On a different note, the Cole Porter songs are wonderful for anyone who enjoys his music, and the singer has a sultry voice that's perfect for the selection.

The Rocketeer: Another great James Horner score.......2003-08-02
My favourite track is "The Flying Circus", a fantastic action cue. (The bass-trombone is great!!)
The track "Jenny" is very beautiful, and one of Horner's best love-themes ever.
There are also two jazzy songs on the album. I think they are very good.
If you are a fan of James Horner, or you like Star Trek II, you might enjoy this cd very much.

The Best Single Shaw Disc.......2007-07-03
above average. This gives a great overview of Shaw's RCA years and the genius he was (he was a trend setter that unfortunatly could never find total happiness in the music business despite the fame and money it brought him). And what a clarinet! There will always be a Goodman/Shaw battle over who was the best clarinet player of the swing era and for good reason. Essential to any big band collection.

Artie Shaw was an uncompromising, brilliant swing musician and bandleader who was always seeking new creative outlets and stretching the boundaries of swing. He frequently broke up his bands and took vacations from music, only to return with new ideas (he finally retired from music for good in the 1950s, and now lives quietly in Los Angeles). This CD is a great introduction (at a great price) to the man and his music. It focuses mostly on his most popular band: the 1938-1939 band that stole away "The King of the Swing" title from the other clarinet bandleader, Benny Goodman. This was the most popular Big Band of its time, but Shaw disbanded it in disgust at the `business' side of the music business. The CD also contains selections from his band of 1940-41, which enlarged to 22 musicians, including a string quartet, and two tracks from his superb small group, The Gramercy Five. All in all, it's a great overview of Shaw's best two musical periods.
Shaw was an incomparable clarinetist and musical experimenter, and the first track, "Nightmare" (the band's theme song) shows off both sides. As a starter for a swing band, it's an unusual, slow, and very creepy track! But the band gets right into the swing of things afterwards, and we hear the classics that made this 1938-39 band such a powerhouse: "Back Bay Shuffle," "Any Old Time" (with a vocal by Billie Holliday!), "Indian Love Call" (which shows how Shaw could turn a commercial tune his label forced on him into a dazzling work of art -- with a great `skat' vocal from sax player Tony Pastor), "Oh! Lady Be Good" (one of the hottest dance numbers ever!), "Serenade to a Savage" (superb percussion work on this odd piece); and the high-octane power of the one the fastest swing numbers of all time: "Traffic Jam." The band's musicians, which included Buddy Rich on drums, and Georgie Auld and Tony Pastor on tenor sax, just amaze at every turn. The band's principal vocalist, Helen Forrest, sings three beautiful but very swingin' numbers: "Comes Love," "Deep Purple," and "Moon Ray" (which is a live performance from a radio broadcast). Forrest sang with two other great bands of the era, Benny Goodman and Harry James, but she was at her best with Shaw's band: her voice was simply a perfect fit for the musicians, and she seemed to understand exactly what they were all about.
But the big hit of this band was "Begin the Beguine," which Shaw `rescued' from a failed Cole Porter musical and turned into three minutes of the best American music ever recorded. This beautiful jazz performance both swings and croons, and even though Shaw later referred to the piece as an "anchor around my neck" because of its huge popularity, I think any musician would be proud to have such an incredible number so closely connected to him.
The tracks from the second band are "Frenesi," "Temptation," "Blues (Parts I & II)," "Moonglow," and "Stardust." The sound is much different, containing the influence of classical music thanks to the string quartet, but it is nonetheless true swing as well. The sound is unique, even if it isn't quite as amazing as the first band. "Temptation" is the real stand-out here; Shaw's solo is startling and inspiring. Two tracks from the small group The Gramercy Five -- "Special Delivery Stomp" and "Summit Ridge Drive" -- show how experimental Shaw was during this period: he replaced the piano with a harpsichord! These are astonishing small jazz recordings. (If you want more of this, buy "The Complete Gramercy Five Sessions" CD.)
The sound is, for the most part, quite good. There is some crackle and noise, but thankfully the producers didn't use any serious noise reduction, like I've heard on some discs, that dampens the instrument range and cuts off the high frequency. Believe me, you won't notice that hiss and crackles within a few minutes when you hear the clarity of the instruments.
This is a great deal on CD packed with one of America's finest musicians at his peak. If you've heard Goodman or Glenn Miller, you owe it to yourself to meet Artie Shaw. Trust me, you'll be amazed.

This 10-CD wallet box set includes 250 tracks! Documents. 2005.Album Details
Bandleader, Clarinetist and Arranger Artie Shaw's Recording of "Begin the Beguine" Became So Popular in 1938 that it Brought Him to an Even Footing with the Other So-called "King of Swing" -- Benny Goodman. Shaw was an Innovator as Well as a Hit Maker. He was One of the First White Bandleaders to Hire Black Musicians, and his Orchestral Compositions Won Him Respect in the Classical Music World. This 10-CD Box Includes Over 200 Tracks!Customer Reviews:
An amazing deal for some amazing music........2006-11-02
Magnificent best value 10 CD set of the music of the great Artie Shaw........2006-03-22
With over 230 tunes of this great maestro, available at a most reasonable price generally, it is worth the outlay to get a collection of the best of his outstanding music.
The cover contains a printing error in the top left hand corner under his signature, although a minor thing.
It lists Artie Shaw's life covering 1909-2004. He was actually born in 1910 (May 23rd).
A surprise.......2005-05-19
Not so with this box. I've gotten through about half of it and it is quite impressive. The transfers are generally good and whoever did the remastering used very little noise reduction, and left enough surface noise so that it doesn't detract from the music or deaden the sound. It actually is as good as some of the Chronologial Classics Shaw material I have. The tracks vary in quality based on the discs used for transfers but overall this is a good box. And at sixteen or seventeen bucks for 250 tracks of some of the greatest music ever recorded - well if you're disappointed after that then you may be a tad too critical.
I have a lot of Shaw and he had wonderful bands. This box set is as good or better than much of the recodings I have. I have seen this box retail for fifty dollars - beware you can get it a lot cheaper. There is no booklet and the CD's come in cardboard sleeves but the discs come out easily and they are in perfect condition
Not a bad find for so little.

Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07
Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.
I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.
I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.
Delight in every note.......2006-03-10
So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.
I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.
While they last..........2005-05-17
Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.
Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. And this boxed set is a pocket full of memories to be treasured. Buy it before this too becomes unavailable. Grady Harp, May 05
Treasures From a Treasure.......2004-09-25
Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.
What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.
I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)
Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.
More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

Customer Reviews:
A smooth voice in a smooth repertoire........2004-04-04
The sound quality is more than acceptable. It isn't digital, but here the fidelity comes from the artistry and not the sound itself. In fact the sound quality is a lot better than the 1955 recording date might indicate. I was not bothered in the least ... in fact I was pleasantly surprised.
There are unfortunately lots of typos in the notes that should have been corrected. Myto should review such things before putting them out on the market.
Siepi's way with the Italian songs is equally enjoyable. How nice to have someone sing them instead of bawling them to the rafters. This is a winner album, and it would be 5 stars if the sound were a little more modern.
Delightful collection of songs performed by great artist.......1999-05-24
