Fun and Festive.......2003-06-17

A Latino friend of mine turned me on to this disc a few years ago, and still, to this day, I haven't tired of it. Once you get past the schmaltzy arrangements (the intro to each of the medleys sounds like it should be in a gay porno) and synthesizers, you too may be hooked on RAICES.
Each track is a lenghty medley from a different country or region, and Julio Iglesias, ever the consumate enteratainer, must be commended for singing in all these different languages.
The songs are catchy, even if you may hear only 30 seconds of it. In fact, as I type this review, I can't seem to get out of my head "addios, linda morena, addios, linda morena....linda...."
Even if the Italian medley misses the mark ever so slightly, the others completely make up for it. You'll be amazed at how well Julio even sings in French. His "Et Maitenant" is a real stand-out here.
This is the perfect disc to put on when you are entertaining, throwing a party, bbq'ing, etc. I have turned many on to this disc and highly recommend it.

Saved my sanity - Wonderful, wonderful album........1999-09-10

My daughter had a brain hemhorrage and I listened to this album 24 hours a day for weeks. The music kept me focused on something with an upbeat and truly wonderful sound. My daughter is doing great and thanks to Julio Igelsius, so am I.

This is a fine introduction to the strong cultural foundation that underlies much of Cuban popular music. The dynamic Grupo Afrocuba ensemble of dancers, drummers, and singers perform roots music of their northern Cuban home. On this release they sing and play sacred songs of their ancestor-revering Santeria religion, invoking the deities that guard the way to the afterlife, and allowing them to seek advice and to gain insights from those who have gone before. Afrocuba have also adapted the instrumentation of the sacred songs to cover more secular issues, inventing a new form, the Batarumba (named for the hourglass shaped bata drums). Raices Africanas is Afrocuba's first full-length recording since their founding over 30 years ago. They have brought their generations of experience into play on this CD, overlaying complex rhythms with memorable call and response singing. The drums rumble and mutter, then push and compel. I am Cuban, here since 1959, still a political exile. I am not, but 85% of my family are musicians, popular and classical. So, it has been rather easy for me to note that since the Castro revolution of 1959 Cuban music, actually all the arts, took a deep dive. For the worse. Extreme induced poverty and extreme socio-political repression are not conducive to creativity. This CD, however, shows that, at least, Santeria music, and its variations, has not only remained intact, but that it has flourished, likely because of the Africanization of Cuba, after 1959. Basically, Santeria music is drum music. Vocals are of secondary importance. Accordingly, this kind of music essentially depends on the quality of the percussion. This is a kind of sound, given the various drums used, guiros and guatacas, that does not usually record well. This CD, however, comes very close to the Sweet Sound. If you have not heard it, and you like good percussion, buy this CD. You will like it. Aché to all!

Raices Africanas is a great introduction to the African-Cuban musical tradition. The cd covers various styles of this tradition. In line with other African derived forms of music, the listener is able to hear the interplay between the instruments and the vocalist(s). The cd covers various styles of this musical tradition ranging from Rhumba to the male initiation anthem Abakua. This collection by Grupo Afro-Cuba is excellent for students of music, collectors of African derived music or people who just enjoy good music. The varied tracks in this collection invoke feelings of joy, pride and dancefloor fun. A must for anyone with a love for drumming and great music.

Amazing!.......2007-03-11

Traveling through Europe in Oct 2005 I dropped into a funky music store in Bern, Switzerland. Asked the gent in dreads at the counter what was the hottest thing he thought was out at the time. He asked, any genre in particular? No, I replied. I'm pretty eclectic - open to about just anything. I've just the thing for you. Left for minute or two and returned with "Entre Raices y Antenas" by Macaco (release May 2005). Never heard of them before. Let me sample the CD. I was simply stunned! The latin rock diversity of inner genres w/in "Entre Raices y Antenas" is amazing. Extremely well produced. A jewel! I don't want to spoil... you're missing a great world album.

Ex-Magia Animal, Dr. No, and Ojos de Brujo Macaco (Dani Carbonell) joined La Hermandad Chirusa, a band formed by talented musicians from Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, and Spain, to make his first solo record. Excelente de verdad es la manera mas facil de explicar la msica en este cd. Creo que Tono comprueba que el es el rey del merengue clasico y en este disco esta en su apogeo. Este disco es uno de sus primeros como solista y es muy bueno. Tiene todo tipo de merengue para que te rias y goces de los temas que te ponen a bailar. Las canciones exitosas son "Hasta que no pueda mas","Lola", Gozadera 2. Sin embargo, no hay ninguna cancion mala. Si eres seguidor/a del "Cuco" este disco no te decepcionara aunque es de 1992 te va a gustar.

Produccion increible.......2005-04-04

La produccion de este disco es de la calidad mas alta. La adicion de varios musicos tocando guitarra espan~ola, bateria, trombon, trumpeta, etc. le da a cada cancion un toque diferente sea este de flamenco o de salsa, que quiere decir que hay algo para todo el mundo. Ahora nunca se desvian mucho del rock hispano con estos ritmos.
Pero lo que le da el sabor a este disco es el cuatro. El uso de este instrumento cuando an~adido a la guitarra americana le da un sonido mas profundo y variado que tienen bandas con una guitarra, o hasta varias guitarras del mismo tipo.

Christian Nieves y su Puerto Raices dieron el palo con esta producción. El sonido....ni hablar. Escúchalo por tí mismo. El Cuatro Puertorriqueño demostrando lo mucho a que se puede llegar. Y Mónica....excelente voz, qué talento!!. Me encantó el cd. Muy bien lograda y buena variedad de ritmos. Soft y Hard Rock, reggae, ska, tropical y hasta flamenco!! No lo dejes pasar. Cómpralo que no te vas a arrepentir.

este album esta buenisimo, yo los escuche cuando estaba de vacaciones en Puerto Rico,la primera cancion que escuche fue enamorados y me gusto el ritmo de la cancion y la letras. cuando compre el cd me encantaron todas las canciones pero mis favoritas son las primeras 5. las primeras 5 hablan de amor y despecho y el resto tienen un mensaje positivo. ademas usan instrumentos que usan los jibaros en Puerto Rico como el cuatro.

Patricia Navidad has a gift..........2003-01-13

Her voice. Listening to her sing makes me sigh, a good sigh, one where the artist has successfully conveyed with her lyrics and voice the emotion and the meaning of the song. She has the ability to convey a lot of emotions with her voice. In her songs, you almost forget they're songs and you grow sad because you feel someone opening their heart and soul and it feels real. A lot of people critique Patricia Navidad because she gives herself a lot of credit for her singing ability, they say it's misplaced credit. I say they aren't really listening. Once i heard in a song a man named Leonard Cohen sing "I was born like this, i had no choice, i was born with the gift of a golden voice..." And indeed he was! Well, it wouldn't be arrogant nor narcissistic if she was to sing that in a song. It would just be true.

disco que he escuchado en toda mi vida!! no existe talento en esta persona, como cantante. La Banda Recodo a cometido un GRAN error al aceptar grabar con ella. Si se vende este CD, va a ser por arreglos, canciones faciles de cantar, y por la gran musica de esta banda tan popular. No recomendaria a nadie que comprara este disco!

It was given to me as a present and is the worst present I have received in my whole life!!! The voice is very fixed and soft. She does not sing as she thinks she does. She always comments on how good she sings...YEAH RIGHT!! My grandmother sings better. Way to soft to be singing this style of music...any kind of music!!!!
