Salsa and Latin music enthusiasts have often wondered what caused the music's extraordinary renaissance in the late 1960s and '70s to peter out. After a period of remarkable cross-fertilization and experimentation, when old hands like Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria played with funk beats, Eddie Palmieri plugged in an electric Fender Rhodes keyboard and bands like Santana and El Chicano injected rock with Latin swing (and vice versa), the musical climate shifted towards synthesizers, pop ballads and the sugary "salsa romantico" that dominates Latin radio today in the form of everyone from Marc Anthony to Ricky Martin. Bio Ritmo, a nine-piece self-described "classic" salsa band from Virginia, makes clear on their mostly smoking self-titled fourth release just what it is we've been missing all these years. Lead singer and songwriter Rei Alvarez brings his Puerto Rican roots to bear on material that more than anything echoes the thrilling sound of Palmieri's groundbreaking 1960s and '70s bands La Perfecta and Harlem River Drive. On "Atrevete" pianist Marlysse Simmons brings some serious salsa chops to bear on her funky Fender Rhodes solo while the band drops impressively into Brazilian samba, and "Fabula" shows off some high-energy playing from timbalero Giustino Riccio while the group goes from hard-driving salsa to an intense Afro-Cuban 6/8 groove. About the only blemish on this otherwise immaculate canvas is bassist Jon Sullivan's insistence on overusing envelope filter bass effects--whooshing science fiction sounds that come across as gratuitous, since the group's open-mindedness and willingness to experiment is obvious enough from the music. --Ezra Gale

I think it is great! You'll definitely enjoy listening to it in your car. My favorite songs are number(s) 5, 7 and 8. There is improvision throughout the entire cd; plus I really like the vocals. It has an upbeat feel so I think it will even pep you up for work. It can even motivate you on your way to class. All of the artists are talented and blend very well together.

My three year old daughter poured rice in a coffee can and joined in on a family conga line whilst listening to "Ugly" (with the wonderful lyric, "ugly, ugly, all the people think I'm ugly/ugly, ugly, even after drinks I'm ugly."

Salsa with brains (no that's not an exotic dish - but an apt description of this CD.)

Even if you don't exercise to this music, it does the heart good.

Bio Ritmo's three albums, Rumba Baby Rumba, Salsa Galactica, and Que Siga La Musica, all sound like they were done by completely different bands. They must have changed the lineup around between albums.

Rumba Baby Rumba and Que Siga La Musica are both really good, but this album was kind of boring.

Well, thanks to Bio Ritmo, I am now all up in the Latin dance music scene. Their lyrics are really funny and smooth, not to mention the beat which could make someone without legs dance. They rock! Or, shall I say, they rumba!

Bio Ritmo - Refreshing change to everyday music.......1999-02-21

Who'd ever thought that I would purchase a CD recorded in mostly Spanish. Well after witnessing this band live at Old Dominion University I was hooked. They have a style that's so hypnotic, even if you have two left feet you just have to start dancing. I recently purchased their newest CD and from what I am hearing, it is also their best. If you like horns and rich rhythm I recommend picking up this one. PS if anyone knows the chica that says "Tequila" on Bio Ritmo's sixth track send me an email, cause I think I'm in love!

What a change of pace!.......1999-02-08

I am a huge fan of swing but that can get repetitive. Various latin-influenced songs have crept into swing and caught my attention. That is how I found BIO RITMO. And they are AWESOME. The first track blew me away and each song was totally catchy. This is an album that is worth your while just to hear something fresh and new (and performed with energy)

A Good Starting Point..........1999-01-04

This is a good album to buy to see if you like this Latin music that you may have heard about.

There are a coupla "cute" novelty numbers that distracted and detracted from the album as a whole for me. On the other hand, the Latin numbers are dead-on, rock-solid examples of the genre: if you don't like them, you won't like Latin.
