To say that the Kronos Quartet's Nuevo is their most adventurous outing to date is hardly an understatement. This diverse collection of Mexican compositions and traditional tunes brims with an unpredictable energy and a dazzling array of Latin American guest performers, and, yes, Kronos keeps up throughout. A cocktail pop tune from Esquivel gets covered, there's a chamber arrangement of Revueltas's sprawling orchestral work Sensemaya, and Nortec Collective member Plankton Man remixes Kronos's interpretation of "El Sinaloense" into a sizzling dance music track, which closes the disc. The playing is spirited, to say the least (just check out "El Llorar," with guest vocalists Alejandro Flores and Efren Vargas). But this is foremost a party record. A bevy of reverb effects and instrumentation (including a squeaky musical leaf solo on "Perfidia") ensures that things stay unpredictable. Production work by Rock en Espanol producer Gustavo Santaolalla infuses this disc with an edgy modernism. The bulk of these compositions have been arranged by composer Osvaldo Golijov, who seemingly brings a manic energy and a playfulness to everything he touches. Chamber music purists may scoff, but the rest of us will be busy dancing and thrilling to this exciting, genre-blurring Kronos project. --Jason VerlindeAlbum Description
With 'Nuevo' - a project based entirely around Mexican composers, musical traditions and influences - the Kronos Quartet have delivered one of the most striking group odysseys to date. Produced by Gustavo Santaolalla, both an authority on Latin American art music as well as the most in-demand producers of rock en espanol, the album also features a host of guest artists from both the concert hall as well as the streets of Mexico. Housed in a slipcase. 2002.Customer Reviews:
screeching mariachi's.......2007-01-09
Good music, disappointing liner notes.......2005-12-07
Very, very poor production decisions.
Amazing!!!!!!.......2005-11-05
So what is "Nuevo"? A diverse, impressive, multilayered (that is, there are several strata, several kind od compositions) portrait of Mexican music. A comprehensive landscape of Mexican music. But ... not exactly mexican music is what you hear in most of the tracks, but the Kronos' POINT OF VIEW, that is, Mexico through Kronos' glasses. For I don`t find a truly traditional Mexican track (perhaps only "Son Huasteca" and that before 12/12 are those which most resemble to a truly traditional "Mexican" sound). Almost everything in this rich album is a new way of listening to mexican music.
Why? Arrangements are varied and colourfull. Every track shows novelty and spontaneity, even in well known pieces like "Perfidia" or "Sensemaya". All in this CD is "Nuevo (New)": music that you have not listened before, no matter your knowledge on Mexican music!!
The type of music is quite diverse: classical (Sensemaya), TV music (Chavosuite), bolero (Perfidia), local music (Sinaloense), processional music (12/12), even dance music!!
The sound is also quite strange sometimes: the editor distorts some tracks in order to show the quartet as if they were listened through an old radio player. This is quite amazing!!! or listen to 12/12: quartet strings combined with recording of a traditional "ritual" music and fireworks. Also there are includede street noises between the tracks, thus creating a kind of "leitmotive", like a "Concept Album".
Let me say this: I don't care of mexican music. I don't know too much of it. Nor it is something I love. What I like of this CD is not Mexican music legacy but WHAT KRONOS DOES WITH IT. I think they could do the same with every (rich) music culture in the world. The reason why Mexico is chosen perhaps is a personal experience of Kronos' members (as I have red in an interview).
Booklet contains track details, a lot of credits but not a single word of commentary about the music (a pity).
More than great Mexican music, this is a great Kronos show. If you like Kronos or want to investigate what Kronos truly is and /or If you like mexican music, buy it!
If you don't like mexican music, buy it too!! You will think, as I do, that this Kronos release is essential.

