the way brouwer meant it to sound.......2003-11-03
Brouwer himself states that Papandreou preforms his works the way they're supposed to, and I totally aggree!
Papandreou has a great sonority, an unbelievably balanced and astonishing technique, and most of all a profound interpretation. Brouwer himself once stated in an interview that his music is really easy to interpret, if you just play what he mentions in his partitures. Of course this is a little bit to modest of the great composer, but he obviously wanted to make clear that he wants the preformer to play exactly what's in the score, and this is, contrary to a bunch of other guitarists, certainly what Papandreou does on this cd. You can hear every little musical instruction brouwer put into his scores, plus a profound understanding of all the secrets of the pure magic this music holds.
Add to this the low price of this record, and you get a 5*-buy.

Album Description
San Diego's instrumental post-rock quintet came together after playing in such seminal San Diego bands as The Locust, Crimson Curse, Swing Kids, and Gogogo Airheart among others. This is their third full-length since the release of their critically acclaimed debut "Spine & Sensory" in 2000. It has layers and textures akin to Boards Of Canada and Amon Tobin. Melodic and inventive, emotive and inspirational, the music sings so eloquently throughout, it is nothing less then revelatory. There's great hope and optimism present here; a sanguine feeling that permeates the whole album. A colorful journey beyond instrumental post-rock, delving into the darker realms of modern psychedelia.
Customer Reviews:
A fresh sound that is both tranquil and uplifting.......2006-03-10
Tristeza takes full advantage of the instrumental format to bring you songs such as Liquid Pyramid, which deliver a full sound that can pull the stress and angst right out of you. I am a graduate student that needs uninterrupted reading time, and my trusty mp3 player helps with that. The absence of vocals coupled with a smooth sound make this album ideal for this application. The other strong point of this album is that it is one that you could put in your player, hit play, and listen to it in its entirety.
Anything but melancholy.......2005-12-19
Although Tristeza translates to "melancholy" in english, I felt nothing but happiness and fortune being able to see them live at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood just a couple weeks ago, right after the release of "A Colores".
I'm a newbier fan, and Tristeza have instantly become favorites. I really can't describe how their music makes me feel, except just transported. That's how their melodies made me feel live at their show, and just driving or sitting or working and listening to them.
Flawless. Highly, highly recommended if you are more "old school" and like Pat Metheny or a little new school and like "Explosions in the Sky". To wrap this up, these songs sound like their CD looks: a musical work of art.
A Colores~A Treasure.......2005-12-02
Transfixing and ever-changing is this album's theme. Dark, meloncholly, psychadelic post rock with an amazing keyboard sound. (Gotta love that Rhodes). I saw these guys recently in Orlando and I have to say it's been a long time since I've gone to see a band that is so in tune and in sink with one another. These guys truly love what they do. The new stuff is full of changes, and more importantly, on point. The drummer has definately progressed over time and the music has become more enhanced with almost a dark jazz fusion feel to it. I was and still am impressed with what this band has brought forth. I have been a fan for some time now, but this album indeed shows just how much Tristeza has grown over time. If they ever come to your town, I highly recommend checking them out. It's definately an ear pleasing experience.
Easily one of the best instrumental albums of 2005.......2005-11-26
I had been waiting for this cd to come out ever since I heard two tracks that were put up weeks before the release date. I've been a fan of Tristeza for a while but it wasn't until I picked up this album that I appreciated them the way I do now. The release date of this cd was right around the same time they played in my home town. I watched their live show before getting the cd and most of the songs in the set were from the new album. I was captivated the whole time in a way I've never been at a show before. These new songs possess a certain energy and feeling Tristeza has never showed us before, whether this is due to the addition of two new members since their last release is hard to tell. They've kept the same drummer but his playing has never sounded so good, it seems as if everything he's recorded on this cd is perfect. The addition of a new keyboardist definitely contributed to the change in sound, and definitely for the better. Now their sound is darker than ever before, but it seems like this transition was necessary. Their older stuff was plagued with reviews of it being too repetitive or boring, as if it wasn't going anywhere. On A Colores, it's the opposite. The music is now so ambitious and full of mystery. It keeps a somewhat consistant feel but none of the songs sound the same. To put it simply, this album is a must have for anyone interested in good music.

