If you didn't get to know Chrisette Michele by way of Jay-Z (she was the one singing sparkling hooks on "Lost Ones") or Nas (she channeled Billie Holiday on "Can't Forget About You"), stop wasting valuable seconds. Though the hype on this pure-voiced, raunch-resistant songstress has her resuscitating a classic jazz sound that rarely infiltrates R&B--comparisons to Lady Day, Nina Simone, and Ella Fitzgerald are mounting--she's more her generation's answer to Erykah Badu: any notes she wraps her lips around come out fresh-sounding, and she adds to the effect with a built-in elegance that's irresistible to R&B and non-R&B fans alike. Hip-hoppers get a custom dose of Michele's magic on "Be O.K.," featuring the flabbergastingly prolific yet still likable Will.i.am, jazz sentimentalists will instantly succumb to "Like a Dream," and anybody with ears on his or her head will warm to the slinky slow jam that is "If I Have My Way." Michele's is a rare talent; count on this outstanding debut propelling her to stratospheric heights. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
I Am, her soulful debut album, is an artistic exploration that fuses 24-year old Chrisette Michele's diverse musical interests into a wonderland. "I realize that I'm new to the music world, but I've been preparing for this moment for long time," says the Long Island native. Even before signing a recording contract, Michele had performed on concert bills with more established artists like Kem, India.Arie, Angie Stone, and Lionel Richie. "India saw me singing at the Village Underground in New York City. She came backstage that first night and graciously offered me a gig as her opening act," says Michele. Working hard in the studio writing songs and recording demos, Michele finished an album's worth of material before even trying to get signed. "I've been creating songs since I was 12, so I knew I needed the right musical blend in order to stand out from the many other performers trying to get a deal." Though already a fan of gospel and classical, it wasn't until Michele was 17 that she also developed a passion for jazz. "When I was still in high school a teacher introduced me to jazz singer Astrud Gilberto, and afterwards my life was all about jazz," she remembers. With the release of I Am, Chrisette Michele will soon be sharing those musical dreams with the rest of the world.Customer Reviews:

Lend Her Your Ear!.......2007-07-11
"I Am" is easily a 5 star album. This album is completely void of fillers, haphazardly written songs and "commercialism". Every song is unique and worth listening to. "If I Have My Way" is the albums most vibrant highlight. It's a remarkable love song. Chrisette is telling her listener that she could easily render herself to this man, however, she knows that it is best if she takes her time and lets love lead them. This song has some of the most profound lyrics I have heard in a long time. "Best of Me" has a catchy hook and once again we are blessed with great songwriting. "Best of Me" is about a woman who wants to give all of herself to a man but he simply doesn't deserve it. "Let's Rock" is my favorite uptempo track on this masterpiece. To describe this song concisely, Chrisette is introducing herself, but she manages to make you dance in the process. "Golden" is just beautiful. Yearning for love and wanting to get married and stay together is this song's subject matter.
I encourage anyone reading this review to check this CD out because you will have a masterpiece added to your music collection. "I Am", Chrisette? Yes, you ARE! You are wonderful, and that may be an understatement.

Chrisette's raspy, strong voice and song's lyrics both entice men, while encourages and empowers women listeners.

Still as good as when they were young.......2007-07-07
I found myself remembering the words to most of the songs, that I thought I had forgotten. You don't forget, the words are just tucked away. They had a couple of new band members but the rest were the good ol' guys we remember. If you don't get to see them, this CD will be the next best thing. You will really enjoy listening to the songs on this CD.

As a band the Grass Roots were always a shadowy bunch, a front for studio musicians and professional songwriters looking to get their songs on the radio. They scored 14 top 40 hits during their reign in the late '60s/early '70s and their hits were among the catchiest and most enjoyable of the AM radio era. "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Bella Linda," "Two Divided by Love," and a slew of others are shameless pop made brilliant by multilayered harmonies and arrangements that liberally borrowed from folk-rock and R&B. The Grass Roots may have been product, but what great product. --Rob O'ConnorAlbum Description
This low-priced disc is far & away the best single-CD compilation ever issued of the Grass Roots' work, 16 chart singles covering every phase of their history, from 1966's 'Where Were You When I Needed You' (in its actual hit version) thru 'Let's Live for Today' & 'Midnight Confessions' to their last hit, 1972's 'The Runway.' Originally released in 1996. MCA.Customer Reviews:

Forrest Gump (1994) is one of the most successful films ever made, winning Tom Hanks his second successive Best Actor Oscar (he won the previous year for Philadelphia) as well as claiming the Best Picture Oscar and many other awards and nominations, including several for music. A unique fable of American life from the 1950s to the 80s, the film blends comedy, drama, war, romance and groundbreaking special effects into a social and political portrait of the passing years, all seen through the eyes of the intellectually challenged but immensely likeable Forrest Gump. The soundtrack is a double album featuring 31 classic pop tunes plus a suite from Alan Silvestri's rich orchestral music, represented more completely on the companion score album. Opening with Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog", this is a fine anthology of three decades of American music, taking in everything from Joan Baez's "Blowin' In The Wind" to Aretha Franklin's "Respect", The Mammas and The Papas' "California Dreamin'" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson". Here also is Scott McKenzie with "San Francisco", plus Jefferson Airplane, the Supremes, Lynyrd Skynrd and many more. Like American Graffiti (1973), this is one of the great pop soundtracks, happily at home in just about any music collection. --Gary S. DalkinCustomer Reviews:

