Argentinean popsters Soda Stereo, recorded live at MTV Studios in Miami, are not exactly acoustic as one might suppose from the title, but do project a light touch--somewhere between contemporary and alternative rock genres. There is little audience participation between the eleven songs that feature some psychedelic electronic swirls, cellos, and violas alongside standard rock guitars, as Soda Stereo move through a somewhat limited repertoire. This is an "interactive" CD, with additional content designed to be played both on regular CD players and computer CD-ROM drives, but it proves difficult to get the audio-only tracks on a Mac, and a lot of the footage and graphics are either inconsequential or irrelevant. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars Mucho mejor que excelente.......2006-06-29

5 out of 5 stars A Live Spanish Language Pop, Rock & Jazz Musical Masterpiece !.......2005-08-08

This MTV unplugged album represents musical masterpiece from one of the best Spanish language rock groups of the past twenty years. The Argentinian based rock group Soda Stereo's music is rhythmic, jazzy, hauntingly beautiful, and ultimately different than most of what we hear on the English language pop/rock/jazz stations. This particular live album is one of the better live rock albums I have ever heard. The combination of acoustic and electric guitars along with many other instruments, sounds, and special effects provide an exotic musical landscape of jazz and rock tunes that will haunt your musical imagination forever. I was introduced to this band's music years ago while in Mexico when I entered my Spanish pop/rock music phase. I have listened to so many thousands of songs and groups in my lifetime including all genres from classic rock, progressive rock, pop, new wave, new age, R&B, classical orchestral, renaissance, Irish folk, hard rock, heavy metal, Spanish pop/rock/jazz, rap (yes even rap), hip-hop, club dance, etc. etc. etc. I have heard and listened to it all. You might be familiar with Spanish language rock groups such as Mana. This music is similar but this group is more jazzy, more experimental, and more raw. I had collected at least thirty Spanish language pop/rock albums during the late 1990s and this was one of my favorites. The songs on this album and the performances are absolutely incredible and they transcend language and time the way many great English language rock albums by groups such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Pink Floyd have through the years. From the echoing electric jazz guitar of the opening song "En la Ciudad de La Furia", to the Latin pop rhythm and beat of "Entre Canibales", and the progressive and Pink Floyd-ish "Sonoman" and "Planeador" I promise you that this rock album is unlike anything you have ever experienced. Unfortunately after leaving a two decade legacy of unforgettable and timeless Spanish rock based musical work Soda Stereo's members disbanded in 1997. If you are a musical enthusiast who is not afraid to venture out and explore listening to many different kinds of music and you enjoy progressive rock and jazz then this album by Soda Stereo is an absolute must have since it represents some of the most amazing music I have ever heard coming from one of the best and most influential Spanish language rock groups of the 1980s and 1990s.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant........2005-05-04

Superb stuff! A great selection of Soda Stereo songs, not even remotely unplugged and who would want it to be?? Ciudad de la furia is incredible and its worth buying for this version alone.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2004-12-09

2 months ago I was doing my chores late at night while listening to MTV en Espanol. I was bored and about to turn of the T.V until i heard the Incredible Unplugged version of "Entre Canibales" by soda stereo (a group that was unknown to me at the time)after being completely captivated by the song I then decided to by the album and quite frankly i was blown away by the incredible first seven unplugged songs, Here it the list

1. La ciudad de la furia- Beautiful! I would have paid the full 15 dollars for this song alone Absolutely brilliant! I really dig Andrea Echevarry's voice

2. Un Misil En mi placard- Excellent acoustic song, Incredibly pleasing to the ears.

3. Pasos- I love how Soda Stereo worked this song with a blend of the acoustic guitar and violins.

4. Entre Canibales- Song that started my craze for this wonderful group.

5. Te Para Tres- Lovely song, love the electric guitar near the end.

6. Angel Electrico- Great song I love How Gustavo Cerati ( Lead Singer) shows his passion for the electric guitar in this song, him and Zeta (Bassist) did a good job.

7. Ella uso mi cabeza como un revolver: Great song, I get fired up everytime I hear it!

GREAT UNPLUGGED: DEFINATELY PARA VOLAR!!!

4 out of 5 stars Soda Stereo Semi - acustico.......2004-12-09

5 out of 5 stars If you only purchase one Soda Stereo CD..........2007-02-28

...you'd be doing yourself a tremendous disservice, but that's beside the point. Of their entire output, this is the disc with which to start.

Then again, I'm biased. I bought the CD when it first came out, and it was the first CD of theirs I owned. I don't think I listened to much else for about a month after that, and it's still in heavy rotation ten years later.