Album Description
Known as much for their consistent touring as their prolific output, San Diego's instrumental post-rock quintet Tristeza formed in 1997. The members came together after playing in such seminal San Diego bands as The Locust, Crimson Curse, Swing Kids and Gogogo Airheart, among others. In promotion of their first single, Tristeza toured three times, making the 7" a best-seller and proving that the band could pull off their intricate instrumental sound onstage as well as in the studio.
Soon after, Tristeza recorded their first full-length, Spine and Sensory, to huge critical acclaim. This is a reissue of that long out-of-print disc. The album has been remastered at Digiprep Studios in Hollywood (who master most Rhino reissues) and expanded with three hard-to-find tracks. "Macrame" and "La Verdad" were featured on the very limited Tristeza Insound Tour CD, while "Pink Elephants" was featured on the out-of-print Rocket Racer 7".
Jimmy LaValle, featured on this release, is now playing full-time as The Album Leaf (Subpop) and Stephen Swesey plays with Los Angeles based Languis (Plug Research). Although they've been in seclusion for the past two years, Tristeza is currently reforming with original members Christopher Sprague, Luis Hermosillo and James Lehner. The Tristeza saga is set to continue

My my my..pink elephants CAN fly.......2005-11-03
from start to finish this cd had my attention...golden hill just pulls you in and that's how it all begins my friend...songs like "The Marrionette" and "Cinematography" inspire you and bring you up into the clouds, and "Pink Elephants" is a sentimental journey through euphoria...with melodious guitar stylings and slow yet grooving drum beats and bass lines...a perfect blend of piano and guitar...this was put together nicely..
Golden Hill.......2005-08-13
I first saw tristeza 7 years ago at an independant music festival in Wayne, Michigan.
The fest was centered around hardcore punk (with a generous handful of fugazi rip-offs) and it lasted three days long. At some point during day 2, a band dressed in all dark clothing took the stage and didn't even address the crowd as to the beginning of their set. This faux pas made me raise an eyebrow. They started playing this slow, yet driving music and i just stood there in front watching...waiting for the vocals to kick in. They never came.
At the time (being that all i was listening to was thrash), my predictable ADD reaction to this would've been to walk away and bum around the vinyl distros, but i didn't. I just stood there stumped with my jaw dropped wondering where the hell this band came from. My tastes were instantly expanded and my record collection changed forever.
this record, in ways, doesn't stand up to the likes of (some)Mogwai, Tortoise, don caballero, Directions In Music...but for a debut full length from a young band (a bunch of San Diegons *and one hometown boy*, coming from a scene where no one seemed to be slowing down) its worth the listen. Hopefully it will turn a few on to their later, more mature material and hopefully those few will get a chance to see them live...its worth it.

Beautiful Music.......2006-12-15
What more can I add to what people have already said about this album?
NOTHING really.
Overall an excellent selection of music. Likely a must for any audio collection ... and perhaps a source of inspiration for those who can trully sink into this compilation.
I'm very glad to have gotten it, despite hoping to get the actual soundtrack instead. No regrets whatsoever!
I will eventually also get the soundtrack also; too much beautiful music there too.
OH man................2006-02-03
Great album, but Jimmy Scott's version of "nothing compares 2 u" is in my opinion the best version of the song and my favorite. Unfortunately my girlfriend caught me listening and I wasn't holding any tears back. She started to cry as well. It's one of the few songs that can make me cry, feeling happy and sad at the same time.
