Jennifer Peña delivers on the promise of her 1996 debut album with this spirited sophomore effort that blends lilting cumbia rhythms and pop classics. Backed by her polished band, Los Jetz, Peña sounds confident and focused on clever cumbia versions of the girl group and soul classics "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" and "Just One Look." Peña even manages a heated dance/rock version of Rick James's "Super Freak" featuring a guitar solo by Chris Perez. It's clear that Peña is being prepped for international markets, but she is equally effective on the more traditional Tejano tunes "Solo Por Ti," "Que Paso," and "Si No Me Quieres, Dimelo." Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. My wife and daughter didn't know about the Four Seasons but I did. When I told them I wanted to see the musical on stage, there was no interest so I bought this product and they heard it in the car. We went to the stage musical soon after and we have listened to the entire disk so many times I've lost track. I created a Four Seasons monster in my daughter. She's fifteen and has memorized most of the songs and sings along while we are driving somewhere.

Great music, but missing too much.......2007-07-04

I saw this play at age 16 with no idea who the Four Seasons were, but instantly fell in love with it. The problem is, this soudntrack cuts a two hour play into less than an hour on CD. Most of the dialouge is missing, only including enough to let each member of the group at least say something. I know many play soundtracks cut out dialouge, but what confuses me is why this stretches to the music as well. What is there is amazing, but I don't understand why most of the songs are cut to half, and sometimes even a third or fourth of their original lengths. I love this CD, just be aware that you are hardly getting any story, just clips of lots of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons songs. So, great music and dialouge, just not enough for a musical soundtrack.

The big question about this soundtrack is: how's she doing? No, not Beyoncé, silly--how's Jennifer Hudson doing? And more specifically, how's she doing by "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"? To this reviewer's ears, she doesn't top the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday--or even Lillias White, from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. On the other hand, Hudson isn't afraid to pullout all the stops, whipping herself up into a total diva frenzy as the song getscaught up in an unstoppable crescendo. As for Beyoncé, she adapts superbly to the 1960s- and 1970s-tinged material, though "Listen"--a ballad that also appears on her own B'day album--lacks the spirit that infuses the classic tunes on this album. For make no mistake: this is hard-hitting, high-octane music, infused with an urgency and passion that makes most contemporary R&B albums sound timid. When Hudson and Beyoncé duke it out on "It's All Over," or when the "One Night Only" ballad gets reinvented as the dance-floor burner "One Night Only (Disco)," the sheer energy flowing from the speakers is transporting.

This music, this movie, this Script is so awesome! An amazing portrayal of a struggle for stardom. Beyonce' is beyond beautiful and "represents" the icon "supremely" (sorry...had to go there!). The music is so well written, I love each and every track! Enough has been said about Jennifer Hudson, she has won her due, but ALL the actors did an amazing job.

Great music from the movie. My only complaint is it's literally pulled from the movie, so it's a little weird to listen to it while not watching the movie, the singing dialog from the movie. Jennifer Hudson is the highlight throughout the album.

I love this CD...it takes me right through all the emotions and action of the movie. Nothing is left out, all of my favorites are included even the less commercial cuts like Eddie Murphy's "Jimmy Got Soul" which gives the CD a well rounded feel.

Dreamgirls IS the best musical since GREASE... HANDS DOWN!! great songs and great performances by Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Jamie Fox, Anika Noni Rose, and especially Eddie Murphy... that boy did his thang acting and definatley singing. i almost forgot that eddie murphy had a really good singing voice...

of course the showstopper "and i am tellin u (im not going)" is my favourite song. im only 23 and im familiar with the original version performed by jennifer holiday. i love the original but to me J-Hud Killed it!!!! i perfered her version just because it was heartfelt and she performed it OUTSTANDINGLY in the movie. i cried in the theaters when she performed it... STANDING OVATION!!!!

my other favourite track is "i meant you no harm/jimmy's rap". i love the beginning of the song. eddie murphy SANG that song. then it threw me off when he started rappin. that rap was too funny!

Though her voice is good; she should stick to Pop music. Too many ballads and the soul searching lyrics. Lyrics not appropriate for her. She sings about sadness and disappointment when we all know her life is so different. The songs did not match her or what she represents to Latinos and women. Jennifer should continue to do Pop music and upbeat tempos and forget about the torch songs of pain and abandonment. Not a good match. What were her producers thinking. Hello!!!! Wasted my money. I never listen to it again.

Empiezo en comentar que cuando salio este CD a la venta pense que con el apoyo de Marc Anthony este proyecto iba a ser un exito. Desgraciadamente me equivoque. Bueno, la colaboracion de Marc Anthony es evidente en las canciones seleccionadas para este CD. Desafortunadamente la voz de JLO no tiene ese sentimiento para cantar estas canciones de amor. Yo no se si se precipitaron al terminar este CD porque yo tengo el DVD del primer concierto de JLO que fue grabado en la Isla del encanto y la interpretacion de varias baladas por la sexy JLO fue encantadora y ahi si escuche sentimiento cuando cantaba. Tal vez la Diva se sintio sentimental estando en Puerto Rico. En este CD no hay una cancion que me haya hecho sentir WOW. Pudo haber sido porque el Espanol no es la lengua principal de la JLO. Asi que te recomiendo que escuches este CD antes de comprarlo para que no te quejes despues de haber pagado precio completo.

