David Daniels seems to be the current leader of the opera world's March of the Falsettos--and with good reason: he's one of the first countertenors with enough beef in his voice to sound convincing in the heroic castrato roles of Handel's operas. His first solo disc is a collection of arias from just those roles--and an impressive debut it is. Daniels has the solid coloratura technique a Handel singer needs and a quick, narrow vibrato that can blend with Baroque instruments without alienating traditional opera buffs. (In fact, he sometimes sounds surprisingly like Marilyn Horne, one of his coaches.) Best of all, he has a musicality and dramatic sense that save the laments and slow serenades from dullness and the bravura showpieces from empty virtuoso display. The performances aren't flawless: Norrington's tempos are occasionally too quick for comfort (Daniels's and the listener's), and Daniels's vibrato sometimes spreads unattractively at the top of his range. He's at his best in the low alto roles that Handel wrote for the great castrato Il Senesino, such as the title roles in Giulio Cesare and Orlando. Let's hope we get to hear him in complete recordings of these operas soon. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
A truly amazing artist.......2007-06-21
David Daniels is one of the finest singers alive. I heard him recently in the Met's Julius Caesar and was overwhelmed with his performance. He not only has a truly beautiful voice, he is a complete artist, both emotionally and technically. This recording does him justice, and the music is some of Handel's finest. We are very lucky to have Mr. Daniels.
About time I said how good this recording is!.......2006-10-02
I've had this CD for a few years now and it is one that I often play. David Daniels is a great singer and his interpretations of Handel's arias are sublime. He is one of the best countertenors currently working in the world and he has few peers - Andreas Scholl, Bian Asawa, Derek Lee Ragin, Daniel Taylor, Robin Blaze, Lawrence Zazzo, Philippe Jaroussky, Gérard Lesne, Bejun Mehta and, of course, James Bowman are his only serious rivals.
This collection is well selected and it includes popular arias as well as a few less well known ones.
The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment is in magnificent form and Sir Roger Norrington gets magic from the various sections of the orchestra - particularly the Baroque bassoons in "Scherza infida".
This album is both a showcase for the singer and the orchestra. It is vastly superior to most Handel opera aria collections.
I unreservedly recommend this superb disc to all music lovers.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-06-24
David Daniels has devised this program so that it provided a view of Handel at the most significant stages in his London career as an opera composer. With his spectacular debut in England with 'Rinaldo'(1711), he established his ability to compose for the stage, and immediately followed it with 3 masterpieces: 'Tamerlano' and 'Guilio Cesare in Egitto', both from 1724, and 'Rodelinda' the next year. The unique 'Serse' (1738)is from the twilight of his operatic career, while 'Ariodante' shows a time when Handel and his London company was having difficulty competing with the rival Opera of the Nobility sponsored by the Prince of Wales.
Handel's greatest contribution to operatic history is his ability to rise above the sterertypical in his characters, endowing them with a total humanity by allowing them to experience the entire emotional gamut throught a variety of arias and recitatives. Moreover, David Daniels , being one of the finest interpreters of Handel is aware of the need not to be so blinded by the purity of the musical line as to forget what he is singing about. In fact, Handel often shaped the melodic line according to the degree a particular word was to be stressed. Handel was very aware of new devlopments, and styles and attitudes of his time, without ever betraying his own musical personality.
To my mind, Daniels is the consummate Handelian singer, and it is probably this music that he performs best! His delivery is highly dramatic as it should be, his diction absolutely flawless, his tone quality strong and sonorous; in short he is one good singer! It is indeed a very fine disc, not only because of the line-up but also because all arias are sung extremely well by him. I found myself focusing on his selection from "Serse": "Ombra mai fu". He sings this so much more emotionally and endows it with his own unique style. It's so well-done!!! My other favorite is from "Rinaldo": Venti, turbini". This displays his very skillful vocal technique in addition to his excellent diction. I really think he is the leading AMERICAN countertenor.
Stellar Performance and a Sign of the Greatness to Come.......2004-08-10
It is hard to imagine that there could be a finer recital disc of Handel's arias than this one reflecting the exquisite taste and powerful talent of David Daniels...unless of course, you count his splendid follow-up disc of Handel's lesser known oratorio arias released in 2002 (also strongly recommended). But the focus in this 1998 release is the rich music within six of Handel's best-known operas. Now nearly six years after its release, this recording not only holds up beautifully as an introduction to his prodigious talent, but also demonstrates his keen sense of adventure when his voice was at its most pure and unfettered.
