4 out of 5 stars Wanting to hear the sound of a balalaika!.......2005-10-18

I have not received my cd yet, but I was expecting to receive one with balalaika only, so I am already disappointed. In the samples, the orchestra is so predominate I cannot tell which is the balalaika. Thanks, Violet

5 out of 5 stars From Russia, with Strings.......2004-08-09

The Osipov Russian Folk Orchestra made this fine recording some four decades ago, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union were barely on speaking terms. I imagine that some of the people who bought this record found themselves on FBI or CIA observation lists. Still, it would have been worth it, for the sheer exuberance of the music alone. The performances are bold and exciting, tinged with a hint of danger, and the listener is carried away on a crest of winter sleigh rides through places like Moscow and Vladivostock. Sure, the orchestra was capitalizing on the popularity of Dr. Zhivago, but at least they were able to find an audience. There's a little bit of hiss, given the antiquated recording instruments of the time, but it isn't enough to distract from the music. In fact, it's barely audible. I understand that they have since released a remastered version of the disc, but I'm always suspicious of perfection. One other thing: the cover leads you to believe that this is solely a balalaika show, but that isn't quite the case. There is, in fact, a whole orchestra here, but it is used quite smartly. Those other instruments give the music the air of authenticity, and create a kind of old world mood, but it's the balalaikas that carry the day.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2004-07-15

This album is not only one of the finest technically, but also musically. It was recorded back in the early sixties with the finest equipment and the finest audio technique ever devised. This has to be one of the most enjoyable listening experiences the listener will ever experience, as is all of the Mercury Living Presence series. We are privilaged to have these great recordings re-made on CD, and this particular one has to be at the top of the list. It will challenge any other recording technique, and it will lift your spirits every time you listen to it!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing beats this for exuberance.......2000-02-06

The sound of massed balalaikas is a real treat, especially when recorded with as much vividness and realism as on this disc. The Osipov Folk Orchestra also consists of bass balalaikas, accordions, flutes, Vladimir Shepherd's Horns, and percussion and they produce quite a kaleidoscope of sound! I particularly enjoy the comedic Vladimir Shepherd's Horns, heard to their most humorous effect in the Tchaikovsky piece, which is guaranteed to make you smile. This recording uncannily conveys the impression of a live event. Of course, the performers deserve most of the credit for this. Their unanimity of attack and sheer exuberance are heartstopping. Even if you think you don't like Russian folk music, give this a try!

Fans of Anne-Sophie Mutter know what to expect of her. Her technique is dazzling, and she takes an individualistic, Romantic approach to whatever she plays --occasionally inundating the music with more weight than is necessary--and her tone is luminous and grand. This 2-CD set of all of Mozart's Violin Concerti and the fantastic Sinfonia Concertante K. 364 (wherein she's joined by violist Yuri Bashmet) exemplifies all of these traits. If you like your Mozart airy and delicate you've come to the wrong place; if you like some fine showy virtuosity in fast movements and long, lush statements in the slow movements, you'll be perfectly comfortable. And indeed the slow movements are slow--occasionally hypnotically so--but they're never less than stunningly played. K. 364 is ravishing, particularly in the two energetic outer movements, with Bashmet's gorgeous tone a real attraction. This is very sophisticated Mozart playing. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2007-06-21

I wil be brief. These remarable pieces are played beautifully and insightfully by Ms. Mutter. No Mozart worshiper should be without these recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical, Powerful, Moving Mozart.......2007-03-16

Every so often you find an almost perfect performance and recording that leaves you smiling and shaking your head in awe: Mutter Mozart -- The Violin Concertos and Sinfonia Concertante is definitely one of those.

Ms. Mutter's power, range, and stylistic sophistication are at their acme. She soars ethereally where it's required, sings sweetly in slow rhythms, and pushes forward like a commander where that's what's called for. The London Philharmonic is beautifully in concert with her every move and timing. Yuri Bashmet's viola in Sinfonia Concertante is equally sublime.

