5 out of 5 stars SPACE AGE BACHELOR PAD!.......2007-01-12

if you can imagine that, you can hear it in this music. everything which is exactly inverse musically of the 90's and 00's goth and emo kids is vociferated with Juan Garcia Esquivel. Yes, it is OK to be happy. Yes it is ok to have jazz guitar and flute, and what i even think is a harpsichord on one of the tracks!
Not gonna get into technical stuff. Just listen and enjoy.
WOW.
Now where did i put that jet pack?

3 out of 5 stars Overall Too Campy But Some Worthwile Lounge .......2005-06-09

Esquivel was a lounge pianist during the heyday of lounge (late 50s through 60s) whose songs are really over-the-top everything-but-the-kitchen-sink extravaganzas, entertaining but often too campy for my tastes. Most of the songs have a Latin flavor. I think about half the songs are worthwile for anyone who likes the retro lounge pop, including "El Cable", "Malaguena", "Estrellita", "Limehouse Blues", "April In Portugal", "Take the A Train", "It Had To Be You", "Yeyo", and "Flower Girl From Bordeaux".

4 out of 5 stars a nice place to get to know Esquivel.......2002-01-18

RCA gives you a sampling of all of Juan's domestic recordings here and the sound is on par with the import Esquivel CD releases. But be warned, once you hear Juan you are going to want to buy the entire collection!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta have it..........1999-09-26

My partner and I love to have a late afternoon cocktail, put in our Esquivel, and sit back and enjoy. That's REALLY what this album is ALL about.. Cheers, dears!

3 out of 5 stars 50's film retro.......1999-05-10

Listening to this album takes me back to the 50's. It's like being in a time warp! I like the way it was able to capture the sounds of things familiar, when things were simpler and music was full of everyday emotions.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but could have been better........2006-10-31

I LOVE Sin Bandera. What I love about them is the smooth, creamy way their two voices swirl through R&B harmonies with beautiful Spanish lyrics. However, this CD, Manana, let me down a little. The second thing I loved about Sin Bandera WAS the purity of their music. No profanity, no filth. No nasty, explicit songs I (as a Christian) feel the need to skip over on the CD. This CD has 2 such songs. WHY?! I know reggaeton is the most popular thing going right now, but Sin Bandera was doing fabulously with at least 2 hugely successful, clean albums. Why did you have to take your music into the gutter, guys? The rest of Manana is nice. I love the duet with Brian McKnight, and even the 2 versions of Junto a Ti (although they are sanitized reggaeton) are a nice change of pace. Sin Bandera if you are reading this, don't sell out your fan base trying to fit in with the "cool kids". Stick to what you do best, and you can have the best of both worlds.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music that permeates your heart and soul............2006-07-27

This album is one of the latest and greatest in my Latin music collection. Leonel Garcis and Noel Schajris have a gorgeous, lyrical quality to their harmonies, and their fusion of r&b, hip hop and Latin elements will have you hooked. Some of my favorite cuts on the album include "Que Me Alcance La Vida" (a stunning ballad!), "No Voy" (a more uptempo song with a beat reminscent of old school Michael Jackson), and "Junto a Ti" (a hip hop inspired beat with Puerto Rican rapper, Vico C).

This album is a great introduction to this marvelous musical duo. They have a romanticism that is very rare in today's music scene, and are definitely worthy of MUCH more exposure in the United States. I hope this album brings them a Grammy (and not just a Latin one!!!). I look forward to hearing much more from these guys in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Decent effort.......2006-05-05

This to me was Sin Bandera at their best and at their worst. I recognize that this band has a heavy R&B influence. I like that. It's really nice and they have the voices to carry it. However, there were four songs on this CD, two with Yung Kuntry and the two versions of Junto a Ti that I did not like. There was too much hip/hop and rap mixed in with it. It kind of reminded me of when I first stopped liking everything Gwen Stefani did just because it was Gwen S.
I'm all for an artist experimenting-- that's what makes them artists. However, tastes do differ and I just don't have a taste for rap infused spanish pop. Other than those songs I mentioned, there's the duet with Laura Pausini that is amazing. Suelta mi Mano, Tocame and Que Me Alcance la Vida are vintage Sin Bandera.