Daniels' coloratura technique is amazingly seasoned even at this point of his career, and he approaches each aria in a singular fashion with that incredibly flexible legato that is literally breathtaking. Compare the impressive runs he employs on his rendition of "A dispitto" from "Tamerlano" to his seductive and sonorous tones on "Aure, deh, per pietà" from "Giulio Cesare in Egritto", and you get an idea of the range of emotion and technique of which Daniels is capable. Listening to the two arias from "Rodelinda" will make you recognize how over the course of twelve minutes, he has shown the two distinct sides of Bertarido - the mournful, dejected husband who goes unrecognized in "Pompe van di morte...Dove Sei?" and his enemy's savior at the end with "Vivi, tiranno".
The two arias from "Rinaldo", are also beautifully performed. Six years later, one can appreciate these versions within the context of Daniels' career, as he later recorded the title role in the famous 2000 recital recording of the opera with Cecilia Bartoli and yet again in the 2001 David Alden staging of the opera captured recently on DVD. I recommend getting your hands on all three and comparing the performances, as all are wonderful but quite different. Personally I think his voice ripened to just the right timbre in the Alden-staged version, especially during the opera's centerpiece, "Cara sposa, amante cara". Of all the stellar selections, it is really difficult to pick just one as a favorite, but his version of "E vivo ancora....Scherza infida" from "Ariodante" is especially moving in the way he sings of his plight in being humiliated by an unfaithful woman. Written for a castrato named Carestini in 1735, it is a sublime piece made all the more moving by the warm, round tones Daniels brings to it.
Sir Roger Norrington and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment provide able accompaniment on period instruments, never intrusive or jarring to the ears. It is easy to tell from this recording why Daniels received so much hype for bringing the countertenor voice to the mainstream and why his career has been so meteoric since the release of this disc. Now you can see that it was more than hype...David Daniels is the real thing.

Customer Reviews:
A fab collection of the loveliest soprano voice ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1.......2005-12-23
First off this two cd set is for the price of one, that is always great.Montserrat caballe is the star of this cdset, and she demonstrates all that is beautiful in singing,on ever track. Her ave maria from othello is included here.It is one of the best performed arias by caballe ever, she ends it with a heavenly piano top note. Also included is her magical casta diva from norma.Caballe sings all these arias with her legendary sound and breath control. On this set there are plenty of examples of long sustained notes, seemless legato, glorious high notes, and magically floated soft notes.Check out the cover to,there are some great photos of Caballe in opera costumes. These cds have great sound, and play for over two hours, too.
LA SUPERBA!.......2005-11-22
Montserrat Caballe is an amazing person and an amazing singer. In my opinion she has a more beautiful voice than Maria Callas. The high notes she reaches are just fantastic! Her Sempre Libera is the best ever! Her Ave Maria is stunning and her Vissi D arte is really moving. Her voice is so beautiful, it's as if it's an angels voice coming from her.
Madame Caballé is great!!!.......2003-04-06
This collection of Caballé's recordings is fantastic! Her soprano is the most beautiful that has been recorded. L. Price, Tebaldi, Ponselle, and a few others have gorgeous voices, but can any of those voices compare with Caballé's? Caballé's singing throughout is of the highest standard. Her "Ave Maria" is spectacular. "Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore" has never sounded more beautiful. I love her "Non so le tetre immagini". Such beautiful singing does not come any better than this. Her "Caro nome" is disappointing. She is clearly not suited to this aria. "Inflammatus et accensus" is glorious. The later recordings are nice, but they are not the best Caballé has committed to disc. "Il est doux, il est bon" betrays a slight wobble in her otherwise still beautiful voice. "Dopo l'oscuro nembo" features very respectable soft singing from Caballé. This version does not do justice to Bellini's exquisite orchestration. For a version that does, check out Opera Rara's "The Collection: Volume 2". That version features competent singing from an inferior-voiced soprano, but the orchestra is ravishing. The one reviewer who mentioned the aria from "I Vespri Siciliani" as having "fioriture effects Berio could sign on to" is incorrect. The aria included here is not "Mercè, dilette amiche". That aria is more famous and much more florid than the aria included in this collection, "Arrigo, parli a un core". By the way, Caballé performs this aria ravishingly well. This is a superb testament to one of the all-time greats in opera.
Amazing collection!.......2003-04-05
I will write this review objectively, but I will not avoid praising Caballé when praise is due.