To be honest with you, I did not like her English songs. She sings better in Spanish. I was impressed to hear that all her songs on the CD "Como Ama Una Mujer" were all knock-outs. I heard her husband Marc Anthony, in the back ground. I know his voice anywhere, and it sounded terrific. She can go a long way if she continue singing her songs in Spanish, even if she mixes a little bi-lingual It would be even better. I love them both and God has bless them together. And this CD I feel that it was the root of there love for each other and a new beginning. No words can express how I feel about them and their songs.

When I had first heard of this musical, I had thought that it could not possible be for real. When I actually heard this cd, I had thought that it could not possible be for real. This is the funniest, smartest, crassest and most original remake of movie that I have come across in a very long time. "What the F*** Was That?" will be on my list of top 100 songs for a very long time. Anyone who loved the movies this is based on, or who just have a place in their heart for comic gold, need to have this cd in their collection.

I Have Never Heard Anything Worse.......2007-07-11

OK, so after reading this review, I'm sure that most people will think that I'm one of those musical theatre elitists that just "don't get it" when a show is just trying to be fun. But, believe me, that couldn't be further from the truth. I can appreciate that musical theatre is supposed to speak to a wide range of tastes and styles and that a show like Evil Dead is not supposed to be taken too seriously. I also get it when a show is trying to be a clever parody (i.e. Urinetown) or just a fun and light-hearted piece of eye and ear candy that doesn't require a lot of deep thought or heavy emotion. I also understand that not all composers/lyricists are seasoned professionals and, believe it or not, I actually support and encourage new and start-up writers and embrace all of their novice mistakes, as long as they don't all occur in the same place at the same time. So, believe me, I get it.

But, sometimes, even with all of this forgiveness in my heart, there are some scores that are simply atrocious. I'm afriad that Evil Dead falls into that category. First, the music: In my mind, a musical score has to be either melodic or original. In the best cases, you have both. In the worst cases, you have neither. In this case, you have nothing. Just nothing. The songs don't say anything - musically or otherwise. They have all been done before, and they are all really, really, bad. I just don't know how else to say it. But the worst part of this unforgivable score has got to be the lyrics. When I say that they are unlistenable, I am not exagerating. These are the worst lyrics I have ever heard committed to CD. Seriously, they are that bad. I couldn't find one redeeming moment. Picture rhymes that a 6-year old might come up with - like trying to rhyme "would be" with "groovy", or "girl" with "squirrel". Yes, I'm afraid these are real examples. The lyrics, in fact, are so bad, that I am not completely confident in my review of the music because I couldn't even get through some of the songs. I shudder at the thought of ever going back to listen to this monstrosity again.

The performances are awful - but that I can forgive. After all, this was not a Broadway show and the actors, in all fairness, had no decent material to work with. I do like the concept, so please don't think that this is the problem. In fact, the story is why I even picked up this CD to begin with. My entire problem is that this is the worst score I have ever heard and, because of that, I found myself constantly infuriated at the fact that these composers were given any funding at all to stage this show - clearly based on the draw of the concept - when there are far better unknown composers out there with real talent who just can't get a break.

So, in summary - I encourage everyone reading this review to continue to support off-Broadway theatre and upstart composers and even shows that are not completely perfect. Just don't support this one. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh. But the producers who mounted this show and released this CD really don't deserve your money. There's no nice way to say it.

The cast album to 'Evil Dead" is almost as much fun as Little Shop of Horrors! It's a tongue in cheek spoof all the way with some really fun music to go along with it. Loads of different styles of music and plenty of fun for all!

A great recording of a fun show. Don't look for earth shattering lyrics, or unique music. Do look for a fun time - and be sure to read along with the booklet in the jewel case if you are an Evil Dead the Musical newbie. Don't listen with young children in the vacinity.

If you've seen this show in New York or Toronto, you will love having this soundtrack. If you haven't seen the show but are a fan of the original movies, I'm pretty sure these songs will still be hilarious. If you're like me, it will live in your cd player for several weeks or more.

I wish I could go see this show again, but listening to these songs takes me right back to that enjoyable yet blood soaked night!

Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-05-07

The first time I heard this artist was on an instructional DVD for hot stone healing. I couldn't believe how hauntingly beautiful her voice and the music was. I wanted more and had to find out who she was. I did and immediately purchased the CD. The same song repeats throughout the entire CD, with minor variations and for some that may not be what you are looking for. It is very nice for a healing practice or meditation or if you are looking for beautiful vocals that follow you through your day.