4 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Album..........2006-02-21

Ive been a Sin Bandera fan since day one, and they have delivered once again. If you like Sin Bandera because of their gorgeous heartfelt ballads, then this album is a winner. "Tocame" is one of the most beautiful songs Ive heard in a long time, and the others are not far behind. The duet with Brian McKnight was surprisingly good as well, not a bad crossover song. Im not so much a fan of the more edgy/hip hop songs that Sin Bandera tries on this album. Theryre ok, and not bad by any means, ( I actually dont mind "Lo Que Llamas Amor"), but they should stick to what they know best- writing beautifully harmonized and lyrically eloquent ballads. Overall, this album is amaaaazing, and I havent taken it off repeat since I bought it!
There is also a nice live version of "Sirena" (not available on this version of the album, but is available on iTunes) which i recommend downloading. If only I could see them live....

5 out of 5 stars Hecka good CD.......2005-12-21

THis is the first Sin Bandera CD that I like all of the songs. In the "De Viaje" CD, there were like three or four songs that I really didn't like.

5 out of 5 stars Editorial Review.......2006-11-06

"The shadowy, sunrise-laden cover of the flamenco guitar/gypsy violin duo's ninth disc reflects the playful spirit of the personalities behind one of world music's most original phenomenons of the last decade. There's always a lightheartedness in their songs, reflective of the Mexican surf region where their partnership began. Yet when it comes to blending traditional elements with modern percussive sensibilities, and showing the rhythmic possibilities of the violin, the tandem is not only serious, but innovative. Manana is one of their most diverse discs, inspired by the experiences they've had playing their gypsy joy for audiences all around the world. Thus, there's the lazy days on Mexican and Hawaiian beaches, seductive dances in the hills of Scaromonte, even an exquisitely exotic Arabian caravan (the mystical, almost experimental closing track 'Caravan of Camels'). John Leftwich's production adds some well-placed electronic percussion amidst the more natural soundscaping on tracks like the swaying title tune, and there are some cool electric guitar enhancements. 'El Desperado,' a song written in the 17th Century Mexican village of San Miguel de Allende (a place near and dear to the duo's heart), mixes a dusty, steel string enhanced Western atmosphere with a mix of electronica and sparse live percussion. Combining all that with a touch of the blues, 'La Bolita' is in this vein, but more exotic and romantic. Though this is one of their more intricately produced projects, the simple charming duality that defines Willie & Lobo's charm comes across on more organic tracks like 'Fuegando,' a powerful polyrhythmic showcase of what they can accomplish when stripped down. Manana couldn't have gotten here too soon. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide"

interesting new album.
i really like this guys in concert, see them if they come to your town.

5 out of 5 stars More quality music........2003-08-01

The duo are back and living up to the same quality as previous albums, if you want any instrumental albums with a latin flare to it then i would recommened anything by Willie and lobo manana lives up to the previous releases (even live and siete) and has a slight subtle change to it though i havent quite sussed out what it is yet. The instuments that these guys play always appear to be really tight and well managed which leaves an amazing sound with the plucky guitars and all over the place fiddle this albums bound to satisfy, right?

5 out of 5 stars This CD will make you believe in music.......2005-02-04

I picked up this CD on a whim in the early 90's as a last minute purchase added to other CDs I was buying. I've been a fan since the early 80's & they never cease to amaze me. Although this is now an older CD I believe it is one of the King's Singers best. I'd put it right up there with Madrigal History Tour & Good Vibrations. This saucy sextet delivers the goods time & time again with perfect diction, phrasing & pitch. Take a listen & just lose yourself in the harmonys, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best thing the King's singers have performed.......1999-08-16

I can have many chances to meet Albums the king's singers have performed. This 'Believe in Music' is not one of their best albums, but THE BEST of all their albums. I dont need to explain about this album with long and boring words. Just say "The Best"!.

3 out of 5 stars Jobim meets Fennesz!.......2006-06-06

Not alltogether satisfying, this experimental latin tinged electronic does have it's moments. The majority of this brief disc does cater to the the sound warping techniques used throughout the microbeat laptop scene, normally favoring more textural voice and noise varieties rather then blatant Prefuse- like beats. The short length makes the meat and potatoes of this disc, which feature some breezy melodies and vocals, ambient production, coupled with that backbone of Herren's usual drive, really fade from the mostly atmospheric experimentation found throughout. While pursuing this interesting territory in the future, I feel Savath would be served best by cutting the ironic and jarring tones they use to contrast their melodic folk to a minimum and instead focus on involving the listener moreso into their aural quest of bridging past and future.