Oh, this one is very, very good.......2006-01-24
Pedro the Libra always has good music in his films, and now he's released of compilation of what he listen to while writing the films. Why not? I love Pedro's mind, and there is some standout stuff here! Just to have new copies of Goldfrapp's "Paper Bag" and Nina Simone's rollicking "My Way" is worth the purchase.
Rarely do I get compilations (I mean, I can make most of them better), but this one is fab.
Two songs make it all worthwhile.......2004-05-16
A rare collection of songs with an interesting story behind. (Director Pedro Almodovar used the songs as inspiration while writing Talk to Her). Two songs should be mentioned: Nothing Compares 2 U song by Jimmy Scott and Qualsevol Nit Pot Sortir el Sol. Highly recommended.
An eclectic album that tactfully cheers for sadness.......2004-04-06
Around the corner from the arrival of Pedro Almodovar's latest movie "La Mala Educacion" (The Bad Education), the time seems appropriate to revisit the music that accompanied him during the writing of "Talk to Her", contained in this compilation appropriately titled "Viva La Tristeza" (Long Live Sadness).
From the opening bars of Shirley Horn's infinitely sad opener ("because love is the saddest thing when it goes away..."), [hypnotic] tunes blend with outright melancholic music segments in many different languages and an assortment of musical styles resulting in an overall eclectic album that borders a sad cliff without ever walking over. How else can you cheer for sadness? Only music capable of feeding Almodovar's muses can take on such a delicate task.

Album Description
Following the critical success of Tristeza's third full-length "A Colores", the group gathered in San Diego and Tijuana to put together this audio/visual release of new and exclusive songs. The nine brand new audio tracks on the CD finds Tristeza in an ambient haze rolling along dubbed out bass-lines and abstract compositions. The DVD contains a 30 minute handmade tour film exploring Tristeza's psychedelic vision based on lonely hours traveling across the U.S., Japan and Mexico. The DVD also contains a bonus video for "Stumble On Air" from the 'A Colores' full-length."
Customer Reviews:
Interesting .......2007-03-06
Tristeza are/was a great band. Spine and Sensory was brilliant, and Dream Signals was rather stunning, yet verging a bit too close to New Age territory. I just have to say that although I own and enjoy A Colores, I think the band lost its edge when Lavalle left. The Album Leaf is boring and uninspired sounding to me. He should have stayed with Tristeza. The loss of his guitar and songwriting skills are very apparent on these newer releases. There is no more "punch" like the group had on Spine and Sensory. It's almost as if the band has gone too soft. I do like their album covers, however, very cool.
Potent Material.......2006-10-15
If you prefer quality over quantity you'll agree that half an hour of raw, melodic, and rythmically brilliant material is far better than an hour and a half of filler. Not a bad song on this one, however skip it if you seek a lengthy album of polished fluff ...and good riddance to Jim LaValle by the way, Tristeza's best works have been accomplished in his absence!
indeed, estoy llena con tristeza.......2006-09-03
Meloncholy, and a little heart broken; as much as I don't want to admit it, I was let down by Tristeza. I was incredibly uplifted and unbelievably stunned by the beauty and melodic intesity of "A Colores," but then, once the much anticipated "En Nuestro Desafio" was revealed...suddenly, I'm wondering what the heck is going on. Nothing but droning, short spurts of would be greatness, held back genius. The bonus DVD was momentarily exciting, but, unfortunately, I expected a enlightening documentary but instead received a strange concoction of blurry, droning landscapes viewed through the car window. I must not be on the same page. I thought Tristeza had greatly evolved from their predecessors of "Dream Signals in Full Circles" and "Spine and Sensory." Both were great warm-up albums that led to "A Colores" as a charming gold medal. There was nothing left but to await the next plateau. I feel they've gone backwards or perhaps, skewed into an alternate galaxy that is, perhaps, too far out into the unknown for such enthusiastic fans anticipating post-rock glory. "A Colores" is a masterpiece and with "En Nuestro Desafio" I'm left scratching my head. I might not be getting it. Then again, maybe that is the strange thrill and beauty of a band like Tristeza. They don't want to be grouped or fully understood. This new album really embraces the psychedelia and abandons the post-rock edge that mesmorized me in "A Colores." Jimmy Lavalle must have gotten really comfortable with his somber side project "The Album Leaf"...doing his poorly executed "Sigur Ros" thing, and forgot about Tristeza. It saddens me. I would recommened that new fans investigate the first three albums and then look at "En Nuestro Desafio" to see how a great thing drastically plummeted. Post-rockers, run. Maybe this is a joke, an early Halloween thing and soon, the real Tristeza will emerge. I'll say this album is "okay" with a few promising songs because I'm still holding on to the good times.

