Travis seemingly disappeared after the arguably forgettable 12 Memories but the sound of the Scottish group's daydream-pretty guitar rock endured thanks to Keane, Snow Patrol, and especially Coldplay. More than three years later, Travis is playing catch-up with their fifth studio album, The Boy with No Name. Predictably, it's a well-crafted affair, bursting to life with tunes that celebrate life's minor victories such as "Closer," "Battleships," and "My Eyes." But as a comeback effort it feels flawed, let down by both melodies that disappear into the ether as quickly as they come out of the speakers ("One Night," "3 Times You Lose") and those that clumsily attempt to tweak the formula ("Eyes Wide Open," "Selfish Jean"). --Aidin Vaziri

Welcome back Travis.......2007-07-17

Travis has never received the recognition it deserves in the states. I love all of their albums for different reasons (yes, even 12 Memories) and this one did not disappoint me. Gorgeous melodies, Fran's lovely voice, Andy tearing it up on the guitar, backed by Dougie's great bass lines, and Neil's superb drumming. If you're a fan you've probably already purchased this after having to wait 3 years. If not, please buy it and support a talented band. And go see them live because they are incredible.

Say It Ain't So.......2007-07-01

Well, I guess it had to happen eventually. They released four great albums in a row, but the streak is over. I just don't know where this came from. After hearing "Walking In The Sun" from Singles I assumed the Travis dynasty would be prosperous for years to come. I listened to this entire album and almost felt like weeping (not in a good way).

The best word to describe this album is definitely "filler". Think of every Travis song you never really cared for. What did they all have in common? Less than impressive singing? Uneventful choruses? Overall drab music that doesn't stand out? All of these things describe this album in my opinion. I remember listening to previous albums and being greeted by wonderful melodies, catchy rhythms and unforgetable lyrics. This album really lacks a clear direction and passion. You can't honestly tell me Fran is singing these songs from his heart. It sounds like these songs were recorded right after one of his family members died. Most of these songs aren't very well written to begin with, but the ones that are just aren't done justice. I hope these sound better when played live or there's going to be some pissed concert goers.

The one shining light off in the distance is "My Eyes". The sound isn't exactly rehash from previous years, but the energy is definitely more like traditional Travis. I enjoy listening to this song and it actually sounds like they enjoy playing it. I can't say it enough, they just don't deliver on the rest of this album.

I don't think the old Travis is lost and gone forever. This release does feel a little forced but eventually they'll come back with something they really love and you'll love it just the same.

Too much of Franny being the minstrel and not enough of the band doing what they do best. After waiting a long time for the follow-up to 12 Memories, The Boy with No Name is a monumental disappointment.

Bold & Beautiful........2007-06-08

It's been a while. Three and a half long years since their last studio album, and almost a decade since they bounced onto the scene with 'Good Feeling'. That debut had them down as the next big Brit-pop band and erstwhile Oasis chums / prodigies, even if the rest of the world hardly noticed their obvious talent. It was only the breakthrough "Why Does It Always Rain On Me" a couple of years later that launched them into the mainstream. Two albums and a collection later they have freed themselves of any expectant hype and can return to making sweet music. They always have done of course, and you really shouldn't be put off that this is a CD that both you and your mum can enjoy. For goodness sake, your Gran may do too.

Be warned that it's an album likely to get under your skin - in a good way that is. Something that seems so unlikely when you play it through for the first time, as it is so perfectly unassuming. Starting off with barely a whimper that is the intro to "3 Times And You Lose" it is the antithesis of going in with all guns blazing. But the track nurdles around with a listless pleasure, and harmonies that waft in the breeze. Uncannily simple, and marvellously crafted without really trying.

The "Lust For Life" beat behind "Selfish Jean" gives it a more obvious pop feel, and somewhat flyaway at that. But it's a worthwhile tempo change that would otherwise leave the album too samey. "Closer" really shouldn't be a such a strong song as it has an almost dreary quality to it, yet still a strong melody and easy hook doesn't let you down. A more complex rhythm makes "Big Chair" beautifully different, and even then you'll be humming along to a song that you feel you've known all your life - on the first listen.

Real credit to taking a leaner approach to production also. "Battleships" is a gem of a song of relationships gone wrong, and it could have turned into a grandiose Keane-esque, multi-layered extravaganza in the wrong hands. Instead it is kept clean and simple, where the words are allowed to shine and not sink. "Eyes Wide Open" has more of a plodding, ballsy quality, squeezed into a tight and very handy 3 minute track.

Travis do have a trademark sound that is "Writing To Reach You" or "Flowers In The Window", which is that easy, relaxed folkiness, often with the odd banjo plucked in for good measure. That soundprint is rarely far from this album, with "My Eyes" the latest amalgam of that style.

"Under the Moonlight" is deceptively good song, and yet another why you wonder why it's not been done before. "Out In Space" has a chillier simplicity, whilst the final "New Amsterdam" is a perfect homage to what is now New York. Talking of a "park that is Central" may be a tad contrived, but the unsophisticated view of what is outwardly so complex, sums up their ethos for the whole album.

