Chris Franck, the multi-instrumentalist behind Smoke City, and DJ Patrick Forge are the brains behind Da Lata, who really became known in 1998 with the single "Pra Manha," which made a big impact in dance clubs. Building on that success, the artists created a wild album whose textures reflect the light, subtle beats and accents of Brazil rather than the four-on-the-floor of dance music. Dierdre Dubois of Ekova helps out with vocals on the opening "Binti," but most of the singing comes from the smoky-voiced Lilliana Chachian. Strings and touches of brass help the arrangements soar, especially on "Rain Song" and the closer "The Tin Within." Like the late Suba, Da Lata came to Brazilian music from the outside without the restrictions of tradition, and they both impose their own ideas on the bossa nova and samba, letting the groove slide sexily around and allowing the hips to do the talking. Close to perfect. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC .......2006-10-31

This is not strictly a "Brazilian" CD in that it wasn't made in Brazil. But it may as well have been. "Songs from the Tin" is an instant classic. It has a trance-like, beautiful sound to it...almost Suba-like but more upbeat than "Sao Paulo Confessions". There is almost nothing like "Songs from the Tin" in the entire panorama of "Brazilian" music - "Songs from the Tin" breaks new ground. Indeed, Da Lata have yet to repeat these heights (or indeed have anyone else) - a delight from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars RHYTHMIC AND INSPIRING.......2006-05-11

"Songs from the Tin" is an explosion of colors, sexy voices, melodic rhythms and eclecticism. Nowadays, it seems difficult to find and album that could both inspire your soul and wake your feet up. Nonetheless, with their very first album, Da lata could not only reinvent Brazilian traditional styles, but also create a breathtaking and sensual collage with no intention but to seduce the listener. An assault on the senses.

A mesmerizing and captivating atmosphere opens the album: whispering, drums, moans; thirty seconds, and you are already intrigued. And suddenly, like a brilliant aurora, the magnificent voice of Dierdre transports you to another world of fantasy and delight. That is "Binti". "Cores" establishes the drums' reign; it is a song to dance while the sun sets. There is a warm delicacy about a song like "The Rain Song", a deep melancholy, a true feeling. Maybe it is Lilliana Chachian's husky voice, maybe it is the sultry guitar. You cannot help but adore it.

"Borboleta" always draws a smile on my face. It starts as a terribly simple composition, stripped down, almost acoustic. Then the violin crying, then the delicate drums, then the guitars murmuring. Seductive. "Pra manha" is a samba I cannot resist. It tempts you, it lures you. You either dance or dance. "Tregua" is exactly that: a moment of rest and relax.

Nevertheless, soon you are impelled to dance again, although this time to a darker, more serious song. It is "Inae". "Indo" is a charming bossa nova, with its exquisite rhythm and its seductive trumpet. Pure bliss. "Rio Vida" is a sun-drenched walk around Brazilian beaches, an impetus, a self-content laughter.

The album closes with a rather haunting, elegant instrumental composition. There is a certain sadness about it, like the lonely coldness of a night that is about to end. It is simply moving.

"Songs from the Tin" is definitely one of my favourite albums: a mixture of passion, sensuality and rhythm. It is a celebration of music, a moment of warmth, a catharsis. It is the album that you will love.

5 out of 5 stars Wondrous!.......2005-12-10

I don't know much about this group, but this is a great album! Brazilian trance-pop with lots of native instruments, including guitars and deep bass drums. Recording is very clean.

Highly recommended.

turn off your radio that plays all that preprogrammed garbage and listen to this. Da Lata I came across doing the dirty deed of downloading, but now own both their albums...I am not crazy about Serious, as it lacks the easy sensuality of this album. Songs from the Tin explores samba and bossa nova beats where Serious explores more pop and r and b. songs of the tin is a music that puts you in a place and time that you want to be, usually near the ocean in warm weather and in the southern hemisphere. The vocals are smooth and inviting, the rhythms ones you cant forget and altogether the sound is exotic and pleasurable.