First off, this compilation is amazing! I have always thrilled to hearing Caballé's voice and this compilation is no different. I am amazed at Caballé's instrument; such extraordinary purity combined with great power! Even when she sings pianissimo, she can be clearly heard! Her voice literally fills up the room. These arias really show off her remarkable voice. Of special note is her rendition of the hauntingly beautiful "Non so le tetre immagini". Amazing! Her "D'amor sull'ali rosee" is exquisite, but she sings it too softly. Her trill is quite weak. Voices like hers don't respond well to being forced to trill. The tracks from the 1990's show off the remarkable preservation of her voice. The voice retains its purity and beautiful timbre, but is now heavier and darker. "Sempre libera" is not that good. Her coloratura is not up to par with Verdi's demands and she cannot hit the high E-flat at the end. However, she sings the main part of Violetta's aria very well, with supple, gorgeous tone and ravishing pianissimos. "Ah! non credea mirarti" is ravishing, but it is missing its energetic cabaletta. Presumably, it was cut because Caballé could not deal with the coloratura. Caballé's legato lines in this aria are superb. Her version of the "Lucrezia Borgia" Prologue is masterful. Elizabeth's last aria from "Roberto Devereux" is noble and touching. She is not quite Sills, but that aria benefits from a spinto voice instead of a soubrette one. Her aristocratic phrasing is very well used throughout the selections, with a few exceptions. Her "Willow Song" is beautiful, first time on CD. However, she fails to completely show Desdemona's despair. Some parts were good, but the whole thing failed to touch the heart. Her phrasing here is too indulgent. I have to say that I prefer Sutherland's touching version on her "The Art of the Prima Donna" recording. However, I loved "Ave Maria". Caballé sounds most beautiful when singing softly and this selection really shows her in the best light. Her cadenzas are intoxicatingly beautiful. "Caro nome" is not really her aria. The coloratura is suspect and some of the staccati are replaced with upward flourishes. She avoids the last short passage of staccati. Her phrasing in this aria is way too indulgent and she really fails to suggest Gilda's innocence. Even Sutherland is better at portraying Gilda's girlish qualities. Her "Armida" aria has some nice coloratura. She does the runs really well and is fearless in the triplet passages. For some reason, she does not sing the second "fronde" in the first line of the third stanza nor does she sing the last line of this stanza, "i muti abitator". She also does not sing the last line of the fifth stanza, "il tempo vorator". Caballé's first recorded version of "Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore" is included here. This just may be the most beautiful version of this aria ever recorded. It certainly is Caballé's best version of the aria. The climax is handled in one breath by Caballé. She diminuendos the big high note twice in the same breath. Amazing! The rolling of the "r" in "Signor" after the last diminuendo is quite nasal and reminds us that the sound we are hearing is coming from a human throat. It also shows that these diminuendos are natural and not studio produced. She infuses Tosca's aria with real feeling and piety. The compilation ends with a knockout reading of "Arrigo, parli a un core". Caballé is at her best in this aria. She sings softly to stunning effect. This version may be the most beautiful of this particular aria ever recorded. RCA has done Caballé justice with this wonderful collection. Caballé is truly a remarkable artist with a million-dollar voice. Brava!
Cannot be called an "ultimate" collection.......2003-02-05
This is a prime example of the a major recording label being fickle with the goods, in order to force you to continue buying other recitals and full-length studio recordings. Of course, any Caballe fan would already want to own those other recordings anyway, so the point is moot.
Other reviewers here have cried out against the exclusion of one of her most essential and artistic roles, Imogene from Il Pirata. I would like to emphatically express the same. In fact, I would even have settled for the exclusion of Casta Diva, in favor of Col Sorriso di Innocenza.
Some other stellar recordings not represented her are the Sleepwalking Scene from MacBeth, and Pace, Pace Mio Dio from La Forza del Destino. Also worth mentioning is her O Patria Mia from Aida. She might not be Leontyne Price or Martina Arroyo, but she gives a superb reading of this wonderful aria.
Of course, brevity does require some editing- a true "Ultimate" Caballe collection would span four or five CDs, at least- but to include late-career and less-than-best selections at the expense of others is a crime.
Perhaps the major Opera labels should start letting fans put together the track lists for these "best of" collections! We could do a much better job.

Definitely not worth the 5 star reviews.......2006-10-27
Come on folks! If you add five star positive reviews for just about anything you listen too then the difference between good and bad will be lost. I was very disappointed with this album and also didn't find Pausini to be as good as some of the reviwers have claimed her to be. My suggestion is that you listen to the music first and then order it if you like it, but don't get it based on good reviews alone, like I did!
