While North American rap drowns in its own clichés, international artists are invigorating the genre with their own musical traditions. The Orishas, a Cuban group based in France, use Afro-Cuban religion to summon the spirit of hip-hop. Named for gods of Santeria, they came together in 1998 when members Yotuel and Ruzzo hooked up with Roldan and Flaco-Pro (a veteran of Sergeant Garcia) through a cultural exchange program between French and Cuban rappers. Collaborating with French hip-hop producer Miko Niko, they bring the attitude of Havana streets to the rest of the world, appealing to the Buena Vista Social Club crowd as well as the hip-hop heads. On their debut, A lo Cubano, the song "537 C.U.B.A." (their remake of Compay Segundo's "Chan Chan") gives new meaning to the term "old school." Yea baby, when the Cubans are out all others should go to school to catch up or just go home. This cats should embarrass all those Puerto Rican "artists" with their STUPID reggaeton trash, with their over repeated monotonous beats and over promoted junk, just hype(let's be fair and exclude Tego & Voltio). If Cuba were not under a communist tyranny that even controls the music that can be done, so it does not sound too "imperialist" (ask Arturo Sandoval) Cuba would rule in this genre the same way they did musically back in their capitalistic days. This Orisha guys (who got out of Cuba) are more than proof of the talent that is wasted just like everything else in Cuba right now.

It is mostly a fusion of Cuban flow and rap that reminds me of the mentality in some of the fusions of Dr. Dre with 70's American funk & r&b. However, as great as the music is, lyrically this guys are pretty ambiguous, non-understandable, meaningless, and dull. Lyrically they are pu$$ies, simple. There is a lot that should be said and they don't say, to be allowed back in Cuba to shoot their videos and use it as their back ground, the $$ are there for a reason. They are not representing or speaking for anyone, they got out and forgot the abusive slavish regime that bounds Cubans? Maybe it is the producers, I don't know. But I do know that in a genre as unrestricted as rap this is called being a PU$$Y.

When Orishas released this CD I was still living in Cuba. I used to listen to these songs all day long with my friends. Then I moved to US and what can I tell you? 537 Cuba is like an anthem for me because it really tells the reality about the feelings of Cuban people and perhaps every person that lefts his country likes us. On the other hand, these guys are amazing! The mixture of rap with traditional Cuban music is something original, out of this world. I don't like hip hop music at all, but Orishas are the exception. Buy this CD, it worth every penny, you won't be disappointed!

BENY MORE- "LO MEJOR DE LO MEJOR".......2001-07-02

BMG/RCA ARIOLA DE MEXICO has put together a great compilation of Beny More's Mexican tour (1945-1952) and also included some of his RCA Havana recorded sessions with his own band and that of Ernesto Duarte. It is great that "occasionally shelved" hit songs like "Las Posadas", "La Maricutana" and "Loca Pasion, by Beny with Mariano Merceron Orch. were included in this compilation. Although more of these rare sessions with Merceron should've been included, this is a "handy to have" compilation, 40 songs especially for those who are just getting to know "El Barbaro del Ritmo", Beny More and above all, the price is right!

More of a Greatest Hits than a Best of Collection.......2005-10-24

This is a great compilation of Marta's hits. It's not so much of a "Best of," but rather a collection of her promotional singles, most of which were hits. Serious Marta fans probably have these in their CD collections. However, there are three new songs and two remixes. The remixes are for "Desesperada" and "Soldados del Amor." For those of us who have followed Marta's work since she was a member of Olé Olé, hearing "Soldados del Amor" is great. Unfortunately it's not quite the same anthemic version of the early nineties, but a remix. Still, given how hard it is to find a compilation of Olé Olé's work that includes that song, it's great that it was included here. I wish Marta had included "Con solo una Mirada," a song that made the group truly famous in Latin America and which featured a fun video.

With regards to the DVD portion of the CD, the music video compilation is great. It includes just about every Marta clip I have seen except for "Vivo por ella," which was the only obvious omission from the whole compilation (but which is available in "Los Mejores Años de Nuestras Vidas" a previous compilation), and the video for "Arena y Sol" which I imagine might have been excluded to avoid problems with censorship in the U.S. The DVD also includes a candid interview with Marta and a sort of compilation of photographs over the years.

As for the new songs, they are each in a different style, including a politically charged hip-hop-esque number ("Sepárate"), a cool rumba flamenca ("Caradura") and my personal favorite, the ballad "Profundo Valor." The latter song was written by Marta for her sister Paz, who passed away recently. "Profundo Valor" is an ode to the memories we should keep of those special people we lose, but not before they have taught us much about how to live well. The song comes in two versions, and the acoustic version at the end of the song (appropriately tagged unto "De mujer a mujer") is beautiful. All in all, this is a great compilation, and a good way to introduce one's friends to Marta Sanchez's music. Hopefully, she'll keep generating more great music!

Here is someone who defines talent, style, beauty, class, and more. She truly is one of a kind. Her voice is everlasting and strong and she is as hip as can be. I wish we had more true talent like her around. I've followed Marta since she was with ole-ole and let me tell you her music just keeps getting better changing with the times. buy it she can sing and shes beautiful too!!!!

