Simplemente genial..! es el mejor disco de guitarra clasica que he escuchado en mi vida..!
Marvelous!.......2006-08-09
Excellent interpretation.......2006-03-18
I consider Alirio Diaz' interpretations of Venezuelan guitar music to be the gold standard, and yet I was happily surprised by John's version of these pieces.
amazing!.......2005-06-20
If you like Venezuelan music this is definitely a jewel you must have. And If you haven't listened to it before I can't imagine a better way to be introduced to it.
Brilliant!.......2005-06-03
I think John Williams always wanted to do things that branched out from the 'classical' classics, but went silly with Sky. Here, is the happy medium!! He plays these songs with a fun-spirited nature, non-seriouso, with glissandi, fast tempi, strong rhytmic drive. I still like the Gerald Garcia reccordings (Latin American Guitar Music, Naxos) a real lot, but i think that Williams plays them in the true Venezolano spirit. 4.925719/5

To Error Is Human.......2007-06-22
From pop star to has been.......2006-01-12
To top it off, the LP also contains the worse song that Donovan ever wrote - "Intergalactic Laxative." I like to think of this song as one of the final nails in the coffin, the song that instantly pushed Donovan from popular to has been. In an instant, Donovan goes from whimsical to crude, from hip to insipid, from mystical to juvenile. It's truly an embarrassing song, and it blights the entire LP.
So why 3 stars for this CD? Actually, it's for the Essence to Essence part of it because that LP has always had a certain charm to it. Certainly it can't hold a candle to his 60s LPs or to "Beat Cafe", but it's more consistent than Cosmic Wheels, and while the lyrics still aren't great, his music has a playfulness to it that makes it fun to listen to. Worthwhile songs include "Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth," "Yellow Star," and "Life is a Merry-Go-Round."
If you're just starting to get into Donovan, don't buy this CD. Start with one of his excellent best of CDs, either his greatest hits, or "Try for the Sun" or "Troubadour." If you want to explore Donovan's music further, try any of his masterpieces from the 60s, and get the remastered imports because the sound is fantastic. I also highly recommend "Beat Cafe" his 2004 CD which compares favorably with his 60s music. But if you're a Donovan die-hard, you might as well get this CD too.
The Mystic Minstrel of the 20th Century.......2005-03-19
Sailing Homeward are absolute musts to have in your collection.
They both have minimal accompaniment and in my opinion that is when Donovan is at his best. Although he has made some great electric music over the years, all he really needs is an acoustic guitar and that great built-in vibrato voice of his to bring goose bumps to your skin. Listen and enjoy.
Finally on CD!.......2004-02-28

A DQ Blizzard of metal.......2007-07-06
Everything you've read about the singer's voice is correct. Operatic style. I understand what people mean when they say it reminds them of Nightwish, but I hear it somewhat as Therion and (a little) Devil Doll - but it's really more its own animal than anything else, and meshes incredibly well with the music, as do all of the accompanying stringed instruments.
Some of these songs are almost pop in their addictiveness! You'll have difficulty getting out of your head tunes like "Rag Doll Physics", "Wedding March For A Bullet", and "Porcelain Judas". "Balrog Boogie" is the most jazzy of the tracks (along with the outro on "Pink Noise Waltz"), although the lyrics sound like random Latin phrases. "Heroines" mixes in sultry slinkiness that reminds me of David Lynch. "Gunpowder Chant" is a lengthy intro that leads into the techno-tinges at the beginning of "Infralove", where you'll also find guitar reminiscent of Vic Flick. "Pink Noise Waltz" is a piece of art into itself, and sounds like it could've been a missing track from Ayreon's Human Equation.
Any of you out there who aren't repulsed by operatic vocals and are tired of the same old thing - check out their myspace. Find their homepage. Do something! Listen to as much as you can. Absorb it into your auditory vocabulary and elevate your palate to another plane, should your tastes oblige.
This is like a DQ Blizzard of heavy metal. You get a variety of musical treats mixed in with your metal ice cream to complement and play off of each other without losing its true flavor. I hope their next serving is offered up with a dash of Mike Patton.
4½ stars (rounded to 5)
What's this!?.......2007-04-18
Since then, I've spent many years exploring this interesting musical genre, and have found a few great bands (Within Temptation, Oratory, Leaves Eyes) and a boatload of horrid bands (Edenbridge, the thunderously terrible Alas, and WAY too many others to name). But not since the first time I heard that first song have I ever sat up and taken notice of a truly different sound.
Until I discovered Diablo Swing Orchestra.
Where to begin? The opening track, "Balrog Boogie," is like nothing I've ever heard before. Mixing elements of jazz, swing, metal, opera, and a sly sense of humor, this track defies categorization. Strangely enough, it reminds me of something you'd hear on one of the old "Muppet Show" episodes, all creative and entertaining.
The thing is, each song on this album is unique in its own way. Some have the jazz sound, some have a mariachi flavor, others feel like something out of the old west. As far as instruments go, in addition to the usual guitar/bass/drum mix, there's cellos, horns, violins, flutes, and even a didgeridoo to be found in the various songs. And those are just the ones I could identify - I'm sure there's more.
What ties most all of the songs together is good, quality musicianship, a metallic heaviness, and a female lead singer who sounds like she just stepped off the stage of the Met. When I say she sings in an "opera" style, I mean it - this isn't some sort of high vibralto that she only hits in dramatic parts. No, she sings like Carolin Fortenbacher did on that one-off rock reimagining of Mozart's "die Königin der Nacht" that came out a couple of years ago.
I wonder if her folks are all upset about paying for her classical music training, and then she goes and uses it to front an oddball metal band.
Perhaps that's what attracts me so much to this group - you really have to like metal AND opera in order to enjoy their sound. There's a few parts where a (somewhat underutilized) male voice chimes in, and even the lead vocalist calms it down once or twice, but other than that, you'd better be a fan of opera, or at least have an open mind.
My favorite tracks include "Poetic Pitbull Revolutions," "Rag Doll Physics," and "Wedding March for a Bullet." Visit their MySpace page for samples.
I just can't overemphasize how unique and unprecedented this album is.

