5 out of 5 stars This CD is special.......2006-05-09

I absolutely love this CD. I first heard the music when a friend of mine played the (then) album just after we both returned from Spain on foreign study in the '70s. The words of Machado said so much to me about what I had seen and learned about Spain, and the music by Serrat couldn't be more appropriate. I managed to buy the album a number of years later on a trip to Mexico and then bought the CD many more years later when it was available from Amazon. In my mind, it's timeless. If you have a sense of the history of Spain and the Spanish people, you will love this music. My personal favorite is La Saeta.

5 out of 5 stars cd quality.......2003-11-20

I was heartbroken to find that the quality of the recording is this bad... lots of hissing and noise that could be easily removed with modern technology. It just goes to show that music companies like BMG prefer to put resources on junk than to pay attention to what people really buy, because even with the bad quality, Serrat's work shines. Joan Manuel, if you are reading this, get rid of BMG, go somewhere else. You are too good for that mafia.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......2000-12-23

5 out of 5 stars Poetry and music.......2000-08-25

Antonio Machado was one of Spain's 20th century's best poets. Raised in Andalucía, his poetry has become national common culture and this album greatly contributed to that. Serrat, himself a notable poet as well as the most important songwriter of Spain for the past thirty five years, wrote excellent music for a handful of Machado's poems. The result is incredibly beautiful, with an match between tempo and meaning so outstanding that for the not-so-well-read it might be difficult to digest the news that it was not Serrat's lyrics...

5 out of 5 stars Poetas necesarios.......2000-07-24

5 out of 5 stars Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08

Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Il Postino (Le postier).......2007-02-01

Excellent album. En plus de la musique originale du film, plusieurs lectures de poëmes de Pablo Neruda par des acteurs et actrices de renom, sur fond musical.

5 out of 5 stars True Romantic Cd - www.michaelpalmer.net.......2006-12-18

If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.

4 out of 5 stars lovely!.......2006-09-07

The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT DID THEY DO?!.......2006-04-01

What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best Granados piano recording we have.......2000-09-17

I encountered this recording, that dates from the early sixties, for the first time on a Musical Heritage Society double LP that one commentator had remarked "sounded like Hispavox recorded it off a public address system". Even so, these wonderful recordings communicated the essence of Granados' inspiration in perfumed and ecstatic performance by Ms. De Larrocha. Now we have this excellent CD transfer that puts everything right sonically and lets us enjoy the music undistracted. Since this recording was not the artist's last word on the subject, why not buy her later performance? The reason is that this is the ne plus ultra of Granados recordings- the summit of achievement that will become one of your all-time favorite piano records.

4 out of 5 stars Ravishing..........1999-05-26

Gorgeously played, sumptuously written. Nobody can play this music like Alicia de Larrocha. Recording noise notwithstanding, it's still fabulous and I'm buying my second copy.

5 out of 5 stars Recuerdos a Granel.......2006-11-10

Wow, the memories! This is a set of Blades' classics. The remastered format is high fidelity. Although I have the vinyls, nothing beats the improved studio surround sound this edition provides. This is a must-have for the bohemian set. Blades raison d'etre pores thru from the opening Juan Pachanga to the afro-cuban Canto Abacula which rounds up this set. Wepa! Que viva la salsa clasica, hermano.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD !!!!!.......2006-08-02

This is a great cd for those who may not have much of his music. This cd has songs of his that you may need to find in a lot of other cd's. Together these songs show you a bit of the best he's done.

5 out of 5 stars Vicente Amigo .......2005-11-17

Vicente Amigo is the most technically accomplished guitarist I have ever heard. Whilst purists of flamenco may find some of his work a little too jazz influenced, his solo pieces are truly astounding and some of the orchestrated pieces take your breath away with their beauty esp 'Poeta En El Puerto'. He is a gifted and worthy successor to Paco de Lucia.

5 out of 5 stars Vicente Amigo at his best.......2005-05-23

Technically marvelous, Amigo has a darker, more haunting sound than Paco DeLucia. Brower's arrangements have made his playing brighter on this recording, but don't get me wrong - there is nothing wrong with Amigo's sound on his other albums. If you don't know of him, check him out. If you love flamenco guitar you will not be disappointed. You must hear "City of Ideas" as well.