Galmaraz . . . it's difficult to find Marta Sanchez merchandise anywhere, I believe, so what a jewel this cd is!! The music is, well, wonderfully Marta . . . I never get tired of hearing her powerful vocals! The 3 new tracks are utterly fantastic, as well as the remixes. But what got me to buy this disc is the dvd . . . WOW!! The interview alone can make a grown man cry . . . for more. A must have for any fan of this timeless, ageless beauty!

Great singer, great career, great cd........2005-05-27

It's strange that just after 4 years and only one new studio album. Marta is releasing a new greatest hits album. Actually it would be difficult to choose between one and the other. The first one; "LOS MEJORES AÑOS DE NUESTRA VIDA" has more songs and the selection is better but you won't find any new songs. On this one you notice the effort just with the cover (one of the best cd covers that I've ever seen) and the fact that she has recorded 3 new songs including "PROFUNDO VALOR" a song that she wrote for her twin sister who died from cancer. The song has very emotional lyrics and had reached #1 on the spanish charting lists. Finally I have to mention that two of her biggest hits had been re-recorded for this production ("DESESPERADA" and "SOLDADOS DEL AMOR"). "DESESPERADA 2004" sounds much better than the original.
All this is if you know about Marta's career. If you don't know much. I can tell that she has an amazing voice and that her music goes from pop to dance and ballads to blues. She also happends to be the Spanish singer who works with some of the best producers in the business, including Paul Barry who usually works with Cher and other top singers and she even affords to record her productions in the U.S even though she lives in Spain and her music audience is almost all from there.
The DVD includes most of her videos and has an exclusive interview plus behind the scenes from her 1993 video "DESESPERADA". The DVD is good but it could have better like including all her videos or her latest video from "PROFUNDO VALOR"

Although Alicia V. has a very nice voice, she's not one of my favorites.
The only reason that I bought the CD : I like "El Ladron".

The song is an oldie. Was a popular song back in the 50's. It has a nice beat and reminds me of my childhood. My mom used to sing it.

I believe that independently that you like Alicia Villarreal or not... this disc is a disc that you cannot let have. It has a shaped feeling that touches feelings more sensible of your interior, when listening songs like "Rompeme, Matame", you will manage to feel that pain that transmits Alicia, intoning the letter of a woman who crys by the love of a man. You will not manage to avoid to feel the knot in the gargante that Alicia transmits skillfully when interpreting "Que seas feliz", as well as nostalgia that arrives deep with "Echame a mi la culpa", that without also telling to the successes "Acompañame" to duo with the Mexican singer Pedro Fernandez, who in the past sang the Spanish "Rocío Durcal" and "Enrique Guzmán", what to say "Te Quedó Grande la Yegua" and "Ladrón". That without telling to be disc to mess orderly of the year by the Magazine "Billboard", and numerous sales anywhere in the world. For that reason and "Soy Lo Prohibido" more... must be in your collection!

Dámaso Pérez Prado, un genio de la música tropical.......2006-11-17

Muchas personas que gustan de esta música son latinos, para ellos quiero dar mi opinión en español sobre esta recopilación de 40 canciones del incomparable maestro Dámaso Pérez Prado, en dos CDs de gran calidad sonora con versiones originales de todos los temas. Yo no soy más que un aficionado a la buena música y como tal simplemente puedo decirles que esta colección de temas es formidable. Obviamente, faltan algunas piezas importantes en la discografía de este músico, pero, para quienes gustan de coleccionar buenas muestras de la producción de artistas tan históricos como Pérez Prado, este doble CD es producto ideal. Demás está comentar los temas que figuran en esta colección porque la mayoría de ellos son muy conocidos y muy queridos, pero hay algunas interpretaciones que da ganas de escuchar una y otra vez como «Cerezo Rosa», «Skokiaan», «Norma, la de Guadalajara», «María Bonita» e «Historia de un amor», entre otras. Recomiendo este producto y concuerdo con uno de los amigos que ha opinado antes que este disco es muy digno del precio que cuesta y es una recopilación obligada en una buena colección de música tropical. Bienvenidos al Circo (Welcome to the Circus).......2005-01-03

Forget everything you know about Latin Rock...forget about Santana influences, ska, reggae, or anything you think latin rock is...because Circo will blow your mind. Think of a music mix between Talking Heads and Simple Minds, and a singer which is (Queen's) Freddie Mercury, (The Cure's) Robert Smith and Celia Cruz all role into one, and you end up with an eclectic cocktail call Circo. This is a new version of the album, that includes a bonus live cd, and let me tell you, if the music is good, the shows are an spiritual ejaculation experience, very hard to forget. I was in the show, and I was nothing less than wet. I recommend this album to anyone with an open mind, capable enough to enjoy erotic spiritualism and creative musicianship. Let's just hope that their second album "En el cielo de tu boca (In the sky of your mouth)", to be release on February 15, is just as good.