HOT DAMN.......2001-03-11
This disk has something for both groups. Montana gets more vocals on this one than on most of the full disks (didja hear a BMW door just slam?) Rolle, Buddy and Jerry are there too, pumping out all the energy and fun that made the Farmers who they were. I think these guys loved every minute of performing and it shows here (check out some of the fan sites with accounts of Montana's antics. The big guy had one heck of a good time messing up his health.). There is a good solid musical core too. Tell your buddies that say they were just a novelty band where they can file that for future reference.
The Farmers do a cover of Neil Young's Powder Finger that blows away the original. Glad and greasy, the cover tune, is the kind of good fun that set the hook for most fans after they took the first nibble at Happy Boy or California Kid.
The Beat Farmers as a band died with Country Dick. Buy this CD and enjoy some of the best stuff they did. And while your at it bully any record execs you see into finding some old Country Dick and the Snuggle Bunnies to press.

Some gem discoveries but definitely more for the 60s fanatic than the average rock fan.......2006-02-05
The band did innovate in its guitarist's use of viola bow to play and the use of "paint bombs" in their onstage performances. Performance art, though, translates to video and DVD...not CDs. What they'll be judged on HERE is their music.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"Making Time" comes charging out of the gate with an insistent riff. The Who-like "Painter Man" details the saga of an art school grad who discovers no ones cares about his work. (That is, until he begins to draw nude postcards.) "Try and Stop Me" is in the Hollies mode..a nifty pop nugget, while "Can I Join Your Band?" is a witty Brit version of "So You Want to be a Rock and Roll Star" featuring this lyrical gem: "Can I join your band?/My new guitar/my coat is suede...I'm a hippie guy/Always stoned and 8 miles high."
LOWS:
The biggest curse of albums of this vintage is a profusion of cover songs to pad out albums. Often, this was done without regard to whether the tunes fit the band well. On here, the most egregious examples are the pallid remake of "Like a Rolling Stone" and the limp "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" which won't have anyone getting rid of their Buckinghams CD.
BOTTOM LINE:
Diehard 60s "acid/garage rock" heads will probably find this a must but for the rest of us, it's hit and miss. If you find it in a bargain bin (as I did), definitely get it...the great stuff is worth having. But do NOT pay the hefty import price.
Forgotten Pop Gems.......2004-06-03
Not every song works but there are enough good ones to merit the price. It has the first use of a bowed guitar, before Jimmy Page even. Lots o fun.
Biff! Bang! Pow!.......2003-09-14
PS - "Biff! Bang! Pow!"'s opening chords are identical to The Who's "A Legal Matter." They only closely resemble "My Generation"'s opening chords. But only a fanatical spoilsport would mention this. :-)
An Unkown Rare collection.......2003-09-09
"life is just begining" , "painter man" (later coverd by The Television personalties, along with making time) "The girls are naked and they dance"
The Greatest Band that Never Was..........2002-10-23
And the music is incredibly memorable! I had never heard of the Creation before, and saw them locally on a whim. I wanted to get their CD immediately, but held off for about a month. It is amazing how many songs I recognized from their concert, having only heard them once!
There really isn't a bad song on the CD, save for a few poorly chosen covers ("Mercy, Mercy," "Hey Joe"), and one could almost hear the evolution and emergence of a great band, had they stuck it out.
As sad as it is that this band had such a brief recording career, what's even more tragic is how virtually unknown they are. Surely, they were as good as any other band in the mid-sixties, and deserve to be part of classic rock stations' play list as much as the Zombies, the Animals, and any other of the lesser British Invasion bands.
If you like the Kinks and Who circa 1966-67, then you need to include the Creation into your collection. They're that good!