        4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guitar Concerto.......2004-05-10

Honestly, I wish reviewers like Artin Karapet would keep their worthless blanket BS statements to themselves. Oscar de Lucia is (was) a very talented guitarist (listen to Fuerte Y Caudal - exquisite), but not based on Luzia alone. If you love him that much, please don't waste review time trashing other artists who are just a talented, and maybe even more so. Have you listened to Geraldo Nunez? Your might change your mind.
Poeta is a lovely cd, worthy of repeated listenings. Though I prefer Vicente's solo work, this it truly a fine album in the vein of Concerto de Aranguez. The other reviewers - the SANE ones - are right on the money.

1 out of 5 stars Paco De Lucia is better.......2004-01-29

Paco de Lucia is better than every body else in the world. He is the best and he will always be the best, no one will ever replace him......

        5 out of 5 stars A Flamenco Concerto!.......2003-05-28

I ordered this CD because I liked Vicente's previous flamenco music. But I was suprised when I listened to it. It was a flamenco concerto with the most wonderful orchestration by Leo Brouwer. But not a concerto in the traditional sense. I have always associated Leo with Avant Garde music, but here he has produced some very beautiful classical music. Contrast this with Vicente's superb Flamenco playing and feeling (duende) and you have a refreshingly different experience. It took me a number of listenings to fully appreciate the depth and beauty of this CD. Vicente also allows the orchestra plenty of time and space to set the mood and does at times have the guitar simply move along with it. In other words, he does not allow the guitar to claim the limelight all the time. This is a nice touch.
In addition to the guitar and orchestra, the CD contains some poetical recitations and some flamenco singing, both in Spanish, but these occupy a small portion of the music. The CD liner notes are in Spanish so I cannot understand what Vicente has written about this CD, which is a shame.
There is an expanded and orchestrated version of his alegrias "Maestro Sanlucar" from his first (and in my opinion best) CD "De Mi Corazon Al Aire".

The quality of the recording is superb. It brings out the full richness and beauty of Brouwer's orchestration. I was also concerned that the flamenco guitar with its lighter construction and sound (compared to the classical guitar) would be unable to match this depth, but this is not the case. There is a good balance between guitar and orchestra.

While it's tempting to call acclaimed diva Denyce Graves's exploration of Latin classical influences a crossover project, that label's pop lightweight connotations don't do justice to the powerful, often uncompromising performances contained herein. Indeed, Graves leans heavily on her collaborators (who include contemporary composers-arrangers-pianists Chucho Valdes, Eliane Elias, and Jose Maria Vitier, as well as arranger-pianist Pablo Ziegler) for both material and stylistic inspiration, creating a collection that's more concerned with true musical synthesis than it is with commercial exploitation. Even the works of Latin classical standard-bearers like Argentina's Carlos Guastavino, Brazil's Villa-Lobos, and Tango master Astor Piazzolla are cast in stark, contemporary arrangements that underscore both Graves's dramatic mezzo voice and the dusky, rhythmically charged dynamics of her quartet of confederates. Cuban great Valdes composed "Romanza de Denyce" especially for the project, further blurring the collection's boundaries between jazz, classical, and pop. If the listener is only familiar with the better-known Latin classical repertoire, this collection may open up some inviting new horizons. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Sensual, Spellbounding, and sheerly Sexy!!!.......2006-07-10

Denyce's warm and sensual Mezzo voice is truly spectacular when she sings the right rep. This latin album is literally right up her lane. She brings a dark color to the pieces that accentuates the text and the instrumentation. The singing is remarkably beautiful and the musicians play with an entrancing groove that makes you feel warm all over. I recommend just listening to this album while sitting outside in a park on a warm and sunny day. I believe that you will see the world completely differently. Way to go Denyce!!!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, bewitching: a real must have.......2003-11-27

This record is exquisite in all its elements: the Voice of Graves -voice with a capital V!-, the selections, the arrangements! For me it would take hours to try to decipher its mystery of seduction. A real must for those who love poetry, music and the marriage of both. A real must for lovers of Latin American music. A real must for the senses.
The first time I listened to the cd, it gave a jolt.
A lot has been said about Graves. She's a wonderful mezzo, with that rich black timbre in her low notes and her lovely lyric high ones. And never mind the language, she knows how to create magic around her.
However, although she's supposed to be the main attraction here, to me the composers steal the show from her.
I've been listening to good music, from opera to streetside, for decades now. And I had never heard anything like Plancha or Plomada, by Guastavino. They're simply astounding.
The Cubans come out very well. Their songs are simply irressistible. They own the gift of melody and harmony. Soledad is unforgettable.
But what haunts me the most is Milonga sin palabras. What a piece of art!

4 out of 5 stars Una voz opulenta.......2003-01-31