For those who first knew Ms. Mutter's Mozart playing when she was but a budding teen, it's fun to see how much her skill and interpretive abilities have expanded in 30 years. It's astonishing to see someone with that much experience can still appear quite young. And of course, there's the irony to appreciate of Ms. Mutter now being older than Mozart was at his death.

Above all this is a confident performance by players who know Mozart well, understand what they want to accomplish, and are in complete accord with what needs to be done. The bright optimism and energy of Mozart are beautifully displayed . . . reminding us with wonder of how his own life was often filled with problems even as he produced such astonishingly bright works one right after the other.

If you like Ms. Mutter and Mozart, I encourage you to purchase this two CD-set and the four CD-set, Mozart: The Violin Sonatas.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it if you love mozart and violin.......2007-01-03

I bought this CD set a couple of months back. I'm glad to to say that I've enjoyed it throughly so far. I also have a copy of the rather polished recording of Violin Concertos 3 and 5 that Mutter made with Karajan, and I find the new one seems to have greater energy and emotions. Both the set of recordings are to be cherished in their own right.

The Sinfonia Concertante is to die for! I've not heard a better recording, especially the Presto.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beutiful Mozart ever.......2006-12-22

I compared this recording with Manze, Grumiaux, and Perlman's recordings.
First, no. 1 and 2. are the outstading performance with gorgeous sound.
Regarding No. 3, I prefer her earlier recording to it in especially in first movement. But, 2nd and 3rd movement are really great and probably second to none.
No. 4 and No. 5 is also great.
Sinfonia Concertante, I bet nobody else can do better than Mutter and Bashmet.
My suggestion :
If you wanna background music --> Manze OK.
If you wanna more classical music --> Grumiaux
If you love sweetier sound --> Perlman
If you love song (I think this recording shows more operatic and more lirical aspects in Mozart musics than other recordings do) and really want to be absorbed into music --> Mutter !

5 out of 5 stars Mozart: The Violin Concertos.......2006-07-06

Mozart: The Violin Concertos~ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a stunning and amazing recording with brilliant Anne Sophie Mutter. She plays with such bravura, skill and ability that is rarely heard and the only one that I can think of right of hand sitting here typing this is Hillary Hahn, but there could one or two more that have slipped my mind. Mozart is in my humble opinion alone one of the greatest composers of all time and alongst with Wagner, Bach and Beethoven they are the elite of all compositions and are therefore in a league of their own. The complexity of Mozart's work is often deceptive. One hears it and one is struck by its seeming simplicity. However, take a look at the score and one suddenly realizes the complexity and the brilliance that is captured within the mind and spirit of Mozart and verily being a devout Christian at heart I can not help to think that God spent a few extra seconds on the likes of Mozart. Highly recommended without any reservations to connoisseurs of classical music as well as to ordinary listeners whom will surely appreciate the magnificent ability of Anne Sophie Mutter and the amazing compositions created by Mozart.

5 out of 5 stars The great Vocalise.......2007-03-10

It's very interesting to hear this beautiful piece on many versions and combinations of instruments, so we can compare them in a very easily way by playing only one cd.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2001-12-30

This is clearly one of the greatest melodies of all time, and it certainly deserves the unusual distinction of being the subject of this CD. The different interpretations are fascinating. Listen for the subtle differences in orchestration--it's like getting a master class on that topic as well as on song interpretation. The only disappointment is that Clara Rockmore's haunting Theramin version with Nadia Reisenberg at the piano is not included.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful example of truly great work.......2000-08-16

On this CD you can find different arrangements as well as just different performances of this truly great Rachmaninov's work. Do not be suspicious about how it is really possible to withstand something 13 times in a row! You will be surprised and glad that you have this CD! This work not just allows different interpretation - it allows different moods and emotions. One of the tracks is the actual Rachmaninov's recording - where he conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra. Brian Asawa is absolutely marvelous on the 5th track. Spivakov, who I really like, probably takes a bit too fast tempo, but intonation and phrasing are so beautiful! Playing late romantic music is sometimes very challenging in a sense, that you have to show all the emotions but at the same time you can not take it too far, especially Russian music. This CD gives the outstanding example of balanced understanding of music core. Every performance is distinct and prominent.