Mexican music performed by Kronos Quartet ??.......2003-07-26
Well, first I must say that it is very rewarding to find such a talented international ensemble to interpret our music. Some of the tracks are really outstanding. Particularly 12/12 and the Chavosuite.
But, in the other hand, the purposely out of tune interpretation of El Sinaloense is deceiving (do our Mariachis sound so terrible ?) and the solo wistle in "Perfida" really destroyed the sesibility and charm of this melody. I mean, why on earth did't they play it with a violin instead ?
For the rest, it is a very original album, and it shurely reflects the impression that causes our culture. The inclusion of live sounds in a marketplace and of the "carretonero" buying old shoes and clothes, makes a specially beautiful ambiance.
It is also an album with a very humorous approach. (Some of the tracks sound like if they had been arranged by P.D.Q. Bach !) Get it if you are looking for something original and different, but please buy something else if you really want to know what mexican music is.

Callas Aida, Mex. City, 1951.......2006-07-21
Callas's most famous Aida -- all I can say is wow.......2006-02-17
But in this 1951 Mexico City performance, Callas was on fire. Her voice of course never had the glowing beauty of a Tebaldi or Price, but Callas makes her Aida a firy princess. Her "Ritorna vincitor" might be the best sung version I've ever heard. Rosa Ponselle and Giannina Arangi-Lombardi and Renata Tebaldi may sound more beauty but Callas inflects the text to great emotional effect. Her "O patria mia" is a rough moment -- high C was always a rough note for Callas, and she can't sing it "dolce" as marked in the score. But her Act 3 duets with del Monaco and Taddei are remarkable, as is her "O terra addio." And of course, she caps off the Triumphal Scene with the famous E-flat that lasts 7 seconds (yes I've counted). Legend has it that in 1950, when she sang Aida at Mex City with Kurt Baum, she was so annoyed with the tenor that she did the E-flat at the Triumphal Scene. It worked so well that the next year she tried the same stunt.
The rest of the cast is strong. I prefer a Radames who is better able to control dynamics like Franco Corelli or Carlo Bergonzi. Mario del Monaco seems to sing in two ways -- loud and louder. But del Monaco is certainly stentorian and heroic and there just aren't voices like him anymore. Giuseppe Taddei is a wonderfully nasty Amonasoro. His voice practically drips hatred and bitterness. And Oralia Dominguez is not as well-known as the rest of the cast but she's terrific nonetheless, with a beautiful, powerful mezzo voice.
The sound is admittedly bad, but the performance more than makes up for it.
All hail to the E Flat Goddess.......2005-08-23

Impeccable!.......2004-03-17
Dear reader, trust me on this - you must have it!
Thrilling and luxurious masterpiece.......2000-09-26
Despite the title of this piece, this is not 'churchy' music. It has everything that good drama has, and if it were a book it would be unputdownable. Caldara gives us action, showing himself to be every bit as much dramatist as composer. The story and the pace never flag for a minute. René Jacobs moves it along at a cracking pace and makes it a memorable event. It must have been wonderful to take part.
Amor Celeste and Amor Terreno are battling for the heart and soul of Maddalena. It opens with Fink's stunning Amor Terreno, seductive enough to capture the heart of a stone. In trying to win Maddalena, her ornamentations paint vivid pictures of "drunk with pleasure". Then, in charges Scholl's Amor Celeste, powerful and confident of winning the battle hands down - but then so is Fink's Amor Terreno, full of strength and depth. You can't take sides at their declaration of war, the duet Alle vittorie, because both are convincing - and their voices blend perfectly. The sheer strength of Scholl's voice in this piece brushes aside the familiar accusations of "too ethereal".
Their awesome battle duets punctuate the unfolding drama as Maddalena agonises - in dialogue with her sister - over her choices, and the orchestra supports them with real fire. The chest-thumping opening provided by Chiara Banchini's string band in the duet La mia virtude/Il senso è un nemico makes an impact that would lift you off your seat in a concert hall (if only). When Amor Terreno is finally defeated, the colours of her fury are so vivid you can taste it, and it's clear that the only destiny for such rage is Hell. Amor Celeste's victory-celebration Su, lieti festeggiate has the earthy gusto of mens' peasant dances. A rather earthy sound for Amor Celeste at this point... even the metaphysical Mr Scholl sounds as though he could stomp his feet.
This recording made Maria Cristina Kiehr a star, and she has never sounded better than as Maddalena. Her clear voice expresses longing, indecision, passion and tranquillity with equal facility, and is never less than completely beautiful. Her expressions, as Maddalena changes course, develop brilliantly. Her cry of "Signor, pietate!" is the pivot of the whole thing - high drama indeed.
All the singers are now stars, and every performance is stunning. Un-improvable.
So many of the tunes are completely original and whistle-able, even dance-able, that I am surprised they are not better known. They certainly stick in the memory, if only because the repeat button on the CD player gets a lot of use. This composition is a masterpiece and the 2-CD set a great Baroque luxury.
The very last note is a complete surprise -- pure genius from Caldara.
What a discovery!.......1999-12-09