The Kronos Quartet--apparently tired of performing some of the most riveting Western classical works composed in the last century--decided to take a vacation with Caravan. Where did they go? As evidenced by this globetrotting disc, seemingly everywhere. Music from the Middle East, South America, India, Portugal, and California (to name just a few) find their way onto this genre-blurring disc, along with a few surprises. They do a dizzying take on Dick Dale's "Miserlou," which we learn was originally written by Nicholas Roubanis in the '30s; perform a tune from India's bustling "Bollywood" film music industry; and tackle Terry Riley's inventive "Corgeo Funebre en el Monte Diablo"--the second movement of his Requiem for Adam (written for the late son of Kronos leader David Harrington). These are disparate but enthralling works that run the gamut from frenetic to reflective. Even though Caravan sounds less cohesive than Kronos's other world music foray, Pieces of Africa, this is still an enthralling collection and a must for Kronos fans. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
unpleasant sounds.......2006-11-10
Another great Kronos.......2002-07-09
This is mostly middle eastern/central europe stuff and even if I THINK I know way some argentinian/portuguise tracks are in this (because of that argentininan tango has it roots in middle europe.. portugal cobining bandelon with portuguese fado) it feels misplaced here but artisticially it is very good performed anyway and... hows about "Miserlou Twist" then.. well composer of that old hit has his roots in Libanon so.. :-).
Anyway is this very good, fun, well played and sound, production is also something extra.
You be pleased with this if you like stringquartets with more of a folklore style but my advice is that you by this togheter with Nuevo then you have two great great discs.
People used to Kronos cooperation with Glass, Steve Riech should like this but it is def. NOT minimalism att all.
Stunning.......2000-11-19
Then I heard of Kronos Quartet. They were raved about on a movie review for "Requiem for a Dream," which they are mostly responsible for the entire score on. So, I decided to give them a bit of a chance. I bought three of their albums, "Early Music," and "Kronos Quartet performs Phillip Glass." The most important of all of these is "Caravan."
The last CD I listened to, I was a little afraid to, because I figured I'd enjoy Western pieces a little more, and probably wouldn't like the more 'world' sound this album seems to say it has.
I couldn't have been more wrong, from the opening track, "Pannoia Boundless," I was in love, raving about it to everyone I knew. Every track seems to have an energy that oozes from within it, these dynamics that manage to grab me and toss me around every time. Even the weakest track, being "Cortejo Funebre en el Monte Diablo," because of the horribly synth-sounding beats, horns, and bells, still has a certain power after you get past the horrible intro of the song.
Either way, Kronos Caravan is a great listen for anyone just dabbling in classical string quartets and wants something a little more high power and intrusive than your average "background music."
And they never stepped off the train..........2000-07-22
Osvaldo Golijov's arrangements excel at highlighting various effects of instrumental combinations. That's a plus. However, these performances are mostly shorn of whatever vitality is inherent in the compositions, by the quartet's lack of rhythmic unity and attack - some of these takes sound like tentative rehearsals. The worst in this respect has to be "Aaj Ki Raat". Anyone who knows Indian film music is aware of its energy and manic quality. This performance, however, has none of that, opting instead for a navel-gazing lack of dynamism that actually serves to bury the melodic theme, in lieu of which we are given the sound of tablas, which even Zakir Hussain can't make jive with the ennervated ensemble.
Not surprisingly, the only impassioned performance is "Turceasca", likely because most of the music is played by Taraf de Haidouks, a Romanian Gypsy ensemble that lends its "quaint" and "primitive" spunk to the tastemaker quartet, producing a "rousing, olde country" stewe.
Anyone with an interest in music beyond her/his borders should pick up the real thing, spend a little money, force her/himself to get used to its strangeness, and maybe she/he will come away a little wiser. Oh, yes, purchase an honest classical disc next time, as well.
Beautiful!.......2000-07-13
