Latin-American maestros at their very best.......1999-09-09

This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil,and Argentina.The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming.The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section.The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here.Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz

Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03

Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.

My Parents Favorite Songs all in one.......2006-12-19

So far, this has been my parents favorite CD. They have been listening to this CD for over a month and keep talking about their childhood years while listening. I also enjoy listening to those songs with my parents who discribe in detail their childhood and young adult years in Mexico.

A musical treasure.......2003-03-13

An amazing collection of great songs by fantasic artists usually means that you have heard them all before. More than likely this will not be the case with this excellent two CD disc. Featuring 50 songs, the other 50 are on the equally fantasic Vol.1, there is enough music here to listen to during your festive moments or get together pachangas with your family. These songs are of the ranchera type from Mexico and span decades. There is music from the Golden Era of Mexican films and old time radio for your listening pleasure. Take a look at the featured artists. Literally a who's who of this Mexican genre, you'll find some of the greatest stars like the unforgetable Jose Alfredo Jimenez, matinee idols Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete, the man with the white streak of hair and incredible voice, Miguel Aceves Mejia, super female vocalists like Lola Beltran, Lucha Villa, Amalia Mendoza and curious additions like Gloria Trevi, neglected and not as recognized talents like Alicia Juarez are all here among lesser known but very talented musicians. Growing up in the United States with roots in Mexcio I missed many of these songs, besides I can actually say I was too young! This disc fills the cultural gaps, a bit of modern nostalgia permeates from this disc like a charro riding off into the distance and returning in a truck. Listening to this disc is a bit like taking a ride through a time zone and learnig some history in the process. You will like this disc for the sheer diversity of artistry. There is a rich tradition preserved here for future generations that should not be missed. Take a look at the songs and artists again, it is worth buying, vale la pena. Unlike other compilations the included booklet gives valuable information like when it was recorded, the accompanying musicians(often El Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan) and the song authors. While you are at it order Vol. 1. A super package and at a bargain price because historical musical integrety is priceless. La musica es cultura, the music is culture, que viva la musica y la cultura, long live the music and the culture!

Sparx.......2003-10-13

The CD is wonderful, the voices are so clear and beautiful with the marachi. I listen to tex mex but I love this CD

Almost as good as the real thing........2003-06-27

Sparx is an exceptionally talented group. The harmonies sung by these ladies are beautiful, and the music on this CD is a real pleasure to listen to. There are no bad tracks on this CD at all, and that is a rarity. I lost all the CDs I keep in the car last December, and this was one of the few CDs I bought again to replace the ones I lost, if that tells you anything.

The only thing that detracts at all from Sparx and this CD is that it seems a little overproduced. It is as if someone found a talented group and tried to make them into their own idea of what they wanted instead of the group having a core of absolute musical vision of their own. That unique vision is what drives most successful performers in Latin music, whereas Sparx seems to be under the influence of the typical American production values of the last twenty years - make it good enough to be a commercial success, but don't concentrate on bringing out the true talent of the performers. Sparx has that true talent, but it isn't quite brought out on this CD. Nevertheless, I still enthusiastically recommend this CD for its energy and spirit. The sound these ladies have is quite unique, and gives a new fresh interpretation to some of the already great music on this CD.

Mariachi Roots Music.......2000-06-12

My brother gave this to me knowing I am a lover of Mariachi music. I have a pretty extensive collection but this is very unique because these guys are originals. These guys were very popular in the 30's and 40's and were considered the premier group of it's era.These are rare recordings that document the evolution of the Mariachi. This group was responsible for popularizing the trumpet (Jesus Salazar) and the first to become popular in cinema and radio. Of course now the trumpet is an acceptable part of the Mariachi but then it was considered going against tradition. Here you'll find huapangoes, son abajeno, pasodobles and canciones and corridos that are timeless wonders. Some of the more popular songs are here like "Guadalajara" and "El Pasajero" but there are some esoteric gems that you may never have heard. The accompanying booklet is informative as well. The 24 tracks here are not to be missed by any Mariachi afficionado, no studio wizardry here just plain Mariachi roots music.

People say Vicente is " El # 1". I think is Antonio Aguilar. He has a talent for interpreting songs. He is NOTHING like his son Pepe. No pop rancheras for radio friendly that are not even rancheras but ballads with mariachi. Antonio Aguilar is a must have.