I can also recommend to listen to Rachmaninov own performance of his preludes - among 5 different versions I have his one is the best.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling to the ear!.......2000-05-15

Rachminoff clearly shows off his ingenious talent with the piece. A piece that has overwhelmed singers and listens with such passion that can easily be expressed with no words. This recording is one of the very best and it's great to relax to as well as use for a reference when singing this elegant masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Great playing, amazing music, unbalanced recording.......2005-10-24

My comment will only focus on the recording as I cannot agree more with other reviewers as far as interpretation and music are concerned.

The teldec engineers have focused on the violins and forgotten that a quartet is a balanced ensemble and thus viola and cello are not accompaniement. Their bias damages the final result and suppress the rich interplay Borodin has been renown for. For instance in the fugue of the second quartet last mvt, the cello is barely audible and all ears are on the violins. The result of this takes its toll when the reverberent acoustics saturates the microphones in some powerful zingers shooting.

It also makes the listening tiring as you have to extract the other instruments lines from the soloists... So 4 stars when it should have been a no brainer 5!

(listening was made on professional JBL studio monitors, Bryston amps and Linn source)

5 out of 5 stars All-star performance of some sadly neglected music.......2005-09-23

I am a huge fan of the Borodin quartet. I had heard Schubert's quintet performed by the Emerson Quartet, and after hearing the same piece performed by the Borodin Quartet, I was blown away by how overrated the Emerson ensemble is.
That Tchaikovsky's chamber music doesn't receive the fanfare it deserves is understandable; the composer's orchestral works are so widely acclaimed that it tends to cast a shadow over the rest of his oeuvre. However, these are worth a purchase for sure. Tchaikovsky was a master of music writing for strings, and this medium lets him show off his virtuosic side with more ease than the symphonic medium. My bias towards fugues predisposes me to the 2nd quartet and the Souvenir de Florence and their contrapuntal finales; but that is not to say they stand alone on this 2 disc set. Each of the Quartets, as well as the Souvenir de Florence, are filled with charming melodies, folk music overtones, and the driving, rhythmic and dynamic writing style typical of a composer so celebrated for these techniques. The set also includes the B-Flat quartet, a work without opus but nonetheless a nice addition.
The recording is impeccable, as are all of the Borodin's efforts on the Teldec label. If you find yourself interested in Tchaikovsky's chamberworks after listening to these little-known masterpieces, you should check out his Piano Trio, a monstrous piece at nearly 50 minutes in length but well worth your time.

This is a very fine recording. The music is very exciting and the selections are paced very well. Mr. Aram Khachaturian is excelent at bringing the local curtural color into his compositions. In spite of Soviet restrictions on a composers "politicaly correctness" the genius shows through.

If you like Prokofiev, you will find this one to be very much to your liking.

Recorded during live concert performances, Lang Lang's second Telarc release justifies all the positive buzz surrounding this young pianist's rapidly ascending international career. He brings plenty of finger power and long-lined drama to Rachmaninov's ubiquitous Third Concerto, yet takes plenty of time to let the lyrical, soaring tunes spin without an inkling of self-indulgence. He admirably adjusts the piano part to accompany when he doesn't bear the melodic burden, and he gets more expressive mileage from transitions than many pianists do. For once, the thicker, more difficult first movement cadenza doesn't sound unwieldy and elephantine. The piano is a little too prominent in the mix next to Temirkanov's sensitively detailed, flowing orchestral support. While Lang Lang has not fully internalized the quivering underbelly of Scriabin's passionate keyboard writing, his poised and secure readings of 10 Etudes still boast plenty of dynamism, idiomatic nuance, and roaring, Horowitz-like octaves. Watch this pianist! --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars First class.......2007-05-17

I can't understand the bad opinions about this extraordinary pianist and this pleasant CD. Even after so many versions of Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concert Lang Lang give us a new one, fresh and powerful. Scriabin Etudes also sound clean, passionate, great! The only strange thing is the audience laughing when the artist announces a chinese song as encore.