I first heard this CD in my prenatal yoga class -- it was perfect for our meditative portion of the class. I loved it so much I used it during the birth of our son and it became his favorite cd for getting to his restful place before bedtime. At 2, he now asks for his "yoga music" almost nightly which gives me a chance to enjoy it and take me to a peaceful place with him as I rock him to sleep.

I like Jennifer Berezan's recordings. "Returning" is something I stumbled on when purusing used CDs at a store. I often listen to it when I'm going to sleep at night. I have also played it during gatherings of people for contemplative and shared prayer. It helps me center myself and connect to the energy of life and love.

Beautiful, Transformative Chant .......2007-01-09

This beautiful CD was recorded partially in Malta, in a man-made underground chamber designed exclusively for its perfect acoustics. The result is a warm, ethereal drone that reverberates throughout the hour-long chant, perfectly complemented by the goddess chants recorded over it.

Each chant comes from a different religion and culture. There is a song to Yemaya, the Yoruba goddess of the sea and rebirth; a Navajo chant to Mother Earth (my personal favorite); A Buddhist mantra to the Bodhisattva of Compassion; and a beautiful line of Alaap singing, a form of Hindi song-prayer. Each voice in this recording is pure and emotionally on-target, and nothing about any of their roles in this piece seems tacked-on or forced.

The combination of all of these elements is soothing and nurturing, just the way a piece centering on "returning to the mother of us all" should be. I recommend it to anyone with a meditation practice, healers, and even just anyone who needs help relaxing at night.

Transformative inner journey.......2007-01-06

Returning is a magical experience. As the chants echo, you are transported on a transformative inner journey. I use this CD for healing work, ritual and ceremony, and women's circles. It is hypnotic and profoundly beautiful. It reminds us all that what we long for is a return to the Earth Mother. This music cradles you in Her embrace.

Lovely & Morose.......2007-07-16

I like Leonard Cohen, I like Jennifer Warnes...I even like the CD, but it's definitely got problems.

This particular CD was manufactured in Germany, and its poor quality really surprised me. I like playing music a little loud, but to get just a middle line volume (like 50% on most CD's) I had to turn the volume on the player to 100% just to get the mid range on this CD. That was not good.

I was familar with the material on the CD because I had a cassette version from when "Raincoat" was first released in the late 80's. I remember it got lukewarm reviews at the time. "An artistic success, but commercial failure" was the general tone. Being a dedicated Cohen fan from way back, I thought the reviewers must be crazy.

Having matured a bit since then, I now understand what they were talking about. Leonard Cohen is an interesting, extraordinary artist (it's recently been said that Phil Spectre held a loaded gun to his head during a studio session saying, "I love you, man" to which Cohen replied, "I hope so.") Anyway, Cohen is the most successful "sensitive" male singer (I'm using "sensitive" interchangeably with "spiritual" these days) & writer in the contemporary cut throat commercial scene. He is uncompromising & often swims against the social current.

On one recent song he states "I'm neither left or right," but there is certainly a conservative element in his work that I personally have found just a little bit irksome--but on the other hand, his imagery that often combines sexuality with religious themes, has really touches a fundamental chord of beauty in the heart. Another element I can relate to is that LC's lrics don't shy away from brutal self-revelation. Cohen never tries to gloss over the basic inequality & unfairness of life with empty homilies or platitudes.

However, there is a downside too.

Cohen has a tendency to go overboard with social critique & ego-centric bitterness. These are not qualities particulary useful in the pop scene, particularly not in today's resurging political conformity. Despite these observations, Leonard Cohen has consistently worked to forge his success & his songs regularly play on the air. If not exactly a "super star," he is just a breath away. If he WERE a super star, it could well be that his music would have lost some of its depth.

Judy Collins brought both herself and Cohen into the pop mainstream with her beautiful rendition of "Suzanne." From then on Collins' star rose & she often performed her friend's work. In contrast to Collin's light & delicate voice, Cohen has a deep & mournful sounding voice that only accentuates the darkness of his own material. Although Cohen's LP's weren't consistently popular, his music was popularized many other artists, such as Jennifer Warnes.

This CD contains some of Cohen's most wonderful tunes: "Famous Blue Raincoat," "Song of Bernadette," and "Joan of Arc." Unfortunately these great tunes are sandwiched between more self-pitying sounding songs such as "Came So Far for Beauty" and "The Singer Must die."

Jennifer Warnes has a great voice, but it doesn't convey the light, airy quality of Judy Collin's. Collins can sing morose material without it sounding...well, morose. Warnes' deeper voice & delivery does not overcome the self-involved bitterness that characterizes some of the songs. That being said, I don't think even Judy Collins would have helped this CD out. It's a fine CD for people really into melancholia.

People who aren't into Leonard Cohen (and I mean REALLY into LC's work) or huge Jennifer Warnes would probably be disappointed..