Decent electro-adaptation for a traditionally unflattering transition.......2007-05-30
I have certainly heard worse remix albums, but this one still hardly would justify a purchase, Tristeza fan or otherwise. There is a reason that we have hardly heard of any of these remixers, and despite a few standout tracks it becomes increasingly evident amongst a formless, shifting majority of ambient filler. Electronically, the album starts off decently enough, not so much paying homage to this textured instrumental band as they are using a few riffs here and there to expand whatever brand of knob-twiddling they are fond of. A few of these artists manage to reinvent their work under a compelling new pulse, while others merely demonstrate a particular knack for making something sound bouncy, but all together there are too many noise-centric collages that go nowhere by artists who cannot maintain that sort of ambiance which distract from the few worthy remixes to make this album a standout remix delivery.
Watch Mystery Science Theater 3000.......2006-01-18
I became a fan of Tristeza's after hearing "Respira" on a Better Looking Records sampler. After purchasing Dream Signals in Full Circles followed by A Colores, I decided to try this remix album on for size.
After listening to it all the way through, Styrofoam's "Casio" stands out among the rest as the best track on the disc. Picture Tristeza writing the score for an NES game and add some beats.
Like one reviewer said, this album isn't for every occasion, but most good albums aren't. You wouldn't throw on "The Moon & Antarctica" at a party, would you?
Far more inspired than most remix albums.......2005-03-15
Most remix albums are rehashes, sparse with ideas that stand on their own and short on long-term replayability. What makes Mixed Signals stand out from the flood of remix albums is most of these versions easily stand on their own and even enhance the sampled parts of the originals. By focusing and expanding on the introduction of the song, Wendy & Carl's take on "Opiate" creates a new sense of gorgeous morning haziness from the original. The new version of "Casio" is catchy glitchy laptop techno pop. And Cheetah's "Diagram of Suburban Chaos" is arguably better than the original - it's not hard to imagine Tristeza themselves sounding like this with a couple albums more worth of progression.
While not every track on here hits the level of these, and it's not as ultimately fulfilling or cohesive as a new Tristeza album, there are enough inspired tracks here to make this worthwhile for Tristeza fans. Considering Tristeza's own output is frustratingly sparse, I'm happy this got released at all.
As a new electronica release: 3 stars
For Tristeza fans who like electronica: 4 stars
Not the same as dream signals.......2003-12-12
Well if your looking for another CD like Dream Signals this is not it. But the album isnt realy bad or anything it simply goes down a different path than the Dream signals album (Which it should because it is the remixes if the that album).
Mixed signals goes down an interesting path thats kind of a cross between ambient and something else. With very interesting sounds and the occasional melodies to go along with thim. The songs are very down tempo and are quite interesting if you have the patients. But for me I dont think this CD is something you cant put on and listen to unless its in the background or if your in the specific mood. I was dissapointed when I got the album, I just thought that the remixes would be a lot cooler and more listenable. I do not get the same listening enjoyment from this album as i do other Tristeza releases.
Very disapointing.......2003-06-08
Dream signals in full circles is a great album, but this is terrible! it ruins one good song after another. Well, it gets two stars though, there are two-three pretty good songs on the album... but I prefer the original.