Incancellabile.......2006-04-01
Music comes and goes, today you hear a song that is a hit, tomorrow you don't remember it anymore. That is the difference between this particular cd and all the rest. I have been a fan of Laura for about 6 years now and I have been through several phases in my life but always, always this cd remains my favorite. Why? Laura has a refreshing voice, the songs on this cd are truly priceless, and unexplainable, you'd have to listen to them to understand, for no words anyone writes on this page can truly describe what you will experience with this cd. Everyone needs a form of inspiration, a way to get to know ourselves inside, this cd allows you to travel into your own heart even when you cannot understand the words! This cd will be a journey for whoever chooses to embark on it. My favorite song? Number 3 "Incancellabile" much like this cd = "Unforgettable"
All Choked up..........2005-09-04
I don't think it is often that a man will let his emotions be exposed to the world, especially when it comes to music, but I can tell you this is one of the most listened to CDs in my collection (and I have thousands!).
When I listen to this CD I am actually brought to the point of being emotionally choked up. I don't know what causes it, other than perhaps the fact that Laura can reach in and touch you in a place that instantly releases such a flood of feelings and emotions it is actually overwhelming.
The quality of her voice is unbelievable. Even though I am Italian American and my Italian is marginal, at best, I seem to understand every word she is singing. They say that you can understand any language with your heart if you listen closely enough. If you do not buy this CD, than you are not really looking for a GREAT CD. Buy it and I believe that you will listen to it over and over again and never tire of it. My wife is Latin and we also have several of Laura's CD is Spanish, which are equally fantastic, but this is my absolute favorite.
A dark room, a glass of good red wine, and this CD and life truly does not get any better!
Laura il mio idolo.......2003-11-01
Yes, i'm italian and i've been a huge fan of Laura Pausini for 8 years. I have all of her albums. But I have to say that this one is a classic.Laura has an amazing voice...actually I won't even be able to describe it..she truly has a gift from God..Her song ahve helped through a lot of hard times during the years. You can really relate to all of her songs and she makes each and every one of them so special and unique. My favorite on this album is Due innamorati come noi.Gorgeous song about two people in love. She's an amazing person inside and out. I will continue listening to all of her work because everything she does is wonderful.Enjoy!
Buon ascolto!
I just love it!.......2003-07-11
I really like this record.. On this album Laura has been part of writing process which I think is a really good thing. She has also written Il mondo che vorrei all by herself. There's also the song which she has dedicated to her mother: Mi dispiace. This cd was actually the very first one which didn't include any song that I haven't liked. I really like Laura's voice and music. And like I said already I love all the songs of this album, but I think the songs which I really do like to listen are: Ascolta il tuo cuore, Angeli nel blu, 2 innamorati come noi, Un giorno senza te and of course Il mondo che vorrei.
Un grazie di cuore a Laura per questo disco!!

Customer Reviews:
Glorious Italian Renaissance Reissue.......2006-04-14
Really happy to have found and purchased this reissue on Sony classical of "Gesualdo- highlights of his Madrigals, Galliards, Canzonettas". Features beautiful remastered performances in the early opera style(Opera was born in the mid to late Renaissance), with string instrumental interludes. May seem somewhat "sedate" to modern early music listeners, but I find it adds to it's charm- perfect background music for reading or relaxing. If you've ever seen "The Agony & The Estasy" (Michalangelo-Charlton Heston) similar music is performed during a banquet scene. 5 stars.
Why was this reissued?.......2005-12-09
Luckily, I only blew about seven bucks on this CD. I can't figure out why this was reissued, although it probably has to do the the big names involved. The vocal performances are not only rough around the edges, but rather under-characterized. But they are spectacular compared with the string performances, which can be described as amateurish at best.
I will not be buying this disk.......2005-01-09
These singers come from the grand opera tradition and they do not seem to have been able to adapt their voices to the stylistic rigours needed to perform Gesualdo's works. The reviewers who stated that the tuning is poor, are correct. We actually listened to these first few bars with the score in hand, and it was totally obvious that the pitch, intonation and timing was very poor.
I'm sorry, but even by chromatic standards it's out of tune........2001-11-20
Yes, these performances are mostly _really_ out of tune even considering the chromatic adventures of Gesualdo. Frankly I'd rather hear other performances, though I haven't seen lots of other Gesualdo collections out there. This is a nice historical recording and has a broad range of Gesualdo's works, so it still might be worthwhile.
The chromatic nature of Gesualdo's music is even more shocking when performed in tune.