Subtlety is often confused with growing old in music, and it's definitely the former here. They bounded around in their "Tied to the 90's" days youth but now have established a real understanding of what they are doing, giving them far more confidence to understate their case.

A certain Scottish music guru famously called Coldplay "bed-wetters", and the same criticism could be wielded at Travis of this CD (if you don't actually listen to it that is), though the Glasgow originated Fran Healey & Co would be more likely to punch such detractors out cold. Besides, it's not true. To deliver simplicity this beautiful is both bold and beautiful.

There no doubt exists a school of rock purists who consider Invisible Touch the album where Genesis officially kissed street credibility goodbye and said hello to beer commercial anthems and puppet extravaganza videos. True, perhaps, but on the other hand, it's great to sing along to a good pop song, too. And this record has good pop songs in spades, from rock-solid I'm-not-so-tough-I-can't-cry-style tearjerkers ("In Too Deep," "Throwing It All Away") to zingy, gurgly pop confections ("Land of Confusion," "Anything She Does"). A few slightly more sprawling tracks are also included ("Tonight, Tonight, Tonight," "Domino," and the instrumental "The Brazilian"), but compared to the band's earlier attempt at art-rock opuses, even these feel a bit candy coated. We are talking about 1987, after all. Thin synth lines weren't retro. They just were. And we loved it. --Bob Michaels

Genesis' most successful album in the US is still great 20 plus years on.......2007-06-22

English progressive rockers Genesis released their 16th overall album entitled Invisible Touch in June of 1986.
By 1986, lead singer and drummer Phil Collins was a solo superstar with his 1985 solo album No Jacket Required which hit #1, spawned singles and won him Grammies. Plus had hits with the soundtrack songs "Against All Odds" in 1984 and "Separate Lives" (with Marilyn Martin) in 1985. Plus he produced Earth Wind and Fire singer Philip Bailey's album Chinese Wall (which featured the two Phil's duet Easy Lover) and songs for Adam Ant's Strip album. Keyboard player Tony Banks had done the film score to the Kevin Bacon movie Quicksilver. Guitarist/bass player Mike Rutherford started his side project called Mike and the Mechanics which released its self-titled debut which spawned three singles.
In late 1985, the band plus co-producer Hugh Padgham recorded the follow-up to the 1983 self-titled effort. When the album was released, would fans embrace it or turn its back on the band. Read on and find out.
We kick things off with the chart-topping title track which has one of the best Rutherford riffs I ever heard and is still a great pop number today. Next is the first of two epics "Tonight Tonight Tonight". This track speaks about the evils of drugs and the seedy parts of life and with the drum machine loop, created a masterpiece. The song was released as a single with over FOUR MINUTES chopped from this classic and was another US Top 10 hit. We follow with "Land of Confusion" which was a great rocker. Who cannot forget the video where the puppets of the band and the late Ronald Reagan are dominating the clip. This track was another Top 5 hit here in the US. The album's first side closed with another Top 10 hit "In Too Deep" which was a nice ballad to close the first half.
The driving "Anything She Does" kicks off the album's second half and is an incredibly fun rocker with amusing supermodel-oriented lyrics that are right on the money, and the synth horns on it sound remarkably like the real thing. The video for this was funny and included the late Benny Hill as their head of security Fred Scottle Esquire! Next is the 11 minute plus epic "Domino". The first section "In the Glow of the Night" is wistful and superb. Then the section ends suddenly and we dreamingly then segue into the powerful "The Last Domino" which is killer despite the Simmons drums which slightly date the song. Next is the album's second US Top 10 hit "Throwing It All Away" which was a superb ballad. We then close the album with the atmospheric instrumental called "The Brazilian" which is packed with killer hooks and a wild atmosphere.
Invisible Touch would become Genesis' highest charting album in the US reaching #3 and was also its best selling album in the US with 6 million copies sold in the US alone and it is because the material is superb and has held up. Also, ex-Genesis members Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett had success that year with their albums So and GTR respectively. Invisible Touch is still superb today.

GENESIS ADDS THEIR INVISIBLE TOUCH TO THIS INCREDIBLE ALBUM........2007-05-05

I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "GENESIS - INVISIBLE TOUCH" by one of England's pride and joy's. I give you one of Britain's favorite sons, G-E-N-E-S-I-S! "INVISIBLE TOUCH" was originally released in 1986 on Vinyl/LP, Cassette and Compact Disc on the Atlantic Records label which is a Warner Communications Company. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