A classic with the VAI Forza with Milanov, Warren and del monaco .......2006-03-29
A legendary performance.......2003-01-30
When Herbert von Karajan first conducted Renata Tebaldi at La Scala in 1946, he exclaimed on hearing her sing "Ah! La voce d'angelo!" (Ah! The voice of an angel!) - possibly a comment on her location (she was singing in the organ loft) - but his description also fits her voice.
In this recording of 'Forza,' Tebaldi spins out phrases of sheer tonal velvet, especially in Leonora's aria, 'Madre, pietosa Vergine' outside the monastery, and later when her voice floats out over the voices of the monks in the prayer 'La Vergine degli angeli.' Then you will have to wait until opera's end for 'Pace, pace, mio Dio.' Thank God Bach was Protestant, or we would have nothing to counter the gorgeous, compelling religiosity of this Verdi, as sung by Tebaldi.
Listen to Franco Corelli sing 'La vita e inferno all'infelice,' one of the most difficult and beautiful tenor arias that Verdi ever wrote, or to his duet with Bastianini, 'Solemne in quest'ora,'and you may agree with those of us who believe he was the twentieth century's greatest tenor.
The grim determination of Ettore Bastianini's Don Carlo di Vargas makes him a perfect foil to Correli in the Act IV duet "Invano, Alvaro, ti celasti al mondo." Corelli will break your heart, even though he is a somber rather than piteous Padre Raffaello. There is none of the Gigli sobbing in his music.
Boris Christoff is a majestically sung Padre Guardiano. Just imagine Boris Godunov as a rather terrifying Italian monk.
The two minor but important roles of Fra Melitone and the gypsy, Preziosilla are perfectly rendered by Renato Capecchi and Oralia Dominguez. If this 'Forza' hadn't had such strong principals, these two characters might have stolen the opera. I usually consider the fortune-telling, war-mongering gypsy and the short-tempered Franciscan monk annoyances to be gotten past so that I can hear the principals sing, but Capecchi and Dominguez demand a careful listening for these roles.
This performance is conducted by Francesco Molinari Predelli.

Even their harshest critics can't accuse Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops of not trying to have fun. On The Latin Album, they tackle a repertoire that includes big-band favorites and compositions from Piazzolla, Perez Prado, and Aaron Copland (in the form of El Salon México). These are mostly dance tunes, filled with crashing percussion, Latin rhythms, and familiar melodies. To their credit, the Boston Pops get this fiesta right about half the time--opening with Alberto Ginastera's "Malambo," they set a furious, rollicking mood that's heavy on the percussion. They shine on Jacob Gade's "Jalousie" (an early hit for Lockhart predecessor Arthur Fiedler) and on the more atmospheric "Mi Cambio" by César Villalobos. Unfortunately, their arrangement of Piazzolla's "Oblivion" is about as subtle as the music found in soap operas (and about as exciting) and "Perfidia" is a disappointment, "smooth" but hardly sultry. Still, the Pops know how to play their brassy, rhythmic showpieces, and the recorded sound here is excellent. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
