This Mexican trio brings a much-needed breath of fresh air to the Latin alternative movement: their sophomore effort stands as a strong contender for best rock en español album of 2005. Brilliantly produced by Café Tacuba keyboardist Emmanuel Del Real, Jardín shimmers with the infectious power of its jangly guitars and the buoyant humor of the groups' decidedly goofy lyrics. Boasting a guest vocal appearance by Mexican rocker Natalia Lafourcade, the title track's sweet psychedelic vibe evokes both Tacuba and The Beatles, whereas the lounge undertones and electronic blips of "Viko" will delight fans of nostalgic popsters such as England's Saint Etienne. The members of Liquits may have a weakness for wide-eyed contemplation, but when they rock (check out the rollicking chorus of "Chido"), their music assumes an electrifying sense of urgency that has been sorely missing from Latin music. Although it contains only 10 songs, Jardín elevates Liquits to the echelons of rock en español royalty. --Ernesto Lechner

4 out of 5 stars This album is a sampler of Linda's Spanish language songs.......2006-01-02

The sources for the 20 songs of this album are:
six each from "Canciones de mi Padre", "Mas Canciones", and "Frenesi", and
one each from "Hasten Down the Wind" and "Winter Light."

Your enjoyment of this CD will depend on which other CDs you already own.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation!.......2005-07-22

As a kid, growing up in LA, I was unconscioulsy registering several cultural influences, chief amongst them surf music, then rock, then perhaps Mexican music, via a UHF channel I used to watch, primarily for the bull fighting, but secondarily because I liked Mariachi music, and some class trips to Alvarado Street.

This CD takes me back to those roots. It's an amalgam of her canciones to Ms Rondstadt's beloved padre, which have become classics of the idiom, plus a few of her standards and offshoots from the past few years. . She's probably sold more PBS subscriptions via these recordings than any other entertainer, amd for good reason. She's brilliant! The songs are non pareil! Her execution is flawless! The accompaniments/arrangements are note perfect, as well! What's not to love?

The CD also includes some of her better covers of other songwriters like Dylan ( A great rendition of Tom Thumb's Blues, one of my favortie songs of all time), "I go to Pieces," from her "We Ran" Album///just a great mix of one great artist's oevre! It's better than a greatest hits mix, by far. Highly listenable! Highly collectable!!
Check out her paean on to Lady Day on "Fools Rush In," in particular. The vocals and the arrangement are un canny! (sic!)

Do take notice that this is not just a compilation of her two Canciones CDs. There is a great melange here. What a great chanteuse this lady is! She's taken the mantle from Ms Peggy Lee and Ms Rosemary Clooney, et al. She's the real deal!

A Big Must Buy!

5 out of 5 stars que bonito!.......2005-06-11

Ay que lindas son estas canciones. How wonderful to hear Linda Ronstadt tapping into the roots of her Mexican father. How joyful to hear the melodious notes of "Charreada" from this soulful diva. You feel transported to another time and place with these wonderful boleros, mariachi and ballads. "Cuando Me Querias Tu" is filled with haunting restraint and expression, and the devestating, achingly beautiful "Siempre Hace Frio" which has been covered by many different artists, is especially stirring here. Another tune worth noting is "Piel Canala." I found myself doing a modified rumba at the Borders listening station. This really makes you think of classic 1950s romantic music from Mexico. Enjoy this. Ay, it will truly break your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Very good collection of her spanish songs.......2004-07-16

I just got finish listen to this cd and I love it to death she is now one of my new favorite artist in spanish. I love her voice it is very strong and I can't wait to get more.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect Compilation Of Her Songs In Spanish.......2004-04-29

I give this cd 4 9/10 stars because:

1) In the liner notes she incorrectly describes the song Piel Canela as one of the most beautiful songs from México. Although this song has been recorded by artists of many countries, the Original Hit Version was recorded by its composer the late Bobby Capó, a legendary singer/songwriter/entertainer from Puerto Rico.

2) The Spanish version of Blue Bayou( Lago Azul) should have included, she still sings it in her concerts.