Why not ask for more?.......2007-06-18

Can you believe this album is twenty years (+) old? I can't at all. In one instant the time passing has seemed interminable, and in another instant it seems to have passed like the blink of an eye. I remember how I heard about this album. I saw Joan Baez perform at Carnegie Hall in the fall of 1987 and she sang "Famous Blue Raincoat" in her concert. I ran to a record store the next day and, appropriately fevered, bought this album. I was excited because I was a fan of Jennifer Warnes from her Arista Records days ("Right Time of the Night" and "I Know a Heartache When I See One"), and while I knew of her connection to Leonard Cohen (she is credited as background singer Jennifer Warren on Cohen's 1973 album "Live Songs"), finding her singing a full album of Leonard Cohen's material was enough to send my young soul into orbit.

My initial impression on first listening was that "Famous Blue Raincoat" and "Joan of Arc" (duet with Leonard Cohen) were the album's peak moments. Time has not diminished that belief. But the program overall is brilliant as are the performances and production. Jennifer Warnes' vocals do these songs justice. But if you listen to any of her earlier albums, you will find that she enhances the quality of all of the songs she sings. This disc is as exciting to listen to twenty years later as it was when it was first released.

P.S.: Just read that an expanded version of this album is to be released in the near future. How fortunate for us!

Quite possibly the best album of the 1980s.......2007-05-16

Forget every bad Jennifer Warnes top ten hit or ill-conceived duet you've ever heard.

I first bought this album, shortly after it came out, because I was a self-styled audiophile-in-training and all the boutique audiophile magazines raved on incessantly about the production quality, Warnes' voice, and only incidentally, Cohen's music and lyrics. As usual, the really astonishing thing was mostly ignored - the odd and indelible combination of Jennifer Warnes' highly accomplished and almost preternaturally controlled voice with the utter weariness and inventiveness of Cohen's lyrics, all of it put to some exquisite, adult pop music.

This album should come with a warning: "Kids, Don't Try This At Home." This really is powerful stuff about grown-up themes, emotions and experiences, told from a jaded but still slightly hopeful, adult point of view. Something uncanny happened when this album was made, a true "synergy" (God I hate that word, but...)that transforms musicians and material into something they'd never been before. Jennifer Warnes became a true artist, and Leonard Cohen became a true human being. Practically everyone I've played this CD for in the ensuing years has gone right out and bought their own copy.

I can say without exaggeration that I still listen to this CD every week, after twenty years, and I can't wear out my enjoyment of it. It still retains some reminder of the "shock of the new", and it really hasn't become dated. I'm still moved by the sweetness and the steel of Warnes' voice, and I still shake my head at the subtlety and richness of the lyrics.

Like Joni Mitchell at her height ("Blue", "For The Roses"), The Roches first two albums, Rickie Lee Jones at her best ("Pirates") and most of everything Shawn Colvin's ever done (except for most of her new album), this is one of those times when you can call popular music "art". It's also a great introduction to Warnes" later, also episodically wonderful albums ("The Hunter", "The Well").

And for those of you whose interest has been piqued, check out her website to see why the fact that this CD is out of print is maybe not such a bad thing.

For the Love of Leonard.......2007-05-07

There are few distinctly individual voices in the realm of Jennifer Warnes,I can hear her from the soul. This oldie but goodie relights my wildsoul and need for truth in everything. Joan of Arc is five layers of love song, everyone of the songs reflect the wonderful hearts and minds of both she and Leonard CohenLoved it.

I bought this primarily for one song, the title track, Famous Blue Raincoat, and it is still my favorite cut on the CD. But all of the songs are worth a listen and Leonard Cohen even does a guest turn on Joan of Arc.
For those of you who are used to Cohen's deeper, masculine voice, it may be harder to find Warnes as accessable...but I actually like her rendition of Famous Blue Raincoat as much as the Cohen original. Listen closely and you'll hear how she takes his songs and makes them unique, not just copies of his.

Actress Jennifer Lopez's debut album fails in its attempt to provide a worthy musical backdrop to her much-discussed diva-esque image. Over the course of 13 songs, On the 6 displays barely a glimmer of the verve, poise, and sensuality of her screen performances in the likes of Out of Sight. With little vocal talent to rely on, Lopez generally seems content to ape Madonna's middle register like any happy radio listener. Similarly, several of the tracks here seem too rooted in the Latin-lite clichés of "La Isla Bonita." With practice--more Lopez CDs will surely follow in the wake of 6's success--the star might develop into a singer worth reckoning with, but for now she stands as a wonderful actress and a musical artist with an unengaging album to her name. --Rickey Wright

her career is so similar to paula abdul it's not even funny! Both started out dancing. Paula worked with janet jackson in the mid 80's and appeared in her videos, J LO worked with janet in the mid 90's and appeared in a video of hers. Paula Abdul tried her hand at music in the late 80's as a dance-diva and J LO did the same thing in the late 90's. Both of their debut albums Forever Your Girl and On the 6 sold well, and better than their follow up albums. Early 1991, Paula Abdul released Spellbound and early 2001 J LO released J LO. Both of them had strong first singles and their albums fell off the charts pretty fast although both managed to reach 3 million(instead of 8 million and 5 million like their debuts) and have a lot of hits from their albums. Let's not forget to mention that paula briefly did acting as well and J LO is also an actress. This Is Me Again didn't make a dent in the charts and Rebirth was the final nail in the coffin in 2005, just like paula's Head Over Heels. The first single from their final albums both had good videos(My Love Is For Real & Get Right) but by then it was too late and the public already had enough of them. I expect to see J LO release a compilation album by 2010 and appearing as a host or something 10 years from now.