GENESIS will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems ever.
It is now 1985 and a new phase for the band during this point in their career. GENESIS' lead singer, drummer and frontman Phil Collins would continue to enjoy his solo career with the extremely successful "NO JACKET REQUIRED" album released in 1985. His tour would be extremely successful to highly critically acclaim. However, Collins would forever remain loyal to the band that gave him his start and would willingly return to GENESIS and rejoin his fellow bandmates and friends Tony Banks on keyboards and bassist, lead and rhythm guitarist Mike Rutherford. It was now time for the band to head into the recording studio and record the follow-up allbum to the extremely successful "GENESIS" album from 1983. It would be on this next GENESIS album that the band would follow in the same recording atmosphere and tradition as the previous successful album "GENESIS" released in 1983. After a certain period of time went by, the band would emerge and come out of the recording studio with the fully completed acetate and deliver the finished product to their record label and employer, Atlantic Records. Atlantic Records would release the product as the "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album in 1986. In my opinion, the "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album is another true testament of the genius and musical creativity of three extremely talented individuals. The "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the rock n' Roll music of GENESIS to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album from 1986 begins with the incredible synthesized progressive Rocker "Invisible Touch," the beautifully slow and soothing synthesized Rocker "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight," the breathtaking synthesized Progressive hard Rocker "Land Of Confusion," the beautifully slow and well arranged love song "In Too Deep," the fast and energetic progressive Rocker "Anything She Does," the groundbreaking and beautifully slow mild Rocker turned fast synthesized progressive Rocker "Domino (Part One - In The Glow Of The Night AND Part Two - The Last Domino)," one of the greatest and most powerful love songs ever written that we can all grasp and relate to, "Throwing It All Away" and the beautifully synthesized progressive instrumental song "The Brazilian." May I also add that all three musicians were steamin' and sizzlin' red hot while laying down the tracks for this album. Phil Collins' blistering lead vocals were so powerful and emotional that he takes the songs and music to an entirely different level.

Overall, this is one great album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard GENESIS fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of GENESIS, I would highly suggest that you research the many GENESIS greatest hits compilation albums on Amazon com before you make your final decision as to which GENESIS album(s) that is right for your musical needs and tastes. If you feel that you truly love the music of GENESIS and you want more, then it would be in your best interests to purchase their many other studio albums that are available on Amazon com. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step towards owning and starting your very own GENESIS music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you ever get a chance, buy this album. You'll be happy and satisfied that you did.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. In closing, the GENESIS "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album would be released in 1986 to highly critically acclaim. The band would also quickly embark on a new World Tour to promote the "INVISIBLE TOUCH" album in what would prove to be one of their greatest tours yet ever. Following the tour, it was now time once again for the band to take another long rest and hiatus. There would be many other GENESIS albums that are still yet to come and new stories that would still need to be told and written. Genesis - Overexposed But A Decent Album.......2007-04-11

This album gets regularly pounded by progressive rock fans as the album where Genesis hit rock bottom. I think part of the problem was that the album was so incredibly commercially successful that many of the tracks were played so much on the radio (and MTV) that people just got sick of hearing them. Add to that the fact that two songs appeared in TV commercials (again vastly overexposed), it is easy to see why this album earned the "sell out" tag that many people place upon it. All this being said, I have always liked this album. No, it is not on a par with the band's progressive rock masterpieces of the 70's, but taken for what it is I enjoy most of it. On the negative side the title track "Invisible Touch", "In Too Deep", and "Throwing It All Away" are pretty typical Phil Collins mush, but these songs are still much better than the crap he put out on his solo albums. On the positive side there are some really good tracks on the disc. "Tonight Tonight, Tonight" is a 10 plus minute proggish tune that now is usually thought of as TV commercial music, but listening to the unedited version it is really a strong track. "Land Of Confusion" is another good social commentary song that suffered from massive over airplay. "Anything She Does" is another good pop tune. The album closer "The Brazilian" is a cool instrumental written by Tony Banks. The highlight of the disc (and the most prog oriented track) is the two part 10 minute plus "Domino". I love this song and on the tour it was one of the highlights of the show. As mentioned previously some people really hate this album, and I can understand where they are coming from, but I have always thought it was a decent effort.

The second worst album of Genesis.......2007-02-15

This is an album that I really hate, most of the songs have been heard over an over again, I can't listen to them anymore, I am talking about "Invisible Touch",Tonight, tonight, tonight", "Land of confusion", "In too deep", "Anything she does" and "Throwing it all away"
It's like fast food, you get into it fast, but as soon as you have finish, you begin to feel sick. These songs were instant hits, but they didn't pass the test of time. The only track that I still like is "Domino" part one and two.

One last point, the only other Genesis album that is this weak is "Abacab"
I am wondering how can somebody can give five star to an album like this one ?