5 out of 5 stars A Must have if you're a cello lover.......2006-11-26

Faure's cello works feature great melodies. Isserlis' performance features great sensitivity to the music's form and wonderful use of technique. He is also one of the best when it comes to French chamber music in general. In my studies on the violin I am most familiar/exposed/trained-in with works from this period by French composers, so when I compare any other performances I would have to say this CD is my pick. One of my all-time favorite records, this CD is beautiful and satisfying to listen to on any given day, any given time. I have three copies of this CD because I keep "losing" my primary copy, and I am fine with having paid for it three times.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime performances of some too-oft overlooked chamber gems.......2006-01-07

When listening to any music, but classical music in particular, I live by the advice of some wise old public radio announcer (who I suspect also read Aaron Copland's bible on "What To Listen For In Music"): A great musical album is the combined product of 1.) well-written music, 2.) impeccably performed, and 3.) flawlessly recorded.

Well, here's Exhibit A.

This RCA recording of Steven Isserlis (mostly with pianist Pascal Devoyon) performing the cello works of Gabriel Faure is remarkable. It's truly unfortunate that most casual listeners of classical music are only familiar with Faure's "Dolly", "Requiem", or perhaps some of his fine piano compositions (of which there are many), because he has a fine catalog of other chamber works (violin sonatas, trios, quartets, quintets [stunning!] etc.), as well as some great orchestral works and songs.

His compositional style which combines typical French Impressionistic coloring with lush Romantic styling is clearly evident on these beautiful, playful, emotional cello works. Isserlis gives each piece his individual attention, and his phrasing seems effortless and spot on. The trademark tone of his cello is perfectly mic'd and reproduced here on this recording.

You'll love every minute of this brilliant album. It has that certain something that makes it stand out from the rest of your library as a special musical experience that you'll want to keep revisiting over and over (at the unfortunate expense of some worthy competitors in your collection!).

This is a "Top Ten" cd in my personal collection of over 800 classical cd's. You can't go wrong here, folks.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 9.6/10; Performance = 9.7/10; Production = 9.5/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 9.6 ("5 stars")

5 out of 5 stars this CD is a real pleasure.......2005-10-08

Faure's compositions on this disc are consistently great works in his usual vein of subtle beauty. Isserlis has big, rich tone and the piano accompianist does a nice job. The sound is top notch. This is well worth your money and if you are not familiar with Faure it would be a great place to start. Any comment that these pieces sound alike is true only in that a cello and piano are involved. The pieces themselves have obviously varied musical content.

5 out of 5 stars Add this to your collection.......1999-06-08

Although the pieces start to sound alike, the melodies are gorgeous and the piano/cello arrangements are sublime. Great for an evening of solitude, romance, or a cocktail party.

5 out of 5 stars The classical heritage .......2006-04-16

The visible embellishment of this noble instrument was enriched still more by the Spanish composers, who following the traces of his contemporaries. In the case of Fernando Sor, Haydn was his musical guide, where as Aguado, could establish himself with major vehemence, due its particular style, based in the notable right-hand articulation, eschewed the classical patterns, being able to print his own music a flamboyant and refined character.

In the particular case of Fernando Sor, we have a wisdom blending of the counterpoint technique, an evocative mood from his own that, added the well known influence of the Italian composers (Domenico Cimarrosa and Giovanni Batista Pergolesi) and his beloved love for the Operatic genre, allowed him to enrich still more the lyrical possibilities of the guitar. Besides, unlike Nicolo Paganini, for instance fortunately did not transform the guitar in a simple device to show his overwhelming gifts. He used the guitar to play music, on the opposite approach of Paganini who used the music as mere device to play his instrument.

In the guitar genre there has not been most deserved and superb tribute to Mozart that this Variations Op. 9 based on a motive of The most famous Mozart ?s Magic Flute. Loaded of such imaginative freshness and enraptured inspiration you may notice that one of the Variations conserves an undeniable Italian flavor; this is one of the most beloved hidden treasures the guitar can offers us, which raise with special charm in the hands of this formidable soloist.

Aguado on the contrary acquired due his personal state of things, a notable adroitness who excelled by far, to Sor, so his musical approaches rode in opposite directions, trying to exploit at maximum levels the technical possibilities of the instrument.

Julian Bream makes a colossal tribute to both composers in this egregious and golden album.

5 out of 5 stars Capturing the Sounds of Space and Water and Clouds.......2005-11-02

Kaija Saariaho continues to enhance our contemporary music scene with compositions that incorporate the finest of orchestration of traditional instruments combined with the still nascent classical music manipulations of electronic music. Few do this as well as she.