J-lo's best album, before J-lo. This *was* her then!.......2006-08-07

I am one of J-lo's biggest fans, but the albums after this are one disappointment after the next. Luckily she's redeemed herself more in talent with the most recent album release, but this very first one had the true latino influence before she started 'forgetting' which minority she was representing in order to get more bucks. This CD expresses true singing talent, amazing tearful ballads (Marc Anthony, for crying out loud!!) and that wonderful feeling of sitting on an island beach. Even the photos of J-lo were sexy inside. This is truly art.

Oh, if only there were a Golden Throats Vol. 5!.......2006-06-21

Unhealthy both as role model and performer, our limitedly talented Ms. Lopez, not content with her skilled acting chops in 1999, jumped on the Latin explosion bandwagon with the help of her label cronies and her indisputable celebrity factor. Only, the results were about as relevant to Latin music as a toadstool stoned on a bottle of Palo Viejo. Without an iota of a hint of vocal skill, she squeaked and heaved and shrilled her way through a spit-shine production of second-rate disco tunes even Andrea True laughed at. What made it so utterly joyless is/was its lowest common denominator: it's completely phony, resulting in the most head-scratchingly successful debut of that year, maybe decade [take that, Jewel]. Monetarily, it made sense - at platinum plus, she was able to seduce a million or so impressionable kids into buying into the web of deceit - but as art...well, I suggested, then, that she get on that 6 train and head home. Or at least toward Hollywood. Instead she sojourned her way back into the studio a few more ear-blood inducing times. This was not only the worst CD of 1999; it was the insult of that year. My grade: D

Her Debut Wasn't Bad At All.......2006-05-21

Looking back at 1999 when Actress Jennifer Lopez came from nowhere and unexpectedly released a pop album, and it sold very well and gave here both hit singles and later a few more albums to her credit, however it is "On the Six" that undoubtly is her best album, also her most varied and personal. Now in 2006 it could be odd to actually look back 7 years and make a fair judgement on this one. Jlo has been seen all over the celebrity world and her latter albums weren't that good actually, at times some of her songs were even annoying, But in 1999 she was good and so was her debut album. Now only there's plenty of variation, there's also very good producers like Puff Daddy, Trackmasters, Daniels, Jenkins, Jerkins and Emilio Estefan Jr. This singing project, as it was supposted to be, was really a well thought one and it shows. Say what you want about her inadequate voice, but she compensate that with great charachter and great song list.

It starts with the hitsingle "If You Had My Love" that is the best song on the album together with single #2 "Waiting For Tonight", Lopez calls her music Latin Soul. Basically it's R&B songs with a latin flavour. Both songs are very strong with cathcy melody and hooks. "Should've Never" is a ballad, rather bland. "Too Late" is a midtemo that is so so. Puff Daddy produced R&B-Hip Hop song "Feelin So Good" was another hit and Latin sounding "Let's Get Loud" with backround choirs is also pretty good. "Could This Be Love" falls flat and proves ballads is not her strongest part, but the next balled in spanish with her now husband Marc Anthony "No Me Ames" is surprisingly good. "Open Off My Love" sound alot like "I'm Glad" a latter song of hers. "Promise You'll Try" is a suger sweet ballad. "It's Not That Serious" another uptempo Latin-Soul and "Talk About Us" yet another bland ballad. It closes with a spanish version of "Waiting For Tonight" which is pretty fun, if you know spanish.

Overall, I could have lived without half of the ballads here, but the uptempo songs which is her strenght are all catchy and entertaining. "On The Six" is a good album, her best actually. It's varied with many diffrent producers and the hit singles are strong. It's not quite perfect, but defenitely over par. Wether you like JLO or not, don't judge her latter album with this one, Back in 1999 she was still interesting and this album is a pleasant surprise from the new pop diva in town. 4/5 stars.

The Producers was the vehicle that first proclaimed Mel Brooks's decidedly singular comic vision as a film director in 1968. At the time, the world may not have been entirely ready for the depth charges of hilarity he unleashed; but more than three decades later, it seemed almost foreordained that the film's retooling as a full-fledged musical--directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman--would become the smash hit of the 2000-2001 Broadway season (even before opening at the St. James Theatre in April). Brooks is, of course, no stranger to the Broadway musical genre or to songwriting, but skeptics might find themselves taken by surprise at just how outrageously well all the threads come together for the new show.