GREAT ALBUM WITH A BAD REPUTATION.......2007-02-05

1986, genesis was not purely progressive rock anymore. This album still possesses the basic genesis elements you'll find on trick or wind or duke. The drama, heavy drums, great keyboard sequences, & long songs are still here. By 1986 Collins was a huge name as solo, producer, session player, & of course with genesis. This album carries the rep of complete pop & it's not true. This album & the last (genesis / 1983) has long & short, fast & slow, happy & sad. There are two songs on here that are over 10 minutes (domino & tonight) Genesis definitly retains their progressive roots here in songs like domino, tonight, & the brazillian. they just modernize the theory. You have to change & do different things. Genesis & collins are renound for changing. Everytime a genesis album came out from the late 70s to the early 90s people were surprised, be it impressed or disgusted. Here, collins is using alot of electric drums & is mixing them with acoustic drums especially in songs like tonight & throwing it all away. Although the drum machine is here per usual, phil is playing live & very aggressively. Tony Banks's keyboard patterns are typical but the yamaha piano is pretty much gone in place of longer sustained chords (typical). Rutherford's knack for great rhythm guitar patterns is represented well here especially in domino & tonight. Collins's vocal range is very strong here & shows the depth of his ability as a vocalist. This album produced 5 top 5 hits in 1986-87 & was #1 in us/uk. I can still remember those michelob commercials with genesis doing tonight... Long time ago... This was also the last genesis album until 1991 (we can't dance) which would be their last studio album. This album is in every way a genesis album. it retains the genesis format. There are more poppy songs in 4/4 time but the songs are still complex. Genesis was good for many reasons. The biggest reason was they were good was they could turn a simple pop song into a complex journey. Sometimes simplicity is complexity. Great album...

St. Paul's Cathedral ImpressiveCollection of Anglican Hymns.......2007-01-24

St. Paul's Cathdral is the second largest cathedral church in the basilican style, exceeded only by St. Peter's Rome. New York City's St. John the Divine is larger than St. Paul's, but with decidely gothic elements. All three cathedrals have fine choirs, but St. Paul's and St. John's continue the noble and unique sound of boys and men in the English tradition. St. Paul's great organ is one of the world's finest, with a decay of seven seconds. The great hymns are all here, conducted by John Scott, only recently appointed organist of St. Thomas' Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City. This is a recording will a be prized addition to your library of choral music. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent Cathedral Organ & Choral .......2006-02-24

This selection of recordings by The Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral contains pieces representative of traditional Anglican musical liturgy. The technical aspects of this production on compact disk seem to be outstanding, but beware that the original recordings were in some cases less than stellar. Another reviewer points out that on some tracks the lyrics sung by the choir are overwhelmed by the superb organ playing, which no doubt occurred due to inadequate microphone placement during the recording sessions. That said, I nevertheless rate this presentation of the St. Paul's Choir highly. It provides a mixture of musical types. In addition to the choir, the CD presents the work of four organists, including a marvelous organ solo, as well as several pieces sung a cappella by the choir and its boy treble soloists. I especially recommend this choir's rendetion of Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere," which features the voices of two boy trebles, a boy alto and a bass, which yeilds a mesmerizing experience. Unless one is acquiring full sets of the St. Paul's Choir's music, this compact disk should delight anyone interested in traditional cathedral organ and choral music.

LACK OF DICTION?!!!.......2003-11-12

Obviously the individual who wrote the review including the "marred by lack of diction" remark is not too familiar with the traditional boychoir sound. I am moved to sickness that they were so openly compared with the sound of the all-too-familiar MTC. THOSE WERE ADULTS!!! These are boys! Boys cannot give the kind of sound of the MTC because their voices are not developed enough. The greatest hope a boychoir has of wowing audiences is in their contrast in dynamics. They model this beautiffully in their acapella pieces. In their accompanied pieces, I feel they hold their own above the (sometimes blearing) organ.
Know the genre a little better before you slander a great performance.

The singing is beautiful, melodious and full of harmony. The organ would make Bach proud.

But the lyrics do not stand out. In fact, they are obliterated by the surrounding melodies.

I hate to do this, but I am comparing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. These little boys would learn from them.

It is a pity that these grand lyrics should be obscured by inept singing by a choir of young boys and men.

The Invisible Band marks no major change in direction for Travis, but this is no bad thing. That Travis are the most simplistic of the post-Radiohead groups may not sound like the heartiest of compliments, but it undoubtedly accounts for their massive appeal. The Man Who became one of the most popular indie-rock records of the 1990s by virtue of its cheery accessibility and its way with a simple weather metaphor, and judging by the lyrics of "Side"--"The grass is always greener on the other side / The neighbor's got a new car that you wanna drive"--it's immediately obvious that come their third full-length album, Travis have figured out that their fans are not waiting for a brave sonic crusade. Which doesn't matter a bit, because The Invisible Band is such a natural, instantly lovable, and thoroughly unforced record, it seems completely churlish to knock it. The opening "Sing" sounds like, since their inception, all Travis have been missing is a banjo; the florid "Flowers in the Window" harks back to McCartney's finest Beatles compositions; and the synth-led "Humpty Dumpty Love Song" lays Travis's sentimental heart bare. "I'd pray to God if there were heaven," sings Fran Healy on "Pipe Dreams," "But heaven sounds so very far from here..." And that's exactly why Travis are so popular; they're the humble down-to-earth boys from next door, still singing the simplest songs, still making the mundane sound beautiful. --Louis Pattison