Wonderful!.......2001-09-06
My heart skipped a beat when I saw this recording was available on CD... I used to have it on vinyl 25 years ago when I was in college, and nearly wore it out. (In fact, I think I did replace it at least once!)
This is wonderful music, lovingly performed. I agree, as an earlier reviewer complains, that the singers are occasionally not in tune, but ... does one want to complain that Casals is not worth listening to because he couldn't play in tune? I think our ears in this day and age have become spoiled by over-edited and electronically perfected recordings. This recording is thrilling and delightful for precisely the reason that these great singers (look at the names!) got together to record some excellent 5-part vocal music, and did not (obviously) go back and re-record every little moment that didn't go smoothly. It feels much like attending a live performance.
The music of Gesualdo is extraordinary in it's own right, of course, with harmonies that presage Wagner a couple of hundred years ahead of schedule. This recording, with solo voices on each of the 5 parts, let's us really hear all the subtleties of the intricate voice leading that Gesualdo accomplishes.

Elegant and refined with sublime singing by Hunt.......2007-03-19
The overall effect of this interpretation of Ariodante by McGegan is one of elegance, refinement and emotional intensity that flows without being pushed and touches the soul with its singing without being overcontrolled and calculated. This is the main difference between this version and the Minkowski version which has many great moments of lovely singing which surpass the McGegan soloists often, but which is sometimes rushed with overcalculated and overly controlled singing on Otter's part which tarnishes the interpretation. Otter seems not to be really immersed in the part whereas Hunt is. Unforunately the complete recording of this McGegan interpretation is out of print, so get the highlights (this edition)and wait for the re-issue of the complete version.

A strong case for "pirate" recordings.......2004-10-03
Donizetti's Roberto Devereux is the third and final opera of his so-called Tudor trilogy, based on the entanglement of Queen Elizabeth I with Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. The plot plays fast and loose with facts, though no more than most "historical" operas. The music is not consistently as engaging as that of Lucia or some of his other operas, but it is certainly worth hearing, especially when sung by two vocal superstars of the caliber of Montserrat Caballe and Jose Carreras, both at or close to their vocal peaks in 1977, when this live performance was recorded.
One can worry about the ethics of releasing such a performance for general public consumption. Nevertheless, it is hard to argue against it when Caballe never recorded this role commercially, and when the performance is as incandescent as it is here. The diva is in sumptuous voice, floating her trademark pianissimi and spinning long phrases with seemingly endless amounts of breath. Her sense of vocal drama also gives the lie to the frequent rap that she cared for nothing except making beautiful sounds--in fact, she is not hesitant to rasp in chest voice or even snarl when the situation calls for it. Carreras is in ardent, fresh voice as well. They are well supported by Susan (Suzanne?) Marsee and Ferrucio Furlanetto in other roles, and Julius Rudel provides plenty of orchestral excitement. The sound quality is perfectly listenable.
In sum, this is a recording every lover of bel canto opera ought to have. As an embarrassment of riches, the Gala release offers bonus tracks of highlights from another performance of the opera by the very under-recorded Turkish soprano Leyla Gencer, from 1964 in Naples. It is fascinating to compare and contrast the two sopranos in the same role.
Excellent cast and exciting performance!.......2003-08-19
Although not Donizetti's best opera, with a good cast Roberto Devereux can offer a lot of excitement! The audience of this 1977 live performance certainly enjoyed such an exciting evening.
Montserrat Caballe is caught here just before her voice started to become sharper and less beautiful. This live recording proves that Caballe was anything but a dramatically uninvolved singer. She's not afraid to scream and use her chest voice. Neither Sills, nor Gencer sound so committed to the drama in their recordings. And as always, when there's need for soft, elegiac singing like Elisabeth's first cavatina, nobody rivals Montserrat! Strangely for her, she struggles a bit with the "Vivi ingrato" in this recording. I've no idea what she was doing on stage at that moment but she has sung this aria perfectly on other occasions. She immediately recovers however and gives a shocking finale! The audience goes crazy!
Most Roberto Devereux recordings have a great Elisabetta and mediocre Roberto, Sara and Nottingham but NOT THIS ONE! You really must hear Jose Carreras in this recording. Now here's a tenor who perfectly justifies the title of this opera! The power and beauty of his youthful voice are intoxicating! And listen how he phrases...amazing!
The other male roles are also luxuriously cast. Sardinero and the young Furlanetto are wonderful. As Sara, Susan Marsee sings well - I like her high notes - but Donizetti obviously gave the best tunes to his Elisabetta. The sound of this live recording is very good. No surprises from maestro Julius Rudel.