The film's absurd core vignette--the infamous "Springtime for Hitler"--if anything gains a few notches in hilarity when framed by a character-rich musical that comes off as both parody and valentine in its mimicry of Broadway's "golden age." Brooks (with the help of idiomatically expert arrangements by Glen Kelly) has cooked up a variety of numbers constituting a virtual primer of old-fashioned American musical comedy styles (there's even a toying with Cabaret-style decadence), but they're always coated with an extra layer of zaniness. In fact, the whole show becomes a Chinese box of parodies within parodies. But what really gets the whole mix working is a surefire cast headed by Nathan Lane playing Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick doing a delightfully nebbish turn with delusions of misplaced glory as his sidekick, Leo Bloom.

From his first big number (musically winking at Fiddler on the Roof), Lane hungrily lays claim to the role, undaunted by his formidable predecessor, Zero Mostel. Even on disc, you can visualize his over-the-top mugging as a dethroned "king of Broadway" who was "the first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter." Comedy, as they say, is all about timing, and that's exactly what Lane gets right. His interactions with Bloom, Franz Liebkind (Brad Oscar), and Roger de Bris (Gary Beach) are priceless, even when only in sound. As for the tunes, Brooks crafts a number of truly memorable ones--don't be surprised to find yourself horrified as you hum along with "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop" and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler." --Thomas May

This recording is great! I saw the play in november and loved the music. I bought the CD a little later and i am still listing to it. The cast are all great singers and did a great job. The songs are witty and catchy and never get old. You should listin to this.(Warning:See the movie or the play before you listin to this, you might hate it if you've have not.)

Spring Time for "The Producers".......2005-12-13

While I'll abmit that Nazi regemes and Hitler are probably some of the least funny thing in the world...i have to admit that the words to Springtime for Hitler are hilarious, just like the rest of the songs on this cast recording.

While "The Producers" Is not as musically complex or mature as other "Best Musical" scores of recent years (Spamalot, Avenue Q, Hairspray,) It is funnier than all of those put together. Nathan lane And Matthew Broderick Are perfectly cast in their roles and Caddy Hoffman is great, and when Ulla belt, she Belts!
the rest of the cast is amazing.

As for the song I can't think of one that I don't like, They are all great!

I would hope that the fact that the show makes light of Hitler doesn't turn you off, because you would be missing somthing great.

Mel Brooks = Brilliant.......2005-12-12

My theatre group went to New York two years ago, adn we did a marathon 4 shows in 3 days. Each show got progressively better, finally culminating in seeing Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick's final performance of "The Producers." I have been a fan of Brooks' since I saw "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" 5 years ago. Naturally, I was beyond excited to see the show he made of his most brilliant film.

I was not disappointed. It was funny, racy, and downright fabulous. I bought the soundtrack at intermission and have been listening to it ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves musicals. Lane and Broderick play off each other perfectly, Cady Huffman has one of the best belting voices I've heard in ages, and the songs are actually FUNNY.

Aside from raving about one of my favorite shows, I would like to address the comments made about the show downplaying Hitler and being racist towards Germans. In no way does this show downplay Hitler's terrible deeds. Bialystock and Bloom make several comments about how disgusted they are about the play- the fact that it is so insulting to our sensibilities is the reason why it was chosen in the first place. I am Jewish and have studied the Holocaust and WWII for years. I was not offended in the least, nor did I feel the Brooks was promoting or trivializing Hitler's war crimes. Brooks himself is Jewish for god's sake.

Second, I see nothing in the show that is racist towards Germans. Yes there is a Nazi in it who is German. How is that racist? The Nazis went all over the world after WWII- it is possible that several ended up in New York City. And no one will argue that some Nazi's were German. You might as well say that the show is discriminatory towards Swedes, or gay directors, or producers, or the countless number of things made fun of in the show.

This is by far the funniest thing I have ever seen. I got the chance to see it on broadway with Lane (unfortunatly not Broderick) and most of the original cast. For some reason, certain people seem to think this play is racist. First off, the whole thing is pure 100% SATIRE. I'm 15 and I can realize that. Also, are you aware that Mel Brooks is jewish? Yeah, so lighten up. I realize what Hitler did, and it will never be forgotten. But my God, get a sense of humor. In case you never saw the play, the Bavarian guy breaks his leg (making "It's bad luck to say good luck on opening night funny) and is replaced by the gay director for the song "Springtime for Hitler". ITS HILARIOUS! BROOKS MADE HITLER A GAY GUY! And why do you think he did that? Geeze... just lighten up!

So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!