I would argue that "The Invisible Band" is Travis' best album, though it's not "great" per se. Every song here is fun and catchy, even if the singer is a little questionable and the lyrics are usually not that interesting (they can be at times, however). The songs are usually pretty energetic and feature some lesser-used instruments (like the banjo on the first track), but sometimes they slow down a bit like on "Dear Diary". The best song here is easily "Side" which has "hit" written all over it. This is essentially the song that got me into this album. The instrumentation is pretty good, although it's not necessarily new. The singer's reminiscent of My Morning Jacker's Jim James at times. It's slightly a guilty pleasure, but not by a great measure. Overall, if you like pop rock then chances are you'll like this CD. Recommended!

This album has exactly what you are looking for: addictive melodies, great voice and inspired songwriting. Travis has a lot of soul. With recent interest in bands like Coldplay, Keane and Snow Patrol, (all of whom I think are wonderful), one cannot but feel that Travis implements the best of all worlds into their tableau.

A tremendous sophomore effort.......2005-08-02

While not dissimilar to other excellent acts such as Coldplay, Keane, and Pete Yorn, Travis have distinguished themselves as a band with their own unique style and sound. This, their 2nd album, is the best of their music: melodic throughout, with catchy tunes, solid lyrics, and tremendous guitar work that captures the listener from the first chords of 'Sing' to the fade-out from 'The Humpty Dumpty Love Song'.

If you buy an album once you know three or four or more of its songs are excellent, then I confidently recommend The Invisible Band to you.

Rating each song individually for one's ipod:
1. Sing, Side, The Cage, Afterglow and the Humpty Dumpty Love Song are each worthy of four to five stars
2. Pipe Dreams, Flowers in the Window, Safe, Follow the Light, and Indefinitely are three to four star songs
3. The balance are two to three stars each. The only poor effort is probably "Last Train", which is too plodding relative to its counterparts

The Invisible Band is basically a healthy mix of folksy, hopeful songs mixed with just the right amount of melancholy. Nowhere is this better reflected than in 'The Humpty Dumpty Love Song', which defines this mix perfectly. While this is the best of the album, the rest is well worth listening to repeatedly. Highly recommended.

Travis, sensational prodigy band.......2005-06-28

Travis is my favorite band. I love them even more than the shins and keane and weezer. I know all the words to all the songs and have all the albums, so I think i can call myself a travis expert. When I was looking at the reviews for this album, I was shocked to see the numerous four star reviews. Four stars?!?!? that's it? With all due respect, I believe this album deserve more than five stars!
The Invisible Band should probably be just called THE MAN WHO, PART TWO, because it really does pick up right where that album left off. For people who like to see bands evolve, they will of course be disappointed. But for those of us who craved more MAN WHO like material, this CD is brilliant. But I would like to take the time to clean a few things up, which have been overlooked.
I think some of the more obvious singles have eclisped the other songs, which are all polished works of art. SING is a great song, and the banjo is a great touch. But everyone knows about that song, so what about DEAR DIARY? DEAR DIARY is personally, my favorite song on the album. I'm usually not much of a slow song kind of person, but this song is simply amazing. The lyrics are very Travis-like, and sad, and fit right in on the album, and I love how the chorus is so melodious. They didn't even need to say the words and you could understand them, thats the kind of emotion on this piece. SIDE is of course a classic, portraying the frustration of 'the grass is always greener on the other side' kind of attitude. But the clever lyrics fit along the music so well, this song is a masterpiece. PIPE DREAMS: many people mentioned this song as one of their favorites. Personally, I think it is the weakest song on the album. At the beginning, it sounds really awesome and you are drawn in by the catchy melody. But i think after a while, it gets kind of repetitve. FLOWERS IN THE WINDOW is another general favorite. Everyone likes this song, but I don't think it compares to songs like DEAR DIARY. It does show the happier side of Travis, which makes it more interesting. THE CAGE is a song that most people don't like. I confess I didn't like it either, until one day I found myself humming the songs catchy tune. On first listen, it seems like it kind of sucks. But once you get to the chorus, you'll love it. SAFE is one of the strongest songs on the album. The song itself is great, but I challenge people to listen for the harmonic guitar in the background during the chorus. This song is really good. FOLLOW THE LIGHT is definantly the most solid song on the album. It's easy to listen too, and the lyrics are great, because everyone can get something out of them, and the song is really assuring...it makes you relax and it's the kind of song that makes you happy just listening to it, and if an artist can create a song like that, then they are brilliant. LAST TRAIN is a good song, I didn't love it at first because I thought it boring, but then I soon came back to it. The lyrics have the kind of hopeless sadness in them that make you feel so sad but keep coming back. AFTERGLOW is a good song, with a cool riff too. The chorus is safe and easy to listen too, this song doesn't challenge listeners, but it's still an excellent song. INDEFINITELY is one of the best songs on the album, one of the best travis songs ever, and the lyrics are sad but simply amazing. The pleading voice is so pleasing to the ear that this song will always be a favorite of mine. Lastly is the HUMPTY DUMPTY LOVE SONG. Many people raise questions about the strange title, but humpty dumpty is actually a simile for the guy's broken heart. This song gets especially great at the end and is a great song to listen to and fall asleep too. The extra hidden tracks in it are quite good as well.
Overall, every song on this CD is worth a listen and I want everyone to know that is CD is a five star CD, not a four!