From Amazon.co.uk
Hot on the heels of their shock UK No. 1 single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not confirms Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys as the UK underground's most proselytizing young preachers of the DIY gospel. Marrying nervy, caffeine-and-cigarettes indie clatter to conversational, pretense-free lyrics and the occasional burst of off-the-cuff eloquence ("No time for Montagues or Capulets/Just banging tunes and DJ sets," proffers "Dancefloor"), it's an instant, pulse-racing hit. No question, the Monkeys are more sinners than saints. The opening "The View from the Afternoon" predicts a ruckus with a whole lot more grit than the Kaisers can muster, while on the mellow "Riot Van," a tale of underage drinking and cop-baiting culminates in a messy beating in the back of a station wagon. Look beyond the Arctics' bristly, laddish exterior, however, because it's actually affairs of the heart that comprise this album's secret core: see the sweaty-palmed "Dancing Shoes," bearing testament to the trial of nerves that is pulling in a suburban indie nightclub, or "Mardy Bum"--a tribute to a moody girlfriend that, for all its witty barbs ("I've seen your frown and it's like looking down the barrel of a gun"), is tinted with sweet affection. --Louis PattisonAlbum Description
Musically, there are bits of The Stone Roses, "What's The Story Morning Glory", and "Nevermind". As catchy as those reference points are, it's the songwriting that has won the band a fiercely dedicated following; a mix of the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of The Streets and "Ghost Town" era Specials. Two #1 UK singles. Press already lined up with Rolling Stone, Spin, Entertainment Weekly, and Interview, to name a few. Three more US/Canadian tours planned for this year, including headlining Domino's label showcase at SXSW.Customer Reviews:

Back In Time.......2007-05-16

"It's what we've done/That makes us what we are.".......2007-03-12
"Like a fool I am and I'll always be,
I've got a dream, I've got a dream.
The can change their minds, but they can't change me,
I've got a dream, I've got a dream.
I know I can share it if you want me to,
if you're going my way, I'll go with you."
That "I Got A Dream" was not written by Croce hardly matters...it defined a free spirit that looked for others to join him on his quest. Afterwards, "Time In A Bottle" was plucked for re-issue of from his first album as a memoriam to Croce, and has become a signature song of not just the artist, but the decade he came from.
That debut album, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim," and its title song introduced to Jim Croce by way of his first hit character song. Like so many of his other story songs, Croce managed to perfectly encapsulate blue collar folksongs with a dash of humor. Songs like "Rapid Roy," "Working at The Car Wash Blues" and yet another signature song, "Bad Bad Leroy Brown," were snappy and sing-a-long exact.
There was also that everyman who had just a hint of sadness around the edges. On "Operator," Croce debates the whys and hows of a relationship that has crumbled. He also wasn't always a romantic idealist, as "Lover's Cross" sends an ex-lover off with "I guess you wanted a super guy, or maybe a super God." (The realist is counter-balanced perfectly by the shy encounter in "I'll Have to Say I Love You In A Song.")
Croce's untimely death will always leave a question mark on where his muse would have ultimately led him. He seemed on a course that would have him paralleling the likes of James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot or Cat Stevens as vanguards of seventies male singer-songwriters. With three albums that have maintained their integrity over 30 years of time's passage, this single disc "Classic Hits" culls together a life's work that will long remind us that Jim Croce became a folk icon not just because of his early departure, but because of the brilliance and accessibility of his work.

The Weepies are a duo of songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. How can one not help but be delighted when two such similar sound names align with one another? Perfectly matched, the thirteen songs are quiet but insistent, with lyrics full of pop smarts and poetic depth. Narratives, whether fragmented or direct, empower most of the songs, giving even first-person vantage points a solid foundation. Talan does the bulk of the lead vocals, and her voice is a confident instrument, full of sly surprise and subtle phrasing. The pair's harmonies are thoughtful and evocative, oftentimes utilizing less than obvious intervals. In fact, the chorus vocals owe more to great radio pop of the sixties and seventies than to the various contemporary strains of folk and Americana. --David GreenbergerCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
The Turtles are one of the most fondly remembered '60s pop actsquite an achievement considering that they came up in an era dominated by Motown, The Beatles and other musical giants. After releasing a series of chart-topping singles, including the #1 hit "Happy Together," the band broke up in 1970. Singers Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan continued as a duo under the name Flo & Eddie, recording albums, hosting their own syndicated radio show, and singing backup for T. Rex, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Blondie, and many others. In 1985, they reformed The Turtles as a very successful touring outfit.Happy Together: The Very Best Of The Turtles collects the band's biggest hits, including the career-defining "Happy Together" and Top 20 smash hits "You Showed Me," "You Baby," and "Elenore." The album also features an early Warren Zevon-penned song, "Outside Chance," and Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe," as well as the classic protest anthem "Eve of Destruction."