The fourth in the series of Top 40-tracking compilations strikes a good balance between pop radio played-to-death singles, R&B standouts, and straight-up rock chart stormers. The beginning of the disc is packed with requisite teen pop; however, the Britney Spears offering "(You Drive Me) Crazy" will probably disappoint those who were hoping for the more recent "Oops!... I Did It Again"). Mandy Moore - Candy: Great song and great singer. I always did like Mandy Moore's music. A

Eiffel 65 - Blue: This song was awesome; that is all I can say. I loved the song and the music video. This is one of the best songs on the cd. A+

Sonique - It Feels So Good: It depends on my mood with this song. I like the singer but this song was overplayed. C

Lenny Kravitz - I Belong To You: This wasn't one of Lenny's best songs and this song was 2 years old at the time this was released but it is catchy none-the-less. B

Savage Garden - I Knew I Loved You: I liked this song; I danced to it at my wedding reception. It is very romantic. B+

Joe - I Wanna Know: Like the previous song, this is another romantic song that brings back memories. A-

Aaliyah - Try Again: I miss Aaliyah; this was a woman who could sing and the songs were meaningful. I loved this song and I do refer to it from time to time when I am talking with friends. A+

Jennifer Lopez - Waiting For Tonight: This was a good hit for Jennifer. I have to admit the music video was better. B

Montell Jordan - Get It On Tonite: Please don't get it on tonite, this was the second song I didn't like on this cd. Even the music sounded bad. F

Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals - Steal My Kisses: An average song, have no complaints. C

Smash Mouth - Then The Morning Comes: This was another great hit off of their cd. It is catchy and plain addictive. A+

Train - Meet Virginia: I am not a big fan of Train but I did like this song. I liked it the first time I heard it. A-

Macy Gray - I Try: This is the one of two songs I liked by Macy Gray. It is a shame she went downhill after this cd but I still like this song. A

Hanson - This Time Around: I have no comment on this song. Hanson should have given up with the cd previous to this. They don't deserve an F they deserve a Z-

blink-182 - All The Small Things: This was a great song. The beat and the way it went was good enough to buy the cd. A

Vol. 4.......2006-07-18

A step up indeed was Vol. 4 in the Now! series, for with this contribution we recieve almost an entire album of quality songs with very few 'skipable' tracks. Sadly, the first track is 'skipable'. The Backstreet Boys offered some very decent tracks on their sophmore album, but the single 'Larger than Life' was not one of them. It's regurgitating pop/shlop at it's worst and should be avoided at all costs. And to think they had so many good tracks on that one CD alone. Britney serves up a great pop song with Crazy, although the 'Stop' remix for the film was better. Marc Anthony has never been my favortie latin artist, but I have always loved 'I Need to Know' so despite my distaste for Anthony himself, I don't skip this track.

Superstar Mandy Moore, who at this day and age is better known for her acting than her singing, serves up her debut single 'Candy' here and shows us that pretty face aside this girl can sing too. Out of all the pop queen diva's, next to Christina of course, Mandy has the purist voice, deffinatly surpassing Britney and that 'shoot myself if I ever have to hear her sing another song' Jessica Simpson.

There are some questionmarks here and they come in the form of Eiffel 65 and Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, both of which turn out tracks here that are less than impressive. I never was a far on 'Blue' and until this disc had never heard of 'Steal KIsses' but neither track makes me want to listen. I label these 'Skipable'...

I actually like 'It Feels So Good' mostly becasue it's not average and while it takes a little getitng used to it's still worth the listen. Finally a Lenny Kravitz song I like!!! 'I Belong to You' is a great song and it really showcases Kravitz talent, talent I wasn't privy to until this song. Savage Garden was big with a lot of my girlfriends at the time (both platonic and romantic) and 'I Knew I Loved You' was truly one of the best...plus I have a special place in my heart for that track (some naughty things happened while that track was pumpin').

Some strong tracks by the late Aaliyah (RIP) and a killer track by Montel (love this guy) help round out this album, making it more about the music than any particular genre. And yes J. Lo delivers with 'Waiting for Tonight' which is one of the best dance songs out there, and while some hated it I absolutly loved Trains 'Meet Virginia' for it was our first chance to meet Trian and they are truly one great band. Even Macy is forgivable here for she adds something to this album that no other artist could have...and that's an air of toleration. Notice I didn't list her with the 'sucky' songs for even though I'm not a huge fan of her or 'I Try' I've always respected her talent for what it was even if I just didn't quite get it.

Blink closes us out with yet another great song, though a bit overplayed...but it's Blink and you have to love them. Great collection of the best the year had to offer. Yes some were missed, some great and some not so, but what was shared was still memerable and well worth the storage space.

