5 out of 5 stars Hottest Music from '60s Latin Super Group.......2006-12-28

This one CD contains some of the most popular, chart-popping, and memorable rock/ballad music associated with the South American youth scene in the mid-to-late 1960s. For those of us who spent our adolescence in South America then, this disc is absolutely suffused with memories. The music itself is a fascinating blend of rock, jazz, and the occasional schmalzy small orchestra, bringing together a sound clearly Urugayan/Argentinian in origin, but of universal appeal to teens and to some degree young adult audiences. Like the more popular English rock groups such as the Dave Clark Five or Herman's Hermits, this group was able to incorporate a fairly broad spectrum of tunes and styles--enough to keep them on the charts with something sufficiently groundbreaking and unusual to keep their fans happy, year after year. But this group never attempted to break ground as a "rock group," and to my knowledge never attempted to compete in the heavy metal or acid rock sphere. Many of the songs favor a minor key and allude to love lost--messages all too familiar to teens of all times. All singing is done in either Spanish or Portuguese, in the vernacular inflections of the heavily Italianized style of speech typical of everyday Uruguay/Argentina. The group represents itself as street poets, and its melodic but sometimes-raspy renditions add a bit of a John Lennon touch. These are intelligent, slick balladeers, some of whose members continue to appear professionally primarily in the Americas. Sound quality varies, but is excellent for its day. These men clearly enjoyed working together in the studio; their public performances often seemed strained and fraught with stage-angst.
