Charming and Versatile.......2000-06-11

Those of us familiar with George Shearing's work for Capitol from the 50s and 60s and who have been searching for those albums on CD have cause to rejoice with the release of this two-album CD.

Shearing was not a virtuoso of the Art Tatum class, but his music is elegant, sophisticated and instantly recognizable. I doubt if many listeners nowadays would dance to the tunes found on LATIN LACE or LATIN AFFAIR, but one could easily do so since percussion and rhythm figure so prominently. The arrangements are clever, the tempi varied, and the performances virtually flawless, so the music can be listened to for itself. On the other hand, it can also serve as great background music for cocktail parties and/or dinners.

LATIN LACE is composed mostly of what I take to be authentic Spanish/Latin American tunes. LATIN AFFAIR, however, casts Norteamericano standards in a Latin mold. If you're looking for something a little more relaxed, I recommend the BLACK SATIN/WHITE SATIN CD, another Shearing twofer.

Quality Cuts on a Quality Label.......2004-12-03

Far Out Records has grown into quote a fantastic label. This year marked it's 10th anniversary and they had a couple of nice tributes to the artists and musicians that have helped make "Far Out" records synonomous with "quality releases". This is off of their "Brazilian Love Affair" franchise, a compilation series which usually serves as a real sampler for most of their artists. It's similar to the way Ziribuiboom/Crammed did their samplers (Brasil 2Mil, etc.) or even Schema with their Break&Bossa's.

This one, the fourth, was pretty strong and had some real quality cuts on it. It starts out with Patricia Marx slow jam which features Joao Parahyba (think Suba/Trio Mocoto) that was popular in summer of 2002 then follows up with a sort of jazzy track by Azymuth with Sabrina Melheiros (is it her husband that's with Mamond?)... although admittedly that wasn't a song that really got me. The remix to "Na Batida do Agogo" followed and it is a pretty cool cut (Grupo Batuque), you can hear it on Brazilution 5. Other cool cuts on this one were Joyce's harmonic "Todos Os Santos", Democustico's sitar laden xinga filled "A Sereia", a soulful percussion heavy track by Nature's Plan, and the cd winds down with a vintage take of Vera Cruz by Vox Populi. Also - Mamond's "Preguiciman" is included - that's a cut another great track with guitar solos and a nice little bossa beat.

All in all, I definitely recommend this release - much like I recommend all 5 of the Brazilian Love Affair CD's. This label that features such great artists from the old school and new school, like Troubleman, Joyce, Os Ipanemas, Azymuth, Marcos Valle and several others, knows how to put out some great music! The quality of the cuts makes up for it being just one disc - a few other series, like Brazilectro, Nova Latino, etc. are all double disc sets. If you dig this, be sure to check Kenny Dope's "Brazilika", a tribute to Far Out recordings, and Brazilution 5.2. Also, you might want to check out some of the label's individual artist's.

Good Sequel to this Underrated Series.......2006-02-04

Somewhere down the line, the Brazilian Love Affair series was lost in the shuffle. It's been around since 1998 or 1999, and has five real volumes - 6 if you include the "Brazilika" tribute done by Kenny Dope of MAW in 2004. At any rate this is the second edition in this outstanding series which brings to you artists that are right out of the Far Out label's catalogue of musicians along with some extremely rare cuts. What stands out in this series is the sheer quality of the recordings and talent of the Musicians.

Volume two starts out with an intro to Escravos Do Jo (Joe's Slaves) before the actual song comes on. It's a pretty powerful song... and a bit depressing when you think about it. that song was given a great remix by Da Lata later, but on this album, Da Lata contributed a rendition of "Ponteio". This song saw a bit of over-exposure over the past few years but when it came out back in 2000 (it's not on their feature album "Songs From the Tin" but is on their remix album) it was/still is a magnificent recording. Fusion masters Azymuth team with Marcos Valle team up for "Quem Com Quem", a song with delightful keys and Marco's voice. Celia Vaz & Ape release a trippy "Nas Agua Do Rio". Other tracks that stood out on this were Joyce's "Quarup", Tutti Moreno & Friend's with "Constelacao" and the other Azymuth cuts. Oh, but I think my favorite album on this is the incredible take on "Dindi" by Victor Assis Brasil. It's FAR different than what you would expect from the way Astrud sang the song many years ago. But it really is an amazing version because it's such a different perspective of the song.

Much like the others in the series, this comes highly recommended. It's really nothing like the other electric/european compilations on the market like Brazilectro, Nova Latino, Rio Lounge, etc. This one is a bit more geared towards some of the great artists from Brasil through the years with some exceptional young talent mixed in. Another difference is that this is one disc of tunes, not a double disc set. But as with pretty much all of the Far Out releases,it's more about the quality of the artists and tracks, not the quantity.

I don't have the CD - I have the old LP and cannot transfer it to CD or cassette. Will SOMEONE please get in touch with me if they are willing to do this for me!
