"Falling in Love" is a classic!.......2007-07-04
Primitive Love CD.......2006-11-05
This Album Misses the Mark.......2005-10-22
The overall problem I have with this album is that I really don't get a good sense for the Latin influence on this album. Perhaps I am being hard on the Miami Sound Machine because it's quite possible that they didn't intend to make an English Speaking album with a Latin influence. However, even if "Primitive Love" was an album done by a non-crossover artist, I think I would still be quite disappointed with this album. I found this album to be reminiscent of early 80s pop with plenty of synthetic "early 80s" style music as a major element.
I also must admit that I am not a huge Gloria Estefan fan. Today the term "Diva" is used to describe a great female vocalist. While I do think Estefan does an admirable job on vocals, outside of a couple of songs ("Words Get in the Way" and "Surrender Paradise") - there really isn't much that makes me consider Estefan a true "Diva". And while I'm still not a fan, I think the argument can certainly be made that Estefan's later work may have put her into the "Diva" category. It's just that I don't feel that this album contributes to help her elevate to that level.
I must admit, looking at the timeframe of the release of "Primitive Love", the success of this album really surprises me. It was in the mid-1980s, that the pop music landscape was beginning to move to a more "natural" guitar-laden sound. Many artists that recorded Synth-Pop songs in the mid 1980s soon began to struggle maintaining commercial success in this timeframe. Yet, somehow the Miami Sound Machine did manage to succeed and overcome this. The only reason I can think of is that CBS Records was smart in how they released the singles - they focused on the singles that did not seem to fit the early 1980s mold.
The song that propelled the Miami Sound Machine to pop stars would be the song "Conga". When this was released as a single, I wasn't too impressed with this song. Sometimes a song will grow on me the more I listen to it. Unfortunately this was not the case with "Conga". Yes this song has a Latin influence, but to me it really doesn't capture me. I guess the bottom line is I feel that this is an overrated track.
As for the other singles that were released I actually found them much more enjoyable. "Bad Boy" is probably my favorite of these tracks. I wouldn't say that "Bad Boy" is a total Latin song. In this song, I hear Latin elements mixed with some conventional pop elements. I happen to like the way that the horns are used in this song. I also think that that there is some creative use of percussion and guitar work in this song. "Words Get in the Way" is one of the tracks where I do think Gloria Estefan's vocals dominate the song. This is the one song on the album written by Gloria Estefan - and it's really well-written. The song deals with a woman singing about the end of a long-term relationship. This is a soft melody - not much of a Latin influence and it's really carried by the vocals. Vocals also play a nice role on "Falling in Love". This song has more of a conventional pop-feel. On this particular song it isn't really Estefan's vocals, but some of the outstanding background vocal harmonies on the chorus that give this song a good feel.
The two worst songs on the collection happen to be the first two songs. "Body to Body" is one of those songs that has an early 1980s feel. However, it's not even a good early 80s song - it is very synthesizer-heavy and way overmixed. I also didn't hear much of a Latin influence in that song. While the next song, "Primitive Love" has a slight Latin influence, I still found this another song with an early 80s feel that was overmixed. The bottom line is that the title-track isn't a very good song either.
There are some other songs with an early 80s feel that are better. "Mucho Money" is also a song with an early 80s feel. "Mucho Money" also does a better job at integrating the Latin influence with the 80s sound. "Movies" is a song that has less of a Latin feel, but still maintains that 80s influence. The chorus almost reminds me a bit of Dan Hartman's "Instant Replay". Next to "Bad Boy", perhaps the best track on this collection is "Surrender Paradise". In a way, this song almost has more of a South Pacific feel to it. Yes there is a Synthesizer element in this slow song, but this is one of the tracks whether Estefan's voice really shines. I'm surprised this song didn't get more airplay - it is very good.
Overall, the poor early 80s style music and not the depth of the Latin influence were too much for me to overcome. This album has its moments, but overall is a disappointing.

BODY TO BODY
A song that I could listen to, but not constantly.
PRIMITIVE LOVE
This is much better than Body To Body. Great arrangements, great vocals. It's just great all around.
WORDS GET IN THE WAY
The first single from the album. This song is what made the band famous and is one of my favorites. The song is also my mother's favorite. This one just take me back to my childhood days.
BAD BOY
The second single from the album. I love this one because of it's catchy lyrics, it's catchy harmonies and melodies, and it's catchy beats and arrangements. This one should sound familiar to everyone if you all saw the hit film, Three Men And A Baby.
FALLING IN LOVE (UH-OH)
The third single from the album. This yet another one of my absolute favorites. I can't turn on off this album without listening to this song.
CONGA
The fourth and final single from the album. This song will remain a classic song for all eternity. It has been doing so ever since its release. It has appeared in many films over the years, but the only movie I know this song appeared in was The Birdcage.
MUCHO MONEY
I get a kick out of this one because of it's lyrics and it's sound. My favorite part of the song is when you hear Gloria sing, 'E-bah, E-bah, E-bah'!
YOU MADE A FOOL OF ME
I love this one because of how soothing it sounds.
MOVIES
Not bad.
SURRENDER PARADISE
Not bad.
This is one of the best albums ever made and if you are a Gloria fan, then you should have this album.