'Du Cristal...À la Fumée' are separate works in time but play so beautifully together they seem to be a continuum. There are wondrous masses of sound created by closely spacing pitches within orchestral choirs, a technique that while not new, in Saariaho's talented hands seem to go beyond even the once avant-garde compositions of Ligeti and Messiaen and Lindberg and find a tonal range that for once treats sound clusters as progressive linear music. The results are overwhelmingly beautiful. In the hands of her close friend and fellow composer - Esa-Pekka Salonen - and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the complex works feel genuinely transparent.

Included on this CD is a work written for the Kronos Quartet - 'Nymphéa' - which as a work for strings alone could easily be transposed to full orchestra, but instead Saariaho has created an intimate work for quartet and electronic enhancement. The marriage between traditional instruments and the augmentation by electronic means is seamless and lifts the work to new heights of creativity. The final work here is a piece for solo cello - 'Sept Papillions' - and virtually flutters about in keeping with its title. The fine soloist is another Saariaho fellow musician, Finnish cellist Anssi Kartunnen, and is able to move among these miniature works with great technical facility and great beauty. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, November 05

5 out of 5 stars Music of great beauty and a fine introduction to Saariaho.......2005-10-14

The several pieces by Kaija Saariaho on this Ondine reissue were written mainly in the early 1990s, when she was still concerned with timbre--recent Saariaho is more melodically inclined, with disappointing results. Each is performed by an all-star lineup, with Salonen leading the Los Angeles Philharmonic on the two orchestral pieces, Kronos Quartet on "Nymphea", and great Finnish cellist Anssi Kartunnen performing "Sept Papillions" (just one of the several works Saariaho wrote with him in mind).

"Du cristal" (1990) and "...a la fumee" (1991) for orchestra were Saariaho's first creation for large ensemble and, as their titles suggest, are closely related. In the first piece, the orchestra works mainly in unison in creating crescendos and diminuendos of great proportions, while percussion bubbles on the surface. The last sound of "Du cristal" is a cello trill played sul ponticello, which becomes the first sound of "...a la fumee". In this second work, the addition of two soloists--flute and cello--and live electronics disrupts the uniformity of sound, resulting in the "smoke" of the title. While the first piece is especially reminiscent of Ligeti's "Atmospheres", the richness of harmony can be closely compared to the style Magnus Lindberg was discovering around the same time, but less kinetic and slower-moving.

"Nymphea" for string quartet and electronics (1987) was written for the Kronos Quartet and is an example of early Saariaho. While the quartet performs, electronics are used to broaden the sounds mere moral instrumentalists are capable of, and contrasts, as the composer explains, "limpid, delicate textures with violent, shattering masses of sound." This is by far the most avant-garde piece on the disc, but I find I get more and more out of it as I learn about the use of electronics in contemporary music. "Sept Papillions" for solo cello (2000) was the first piece Saariaho wrote after her opera "L'amour de loin" and a new arrival on what is otherwise a reissue disc. These miniatures are of varying interest, but at their height are lovely. The second and sixth are heartbreakingly beautiful.

This CD was the first exposure I had to Saariaho's work, and it was so pleasantly shocking that I immediately went out and bought everything else available.

4 out of 5 stars from crystal into smoke..........2005-06-23

Though Saariaho studied computer composition technology at Boulez's IRCAM, her music sounds more like Ligeti than Boulez. In fact, "Du cristal" sounds quite a bit like "Atmospheres," a static piece of shifting, dissonant chords. Rolling, pounding tympani and bells give it a richer texture than Ligeti's sparse and eerie works from the early 1960s. The monolithic blocks of sound and crescendos also reflect the rough-hewn aesthetic of Xenakis. The second part of the diptych, "...a la fumee," is the high point of this disc -- flute and cello emerge from the crystalline structure, and weave an enchanting labyrinth. The last piece, "Nymphea," is a string quartet with electronics, commissioned by and performed by the Kronos Quartet. Compared with the version recorded a couple of years later by the Arditti Quartet (on FROM SCANDINAVIA -- see my 4/27/02 review), this is a brash, "rock" reading. I prefer the more subtle AQ interpretation, but that might be because I heard it first.

This is superb modern music, part of the uncompromising vision of the post-war avant-garde, combining Saariaho's Finnish roots with the French stream she has joined since relocating to Paris in the early 1980s. She studied with Grisey, and her music has clear affinities with Tristan Murail as well, the other main spectralist composer (see my 8/6/04 review of his GONDWANA disc).