In the other reviews, you'll see comparisons to a number of other bands that influenced Soda Stereo, and whose sounds echo faintly here. But this isn't just imitation; the band have made their influences their own to a degree that you have to listen hard sometimes to pick them up. It's a fuller, more mature work than a lot of their earlier recordings (where the outside influences are much more pronounced).

That said, the one disc that I'd compare this to is Radiohead's "OK Computer," in terms of its complexity and originality. Where it differs, though, is in the outlook of the bands' respective front men, and how that effects the music. "Suen~o Stereo" doesn't have the icy, alienated detachment that informs so much of Radiohead's work. Everything about this--Gustavo Cerati's music and lyrics, as well as his playing and that of Charly Alberti and Zeta Bosio--is engaged, and engaging, from the driven "Ella Uso Mi Cabeza Como Un Revolver" (quite a mouthful for a non-Spanish speaker like me) and "Paseando Por Roma" to the Eno-esque atmospherics that dominate the disc's second half.

Forget for a minute that this is Rock En Espan~ol, and never mind if you don't speak Spanish. This is an album that transcends language, and transcends time: it sounds as fresh, and sometimes as startling, now as it did when it came out, and there aren't too many albums of which you can say that.

5 out of 5 stars Soda Stereo decided to leave with a bang!!.......2004-11-30

Once again this band has outdone itself. They broke up in 1997, but decided to leave us with this great album, Sueno Stereo. I always said that Soda Stereo was ahead of its time, and this album is evidence of that. Even 10 years after this recording, this album still sounds like it may been recorded yesterday because it sounds so fresh and modern, unlike anything you've heard before. I highly recommend everyone, whether you're a Soda fan or not, to purchase this album. You will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars No pasa de moda..........2004-11-17

5 out of 5 stars Soda en su maximo.......2004-06-13

5 out of 5 stars Exelente Sueño De Soda.......2004-05-24

5 out of 5 stars The Soda Masterpiece.......2007-06-02

I was introduced to SS by MTV, of all things. I remember loving the romanticism of Doble Vida, particularly "La Ciudad de la Furia", and later on Canción Animal's more streamlined, rock sound. "Me Sueles Dejarme Solo", with its Rush inspired chord progression (Working Man, anyone?) told me that these guys could rock. But nothing prepared me for the sonic burst of Dynamo. To say that I was floored is an understatement.

This is Soda's best album because it shows a band at the cusp of its abilities. The songwriting was excellent and the execution was flawless. They took their experimentation to a comfortable plateau and it served the songs, not the other way around. And they rocked.

There's nothing derivative here. Even the percussive guitar playing of the first songs, which recall The Edge's signature sound, or the lyrical bass lines of Primavera O which also suggest U2's influence, don't say anything other than this is a Soda record.

This is not for everybody, but if you're into sophisticated rock music (and this may require multiple hearings) get this album. Even if you don't understand the lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars soda is great.......2007-04-11

I love the early work of Soda Stereo, and I must say Dynamo is different. In my opinion you either love it, or hate it. In my case, I sure love it. I love the work Cerati is doing now, and I still love all of Soda. Listen to it w/ an open mind, and you will know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2006-12-30

"Dynamo" is one of the most underrated Spanish rock albums of all time. Gustavo Cerati took a more electonic approach to this LP, departing from the more traditional rock of "Cancion Animal".

"Dynamo" was produced far from Grunge madness, so the overall sound has more British influences. I've never heard a song like "Secuencia inicial", one would never guess when that song was produced. "Toma la ruta" also follows that example. "En remolinos" is a superbly excellent song. "Primavera 0" is fast and crazy, but not Grungy. Other great songs include "Luna roja", "Fue", and "Claroscuro".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent but... innovative?.......2006-08-28

This is an excellent and mature album, clearly the best this argentinian group ever made, and quite possibly one of the best ever in the annals of the history of rock....
But the signature sound of this album (the layered guitars) came 2 years after MBV's Loveless, which is considered by many as the most influential album of the 90's, and deservedly so. I am all for giving credit where it's due, though of course I cannot know if Cerati listened to MBV beforehand; songs like Ameba, En remolinos and Luna roja, could have perfectly fit into a Kevin Shields' album from the early 90's from a stylistic point of view; but certainly Cerati's prowess for arranging melodies is unmatched in any language.

5 out of 5 stars The best latin Rock and Roll disc Ever.......2005-06-13

Simply beautiful, you can listen to it in replay CD for hours... As the cd cover shows it's as loopable as you heart beating. ;) Way ahead for his time, Soda Stereo showed why they still are one of the best Rock and Roll bands in the world. If you liked U2's POP upbeating style, this is for you. Thanks God for the spinning. Gira el mundo. Gira Dios.

