Good start, if you don't know the band.......2006-02-17

It has to be said: Tipica 73 was one of the best bands to come out of NY in the 1970's. They represented (and still represent) the bridge between traditional Cuban sounds and progressive musical tendencies from NY. Just a couple of names will give you an idea of what kind of "mazacote" we are talking about here: Adalberto Santiago, Tito Allen, Camilo Azuquita, Jose Alberto "El Canario", Orestes Vilato, Nicky Marrero, Johnny Rodriguez, Sonny Bravo, René Lopez, Cachete Maldonado... and the list goes on.

This compilation should serve as nothing but an introduction to what the Tipica was all about. Still, this is one of those bands that produced so many great music, that it is imperative to buy most of their albums, if not all of them. Also, keep in mind that, for some reason, FANIA compilations usually have a lesser quality sound than original recordings.

Tipica 73's best on one CD!!!.......2005-06-23

Virtually all of this legendary band's 1973-80 albums should be in your collection if you are a serious salsero. Tipica 73 made some wonderful recordings during this time period and the band's musicians' artistry and playing remain unmatched to this day. While this fine anthology brings most of their big hits onto one CD for the first time, you should also buy all their studio albums.

Tipica with the Masters of Son.......2005-01-17

This is one of my prized possessions. This is the group that made me truly love so-called "salsa". These guys had a musical chemistry that was beyond many. Then, they had to go and record with the Masters! TATA, Barreto, Egues, El Nino! Oh my God!

Their best but the one that brought their downfall also........2003-07-01

This was Tipica 73's best album ever but it also became their downfall. This one was recorded in Cuba and after they returned to the USA most nightclubs refused to book them (fearing boycotts and reprisals from Cuban exiles). This CD,however, remains a "captured live" portrait of one of 1970s salsa's best bands.

More great 1970s salsa from one of the genre's best........2003-07-03

Virtually everything Tipica 73 recorded during its 1973-79 heyday was superb. On this album, the best seemed to have reached a new level of perfection as evidenced by the timeless title track ,"Los Santeros" and "El Jamaiquino". This is yet another album that clearly demonstrates what the classic 1970s salsa was all about.

Señores: estamos ante una de las agrupaciones más importantes e influyentes en la historia de la salsa. Un grupo compuesto por musicos excepcionales como Sonny Bravo (hoy en Soneros del Barrio), Jhonny Rodriguez, Nelson Gonzales, Alfredo de la Fe, Nicky Marredo, Oreste Vilato, etc, etc, Y ni hablar de sus cantantes que estan entre lo mas selecto y grandioso de la salsa. Los señores Adalberto Santiago (incomparable), Tito Allen, Jose Alberto el canario y Camilo Azuquita (genial). Este disco es una reunion sobre los 25 años del grupo y de ahi se disolvieron para siempre. Solo quiero decir que este disco nos demuestra como es la salsa dura, la que nunca pasara de moda. Solo para conocedores, no apto para oidos acostumbrados a la salsa sensual o de sonido Miami.

Tipica 73 was undeniably and unquestionably one of the very best salsa bands of its time. This reunion was a more-than-welcome treat with many original members being present. I personally don't find it as superb or as mind-blowing as most of their 1970s releases but this CD is still wonderful.

Their searing-hot and experimental fifth album........2007-01-18

This masterpiece was Tipica 73's fifth album and it features the great Panamanian sonero Camilo Azuquita on lead vocals. "Xiomara" has to be an all-time great descarga on which Azuquita's fiery but soulful improvisations match the musicians' no-holds-barred playing perfectly. Said song alone is more than worth the price of admission but don't forget the experimental and jazzy descargas "Bongo Fiesta" and "Salsa Suite" either. Produced by the late great Louie Ramirez.

A 1970s "Salsa Dura" masterpice for all times........2005-03-12

This legendary band seemed to get better with every new release. This 1978 release features Camilo Azuquita and a then-unknown Jose Alberto on lead vocals with "Que Manera De Sentirme Bien", "Tina Tinoso", "Baila Que Baila" and "Los Campeones De La Salsa" proving why this album was titled "Salsa Encendida". Red-hot and fiery 1970s Salsa at its glorious best !!!

A classic tribute to the charanga sound from Tipica 73........2005-04-14

As I've said previously, Tipica 73 seemed to get better with each new release and this one was no exception. This is a glorious and majestic tribute to the classic Cuban charanga sounds of the 1950s and early 1960s which remains timeless. Despite their having been disbanded by 1983 Tipica 73's music shall FOREVER remain among the very best Salsa ever recorded. Any fan or student of this music owes it to him/herself to buy and enjoy ALL of Tipica 73's 1973-81 albums (all are now on CD).