This is a reissue of a 1993 Ondine disc (see my 11/7/02 review) -- the only addition is the fine cello solo piece "Sept Papillons" (8'), played by Anssi Karttunen.

For more Saariaho recordings and reviews see my FINNISH COMPOSERS OF MY GENERATION list, which also features Magnus Lindberg.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars Apart from flutter and bluster, this is divinely beautiful........2007-05-18

This 3CD recording presents a very substantial part of Debussy's vocal works. It's full of the most superb and mysterious songs you'll ever hear. Debussy had such a marvellously unique harmonic approach, and it gives the impression of mist and mystery, of the insubstantial and unearthly. This makes those songs which feature characters of the Italian commedia d'arte (Harlequin, Pierrot, Columbine, etc.) so astonishing, and his songs of the beauties of the night and the moon so very beautiful.

The songs are almost entirely of a very high standard, and show how well Debussy knew the voice. (In my opinion, he particularly knew the virtues of the typical light high French soprano voice, and I can certainly attest that the majority of his songs lie beautifully and very comfortably in the soprano coloratura voice.) Occasionally there's a song that isn't of that typical high standard (the peculiar but very early song "Rondel chinois" comes to mind - it's a lovely thing to sing, but it's not a song of any distinction), but most of these are perfect gems.

The singing on this set varies a little. On the plus side is the ever-beautiful Elly Ameling, who had perhaps the most limpidly beautiful light lyrical soprano voice the world has ever heard; the amazing Frederica von Stade, who sings divinely; Michele Command, whose more robust soprano voice is often stunning; the experienced baritone Gérard Souzay (I have to admit I do not like his voice myself - his timbre and approach are not to my taste - but he is certainly very experienced in this genre and his French is so beautiful to listen to)... and on the not-so-plus side (for me, anyway) is the coloratura soprano of Mady Mesplé. I know there are devoted fans of Ms Mesplé - I must admit I am not one of them. While I admire the glorious ease of her top notes, and the young and attractive sound of the voice's natural timbre, I LOATHE what is to me an unbearable fluttering vibrato that ruins her singing. It sounds extraordinarily under-supported and very uncomfortable - but I also admit that Ms Mesplé clearly has a deep feeling for these mélodies. She certainly knows how to phrase - and certainly the range of her voice is remarkable. If only that twitter could be magicked away... then I'd probably be very satisfied with her singing.

Overall, then, this set is a charming and well-chosen array of almost all of Debussy's vocal output. It is not complete, though. I would recommend supplementing this delightful 3CD set with the recording of Debussy songs by Sandrine Piau, the somewhat bland but extremely pretty recording of Debussy's early songs by Gillian Keith, and the recording of Debussy songs sung by Anne-Marie Rodde (again, so very pretty, and it is one of the few recordings to include Debussy's duet "Chanson espagnole" - which is otherwise represented quite hideously on a recording by a tenor and baritone).

There's also some amazingly beautiful singing of Debussy songs on an album by Christine Oelze (her timbre reminds me so much of Ameling's - just lovely, and what excellent French!).

I have not listened to Dawn Upshaw's recording of Debussy songs, as she is not one of my favourite singers, but given that I've enjoyed her French performances in the past, I do plan to add her recording entitled "Forgotten Songs" to my collection.

And with all of that lot, you, the Debussy collector, will have a truly wonderful collection of Debussy's songs to hand!

    3 out of 5 stars good value.......2007-01-07

Whilst this may not be the most amazing of all recordings of Debussy's works, it stands to say that it is a valuable source of listening reference for singer and indeed fans for Debussy's works. 3 discs make it a worthwhile bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice sellection of pieces and artists.......2006-05-01

'Melodies', a three CD collection of art songs by Claude Debussy is a far better investment than the Dawn Upshaw issue, 'Forgotten Songs' which I recently reviewed. At the very least, it seems these songs are not as forgotton as Upshaw would make us believe, as here they are on a collection headlining Elly Ameling and Frederica von Stade. I am not really up on modern classical performers, but even I know these are two major league sopranos.

If you like Debussy, you will certainly like this collection. If you are a died in the wool Upshaw fan, Miss Dawn's effort may sould a bit better to you.

I think this one definitely gives you more for the money.