After several albums as the featured singer in the Miami Sound Machine, Gloria Estefan finally stepped up to top billing on Let It Loose, and her coming-out party became a major success. The album features no fewer than four Top 10 singles, including the hot Latino club grooves of "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" and "1-2-3," and the sweet, affecting ballads "Anything for You" and "Can't Stay Away from You." By the time of the album's release in 1987, Estefan had not yet grown into the assured and charismatic singer she would become. And some of the songs here bear the cheesy production techniques of their time. Overall, however, Let It Loose shows an artist beginning to assert herself with considerable charm and élan. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

BETCHA SAY THAT
This one of the songs that I favor from this album. It's lyrics are amazing and the sounds it really catchy.
LET IT LOOSE
A pretty good dance song.
CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM YOU
The first single from the band. Another one of my favorites. She can't stay away from her ex-boyfriend, while I can't get enough of this song.
GIVE IT UP
Not a favorite.
SURRENDER
Okay.
RHYTHM IS GONNA GET YOU
The second single from the album. Another incredible classic. The beat is amazing and the song will remain an undestroyable classic.

ANYTHING FOR YOU
The fourth and final single from the album. Not as great.
This is a pretty good album, but I don't favor it too much as I hoped I would, but it's still worth the money you're willing to pay.

Simple pop music, plain and simple!.......2005-05-30
It isn't really appropriate to deem this album as the first to feature all-original recordings because most of the material had previously appeared on three of the four LPs the group recorded for the Miami-based CBS Discos International. The only original song written for this LP is Enrique E. García's "Prisoner of Love"! Seven of the ten songs originally appeared on the group's 1983 LP "A toda máquina", "OK" first appeared in Spanish on the 1982 LP "Rio", and "I Need Your Love" first appeared as "Regresa a mí" on the 1980 LP "Miami Sound Machine."
Depending on your point of view, the English versions of these songs are either better, equal to, or of a vastly different quality than the original Spanish version! This is what makes it an interesting experience for me when I listen to this, as I find myself constantly making comparisons between the two versions of one song.
1. Dr. Beat (originally on "A toda máquina")
-A song employing a lot of what was to come with "Conga" a year later.
2. Prisoner of Love
-The only original tune written for this LP. It's a lot of fun to listen to, and not smacking too much of sound from the early 80s.
3. OK
-First released in Spanish on 1982's "Rio." Somehow Gloria Estefan's Spanish lyrics that she wrote for the "Rio" version seem so plain and therefore make the song sound that way. But when she sings Wesley B. Wright's original lyrics, she sounds more free with her interpretation. And some of Wright's lyrics are a little unique, which makes this version more interesting for me to listen to to.
4. Love me (originally "Entrégate" on "A toda máquina")
-Some of the lyrics are essentially the same for both English and Spanish versions, but this version doesn't rely too heavily on brass instrumentation as the Spanish does. A simple ballad, but this version is a little more stripped down, and I prefer this one.
5. Orange Express (originally "A toda máquina" on "A toda máquina")
-For the life of me, I can't figure out what possessed Wesley B. Wright to choose "Orange Express" as such a title for this English version of "A toda máquina", as it has nothing to do with what the lyrics are all about! I actually like both versions, but they're vastly different from each other; the Spanish version simply encourages people to get up and enjoy a party that's going on, one which you'll never forget once it finishes ("A toda máquina, vas a divertirte. A toda máquina, vamos a bailar") while Wright's English version relies so heavily on philosophy and striving for positive outcomes in life, or at least that what it seems like to me. This is one of my favourite tracks from the album, in English or Spanish.
6. I Need A Man (originally from "A toda máquina")
-An OK song for me. Nothing more, nothing less.
7. Eyes of Innocence (originally "Los ojos del amor" from "A toda máquina")
-The lyrics for both versions are pretty much express the same things, but the instrumental mixes for both songs are slightly different at the start, in between verses and at the end. Both versions are fun to listen to.
8. When Someone Comes Into Your Life (originally "Qué triste es volver a empezar" from "A toda máquina")
-Another of the ballads that Gloria Estefan is famous for writing and singing, but the Spanish version (written with Emilio Estefan) seems to depict the heroine as holding a lot of unpleasant feelings regarding the breakup of her relationship, while the English version depicts the heroine as someone who holds no grudges over what has happened, and encourages her ex to make sure he finds someone who loves him just as much. Gloria wrote the English version herself, and she sings this version with much more conviction, in my opinion.
9. I Need Your Love (originally "Regresa a mí" from 1980's "Miami Sound Machine")
-This was the very first track I ever listened to from this album when I first bought it. I had hoped that there would be an English version of "Regresa a mí" somewhere out there, and just by looking at the song titles at the back of the CD, I wondered if this would be it. Sure enough, it was! Enrique García's lyrics are far superior to the ones he wrote in Spanish, and Gloria Estefan sings this song with much more emotion and feeling than she does with "Regresa a mí." Not to say that I didn't like that song when I first heard it (in fact I do like it a lot), but somehow to me this sounds better. The same instrumental track is used for both English and Spanish versions.
10. Do You Want To Dance (originally "Comunicación" from "A toda máquina")
-Here's an example of two very different sets of lyrics for an English and Spanish version of a song using the same instrumental track. I'm not saying the English version is bad, but here it's just a simple song getting people to get up and dance. The Spanish version "Comunicación" was about how people use two different languages to get their points across to others, and sometimes getting others upset when we do! The English version uses very little crowd sound effects, but in between the verses for the Spanish version, the band members talk to each other in sentences using both languages and the reactions elicited from each other are quite funny to hear, particularly towards the end of the song. So although "Do You Want To Dance" is just okay, I prefer its Spanish counterpart.
All in all, I would recommend this CD to anyone who was interested in listening to Miami Sound Machine. It's a lot of fun and it's just simple pop music, plain and simple, as I mentioned in the title! But one should really study the comparisons between the English and Spanish versions of the songs if one understands and speaks both languages.
One should also note that for CBS Discos International, not all of the four records that Miami Sound Machine released before "Eyes of Innocence" were exclusively in Spanish. Only 1981's "Otra vez" and "Rio" from 1982 are done completely in Spanish while 1980's "Miami Sound Machine" and 1983's "A toda máquina" (which first contained "Dr. Beat" and "I Need A Man")have tracks in English.