Almost The Man Who, Part 2.......2005-06-14

Travis followed up their best album, The Man Who, with The Invisible Band. This cd is very similar to The Man Who, with almost the exact same feel to it.

Just like TMW, this album is quite solid, and can be played from start to finish quite easily, whether you're driving in your car, or just listening to this as background music around the house. In fact, my little 5 year old daughter absolutely loves 2 or 3 of the songs on this disc. It's a very friendly cd for all ages.

I do applaud Travis' effort here, they have created another great album. For anyone who loves The Man Who, and does not own this, buy it! This album is much better than their newest cd, 12 Memories. Travis does best when they keep their music simple, and melodic, and this is a perfect example of both. Fran Healy has one of the best voices in the biz!

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

I was really looking forward to the release of "Painting the Invisible" as I loved Vicky's first album. I'm pleased to say that this has not disappointed. It's slightly more "rocky" than the first album but as with the first the lyrics are superb. I bought this album for a friend and she rang me the next day to say how much she loved it. Also my 15 year old daughter has "borrowed " it and loves it. If I ever get it back I will continue to listen to the album and enjoy it more each time. Well done Vicky on an excellent album!

If you love modern worship music, but are tired of the endless remakes of the same songs, LOOK NO FURTHER! Vicky Beeching is a breath of fresh air in the worship arena. With original songs, great music and vocals, and solid theology, this is a seriously great album.

If you enjoyed her debut album (in the U.S.), "Yesterday, Today, & Forever," then you will really like this one. While this album has a different feel, it's still the same heart behind the songs. A heart that seems to only want to point others towards Christ.

Are you a fan of Matt Redman, Delirious, Tim Hughes? If so, you will love the sound of another solid Brit worship album.

What else can I say? Buy it, you will not be disappointed!

Movement to rock.......2007-07-20

It seems that Genesis P-Orridge has finished with Acid House for the moment. This album made a shift to rock, with traditional set-up and linear song structure. Makes for great listening, headphones or speakers.

Saw the CD release show, my first time to a Psychic TV event and it blew myself and friends away. Psychic TV made at least two new fans that night. One of the best shows I have been to, the main set went on for nearly three hours.

Douglas Rushkoff also has keyboard credits on this album, so check it out.

(PS: PTV3 has a new lineup and completely different style from PTV's previous incarnations. Embrace the change.)

I would have liked this more when I was 16.......2007-06-28

Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of experimental music of all kinds. I'm always ready and willing to dive into something which is unlike anything I've heard before. I'm also no stranger to Genesis P. Orridge's work, having heard all of Throbbing Gristle's albums, many Psychic TV albums, and having enjoyed his work with Pigface.



TG is a mixed bag for me. I appreciate the dynamic of the group and the balls it took to make and stand by the music when they did... but now it just seems trite. Only very occasionally did they manage to break through the gimmick of banging on things to make noise and create a piece of "musick" that affected me on anything more than a basic visceral level.



What I've heard of Psychic TV affects me the same way, only instead of making noise, they are writing the most obnoxiously meaningless imitations of pop songs imaginable. Whenever I'm reminded of them, I always wonder why so many people who are into underground type experimental music enjoy PTV so much. The only thing I can figure is that it's the corny pseudo-religious aspects of their philosophies. Whatever the case may be, it usually ends up sounding much like everything I've always hated about popular music, but done badly. The only exception is their album Trip/Reset, which I do still listen to on occasion. I really can't tell you why I enjoy that album and not the rest, but I think it has something to do with the consistency of mood throughout it. It's very mellow, and aptly named.



I bought this album anyway. I got it because of the quick sound samples I heard on Amazon. It sounded different from the things I hate about PTV, but some of it also reminded me of the things I liked about Trip/Reset. I thought it might be a new direction for the group.



Well.. it is a new direction for them. But unfortunately, hearing the songs in full turned out to be a tedious experience. The albums opener sounds like a dumbed down Johnny Rotten/PIL imitation. The second song was entirely forgettable. The third song sounded like a different version of the first. Maximum Swing, my favorite song off the album, starts out a little bit interesting, but quickly degenerates into an unbearably repetitive waste of bytes. The next two songs have a similar vibe as some of the tracks I liked off of Trip/Reset, but holy crap.. they just drone on and on with no point whatsoever. The rest of the album is entirely throwaway. Hookah Chalice and Just Because sound like retreads of tracks 1 and 5, and BB sounds like The Cult with an even more annoying and whiny singer. The last song is simply a joke. Sitar samples with stilted vocal drones. The song is 7 minutes long, but it sounds like it took less than a minute to "write".



