they're at it again!.......2001-08-07

The players here (also known as Unicorn and Oni Wytars) are among the very few truly brilliant early music performers. Not for them the dry, desiccated path of passionless scholarship! Unlike almost every other instrumental early music ensemble (and I've surveyed a LOT), they display fully engaged, scintillating musicianship at every turn. Their unconventional performance decisions tend to cut them out of critics' golden lists -- most of this music shouldn't really be considered authentically presented -- but such objections go lame and impotent before the vivacity and improvisational panache saturating this CD...along with their MANY others!

One of my favorite cancioneros ,and one that I recommend to all.It is performed on period instruments,and it contains romances,songs from about the times of the "reconquista",instrumental pieces, pieces for viols, and solos for vihuela. One of my favorite pieces of this is track 14 Danza Alta by Francisco de la Torre,it's an intrumental piece for viols and recorder.This music that was performed at the court of King Don Fernando de Aragon.It is hard of finding recordings of Cancioneros at budget price so take advantage of this one...It's really good

Another 4 stars, though I don't share the reviewer from Australia's reservations about the lack of rasp in the singing. Who really knows how these notes were sung? It's a matter of personal preference. Alround a very good recording but not "the definitive" version of these songs (we may never have that). There is a companion disc by Wimmer : Early Music - Sephardic Romances which, like this one, has Spanish texts and English translations. (Naxos) 553617.

There is also another recording of similar material on Naxos : Royal Songbook, by Thorby and Musica Antiqua London - but that is marred by lack of texts or translations. (Naxos 553325)

Some very lively and lovely music.......1999-02-28

After centuries of Arabic and Jewish influence, the new music of Spain born at the court of Ferdinand and Isabella had all the strength of European melody with all the richness of rhythm and chromatic freedom of Northern Africa and the East. The performances by Ensemble Accentus do full justice to this music - largely because it and its director, Thomas Wimmer, have delved into and brilliantly performed the Jewish Sephardic music of old Spain. My only complaints are that there is not enough music here by Juan del Encina; and the singers do not understand the texture of old music. Most singers strive for purity and smoothness of voice and register, but the Renaissance loved loud, deep, rich, overtoned and raspy voices: voices with the sting of crumhorns and hurdy-gurdies. Here we hear some of the instruments played well, but not the larynxes which should accompany them. Nonetheless, a valuable and enjoyable CD for any fan of this era. [SW]

Mariachi Cobre may force you to rethink your idea of mariachi music. Forget the strolling guitar bands in Mexican restaurants—Este Es Mi Mariachi Cobre will introduce you to one of the most highly developed folk traditions in the Western Hemisphere. Like the legendary dance bands of Cuba, Mexico's mariachi tradition has roots in the chamber orchestras of Baroque Europe, the indigenous music of the Native Americans, the rhythmic drive of West African music, and the passion of Spanish folk and flamenco music. On this second release by Mariachi Cobre, the group is joined by Linda Ronstadt, who celebrates her own Hispanic heritage in a pair of duets with bandleader, Steve Carrillo, and by producer/arranger Brian Keane, the noted composer and multi-instrumentalist. Much of the album is devoted to traditional mariachi music, but both Carrillo and Keane contribute several deft and contemporary arrangements of older songs; and a well-known piece from the classical guitar tradition, Manuel Ponce's Estrellita, gets a traditional mariachi treatment. The sound of Mariachi Cobre is as tightly-knit as the finest orchestras. With a complement of six to eight violins, two trumpets, and three different members of the guitar family, Mariachi Cobre is close to orchestral size itself! But as strong as the group is instrumentally, it is the voices that take center stage. Those voices sing with fire and tenderness, and even listeners who do not understand a word of Spanish will have little trouble grasping the message of mariachi songs; joyous songs about being in love, tender lullabies to a loved one, remorse at having lost love. And the group varies the textures within each song: solos, duos, and trios will appear. Este Es Mi Mariachi Cobre is a lively, accessible introduction to a type of music that Americans—to their surprise—do not really know. Mariachi Cobre explodes the stereotypes of this music; after all, as the group's album title says, "this is my mariachi."

As the son of a professional musician, I have acquired a reasonable taste and appreciation for all kinds of music. When I recently saw Mariachi Cobre on TV I was astounded by the excellence of this group. They combine the very best of instrumentalists, vocalists, and arrangements to produce a sound that is the best of the best in the world of Mariachi Music today. Steve Carillo's classical training and voice quality make him a lead mariachi without peer...I am truly astounded by him and the Cobre's many gifted members. If you haven't heard Mariachi Cobre before, Este Es Mi Mariachi presents them at their finest. And when you listen to Steve sing "Estrellita"...well, just remember, I told he was superb.

I remmember hearing my first mariachi album about five years ago. It was Cobres self entitled Cd. Sinced then, I have began playing mariachi, and hope to be as good as they are some day. Their musicianship is amazing and their voices pure gold. This Cd is just one example of their amazing talents. Thanks guys and, QUE SIGE LA TRADICION!!!!!!!!!!!!

After listening to this CD, I love mariachi music. I don't understand the language, but the music touchs my heart and spirit. I also thoroughly enjoyed listening to the songs Linda Ronstadt sang with them.

Mariachi Cobre has been my favorite group of musicians from the time I first heard them on a recording. They bring to the listener the genuine sound of MARIACHI. When you listen to them perform you get this feeling that you are in Mexico. You also know for certain that they are having a great time as they perform; almost as though they are trying to make one another have even more fun than the next musician. I can get out of a slump in the middle of the day by playing any of their CD's. Sigan adelante muchachos! Keep moving forward ahead of us guys!

Variations & Value.......2005-12-02

This CD contains some wonderful variations of traditional Christmas carols. O Little Town of Bethlehem is hauntingly beautiful. The Holly and the Ivy is delightful. One of my favorite holiday songs, Personent Hodie, is particularly interesting and well done. And all of this at a true value price!

Tone down the organ and I'd love it!.......2003-12-23

Pitts's new tune for O Little Town of Bethlehem is very appealing, and the alternate tune for The Holly and the Ivy in some verses is beautiful. The arangements for O Come and Of the Father's Love Begotten are very striking.
The singers are good, whether as soloists or in chorus and their pronunciation is very clear. However, the organ is sometimes allowed to drown them out! And, at least for my taste, the organ ornamentation is very often far too discordant. Fortunately this does not happen in every song, and when it does occur, it is usually for one verse only.
Most of these arangements and settings I would love to hear again without the organ. Then I'd give it more stars!