2. "Prisoner of Love" 10/10
3. "Okay" 10/10
4. "Love Me" 10/10
5. "Orange Express" 8/10
6. "I Need a Man" 9.5/10
7. "Eyes of Innocence" 8/10
8. "When Someone Comes Into Your Life" 10/10
9. "I Need Your Love" 10/10
10. "Do You Wanna Dance?" 8/10
Gloria and the Miami Sound Machines' debut album is a good, solid album Dance-Pop and Adult Contemporary/Soft Rock ballads. The album shows some hints of what was to come musically. I thought overall the album is good and features Gloria's beautiful, expressive vocals. But hey, nine outta ten ain't bad. The lyrics are also good. Gloria is an excellent songwriter! A good album of catchy Dance-Pop such as "Dr. Beat" & "Prisoner of Love" and romantic love songs such as "Okay", "When Someone Comes Into Your Life" and "I Need Your Love". My favourite songs here are "Prisoner of Love", "Dr. Beat", "I Need a Man", "Okay", "Love Me", all of the tracks, excluding track 5, "Orange Express." Overall rating: 4.5 Stars. Recommended to any Dance-Pop fan.

DR. BEAT
The first single from the album. I don't know for show, but it seems like this song is the only single from the album. This is a great song. It's not a song I could listen to constantly, but if it were to be played on the radio, I would not turn it off. If I were to just listen to the song from this album, I would not turn it off.
PRISONER OF LOVE
If this was not released as a single, then it would have been perfect to release it as a single, because this is an incredible song.

The biggest party record of the past twelve months has just got even bigger! Following the release of In My Arms is the mighty 'Doctor Pressure'. An awesome bootleg mash up of Mylo's anthem 'Drop The Pressure' and Miami Sound Machine's 'Doctor Beat'. Originally spliced together by two cheeky chaps Phil N Dog, and with Gloria Estefan and the Miami crew giving a thumbs up, it has now been given a re-jig by Mylo himself. Title track backed by the Dirty Radio Edit and Dirty Club Mix of 'Doctor Pressure' and Club Mix, Rex The Dog Remix and Stanton Warriors Edit of 'Drop The Pressure'. Sony. 2005.Customer Reviews:

It reminds me of the good remixes we had in Europe in the eighties: TOM's DINER by DNA or P4F with a mix of P.Machinery with Duran Duran's NOTORIOUS.
It's a track you can play at a party and you can be sure that everybody will be on the dancefloor at the second they hear the bass line.