4 out of 5 stars Un Buen Comienzo.......2003-09-06

5 out of 5 stars Possibly Soda's best.......2006-08-23

For me, it's hard to decide between this disc and "Sueño Stereo" for Soda's all-around best effort. Right from the start on "Animal" we're treated to one of the best Cerati jams of all-time -- "En el Séptimo Día." It's a neat word play, too, for a song that is in a 7/4 time signature. "Un Millón de Años Luz" continues the musical joy, followed by the thrumming title track, and then the rockabilly-esque "1990." "De Música Ligera" and "Hombre al Agua" are just sensational with Cerati's guitar mixing perfectly with Zeta's booming bass. I prefer "Comfort y Música para Volar's" version of "Entre Canibales," and Aterciopelados' version of "Té Para 3" (on "Tributo a Soda Stereo") but the original versions here are certainly pleasing unto themselves.

If you don't own this Soda disc, you don't know what Soda you're missing.

5 out of 5 stars Remasterizado?.......2005-12-12

¿Alguien me podría informar?

5 out of 5 stars The best Soda Album.......2005-03-17

Soda Stereo is quite posibly the best Spanish Rock band that ever existed and this is, in my opinion, their best album. All songs but one made hit singles in my home country and they stayed in lists for over two years when combined. I even remember that at one time 6 of the 10 most played songs in radio stations came from this record. To this day, 12 years later, these songs play anywhere where there's people from Latin America and you see people singing along and jumping around. It is that good. One of those records that you always remember and cherish, not only for the music, which is exquisite, but for the great memories it brings back.

5 out of 5 stars Simplemente notable.......2004-12-08

5 out of 5 stars A true classic!!.......2004-06-03

This one true classic album from the undisputed kings rock in spanish, if you're not spanish please don't be fooled into thinking this sounds like Ricki martin or some other crap that's out there. Here is a song by song review:

1- En el séptimo día (9/10): awesome song, the guitar has a really strange kind of vibe, great chorus.

2- Un millon de años luz (10/10): one of my favorite soda songs. It has a really awesome intro, the song makes you feel as if you're flying or something, the guitar solo is really good.

3- Canción animal (10/10): great song, very misterious. It has probably one of the best lyrics i've ever heard (try to translate it if you are not apanish speaking).

4- 1990 (6/10): the only regular song of the album, i usually skip it.

5-Sueles dejarme solo (9/10): very simple song yet very effective.

6-De musica ligera (10/10): this is probably the most well known soda song. It a true classic in spanish speaking countries. The album was released in 1990 and to this day I still go out and hear the song (i live in venezuela). One of my favorites everytime i listen to it it reminds me of old girlfriends and my high school buddies.

7-Hombre al agua (10/10): one of their best and another classic song. It's a very moody song with kind of strange lyrics, the keyboards give the song an sort of airy ambience.

8- Entre canibales (10/10): very good song, a little more laid back than the rest, good lyrics.

9-Te para tres (9/10): I personally like this song very much, it really soft and hypnoticing, i actually prefer the unplugged versión, but this one is also good.

10- Cae el sol(9/10): great tune, very good choice to finish the album, it has sort of a happy feel to it, as if everything is going to be ok.

My recomendation is buy it (even if you don't speak spanish)

5 out of 5 stars A piece of musical heaven.......2005-02-17

(This review is for the set of 2 cds, A and B, that by all means should be considered toguether. Soda had to release 2 cd's for contractual reasons but we forgive them for this..)

Set yourself in Buanos Aires, at the packed River Plate stadium, August 1997. It is the last concert of what is without any doubt the greatest rock band to ever have come from latin-american soil. The unforgetable music of La Ciudad de la Furia, a song about the darker side of Buenos Aires itself, blares into the stadium and penetrates deep into the collective conciousness of the thousands of adoring fans. Now fast forward to the last song, De Musica Lijera, pure rock and roll bliss, fans screaming the lyrics like mad and amazing gutar riffs roaring for the last time. Everybody in the stadium knows that is to be the end of it. Soda Stereo is to be no more. They can put the sadness aside, in between these two moments all those present had been treated to an unadultaretad piece of music heaven. It is precisely that what this pair of cd's try to capture.

To overstate the importance of Soda Stereo to latin-american music is impossible. This band which fused elements of ska, new-wave, pure rock and others into music that was remarkably progressive for its time and place has influenced so many others that it effectively has placed itself at the top of the latin rock world. In the 80's they opened doors for what would later become a musical revival not seen in Argentina since the time of the tango. If you have not listened to their music yet, take some time to do it. Listen repeatedly to these cd's and pick up all of their subtlelties, for the music created by Soda is just plain great. Even if you do not understand a word of Spanish you will apreciate what you will be listening to.

Soda has always delivered better performances live than in the studio, feeding off the crowd's energy. The performances in these cd's are no exeption. Listen to classics like La ciudad de la furia, Persiana americana, Zoom, El temblor, Ella uso mi cabeza como un revolver, Cancion Animal, Musica lijera among others and understand what this band was all about.