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous compositions, moments of great performing.......2002-08-07

This compilation is a fantastic resource for singers and colaborative pianists everywhere--and no one will argue with the beauty of Debussy's compositions.
Gerard Souzay seems like he's just going through the motions on all of his tracks; Elly Ameling has fabulous technique as always, but there is something wanting; Mady Mesple gives a great (if not heartfelt) performance. The standout performance on this disc is of the Ariettes Oubliees, as performed by Frederica von Stade. Beautiful, and the emotion is there.
I would recommend it for any singer's library. I do, however, hesitate to give it 5 stars and recommend it to everyone because the emotion just isn't there through many of the tracks--and Debussy without emotion is like bread without yeast--flat.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Tribute to Debussy's Melodies.......2000-11-18

This set of cds is a must for anyone interested on performing any of Debussy's melodies. It really helps to listen to these to learn the pieces, as the singers are supurb and perform the songs with great artistic interpretation.

4 out of 5 stars NOT for Brightman fanboys :) .......2007-05-14

Guys, if you don't know, what it is - besides the obvious - don't buy it. I almost regretted the purchase and started to enjoy it only after I overcame the shock. On this LP Sarah Brightman sings English songs that were popular in the XIX century and the musical tastes changed since then rather dramatically. So check out the samples first!

5 out of 5 stars A great showcase for Sarah's exceptional tone .......2007-01-29

While other people may think this collection of songs does not do Sarah's voice justice, I strongly disagree. Indeed, if anything her New Age-sounding albums (such as Luna or something or other) I find horrendous and I think they completely scatter the good qualities of her voice. Not so in this album. True, the songs here are not well-known nor are they decorated with operatic frills which Sarah has the well-known ability to perform, but there is a different beauty here, my friends. The legato, angelic quality of Sarah Brightman's voice can truly be heard in these simple melodies, light and free from the heavy chains of pulsed pop and mediocre attempts at an Enya-like portrayal. THESE songs she sings well, THIS is one of her better albums, and HERE is her beautiful sound which I missed in some of her other albums.

5 out of 5 stars Sarah in Recital.......2006-06-08

I believe I own all of the CDs Sarah Brightman has put out and yes, this one is quite different from all the others she's done.

In this CD she sings (in a strictly classical style) some of the many British folksongs collected and arranged by Benjamin Britten; she is accompanied here by only a piano. Thus if you like classical singing and traditional Brit folksongs, then this is the CD for you. If you're wanting something more pop, hip, musical-theatrical, or celtic--look elsewhere.

Sarah has developed her voice over time and this CD is a good example of how all those singing lessons have paid off as she has a beautiful classical voice (amply evident on this CD) as well as the big, full belt style she delivers in musical theatre production numbers (on other CDs).

This is a great CD for these reasons, but not one for the masses.

2 out of 5 stars Folk songs are not suited to The Divine Sarah's voice.......2005-08-24

When Sarah sings in her soprano voice, I describe her voice as "liquid silver notes of perfection." However, even though her voice sounded lovely, it isn't suited to folk songs and folk singing.

I am definetely a fan of English/Irish/Scottish folk songs and have a fairly large collection of them, but this album will be one of those albums I rarely play.

Because she does have such a gorgous voice, it has the effect of making these songs sound, for lack of a better phrase, artificial and somewhat forced. I think her voice might be a little too trained and operatic, even though she is not an opera singer, for these kinds of songs.

In other words, I think her voice might be too good to sing such simple songs, which is not meant to cast aspersions on people who have lovely voices and sing folk songs. Examples of these would be the Angel of Riverdance, Katie McMahon and Connie Dover! Both of these womyn have high, lovely, voices but they don't sound as trained as Sarah does.

So I can't really reccomend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Distinct Voice Quality.......2005-02-25

There's a gallery of professional singing Sopranos today, and each has her own specific strengths, history of accomplishments, recognition and influence. The uniqueness that Sarah Brightman presents the listener and viewer is that of a totally dedicated artist who has expanded and refined her voice in an area that other Sopranos haven't - youthfulness, diction, control and width. Starting at an early age she succeeded and excelled in a variety of styles and genres. On this CD, with the simple piano accompaniment that enhances her distinctiveness, she's able to maintain the most melodious range, diction and duration. She enhances the meaning of the folklore (whether English or French) and the classics, as it has not been done before. The selection of music pieces offers and tests her voice skills exceptionally well. Any voice student and expert must not miss the opportunity to identify the voice features that Sarah Brightman's talent offers. Her voice uncovers Soprano skills that usually remain hidden.