The set also has highlights from a R. Devereux recording with Gencer in the title role. She copes better with Elisabetta's florid music but is less dramatic than Caballe.

The title of this review says it all. Try another collection if you love Handel. Here Minter makes Handel seem lifeless and colorless.
Natural and Accomplished.......2006-04-08
George Frideric Handel, Opera Arias Vol. 1 (re-issue of "Arias for Senesino").
Performed by: Drew Minter, countertenor; Lowell Greer, horn; the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, San Francisco (concertmaster: Michael Sand), directed from the harpsichord by Nicholas McGegan.
Recorded in November, 1986, at Lone Mountain College Chapel, San Francisco, California.
Harmonia Mundi. Originally published in 1987 as HMC 905183. Re-issued as part of the budget-priced Classical Express series as HCX 3955183. Total time: 60 minutes.
Together, Nicholas McGegan and Drew Minter have possibly done more than anybody else in recent years to re-establish the claims of Handel as an opera composer. This activity has, of course, not been limited to CD productions, and in particular it must be the yearly production of an opera at the G?ttingen H?ndelfestspiele in Germany which merits praiseworthy attention. The CD "Opera Arias Vol. 1" was one of the firstfruits of McGegan's association with Minter and with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. Normally, I would shy away from such "bitty" productions with selections of arias instead of whole works, but in this case I can only say Thank God for a wonderful document full of enthusiasm for Handel as an opera composer. Senesino, for whom all the arias on this disc were specially written, was, of course, not a countertenor but a "castrato". In our more enlightened times, we no longer castrate boys in order to make them great soprano singers, and anyone who wants to re-create 18th century opera has to answer the question of how to convey something of the singing which captivated the masses in Handel's day and, in London at least, became the talk of the town. Some directors prefer a certain kind of female voice, a legitimate decision borne out by the success of Vivica Genaux with her album of Arias for Farinelli. In the Farinelli film, a digital mix was made of a male countertenor and a female voice, something I personally feel to be a little dishonest. The third alternative is to use a countetenor, well aware that this is a compromise that can only be a pointer to what the singing of Senesino (and Farinelli) must have been like.
Drew Minter is, after Andreas Scholl and David Daniels, perhaps one of the most natural and accomplished countertenors to grace the early music scene, and this particular CD bears wonderful testimony to his vigour and his ability to sing, seemingly effortlessly, in the typical Handelian style often missed by more well-known opera singers. The two absolute highlights of the disc are the opening "Va tacito e nascosto" from "Giulio Cesare" and "Ah! Stigie Larve", the famous mad scene from "Orlando". The first of these is made even more glorious by Lowell Greer's heavenly natural horn accompaniment, and I find it even more delightful than the rival version by Paul Esswood and the Concentus Musicus Wien directed by Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Warner). Each and every aria is succintly directed by McGegan, an opera genius, and the silvery, rapt playing of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra leaves, to my mind at any rate, nothing whatever to be desired. It is extremely unfortunate that the texts of the arias are no longer included in the booklet.
Lovely.......2006-01-23
I only know vocal Handel (outside of the Messiah) from the Music of the Baroque series in Chicago. That inspired me to find this recording. I enjoy the style, the rhythm, the beauty of the voice, and it's become one of my favorite cds of baroque music. I found it at my university's library. Note that it's a little confusing. The original title was "Handel: Arias for Senesino." However, today I was unable to find it on Amazon under that name. There's a more recent cd with that title; and this is under the title you see above, I suppose because it's a re-issue as part of a series.
Similar to David Daniels recital but textless.......2001-03-28
This CD was originally issued in 1987 as "Arias for Senesino" and then appeared as part of a mid-price 4CD set with similar recitals featuring Lisa Saffer, Lorraine Hunt and David Thomas. The title 'Vol.1' suggests that the other 3 releases in the original series will soon follow, although price-wise buying the full 4CD set (with sung texts) would be better value for money. The Minter disc features arias from Giulio Cesare, Riccardo Primo, Orlando, Flavio and Tolomeo. Here (as with all other HM USA re-releases in this series) the texts and translations have been cut. One wonders why record companies do this in their reissue series? It isn't to save paper as the CD still contains a verbose 20 page booklet. As the lyrics are so essential to understanding and enjoying Handel's operas it would be better to go for the recent disc of Handel arias on Virgin by American countertenor David Daniels who covers almost exactly the same 'arias for Senesino' as Minter. Alternatively there are several collections of soprano arias such as those by Emma Kirkby on Hyperion.