Bottom line:



Most of these songs have some sort of potential, but they have no business being as long as they are, and Genesis sounds younger and more immature as he gets older.



On the other hand, this might be the "punkest" album I've heard in years. I guess I just grew out of the "punk" thing a long time ago.



If they would start focusing on actually writing music and stop trying so hard (and failing so hard) to be scary or edgy, they might be onto something. As it stands now, they are simply laughable to me.

wonders never cease! First I'll say that this is a cyber glam record, only it's very analogue, with a Ziggy Star Dust 2007 sound. I wouldn't have guessed a sound like this, a sound that I associate as an old rock sound, could sound so fresh, so right so now, i am of the avante guard variety when it comes to music, but some how this works! on glam pop rock estetics as well as pagan occultic modes of expression and also on the poetic museing level, there is no industrial sound here but definately a dose of psychedelic. I might also add that this is a great summer time record.

This new incarnation of Psychic TV, or PTV3, sounds great. Gen's new band sounds powerful, and their grooves can make your body move without conceding to rock stereotypes. This album sacrifices none of PTV's experimental side, or their songwriting side. On most of their albums, you have some experimental songs, and some songs that are more in the classic style of songwriting. On this album, it's experimental pop songs or poppy experimental songs all the way through (and I mean pop like early Pink Floyd or The Stones, not in a demeaning way). The way the band rocks and grooves draws one in, while the structures and textures sound fresh, new, and challenging.
I love all of their albums, and every phase of their evolution, but I think this may be their best. If you haven't listened to PTV lately, you're in for a pleasant surprise. If you haven't heard them at all, this is a great place to start.

The Invisible Man - Darrell Scott.......2007-01-11

After hearing Mr. Scott perform with Jeffrey Foucault and Chris Smither in the summer of 2006, I dove into his music library ear first. Finding great songs like "Heartbreak Town". On Mr. Scott's latest release Invisible Man, great songwriting continues. "Hank Williams Ghost", "There's A Stone Around My Belly" and "Looking Glass" show why he is so good. "Shatterd Cross" written by the late Stuart Adamson (Big Country) is hauntingly beautiful, reminding me of Mr. Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule with a country flavor.

His father is a musician, and he grew up around music and creativity. By 16, he was playing roadhouses in Southern California. After some dues-paying years in Toronto and Boston, where he attended Tufts University, studying poetry and literature, Scott finally made the move south to Nashville. Darrell is currently an active member of Steve Earle's Bluegrass Dukes.

The Songs: "And The River is Me" presents some of Scott's self-assessment: "They had this test back in high school / Said I had a career in forestry / Had aptitude for isolation / Yeah, I could live without T.V. / But me, I took the low road / My soul flies up into the night / I don't live in a tower on some fire road / But the human view is out of sight." As central as Scott's own songs are to the project, the spirit of the CD is also captured in the only cover "Shattered Cross," from his friend Stuart Adamson. The powerful song was recorded within a month of Stuart dying.

The Musicians: Recorded live in Scott's home studio, he has a familiar core of distinguished and experienced players like bassist Danny Thompson (Richard Thompson, Rod Stewart) and drummer Kenny Malone (JJ Cale, Johnny Cash). The album also features Richard Bennett (guitar), Dan Dugmore (pedal steel, guitar), as well as many others to a lesser degree (John Cowan, Sam Bush, Gabe Dixon, Andrea Zonn, Tim O'Brien, Minton Sparks). The Invisible Man was mixed by award-winning engineer Gary Paczosa.

Of Special Note: In his own "Looking Glass," we gain some more insight into Scott's head. He sings "Me and this song we got a lot in common / Neither knows quite how they end / Just follow along like a leaf on the river / Believe we always can begin again."

If I Could Change One Thing: If I were producing his music, I'd like to hear a little more fiddle, pedal steel, resophonic guitar, and even more vocal harmonies in his music.

Splits you in half and sews you back up........2006-08-08

Darrell Scott does writes great music. I don't think you can truly classify it. This maybe one of the best cd's ever recorded period. "Looking Glass" is probably one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. You need to buy this cd, pour a glass of wine, sit down and just try to absorb the cd as a whole. I feel this cd goes beyond music. It is truly a masterpiece painted with words. I can't thank you enough for what this cd has meant to me and my family.

A Different Path For Scott.......2006-07-14

This one is very different from his earlier work. It's somewhat topical - which is a departure for Scott, and listening to it it's like discovering some lost classic... 'Goodle USA' is like a melding of John Hartfords 'Goodle Days' and Lennon's 'Imagine' while 'Looking Glass' is a like a dead-on channeling of some unwritten classic Joni Mitchell song.