4 out of 5 stars Surpringsingly Brazilian.......2003-11-29

As a Brazilian, used to MPB ("Musica Popular Brasileira") and Bossa Nova, I was very surprised by this CD. It represents the continuous evolution and experimentation that defines modern Brazilian music. Like the Brazilian culture, its music is always evolving, providing new interpretations of our memories and opening our eyes to a world of creativity. Some folks might complain about a track or two, but innovation has its risks. This is Brazil.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5, maybe........2004-05-28

The follow-up to their first album is pretty disappointing, or at least less elusive and alluring. The delicate balancing act of the "Songs From The Tin" set here gives way to a simpler, more clear-cut world-beat dance sound, it's okay, but fairly mundane by comparison. More geared towards the electronica club music crowd, and almost entirely skewed towards African influences, with the languid Brazilian touches set aside, this album seems more workmanlike than innovative or inspired. It's okay, I guess, but I found it to be a bit dull.

5 out of 5 stars Serious=Growth=Evolution=Great Album!!.......2004-04-21

First off, 'Songs From The Tin' will forever be high on my list of CDs. That said 'Serious' follows it's predecessor musically and more so conceptually. First, as an open letter from the Third World to the Western World. Second, it's a representation of the genre-busting and cross-pollination that is the London music scene. The guest performers are perfect examples of both points. As for the complaint over the African sounds in the previous review, one only has to read history, listen to Brasilian music or even the first Da Lata album to hear that African rhythms make up Brasilian music. With that in mind, the album draws on the similarities between the two cultures. The bittersweet duet of Nina Miranda and Baaba Maal on "Distracted Minds" has Third World(Latin and African) voices questioning the existential priorities of the "civilized" Western world. While the brilliant Jhelisa(an American vocalist living in London) croons her open letter of reluctance to Blair and Bush over broken beats on 'Reeling'. Jhelisa and Nina team up to bring vocals reminiscent of Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 on 'Something', taking a stab at emotional and material consumption. The energetic rhythm of flute and beat on 'Firefly' has the listener running through some place wild and peaceful.Brasil is represented by Pedro Martin's vocals over a bossa nova track with intricate guitar work and a semi- beat box vocal to keep the rhythm. The production still blends the acoustic with the digital. 'Songs from Tin' (Yin) was an album reflecting the innocent, hopefull, folkloric aspects of Brasilian culture, Da Lata's follow up is a "Serious" (Yang) more tech-heavy, non compliant response to a post 9/11 world climate.Their objective is still the same- expand the musical blueprint and provide the soul with fresh honest music that unites. It's a great world CD or a great electronic CD......For those looking for more Liliana and Oli look for the Negrocan and Arakatuba albums. For Nina Miranda check out Smoke City and Arkestra One

2 out of 5 stars Seriously.... what happened?.......2004-01-16

I really agree with the previous reviewer. No Oli. No Liliana Chachian. And very little Nina Miranda. What do you get? Braziliance running out the door faster than Ronaldo chasing a loose ball. This is the outfits 3rd release, second full if you discount their remix project, and boy did they go in another direction. Sometimes I really hate it when that happens. I mean, I can't say it enough - what happened? Why? Songs From the Tin was a terrific cd. Liliana's voice was very rich and spirited, Patrick Forge's mixing was on point and getting stronger and Christian Franck - what can I say? He's a terrific musician and guitarist.

But here they seemed to have dropped the whole Brazilian vibe and have gone in a more African sounding direction. Then they go towards a more electronic sound instead of having live musicians. The sound seems forced and this just isn't as original. Which is okay if you're into that sort of sound. But it's a bit of a disappointment if you're a fan of the Smoke City and old Da Lata tracks... expecting to hear Franck on the guitar, pinpoint mixing and breathtaking vocals. I honestly picked this up the day it came out, pumped that it was coming out however couldn't review it - I too listened to it a few times trying to find something fantastic about it but... it's just not there. The song I enjoyed was "If U Don't Know", but that was the second shortest. I only hope they take a step back and return to their other sound.

I'd have to recommend against this if you're a "Songs From the Tin" fan or into Smoke City's "Flying Away". Da Lata does have a remix project but even there be warned, the sound is a bit different from Songs From the Tin (but still much much better than this). It features some pretty sweet cuts and original Da Lata remakes and takes like Ponteio, Golden and a remix to KV:5's (Marc Brown of Smoke City's other project) Lies & Untruths. On the flip side if you do enjoy this, you'd probably also enjoy the newest from Mo Horizons (think Foto Viva) cd titled "Mo' Horizons and the New Bohemiam Freedom".

1 out of 5 stars Complete disappointment.......2004-01-04

The smoky, mysterious ambience of "Songs From The Tin" is completely gone. What appears to have happened here is that some entity-corporate or maybe (God forbid) the group-abandoned the sound in hopes of getting mainstream radio play and sales. This project has inane lyrics and unremarkable melodies. I listened to the disc several times to see if I just wasn't "getting it" but ultimately stuck with my first impression.