4 out of 5 stars Lang Lang - A stylish Virtuoso...or is he?.......2006-03-03

My opinion of Lang Lang is very complicated. He is a young virtuoso with impeccable clarity and technique. I have seen him live, and he performs very clearly and with refined pianism. His playing is clean and accurate, no question about it. However, the problem lies with Lang Lang's interpretation. He isn't mature enough to interpret music correctly. Many people know this and criticize him for it, and revere Yundi Li as an alternative. Lang Lang lacks the musical experience and maturity to properly interpret certain styles, and I hope he doesn't try to interpret late Beethoven or the Liszt sonata. That said, however, his interpretations of Russian music are much more fitting. Typically Russian music is more free-spirited and flamboyant than its German counterpart. While his Rachmaninoff is decently-interpreted, his Scriabin is worth mentioning.

Lang Lang interprets Scriabin like no other. There are good and bad things to this. He is so unsure of himself musically that his Scriabin etudes are mere guesswork. Compare his recordings to the great Scriabin legends of Sofronitsky, Horowitz, and even Kissin. Case in point, his uncertainty actually leads him to play Scriabin in a very unique and interesting style. He plays it schizophrenically, which may be appropriate - Scriabin, though brilliant, was crazy (hypochondria and synaesthesia being the smallest examples). Lang Lang's "guesswork" actually works out in these etudes, because they are young, showy pieces, so the schizophrenic, unsure interpretation works out nicely for him. However I think Lang Lang would poorly interpret late Scriabin as it is very mature and atonal.

If you are looking to purchase this CD, let me give you a good summary. The Rach Concerto 3 is well done, clean and accurate, but nothing spectacular: don't expect a 1951 Horowitz recording here, just a clean and accurate recording. The Scriabin etudes are fascinating to listen to and showcase a very interesting interpretation that surpringly works (his Op. 8/3 and 65/3 are unparalleled in my opinion).

Unlike a few others, I have no problems with sound quality. The sound is crystal clear, what I would expect from a modern recording like this. Good luck in your purchasing endeavours!

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE sound quality.......2005-10-24

I love Lang Lang and bought this CD specifically for that reason -- but I was very disappointed at the sound quality. Usually Telarc has great recordings, but this one was the worst I have ever heard. I was not able to finish listening to it.

What an awful way to showcase a major young talent.

1 out of 5 stars Oh dear.......2005-01-27

Unfortunately, the technical engineering of the live recording in Albert Hall is of such poor quality that it compares with recordings of 30-40 years ago. Despite Mr. Lang's artistry and that of Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, I am gravely disappointed by this purchase. By comparison with the Carnegie Hall concert and Deutsche Gramaphon's technical expertise, this really rates no stars at all.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of lunch money..........2005-01-24

Maybe its just me but the piano is out of tune badly enough that it should not have been recorded. I had to force myself to finish listening to the concerto and did not even bother with the rest. Sad piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound! Great Performance! Great Music!.......2006-06-06

As far as sound quality of classical cds go, you really have to pay attention to the fine print and here it's DDD. That makes all the difference as this recording is one of the best-sounding classical recordings I have ever heard and is currently the best classical cd, sound quality-wise, that I own. I'm sure the fact that this recording was made in the early 90s must have also helped but as far as this being a worthy cover of Rimsky-Korsakov's brilliant masterpiece is concerned, fear not as Yuri Temirkanov and the New York Philharmonic have done an excellent job here. Great sound quality and wonderful performances of a brilliant work of music make this very highly recommended indeed.

3 out of 5 stars A great conductor going through the motions.......2005-10-26

Every day an unknown number of new listeners is thrilled by first hearing the glittering Scheherazade, but to conductors it's as hackneyed as the 1812 Overture, unless...