"NOW 4"; Not 4 Everyone.......2005-04-08

I feel that the "Now That's What I Call Music!" series is one of the best things to happen to the music industry in quite some time. Especially in our age of illegal downloading; it provides a legal method to obtain great single without bankrupting your wallet. Ussually, the albums are well worth the purchase because they are solid collections of quality singles. That is not the case with "NOW 4"; one that is too much of a mixed bag. For every really good song, there is one that ranges from bad to average. Unfortunetly, the two types are scattered throughout (so we can't skip an entire section). The mixed bag of tracks:
(1) Backstreet Boys "Larger Than Life" A+. Commonly known for their ballads, the boys deliver a perfect dance number here. Everything is pumped up to create an energized, stormin' pop/rock track flowing with solid beats. You can't help getting caught up in the energy and excitment this gererates. One of 1999's best singles.
(2) Britney Spears "(You Drive Me) Crazy" C+. Fun beat and production, yet very shallow in the end. Sticks to memory afterwards, but after examination we realizie that the song is about nothing. Though it isn't terrible; there are many more songs out there which are more worthy of our time.
(3) Marc Anthony "I Need To Know" A. Simple content that is filled with so much energy, zest and excitment to make it work on all levels. Anthony shows himself to be a very versatile vocalist, and a person who can flow perfectly with his beats. The song is wisely on the short side, any longer could have ruined it. This is a true treasure of 1999.
(4) Mandy Moore "Candy" B+. The material doesn't have much in terms of depth, but Mandy brings enough flair and style to make it work. Her voice is effective as it gives a certain conviction and urgency to the lyrics. Not a brilliant "teen pop" song; just a very entertaining one.
(5) Eiffel 65 "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" B-. This song is very dificult to review. As intriuging as I find the lyrics and get mesmerized by the beat; I still wish the song would pull together and complete what it ventures into. Although it isn't a complete success; it is never boring.
(6) Sonique "It Feels So Good" D+. She sounds extremley high pitched, and the voice is so odd and strange, that the song is irreversably crippled by it. If there is any substance to the song; it becomes lost a muddled through out. This is an example of a dance song failing.
(7) Lenny Kravitz "I Belong To You" B+. It is rather refreshing to hear Lenny shed the massive beats, because that gives him the opprotunity to showcase his vocals. He sings this track with utter conviction and heart throughout. That gives the song a certain depth and emotion.
(8) Savage Garden "I Knew I Loved You" C. A well made song that just plays it safe, and never does anything new or exciting. The vocals are decent (beats are almost none-existent), but there is no real depth in them. In the end, the song lacks the impact that could have had from a better group (i.e. 98 Degrees, Backstreet Boys)
(9) Joe "I Wanna Know" B+. In contrast to many songs; this is a retro R&B track which works. The material is as old as time, yet Joe's classy, polished voice make it sound convincing and touching at all times. As they say: a very good singer can make an old song sound new; and that's what he does here.
(10) Aaliyah "Try Again" A-. There's a really nice undercut of hip-hop here, which gives the song alot of it's edge. Aaliyah's voice adds conviction to make the lyrics sound passionate, and add some depth to them. Proof that not all R&B has to be sad; you get completely wrapped up in Timbaland's production.
(11) Jennifer Lopez "Waiting For Tonight" B. Well made, but it doesn't fully display J. Lo's talents. It's catchy, fun and light, yet we know that the song could have been more than that. "On The 6" was her debut LP, and it seems average compared to her later albums, particularly "J. Lo".
(12) Montell Jordan "Get It On Tonite" C. His 1995 single, "This Is How We Do It" is a memorable R&B classic. Shame that the qualities that made that work (the slick vocals and beat) are all-together lacking here. What's left is a standard R&B tune with no life to it. A real step back for Montell Jordan.
(13) Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals "Steal My Kisses" D. Their ungainly mix of R&B, funk and folk is a total failure. The beat has no impact, the lyrics have no substance and there is no impact or meaning at all. Strange that "NOW" would use such an odd mess.
(14) Smash Mouth "Then The Morning Comes" B-. The begining is so brilliant, original and different; I wish the song kept up that pace. It's not in the same league as "All Star", but still remains a solid pop/rock single. You can't help listening to the opening over and over.
(15) Train "Meet Virginia" C-. I really liked "Drops Of Jupiter" and "Calling All Angels"; those were rock tracks filled with emotion and power. I don't see any purpose to this song; the emotion isn't there and it's very uninvolving. I guess Train just had to find their skills.
(16) Macy Gray "I Try" B-. This is a beautifully written song with heartfelt lyrics, made unsuccessful by one factor: Macy's voice. Her voice is very weak and not very appealing, thus she detracts from the impact of her work. This song would be much better if someone else sung it.
(17) Hanson "This Time Around" D. It's not as irrating as "MMMBop" (few songs are), but there is nothing good about it either. All that the song does is cement the fact that Hanson was a talentless group. A very disposable song.
(18) blink-182 "All The Small Things" A-. A very good song that delivers everything we expect from blink-182. In fact, it even has more dimension and relevance than most of their music. It's short, but that helps create a nice, little breeze of a rock single. A good ending to a so-so album.
Bottom Line: **1/2. A real step backwards after the great heights that "NOW 3" was able to reach. I liked some of the songs, but I really could have done without a handful of them. Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff", 98 Degrees' "I Do (Cherish You)", Q-Tip's "Vivrant Thing", Brian McKnight's "Stay Or Let It Go", Destiny's Child's "Say My Name" and Big Pun's "It's So Hard" all would have been better selection. I can not tell you to rush out and buy this, but put it on your wish list or hope for it as a gift.
