instead.
Bottomline, a very interesting proposal and a very enjoyable album to listen to, regardless of the other albums they have released ever since, `Café Tacvba' remains as one of my personal favorites, fresh ideas and a different proposal in this album made of Café Tacvba what they are today: one of the greatest Latin-American rock bands.

A quite enjoyable surprise.......2005-05-06
I am not sure but I believe that for this album the vocalist changed his name to `Anonimo', the album includes covers from Flans (an 80's pop band), Botellita de Jerez (another mexican rock band) and Leo Dan among others. It has only 8 tracks, but the eight of them are quite enjoyable.
Even though the songs were not new, what I never considered was that they changed the original music to the Café Tacvba style, which is totally unpredictable. Their version of `Chilanga Banda' made me buy this album, very different from the original, you basically know is the same song because of the title and the lyrics, everything else is totally café Tacvba. Their rendition of `No controles' was another pleasant surprise, especially when I never liked Flans, there's also an instrumental version of `Perfidia' which is one of my favorites, but the song that is really worth of mentioning is `Ojala que llueva café' (original by Juan Luis Guerra), the arrangement they made I promise you no one saw it coming, the last part of the song is now a classic thing an cheered in every concert they give.
If you can buy the special edition they released I would recommend it, it is a carton paper case with a very interesting work of design (as most of their albums)
Maybe not their best album, but a very rare and interesting piece of music that should be a guide to other bands on how to do a cover song, the only thing you need to do is adapt it to your style to make it different from the original and unique, and that's what Café Tacvba did in this album.
"No Manches Dice La Changa".......2005-04-24
Cool covers.......2002-02-27
If you are sick of the normal "alternative rock" bands on the north american scene, then definitly check out groups like cafe tacuba whom are putting out some refreshing, original work.

Latin Rhytnm and Flavor...French Style.......2000-10-19
Well, in France, Latin music has been popular for many, many years. Unlike audiences in the English-speaking world, the French have admired Latin music for many reasons. Linguistic similarities, exoticism, and most importantly rhythm gave Latino artists a major audience that could enjoy their sounds.
Compiled by Paris' "Latina Cafe" (which is on the Champs-Elysees), Wagram Records, and Radio Latina 99FM, "Latina Cafe" is an excellent exploration of Latin music on two compact discs. The first disc, which explores the classics of Latin music features such stars as Hector LaVoe, Gilberto Gil, Fulanito, Oscar D'Leon and many more others who lend their talents on this compilation. In my opinion, the highlights of this disc have to be La Lupe's version of the Peggy Lee classic "Fever," which she sings in a heavy Spanish accent. Singing in both English and Spanish, La Lupe was one of Latin music's greatest divas, and her devout gay following have made her an icon due to her ability to use flamboyance and sing with earthly passion and soul. Celia Cruz's "La Vida es Un Carnaval" is the ultimate song that showcases Celia's amazing vocals and passion whenever she sings. If this song that doesn't get you up and moving, then there is something terribly wrong with you.
Disc Two explores Spanish & Portuguese music heavily influenced by new age electronica. Unlike today's electronica, the music on this disc is done so to capture the rhythm of the song and not to send you on a trance. Songs like "Maracatu Atomico" by Zuco 103 and "Samba" by Faze Action will send you into a dreamworld where everything Brazilian surrounds your soul. On the Spanish-language side, "Cada Vez" by Negrocan and "Pienso en Ti" will do the same, only with a much more tropical feeling.
Disc one has over 68 minutes of music, while disc two has 78 minutes. Since it is imported from France, the packaging along with booklet is written in French. However, this shouldn't rule your purchase of this great compilation out. Try "Latina Cafe" for an excellent and sensational listening experience. When I first heard it playing at a store in Manhattan, it captured me entirely. Listen to it, and it will do the same to you as well.

Café Quijano wrote the lyrics for and sang Disney's Lilo & Stitch main song for the Spanish doubling, called "Ardiente Amor" ("Burning Love").
In 2004 they composed Spanish National Football Team song for that year's Eurocup, called "Sírvame una Copita" (Pour me a drink).
They were among the artists selected by Armando Manzanero to make his record "Duetos" (Duets), in which they sing "Esperaré" ("I'll Wait"). Outstanding Cuban musician Pancho Amat collaborated in their first disc, Olga Tañon sings with them in "La Taberna del Buda" and in their last production they sing with Joaquín Sabina and Celine Dion.