5 out of 5 stars Best collection of violin playing ever made.......2007-04-12

I am a professional violinist and have long been an admirer of Michael Rabin. His technic is beyond concern. I am familiar with people involved in these recordings. Amazingly, many were single, unedited takes. If you ever buy a violin recording, these are the ones to get.

5 out of 5 stars I really can't add anything to the other reviews..........2007-01-07

...this collection is an absolute necessity to anyone enjoys violin music and a near necessity to anyone who enjoys classical music...what astounds me is the quality of many of the recordings...more often than not violin recordings seem to produce a sound that leaves the impression that you're listening from the back row in a large hall...most of Rabin's recordings, on the other hand, give the impression either he's right in the room with you or else you're in the front row at the concert.

5 out of 5 stars An essential item for any classical collection.......2006-04-20

Rabin is spectacular!!! Just listen to his rendition of Zigeunerwiesen, he has no equal for this piece - not even close! I have been waiting for the re-release of this set for over 5 years, asking EMI if they would ever consider it. My thanks to EMI for listening. This is a re-release they wont regret. I have a collection of classical violin by many artists, but there is something very special about these recordings by Michael Rabin. His interpretations and the gusto of his playing take your breath away.

I cannot imagine any collection of classical music without this set of CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Rabin was INCREDIBLE.......2006-04-14

I have to second Scott68. Rabin was one incredible violinist. I agree, the Paganini Caprices (age 15!) Wieniawski and others were never topped by anyone! This set is guaranteed to drop your jaw.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute To The 20th Century's Greatest Violinist.......2006-04-01

If you don't have these CD's get them, you won't be disappointed, especially if you love the violin as I do. If you're a Rabin fan too then this small investment is money well spent. A better set of recordings of violin classics couldn't be found anywhere. Rabin quite simply was the greatest violinist of the 20th century, rivalling, and in some ways surpassing the venerable Heifetz. He was also known for his phenomenal virtuosity and 'voluptuos' tone somewhat reminiscent of Perlman.

This boxed set includes many of the virtuoso pieces that made him famous as well as more reflective pieces like Bach. Listen to these and judge for yourselves what a truly great violinist was Rabin.

5 out of 5 stars Batiz dirige obras de Rodrigo.......2005-11-15

expresa. En esta grabaccion el maestro Batiz dirige
    tres orquestas:la Royal Philharmonic, London Symphony;
y Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico. Los
unicos conciertos que aqui no aparecen son: Concierto
para una Fiesta, y Concierto como un Divertimento.
    Una grabaccion de recomendaccion maxima...

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Rodrigo!.......2004-02-11

I had much of this material on vinyl, and it's great to have these packaged on 4 full budget-priced CDs. The sound is quite acceptable, although a little bright, which was common for early digital recordings from the 80's. But, they're otherwise clear and full. There are better recordings of the guitar concertos (which is a crowded field), but they hold up fairly well - and are better than Batiz' rerecordings of the some of the guitar concertos he did some 10 years ago on ASV.
The other concertos are quite nice as well. Distinctively Rodrigo-esque!
Anyone interested in this set will want to invest in Batiz' more recent survey with his Mexican State Orchestra of Rodrigo works.
    Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Blind Can Hear..........2003-02-13

This is an album dedicated to the works of one of the most prominent Spanish composers of the 20th Century. His music is luscious, melodic, with uncompromised energy and excitement. Rodrigo was blind and had a love affair with the Concerto form, and this is Batiz's dedication to the man and his many works in that form.

I too disagree with the reviewer who said the recording was muddy. I think it captures the music well, and all of the soloists come out as intended in the score. I think the balance and tone are wonderful. I hope that helps!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Rodrigo compendium........1999-09-20

This is great music, with great performances, on a very good recording. (I disagree with the other online reviewer--to me the soloists sound crisp and rich.)

2 out of 5 stars Rodrigo and Batiz deserve better than this,.......1998-10-30

As a long-time fan of Joaquin Rodrigo and a more recent fan of Enrique Batiz I eagerly looked forward to getting acquainted with some of Rodrigo's rarely heard pieces. Unfortunately thoses pieces will remain rarely heard due to the poor production quality of the CD. The sound was muddy and indistinct. Most of the tracks sound as if the microphone was under the stage. I had to strain to hear the guitar, harp, and flute soloists.