Amazon.com essential recording
All the selections on this staggeringly beautiful recital CD were recorded between 1965 and 1972, when Montserrat Caballé's voice was incapable of betraying her, and when she sang as beautifully and expressively as any soprano within living memory--and probably before then, to boot. Because the voice was in such good shape, with no signs of strain at either end, perfect breath control throughout, and an absolutely full dynamic range--from C to shining C, from pppp to ffff--Caballé was also free to enunciate the text with utter clarity and to make the characters come vividly to life. Her Elizabeth I and Anna Bolena in the Donizetti operas are noble and fascinating, but it is in Bellini that she is utterly irreplaceable. Norma's "Casta diva" has probably never been performed with such intelligence, insight, and exquisite tone, and her duet with Adalgisa (from 1972) is both urgent and tender. And the rarely recorded final scene from Bellini's Il pirata, sung with this much involvement and luster, makes one desperately want to hear the entire opera (yes, Caballé recorded it eventually, but it's hardly a masterpiece). Caballé understands and communicates the music of Bellini like no soprano since Callas--this CD is an important part of any opera lover's collection. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
I will give it 10 stars. This is a must to have........2007-01-05
i agree with all the previous reviewers. THERE IS NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE PERFECTION of her singing. I have this CD for a year. It is permanently on in my player in the bedroom. Most of my mornings start with her Casta Diva. No matter what the day brings it is possible to face it with Monserrat singing. Her Anna Bolena is so sweet and so sad, it brings tears to my eyes. How much I wish she recorded Bolena in the studio. As it is I am eternaly gratefull for what she did record.
Bel Canto, wonderful singing.......2005-08-27
To learn what BEL CANTO means this is a perfect CD. Caballe's CASTA DIVA is the most beautiful! Be aware, if you listen to her, you will not like any other's version, including Callas', of course! The rest of the pieces are not so known but I enjoy them as well.
The most rewarding Montserrat Caballe gold seal cd !!!!!!!!!.......2003-08-13
Montserrat Caballe possesses the most beautiful and remarkable voice in recorded history. Her Bellini&Donizetti cd attests to this fact. She recieves praise from a vast diversity of humanity.Anyone from the spanish king and queen to the painter miro were fans, and many people inbetween. The late rock star freddie mercury adored her as well as many other pop stars, which also recorded with her.Caballe was not just a mega operastar but also a pop star. With her voice she also heals people and relieves stress, pain, and fear, and promotes understanding & peace throughout the world. She is not only well loved in europe and america but in russia, china, japan, many other asian nations,as well as canada and south america. Her voice is so beautiful it can only be explained accurately by the greatest poets. Her voice can be both subtle and powerful.Caballe's timbre is golden and of the quality of the most delicate crystal. The voice is not fragile though but strong, surviving over 45 years of professional singing. You could describe her voice as being purity itself, also. Her voice has no vibrato but can still soar with great power and dramatic intensity. On this cd Caballe shows all of us aptly why she is considered by millions of fans and admirers around the world to be the number one singer in the world.Surpassing all other singers of both sexes and musical genres. This wonderful gold seal recording is legendery.A classic which is a must have in anybody's collection. This cd,in american stores is out of print.Get it from amazon while you still can.Montserrat Caballe is the true den mother of opera, watching over europe now and looking after the opera career of her very talented daughter montserrat marti. The creator God has blessed Caballe above all other aristocratic and blue blood beings. Her likeness will one day preside in the courtyard of the eternal angels of musicality. She is the true ambassodor of music on planet earth.Without her voice to caress me,when I was in the lowest deepest pit of grave suffering,I would have never came back to an earthly life, from the dark regions of inner hell.May more blessings rain down on you from heaven dear, montsy.
BEL CANTO PERFECTION! GIFT FROM GOD!.......2003-06-22
This recital and the other RCA masterpiece M. Caballe: Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi rarities are two recitals that every opera fan DESERVES to hear! It's a gift for all of us who love the sound of bel canto and opera in general.
These are exactly the roles Caballe was born to sing. Her voice and musicianship are wonders! Everything on this CD is sung with such emotion and vocal brilliance that makes me forget any other reading of these famous pieces.
Casta Diva has been superbly performed and recorded before Caballe by legends like Callas and Sutherland and it's hard not to compare them. Yet, in my opinion there is no competition. It's Caballe that I will listen to for the ultimate reading of this piece. It's the perfect combination of her gorgeous voice (I can't get enough of her high notes here!) and expressiveness that makes the difference.