It pains me to see some of the trash that inundated the american and world markets coming from latin-america and at the same time for there to be no difussion of some great music like the one Soda created. Some gems from latin-america are known worldwide such as Brazilian music, salsa, merengue and other colorful examples. It is time for the rocker side to be known too.

Sell all of your other music if you have to, but get these cd's.

5 out of 5 stars La despedida?.......2004-07-07

5 out of 5 stars Leyenda.......2003-01-29

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening from Latin America's Best Band.......2006-11-20

Spanning from 1983 to 1994, the tracks on this collection acutely illustrate how a band can grow and evolve. The earliest tracks are neurotic fun; imagine early Police songs fronted by a caffeinated David Byrne with some RHCP inflections on a predominantly fast-paced Two-Tone ska beat. All of the early tracks are uniformly superb and fun. As the 1980s wear on, touches of South America begin to be assimilated into the sound (listen to the Andean flutes on "Cuando Pase el Temblor"). Then, pop sensibilities shine on "Persiana Americana" and "Profugos," as both tracks are immediately catchy and have a lot of replay value.

Disc 2 begins with "En la Ciudad de la Furia," a track that boasts both atmospherics and funky guitar lines. It's a product of the 80s, and we love it for that. But tracks like "Picnic en el 4to. B" show the band tinkering with a sunnier production and janglier guitars (something hitherto unseen). As the disc wears on, we see the band stretching itself into unknown territories. Some tracks begin with piano-based moodyness and then plunge into disco histrionics. The tropical funk of Mundo de Quimeras boasts a more Carribbean flavour than the UK-ska of their early days. "De Musica Ligera" has got to be the most conventional rock track on the whole disc. The last portion of the discs descends into a semi-predictable state that is bereft of the spiky youthfulness on the first disc. But there are still surprises, like "No Necesito Verte (Para Saberlo)," which has an instrumentation that is essentially hip-hop.

As you can tell, I enjoyed disc 1 more than disc 2. It's pop value is easier to appreciate it, and the tracks stay embedded in your head for days. Disc 2 is where a great deal of the evolution takes place. Mid-tempo rockers, funk forays and random experiments all pepper this substancially less catchy disc.

Overall, however, I consider this set to be essential. The breadth that this band managed to tackle is completely impressive, and this document proves Soda Stereo's musical worth. Not only were they extensive in terms of incorporating things into their sound, but they did it with a finesse and skill that's totally unbeatable. Buy it now, and you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A must for ALL rock en espanol fans!.......2005-08-25

Soda Stereo is one of the best spanish rock acts ever, and this CD compiles all of their greatest hits. It's a must for all Spanish rock fans, and for all fans in need of an introduction to this amazing music genre. I also recommend their MTV unplugged and Dynamo.

5 out of 5 stars Un buen Adios.......2004-07-07

5 out of 5 stars Excelent.......2003-05-01

This is the best of the best of rock en español, there's not much to say about it, it's simply the best songs from the best rock band in spanish, these argentinians are really good, it's a must have for all rock en español fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best of Soda Stereo.......2007-02-10

Every album by Soda Stereo had something great, if not, a lot of things that were great. But you simply can't beat the energy and quality of this farewell tour. I highly recommend the video as well, which has a few songs not included in these two discs.

The stadium was packed tight, the fans swayed as a single organism and Soda rocked the house. If you don't speak Spanish, it's worth learning Spanish just to appreciate this incredible band. They drew on influences from various styles to create not just a single style, but a number of styles. They were (and Cerati, at least continues to be) true innovators. Cerati ranks with the guitar greats and the band as a whole ranks with the rock band greats of any culture or time.

    5 out of 5 stars Musical Heaven.......2005-02-17

(This review is for the set of 2 cds, A and B, that by all means should be considered toguether. Soda had to release 2 cd's for contractual reasons but we forgive them for this..)

Set yourself in Buanos Aires, at the packed River Plate stadium, August 1997. It is the last concert of what is without any doubt the greatest rock band to ever have come from latin-american soil. The unforgetable music of La Ciudad de la Furia, a song about the darker side of Buenos Aires itself, blares into the stadium and penetrates deep into the collective conciousness of the thousands of adoring fans. Now fast forward to the last song, De Musica Lijera, pure rock and roll bliss, fans screaming the lyrics like mad and amazing guitar riffs roaring for the last time. Everybody in the stadium knows that is to be the end of it. Soda Stereo is to be no more. They can put the sadness aside, in between these two moments all those present had been treated to an unadulterated piece of music heaven.

The performances in these cd's are not exeption. 5 out of 5 stars De sus mejores trabajos.......2003-06-09