The "unless" covers a lot of ways to invigorate this warhose. Stokowski applies lush gaudiness in his three readings, which can be thrilling. Reiner gave us astonishing orchestral virtuosity from the Chicago Sym. and one of Living Stereo's best recordings, a marvel almost fifty years on. beecham delivers a fresh, buoyant readding that comes close to being joyous (though the EMI recording is dated).

Temirkanov certainly has the potential to do something special with Scheherazade, but what we get instead is an all-around straighforward reading, good but not spectacular sound, and some nice expressive touches here and there. The NY Phil. doesn't sound that jazzed, either. Altogether, I had hoped for more.

5 out of 5 stars Beguiling, Atmospheric, Dramatic -- Marvelous Dynamic Range!.......2004-04-12

This is by my favorite from among many Scheherazades. I do not agree that the dynamic range is a problem. On the contrary, it is what CD's are all about. The technology in this wonderful recording conveys this favorite's musical and emotional scope, especially when enjoyed with good speakers in quiet surroundings or with earphones. This is the first time I have felt that a recording of this suite exploited all the possibilities, from the drama of the tales Scheherazade recounts each of 1001 nights to keep from being beheaded to the beguiling nature of Scheherazade herself.

I have loved the companion Russian Easter Ouverture since discovering classical music as a teenager. Again, this CD is the first recording I have heard that fully realizes its possibilities.

The acoustic is delectably atmospheric, and the microphone placement and mixing combine with it to convey the ambience of the great orchestra in personal concert for the fortunate listener.

I own a truckload of classical CD's. This is one of the favorites I hear again and again.

4 out of 5 stars MUSIC FOR THE SENSES.......2000-06-06

I first heard this recording on the radio, a few years back, then decided to buy the CD. The overall offect is quite pleasing - hypnotic at times - and Bernstein's orchestra, the NY Philharmonic, is captured in great form under Temirkanov. The playing is also first rate, the violin solo by Glenn Dicterow is well executed. I found the orchestral contrasts between soft and loud passages to be exaggerated and in general, the various sections lacking in continuity of purpose. Music for the senses, but also music that has to make sense, I mean musically. Phrasing is the key - as in the New World Symphony or the Symphonie fantastique. This is lovely, but the whole thing seems to lack in perspective. The RUSSIAN EASTER OVERTURE is very well done, great sound, à la Russe.

5 out of 5 stars The "Scheherazade" to beat!.......2000-01-27

My favorite version of "Scheherazade" was by Joel Pernea, but I don't think it's made it to CD. Never fear; this one is as powerful as I remember Pernea's being. Of course I haven't heard every "Scheherazade" out there, but this one's a little special, so go fot it.

If you've been looking for the version of Smetana's Moldau that all the Classical Radio stations play, THIS IS IT! Best version of Moldau on the market! I bought this in cassette tape version years ago but lost it and have been searching for it ever since. The Bolero is also awesome, (shades of Disney's original film Fantasia, the dinosaur story). If you like Classical music but are a novice like me, this is a great survey of varying styles by the best composers. Romeo and Juliet needs no introduction. It's fabulous.

Borodin was a dilettante in the very best sense of the word; he wrote this sprawling, complicated opera with its incredible melodic splendors in his spare time. Unfortunately, he never quite decided where he was going with it, and various other composers have tried assorted fixes to make it work dramatically. This version has a splendid cast singing an uncredited ("at the initiative of Artistic Director Valery Gergiev") cut-and-paste score-- with a handy three-page guide to who wrote or orchestrated what--that is missing some familiar moments but makes more dramatic sense. It's also resplendently sung by some of the finest voices from the glory days of the Kirov (right after the fall of Communism, just before the singers discovered Western contracts and pay scales), including Galina Gorchakova at her best, and it's tautly conducted by Gergiev. 5 out of 5 stars A Great Performance of a Powerful Work.......2006-10-19

Russian opera has many grand epic historical works in the repertoire, and after BORIS GODOUNOV, PRINCE IGOR may be the best known. As a matter of fact, if BORIS was not performed so regularly on operatic stages, chances are PRINCE IGOR would be staged more often. Some of its music is among classical music's most familiar: The Polovtsian Dances and overture are well known pieces in concert halls and are often included in recorded classical music compilations. Yet these familiar works are only part of the larger opera. There are beautiful arias and duets, powerful choral scenes, and challenging music that requires great vocal abilities. Many opera lovers only know a few of the opera's excerpts, but those familiar with the entire recorded work know it's a fascinating, moving, and exciting work.