5 out of 5 stars This album is a mystical masterpiece and demonstrates the diversity of the troupe LA NEF!!!!.......2007-02-11

I have 4 of their albums, including "The Garden of Earthly Delights". I found this album to be more "mystically enchanting" than their other works. Typically, the album is presented as a themed play sung or played in about 17 acted scenes or "tracks". THE GARDEN* however, is more instrumental than say "Music for Joan the Mad", and, definately more mystical than "Le Monsignor".

I HIGHLY recommend you collect ALL OF LA NEF'S WORKS. This album is unique and isn't comparative to any of La Nef's other work. It stands out soley from all the rest and your collection wouldn't be complete without it. Although I prefer "Joan the Mad" and "The Quest for the Holy Grail" over this album (soley because I love the storylines), I'm very satisfied with my collection and happy I bought it.

My testimony of this troupe is -- BUY EVERYTHING THEY PRODUCE...THEY'RE THAT GOOD! Each album is a book. Each scene or "track" is creative, entertaining and thoroughly nourishing to the soul. If you haven't gone Mideval....JUST LISTEN TO THIS.

5 out of 5 stars a journey into the lightness of dark.......2003-11-25

This album offers an eclectic display of medieval music. We get pieces from the Cathar, French, Spanish, Andalusian &Sephardic traditions - yet the tunes blend easily - just like the bizarre beings in the famous triptych by H. Bosch melt into a fascinating whole. The Bosch painting is intensely personal, as each viewer picks out the details, patterns and configurations that speak to her.... and the same is true with this collection of 14th & 15th century music presented by La Nef, the sextet founded in 1991 by Sylvain Bergeron. the pieces are all played with medieval instruments (including lute, oud, the vielle, psaltery and santur); La Nef adapted a few pieces to address modern sensibilities, yet the adaptations ring true to me; perhaps this is what the Cathars really wanted?! I have listened to this CD many times and will listen to it again. And again. Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Bravissimo.......2002-09-17

The Katona brothers have enriched the recordings of classical guitar yet again with their outstanding performance of Rodrigo's "Concerto Madrigal" for two guitars. This CD possesses, frankly put, the most definitive and enjoyable rendition of Rodrigo's beautiful but underplayed double guitar concerto yet recorded. The Concerto Madrigal has been recorded by eminent guitarists in the past, including Williams/Bream and the talented Romeros, but never with so much passion, precision, and pure virtuosity- (which is likely one significant reason why this gorgeous work has been so underappreciated and underheard in the classical music world). The speed, technical prowess, and sheer musicality which the Katonas display in their performance is simply breathtaking- and finally do justice to a piece which should be more widely recognised as one of Rodrigo's great guitar works. Quick passages such as the "fandango" evoke the fire and passion of the Spanish bullfighter in the heat of the ring, while the slower movements such as the "Pastorcico" and the "Pastoral" are played with a quiet and gentleness which bring out all the delicate beauty, romance, and serenity that might accompany a slow afternoon stroll in the beautiful Alhambra gardens. To top it all off, the Katonas perform their own skilful transcriptions of lesser known Rodrigo pieces, as the heartstopping "Tonadilla," on their latest album. This CD has apparently already earned a well-deserved Gramophone "Top 10 CDs of the Month" award, and will one day become a legendary recording in the annals of guitar history, I have little doubt. Bravissimo, Katona brothers, for this wonderful CD. Truly great classical guitar players are still an unfortunate rarity, and it is only a shame that Rodrigo himself did not live long enough to hear the amazing Katonas play his fantastic "Concerto Madrigal" with the virtuostic brilliance, colour, and passion it truly deserves. Almost needless to say, for classical guitar and music lovers (especially those who love Spanish music), this CD is a definite "buy."

    3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2002-03-12

A Grammophone reviewer gave this album a rave review. I don't ordinarily agree with Gram. -- a reviewer was somewhat negative, for instance, on a Clara Schumann boxed set that I bought anyhow on the chance that it might be fine, since there was no other Clara Schumann available at the time. I thought the boxed set was wonderful. Here, I have to also disagree. Although this CD is okay -- the music is played competently -- it misses something important. From what the Gram. reviewer said, this is a unique experience to hear the Katona twins play in that special harmony you find in twins. I haven't heard that and so must listen to the CD more to detect any special harmonies. What I heard was a rather stiff performance, backed up by an orchestration that neither overwhelmed nor really coordinated with the soloists. The performance here is worth listening to, but on the other hand, it clearly lacks the charm, spirit and intimacy of the Romeros. Can't say that I'd recommend this album.
