Carlos Kanno, ex-leader of Japan's renowned Orchestra de la Luz, formed the Nettai Tropical Jazz Big Band in 1995 with the idea of adding some flavor from the young Japanese jazz Turks into the mix. Eighteen strong, with a four trumpet, three trombone, and four saxophone horn section, they are caught in full flight, covering nine extended "descargas" (jams) on self-penned titles and some from Tito Puente, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, and Tower of Power among others. As you might expect this band carries a lot of muscle, and even TOP's "Squib Cakes" has never sounded fatter or better, especially on the Latin tip that suffuses all the tracks on this CD. An excellent recording of a very live event, with top-flight jazz arrangements and soloists riding a funky Latin boogaloo rhythm section to the bank and back, this is an auspicious debut designed to be heard LOUDLY. --Derek Rath