Full-band blend of country, folk, rock, and jazz flavors.......2006-07-05

Scott is a busy, busy man: an in-demand Nashville string player, vocalist and songwriter whose own "Live in NC" CD accompanied his father's "This Weary Way" just last year, and whose melodies appear on John Cowan's latest release. Scott's music echoes the broad experience he's gained playing with country traditionalists Suzy Boguss and Randy Travis, outlaws Steve Earle and Jim Lauderdale, and progressive bluegrassers Sam Bush and Tim O'Brien. His latest retains the electric approach of 2003's "Theatre of the Unheard," sometimes rocking harder than his writing actually requires. The jazz underpinnings of his songs, so prevalent on his trio-based live CD, are occasionally lost amid this full-band context and attendant studio touches.

Still, this is an intriguing blend of Scott's soulful vocals with country, folk, rock and Celtic flavors. The introspective "And the River is Me" pares back the electricity and stretches out to over six minutes, and the pairing of "There's a Stone Around My Belly" and "Shattered Cross" is emphatic in its picking and singing. Scott's lyrics interweave many biographical details, but his poetry often provides obtuse imagery rather than story or character study; more Dylan than Simon in many cases. The verbal impressionism is matched by the complexity of the arrangements, which may challenging for listeners who enjoy more straightforward exposition. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Very well played space rock with a sense of humor.......2006-04-24

This excellent 1973 release by Gong was the second installment in the Radio Gnome Trilogy. The lineup on this album is absolutely classic Gong and includes Tim Blake (VCS3 and mini-moog synthesizers); Pierre Moerlen (drums); Mike Howlett (bass); Daevid Allen (guitar, vocals); Didier Maherbe (woodwinds); Steve Hillage (guitar); and Gilli Smyth (space whisper, vocals). A great deal of the music on Angel's Egg is very spacey, which is driven largely by Tim Blake's atmospheric synthesizer work, along with Gilli Smyth's cosmic and heavily-echoed "space whisper". On the other side of the coin however, is some seriously virtuosic drumming by Pierre Moerlen and alternately spacey and heavy guitar work by Steve Hillage. Bassist Mike Howlett is no slouch either and his thunderous playing really drives everything along. As a general rule, this band was always comprised of superb musicians and their ability to swing from jazz rock, to space rock, to spacey free-form and back again always impressed me. In addition to virtuosity, this music exhibits the quintessentially whimsical Canterburian sense of humor, which is expressed through the surreal and "dadaist" lyrics of Daevid Allen. EMI did a great job of remastering this album, and the 14 page booklet features liner notes that "explain" the premise underlying the Radio Gnome Trilogy (up through Part II at least), and discusses topics including the Planet Gong; Master of the Spheres; Octave Doctors; Pot Head Pixies and the like. In addition to the original album, there are five bonus tracks including a single version of Other side of the Sky, the outtake Ooby-Scooby Doomsday or the D-Day DJ's got the DDT Blues, a vocal mix of Love is How Y Make It, and an early version of Eat that Phone Book Coda. Overall the bonus tracks are OK, and with the exception of the excellent Ooby-Scooby, do not add too much to the original album. Fortunately, EMI did not use copy control technology on this album, so playback problems should not be an issue. This album is very highly recommended along with Magick Brother (1970); Camembert Electrique (1971); Flying Teapot (RGI Pt. 1) (1973); and You (RGI Pt. 3)(1974).

Excellent remaster.......2005-07-06

Like most of Gong's albums, this has been released on CD a number of times. The CD's have varying sound quality. They weren't horrible, but they weren't great. This remaster has excellent, beautiful sound. It really brings out the atmosphere of the music.

The original album was 45 minutes long. 15 minutes of extra tracks have been added, bringing the CD to just under 60 minutes. I don't think that any of the bonus tracks are all that great. They aren't bad, they just don't make it worth buying this if you already have an older copy.

This remaster has a nice 8 page booklet, containing the lyrics and all the info on Gong and the Pot Head Pixies. The only thing missing is the blue artwork that was on the inside of the gatefold of the original LP cover.

This is just another great Gong album. It has some of the spaciest and wildest music of any of the Gong albums. It also has a number of great songs. While it is very spacy, it is also very coherent and holds together well. The only downside is that there are a few short silly songs.

This album is as good as You, but somewhat different. There are more songs, and they are a bit shorter than what is on You.

Gong released 3 albums in the 1970's dealing with Radio Gnome Invisible and the Pothead Pixies (Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg and You). In all, Gong released 5 to 7 albums in the 1970's (depending on how you are counting) before splintering. The leader of the band, Daevid Allen left, and the remainder became a jazz fusion band.

Throught the eighties, Allen would reform the space version of Gong, and the jazz version got renamed Pierrie Moerlen's Gong. The jazz band disbanded in the eighties.

Allen reformed Gong permanently in the late nineties, and the band has put out a number of studio and live albums. They are all very good. The last three studio albums have carried on the story of the Pot Head Pixies.