Customer Reviews:
The definitive Baden Powell record.......2005-11-29
This record was made in Brasil in 1966 and is Baden Powell's first collaboration with famed Jazz producer and writer Joachim Berendt for the German label Saba. It immortalizes some of Baden Powell's most adventurous, inventive, energetic playing ever. To my ear, it sounds like a lot of first takes were chosen. There are lots of little rough corners that add to the lively musicality. Contrast this release with the Brazilian reissue "O Som de Baden Powell", which has a lot of (again, to my ear) second takes of the same sessions and therefore features a slightly more polished sound.
Very inspiring, educational and refreshing in these days of perfect-sounding records tweaked to excess in a digital audio workstation. Two such examples are the opening and closing tracks "Tristeza" and "O Astronauta". In these two tracks, Baden is a tightrope walker, plunging along the high wire of improvisation. At points, it sounds like he's faltering, about to fall down, only to recover with a fluorish in the next bar. The man simply knew the fingerboard.
Not coincidentally, both tracks mentioned above have the same structure of a "trio: guitar bass and drums" (Another high of this release is the quaint short technical descriptions of each track, most likely Berendt's work).
The next set of tracks that stand out in my opinion are the two in the form of "duo: guitar and bass", These are "Round Midnight" and "Manha de Carnaval". I have come to regard these two as the "definitive version" of each of these tunes (perhaps with the exception of Monk's solo piano version of "Midnight").
Four of the tracks are a result of his then current fascination with the Afro-brazilian music and rituals of Bahia. The sounds of "Saravah", "Canto de Ossanha", "Canto de Xango" and "Som do Carnaval" blend the atabaque (Afro-brazilian ritual conga-like hand drum) with more traditional Rio samba instruments to great effect. "Som do Carnaval" has Baden playing agogo bells, but no guitar.
If there is any track that has not stood the test of time is "Invencao em 7 1/2", which sounds like a long-lost two-part invention, but is done with (since dated) tape vari-speed trickery. At least they're upfront about it in the liner notes.
Rounding up the offer, there is an incredible guitar solo version of "Das Rosas" a great song by Dorival Caymmi. Baden delivers another "definitive version" in my book.
This album belongs in many "best-of" lists and will remain relevant for years to come.
A magical record.......2001-07-26
Of Baden Powell's recordings I have only heard these, plus Consolacao featured on Herbie Mann's recommendable Do The Bossa Nova. I rate these songs among the best ever!
One of the all-time classics in any genre.......2000-10-10
I heard this album on BASF vinyl in 1970 and it single-handedly formed the bedrock of my entire and ongoing appreciation and love of Brazilian music. A tour-de-force covering the spectrum from powerful and driving 'balancado' changes (Tristeza), transcendental 6/8-4/4 macumba (Canto de Xango), tasteful and subtle jazz ballad voicings (Round Midnight) and simple, classic percussion ensemble (Som do Carnaval, which he planned to overdub guitar and bass tracks but decided to leave "as is" for the album).
Recorded in the late 60s, it anchors a period in his life that produced his best work in my opinion, and is for me the *definitive* Baden Powell and one of the pieces of music that I would put in a top ten all-time collection to be included in a space-time capsule of music from planet earth.
This title was out-of-print for several years, and I am happy to see it available again for people who have not had the benefit of experiencing its sublime beauty and energy.
Tristeza on Guitar - Available again.......2000-07-06
I had first listened to this album, in an old, worn vynil format, for it had been out of print for years. Luckily, my Dad had a friend in Brazil who was also a Baden-Powell fan. T he album starts with a beautiful arrangement of "Tristeza", by Haroldo Lobo and Niltinho. It goes through 3 afro-sambas, resulting from the partnership of a young Baden-Powell and the late Vinicius de Moraes. The arrangement of Monk's "Round Midnight" is surprisingly tasteful and fitting to the guitar. Bonfa's "Manha de Carnaval" invokes a melancholy only those who have seen older, more romantic Carnaval occurences in Brazil can fully relate to. "Das Rosas" pays a nice hommage to Bahia's Dorival Caymmi(and not the only one made by Baden to this composer, the most famous being "A Lenda do Abaete", recorded a few years later). Despite its title, "Tristeza on Guitar" is not a sad album, but a romantic and dreamy excursion into the many facets of Brazilian music, Baden's early influences and the beauty of the guitar.