One of the challenges of PRINCE IGOR is its length. It's over three hours long and it can have a tendency to be a bit lethargic. This recording shows this doesn't have to be the case. There are a number of recordings of this work, and in the past I have owned to others: The EMI recording with Boris Christoff and the Sony set under the direction of Tchiakarov. Both of these sets have wonderful attributes, but the Christoff set has cuts and the Sony set, while beautiful, is somewhat slow and tends to drag at points. This set, another great recording by the Kirov Opera under the direction of Valery Gergiev, seems like something that can actually work on stage. The pace is exciting and the musicianship superb. This may be due to the fact that this recording is based on the edition used by the Kirov so the performers are well versed in the music. The strongest voices are those of the four principals: Mikhail Kit as Igor, tenor Gegam Grigorian as Igor's son Vladimir, soprano Olga Borodina as the Polovtsian princess and love interest of Vladimir and Galina Gorchakova as Igor's wife Yaroslavna. While all the performers are admirable, I especially enjoyed Gorchakova's ability to have a beautiful yet melancholy sound to her voice as she sang a role of a woman fearing for the lives if her husband and son. Grigorian and Borodina's love duet is sumptuous. The deep voices necessary for Russian opera, especially for the role of Igor, are excellent. The orchestra is nearly perfect and the chorus, which has to be powerful one moment and plaintive the next, handles the challenges well. In short it's a vibrant and pleasurable work.

The liner notes are helpful too. PRINCE IGOR has a complicated history. Composing was Borodin's second job. By profession he was a chemistry professor. PRINCE IGOR is not bad for what was for all intents and purposes an avocation. Borodin died before completing the work so Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazounov completed the work based on Borodin's notes and sketches. Who did what and how much of the opera is what Borodin intended is the subject of great debate, but the performance notes on the edition explain it all, or at least some and includes a bibliography for those interested in further info.

4 out of 5 stars From a Veteran Prince Igor Listener.......2005-11-03

This version of Prince Igor has some fantastic perks, and some drawbacks. If you are new to this opera, buy the Tchakarov version (Sony, The Russian Opera) first. Then pick this up, and enjoy its advantages. If you are a veteran listener, buy this one.
The key problem with this version is with the singer who plays Igor. A strong, resonant basso is essential to Russian opera. In this case, Igor is virtually missing, his voice and interpretations are so weak. And yet, his character should be key to the opera. This Igor rushes the tempo and often doesn't take advantage of dramatic moments. He lacks resonance and depth. His projection is insufficient.
Galitsky's basso performance is variable. He does superbly in his duet with Yaroslavna. But later, he lacks depth and resonance, and doesn't take advantage of dramatic opportunities. Sometimes his voice is nasal.
Konchak's vibrato is too rapid, and clouds his voice. His low notes are weak.
Igor's son Vladimir has a fine voice, and uses it very expressively. I'd usually found this character to be bland, but not in this case.
Konchakovna's voice is occasionally so nasal that it is grating and painful to listen to, especially in her initial solo. Later, she improves, but her voice is too soft.
Yaroslavna is one of the crowning points of this recording. She has a truly lovely voice, and is very skilled and expressive. For veterans of this opera, her performance alone is worth buying this version.
But there are other reasons to buy it as well. The chorus is very strong, and has beautiful Slavic pronunciation. Excellent choirs are essential to Russian opera. The orchestra gives fresh, exuberant interpretations to the music, although occasionally at too fast a tempo. The recording quality is excellent.
I was very intrigued by the new sections of music included in this recording. Listen to them. What do you think?
The altered ending, which became a reiteration of the beginning, worked well for me. I was never happy with the original ending.
May I offer a request? Please, will someone make Ovlur's part into the gem that it is? I was raised on the Popovich version of Igor, by the Belgrade National Opera Orchestra. The director made Olvur's part into a piquant, deeply touching moment of light in the darkness of Igor's imprisonment under Konchak. Every conductor since then has rushed the part and ignored its possibilities.
Prince Igor is, quite honestly, my favorite piece of music. It introduced me to the rich, melodious, unique sounds of Russian music. It is more enticing than Boris Godunov, and is an excellent introduction to Russian opera.