The same goes for the other tracks of this recital. Just listen how she phrases Imogene's "Col sorriso d'innocenza". It's as if time stops when she utters that phrase. Sadly, Caballe did not completely record Roberto Devereux or Maria di Rohan or Anna Bolena in studio. I would have sacrificed many other recordings of hers just to have her in studio in these roles. "Mira o Norma" is taken from her complete Norma recording and Cossotto's wonderful Adalgisa perfectly compliments Caballe's high priestess. The recital ends with Caballe singing some of her best pianissimi in Bolena's scene.
Purchase this recital and discover the world of opera! Just keep in mind that Montserrat Caballe's singing here is addictive!
You are in for a treat of heavenly proportions!!!.......2003-02-01
I got this recital disc recently and was flabbergasted by Caballé's out of this world singing. Her voice is an exquisite instrument of power, beauty, and elegance. It has a more refined timbre than Sutherland's and is more ethereal than Tebaldi's. She has breath-taking control over her gorgeous voice. The runs and roulades are tossed off cleanly. Often criticized for her caustic, fortissimo high notes, she only delivers beautiful high notes here. Even so, a few of the high notes sound a bit strained, especially the one that accompanies the word "infiorato" in the "Bolena" aria. The only fault with her coloratura technique is that she lacks a real trill. In the "Anna Bolena" aria, she substitutes scales for the ascending trills. However, only the most accomplished coloraturas can pull off those very taxing trills correctly. Two examples are the magnificent Joan Sutherland and the incomparable Beverly Sills. Love you, Beverly! By the way, Caballé has the most ethereal pianissimos that I have ever heard. Then again, I haven't experienced Zinka Milanov's pianissimos. Renata Tebaldi also had great pianissimos, but she didn't sustain them as long as Caballé did and they were not as wispy-thin as Caballé's. They were, however, richer-toned than Caballé's due to Tebaldi's fabulous spinto voice. Simply put, I love Caballé's voice more than those of other sopranos'. It had to be sent from heaven. How else would you explain its origins? Anyway, this CD was my first recording of Montserrat and she didn't fail to please. All the hype surrounding her singing is fully justified. Her "Casta Diva" is an exquisite piece of vocalism teamed with drama. This recording is worth owning for that one aria alone. I didn't care much for Imogene's Mad Scene, but she sang it well nonetheless. Her portrayal of Elizabeth I in "Vivi ingrato" is not the most dramatic, but it is not dull either. She amazes you with the beauty of her singing. No where will you find a more beautifully sung version of this aria. Beverly Sills is more dramatic, but even she can't beat Caballé's exquisite vocalism. Sills gives us the private, tortured woman behind the queen. Caballé gives us Elizabeth the suffering, but regal queen. Her rendition of the aria from "Lucrezia Borgia" makes one want to hear the full recording of that opera with her in the title role. She is truly astonishing. Her "Havvi un dio" is delivered masterfully. The exquisite duet from "Norma", "Mira, o Norma", is rendered tenderly with expert vocalism and dramatic involvement. The mezzo-soprano is competent and has excellent breath control. She sounds unnervingly like Caballé. I believe she is Fiorenza Cossotto. If so, then this track must have been taken from Caballé's complete studio recording of "Norma". The last track, half of Anna Bolena's Mad Scene, is done wonderfully. Again, the vocalism is exquisite. However, I prefer Sills' masterful rendition. She sings just as well as Caballé does, but she is so much more dramatically involved. When she sings about Percy and asks forgiveness for abandoning him, she turns in a frenetic and very exciting performance. And, of course, no soprano, including Callas, sings "Al dolce guidami" so right and so convincingly. When she sings the words "castel natio" before the ascending trills, which are great by the way, her voice matches Donizetti's musical and vocal inflections perfectly. You have to hear it to believe it! It sounds so right that one has to believe that it cannot be bettered. Anyway, back to Caballé. She shows us in this recital why she was considered one of the very few prime donne assoluti in the world in the the period from 1965 to her retirement from the operatic stage a few decades later. To her fans, this is a required recording.

Customer Reviews:
Bel Canto, indeed.......2001-02-02
I became interested in this album after hearing a recording of Ms. Horne singing "Superbo di me stesso" on another album - her rendition here makes me tired just hearing it! This album is a live recording with piano only, but I found it to be a nice mix of music and of generally high quality. Her rendition of "He's Gone Away" is quite moving. Any fan of Ms. Horne's would be advised to purchase this recording.