By the way, Tristeza IS written with a Z, and his name is NOT Roberto Baden-Powell like it's been published lately: He is Baden-Powell de Aquino, born and raised in the Rio suburb of Varre-e-Sai.

Customer Reviews:
hypnotique.......2005-12-30
an album i have enjoyed for a long time now, tristezas "dream signals.." never gets old. well, sometimes. the music is incredibly hypnotic. dub inflected bass and repetitious building guitar lines spiral inward and outward creating avery dreamlike atmosphere. a very hazy one at that. with the excpetion of "shifty drifty" the tracks make a fractal musical landscape. some say the drumming isnt so great, and truly its not awe inspiring, it just does its job. which is to keep the rhythm. it also allows the guitar bass and keyboards do the whirling configurations they do best. other bands have proven to be very good at making songs chock full of riffs and drums (don caballero for one, and dianogah on a nother hand - do check them both out) but that is where tristeza is a different band with a different approach. while some may want to compare it to mogwai, i cant really agree. it doesnt have the explosive quality that mogwai often embodies, and godspeed you black emperor are in another category all together. this is very dreamy hypnotic music for fans of dub and maybe even some dance music. it is a very good album for a late night chill session or an early morning come-down. also great to read too but the bass lines alone had me paying more attention. they just really cement the band and allow the guitars to dance. i would maybe put this more in line with some of the OUT HUD stuff that exists out there. and if you are looking for a tristeza sound that more closely resembles the mogwais and explosions in the sky out there, then i suggest you pick up "spine and sensory" it is their first album and is also very worth picking up. it has a more post rock feel that many would find appetizing. but for a wholly different approach to instrumental rock, do check out this fine release. and dont complain to me if you think it sounds "new age", what the hell is new age anyway? i mean this isn't enya or anything. ^_^
melodic inspiring melodies.......2005-11-02
I have to say this cd is quite good. I am a big Album Leaf fan, but Tristeza definately has more of an authentic sound. Beautiful hooks that never get old and inspiring melodies dominate the theme to this album. I recommend it. Perfect "deep thought" music. If you enjoyed this album I also recommend "Spine and Sensory" which is a bit different, but along the same realm....
"Eh".......2005-07-02
This album was not as i expected it to be... i read all the great reviews and sort of anticipated a better quality album... or rather, something more intricate, more creative. It just sounds so repetitive. I am a huge fan of instrumental rock, godspeed! you black emperor is a great orchestral rock group for example, and mum, sigur ros, and the album leaf are all great examples. Tristeza is not for me, i just dont believe that the instruments used in the music are perfect for instrumental rock... because theres no variety, and you expect the same thing over and over again. Its slow and pretty boring.
Doesn't fit my tastes
4.5 Stars: Excellent discovery.......2005-03-12
I was introduced into Tristeza just a couple of days ago. Having enjoyed The Album Leaf, where their Jimmy LaValle currenly plays, it is no surprise that I found Tristeza's "Dream Signals in Full Circles" highly enjoyable. They sound very similar. Think mellower Mogwai, and you're pretty close to the sound of these guys.
Though I wasn't terribly impressed with the drum work (the only reason I gave it 4.5 stars), the rest of the instrumentation (there's no vocals in here) is lovely. The album can take you on a journey of self-discovery if you let it. The music goes in certain circles, much like the cover of the album or the title, almost reaching a minimalist state at times, though not quite.
Grab a copy and play it over and over again... you will love it too.
believe the hype.......2003-09-18