I was very happy to see another release from Da Lata and certainly want them to succeed as artists. But I'm sorry I paid full price for this CD without hearing the disc first. Maybe a change back to their previous direction for the next project?

4 out of 5 stars different direction.......2003-11-02

I have to start by saying that Da Lata's first album, "Songs From The Tin" is a wonderful album full of beautiful, lush songs. Although some consider Da Lata electronic music, the music on "Songs" sounds very organic. "Serious", on the other hand is overt electronic music with less of the nuance of their first effort. "Serious" is good enough, with a few exceptions I enjoyed most of the 10 songs (clocking in at less than 40min.).
It could be that for me "Songs From The Tin" is so perfect that "Serious" could not possibly live up. I would not go so far as to say that Da Lata suffered from a sophomore slump, although only time will tell.

Patrick Forge UK DJ extradorinaire is one of the main forces behind Da Lata, but this is more than simply DJ fodder. Da Lata is an astounding live band that make a really new version of Brazilian music that is utterly fresh and contempoary. This is the real new Bossa for the new century. Also look for the Da Lata album. Beautiful music that will appeal to fans of Jazzanova and Tamba Trio.

4 out of 5 stars great arrangements (heavy on Brazilian percussion).......2005-11-21

These are terrific remixes, mostly of material by other artists (with 2 of their own songs). They do great things with tracks by people such as Virginia Rodrigues, Ekova, Carlinhos Brown, and Sly & Robbie. It is heavy on Brazilian percussion, so if a lot of that gets on your nerves, this isn't your cuppa tea. As someone who's played Brazilian percussion for 25 years, I really like the arrangements they've made - just as good for listening as for dancing.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta chalk it up to taste.......2003-09-23

Wow! It's a good thing I disregarded the reviews you can read below, because this is one of the best collections of beat-heavy Brazilian trax that I've ever come across...and I've listened to hundreds of CD's claiming 'the new Brazil sound."

First off, it should come as no surprise that this collection isn't going to appeal to the "Songs From the Tin" crowd. Come on people, if you want more downbeat, sappy love songs or just plain cheesy house stuff there are a ton of labels out there to serve you. Ditto on the purely Brazilian fare. Ethnomusicologists have pretty much got you covered.

What's a lot harder to find is top-quality electronica that smartly incorporates Brazilian influences without seeping into Queso.

Well, this disc succeeds on many levels. Aggressive rhythms with sweet flourishes added in for flavor. Organic production. Interesting sequencing between the songs and high quality throughout.

If you want sappy love songs, kindly look elsewhere...

          2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2003-06-25

I was so stoked when I heard "Vai Minha Trizteza" at Chelsea Piers in 2000. So I got Songs from the Tin and it was a great. Da Lata's Remixes is a shame, I was so disappointed to hear recycled methods and beats that sound three years old with old melodies as prop. Comparatively, Hefner did a much better job in his remix album than Da Lata did. More relevantly, this one is very boring.

3 out of 5 stars Beat Heavy - be warned.......2002-10-20

I couldn't wait to get this. After Songs from the Tin, I was excited about another Da Lata release. But then when I got it in my hands and looked at the back cover, I was a bit surprised - I honestly expected to hear some tracks from Songs from the Tin remixed. But that's not what this album is about. It is actually in the same mold as Jazzanova's remix album or Thievery Corporation's Abductions and reconstructions. I.E., remixes of other's music.

None-the-less, I figured it would still be pretty solid. And it is, however it doesn't quite live up to expectations - and even some of the remixes hardly surpass the original works of the artists. For instance, August Day Song - which even features Nina Miranda of Smoke City (Christian Francks other group) doesn't have the same kind of glide that it does on Bebel Gilberto's album, or even on her remix album.

The good thing about this album? There is Ponteio - what sort of put them on the map in my book. The track wasn't released on their debut album (surprisingly) and somewhat saves face here.

All in all, it's not a bad album. It's very folkish, and very beat heavy. Da-Lata always did focus on the rythms and percussion of Brazil. If you're a big time fan of the "Brazilian Beats" series, you'll probably love this - same with Bebel Gilberto's remix album. But if you're a pure Songs from the Tin fan, and liked the melodic music they proposed... specifically the first five tracks on the album - be warned - this is nothing like it.