2 out of 5 stars OK - but there are better so look for them!!.......2003-05-11

While this is a competent reading of the score -- there are certainly better recordings. Unfortunately the recording industry has allowed Gergiev to dominate the Russian Repetoire and he is not necessarily the best conductor for all operas.

There are 2 older recording from the Bolshoi released by Le Chant Du Monde under license from Melodiya which are far superior in conduction and voice. There is a 1952 with the great Alexander Pirogov as Glalinski, Andrei Ivanov as Igor and Mark Reisen as Kontchak. The director is Alexander Melik-Pachaiev -- one of the greatest conductor who ever conducted at the Bolshoi.

There is also a 1976 recording from the Bolshoi which has Mark Ermler conducting and has Artur Eisen as Galitski, and Alexander Vedernikov as Kontchak, and Ivan Petrov as Igov. It has a good set of women's voice in the great Tougarinova as Jaroslavna.

Frankly I prefer either of these 2 recordings to Gergiev. While they may be digitally remastered there is a sumptuousness and authority in voice and direction which Gergiev can't match. To me Gergiev it must too driven a conductor who wants to dominate the score and this gives a hard edge to his work.

5 out of 5 stars There's More Than the Polovetsian Dances.......2002-01-23

If you've always strongly suspected that there must be more good music in Borodin's unfinished opera Prince Igor than just the Polovetsian Dances, you're right. This excellent performance, brillantly recorded in St. Petersburg's famous Mariinsky Theater, home of the Kirov State Opera, conducted by Valery Gergiev, proves this resoundingly. Dramatically, this opera (the libretto, that is) is a mess. It was left unfinished by Borodin, whose career in chemistry kept him too busy. But musically, it's full of magnificient stuff which should be heard much more often!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent version of this opera.......2000-05-05

Valery Gergiev's new re-working of Prince Igor does indeed make much more sense than the conventional version, dramatically and musically, and, beyond that, it is an excellent performance. There may be some parts "missing" from this version, but there are also some new parts which have been excluded from most performances. Most notable is Igor's Monologue, which takes place in the final Polovstvian act. Also, there are two additions to the finale of the Yaroslavna act.

The principals in the opera are universally excellent. Galina Gorchakova has often been unjustly criticized, but she truly has one of the most beautiful voices in the modern opera world. One of the most touching moments in this recording is the end of her arioso, which she performs beautifully in one breath--and ON PITCH, which is something she is often criticized for, particularly when she is singing softly as she is here. True, she can have pitch problems, as in her lament in the last act, but it's a small price to pay for her voice itself, and she always manages to get back on pitch when she goes flat. She is a standout in the cast, as are Olga Borodina as Konchakovna and the singers who portray Igor and Yaroslavna's brother Vladimir.

As for the sound quality, someone earlier said that it sounded very good for being recorded live, and I agree. Actually, I didn't know it WAS recorded live until I read that review, and I'm still not sure. It certainly doesn't sound like it, and I can't find anything in the booklet that says that it was. Either way, the recording quality is excellent.

The conducting is also admirable, although Gergiev tends to rush at points. For example, during Yaroslavna's lament, there is a very beautiful section in the middle ("Ach, ty veter, veter bunyi") that Gergiev flies through.
