London Symphony Orchestra is the best in the world!.......2006-07-20

This CD done by the London Symphony Orchestra is the best available of the music from Giselle. It's superb. It's better than the music at any performance I have attended or watched on DVD, and it's better than the Giselle CD available by a Russian orchestra. The English always add that extra touch, the subtle nuisances that set this recording apart. It brings alive the enchantment of Giselle.

One of the finest recordings of Giselle.......2004-03-09

Adam's ever popular "Giselle" has been well served on disc, and this recording from 1986 by the London Symphony Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas is arguably one of the finest. Tilson Thomas, with a representative and well-recorded selection of the score (running for almost 77 minutes), proves this ballet music can stand on its own. Recommended.

The best version of Giselle I have ever heard.......2003-01-04

Having seen Giselle many times and listened to the music many more, I've discovered that there are good versions of the music-and then there are bad. This one is certainly one of the good versions. The tempo is fast where it needs to be and slow where it is appropriate. The orchestra is simply wonderful. Plus, it's all on one CD-a rare find.

The first great ballet.......2002-09-15

Adolphe Adam wrote several quite pleasant ballet scores and one genuine masterpiece: Giselle. Giselle was the first great ballet, setting a standard later followed by the the ballets of Delibes and Tchaikovsky. While Giselle -- as the earliest great ballet -- is somewhat less sophisticated musically than the later ballets of Delibes and Tchaikovsky, it is charming, very beautiful, and very moving emotionally. In fact, it is quite simply unique. In my opinion, no one who loves classical music -- or simply great music in any genre -- should be without a recording of this uniquely beautiful work.

Greatest Collection of Classical I have........2006-12-14

I don't care much for compilation CDs. Usually they are someone else's favorite set of songs from that genre or composer. I usually like the songs, but when I get into listening to the other songs in the genre or by the same composer I find songs that I'm more fond of.

This collection is different.

I try not to be too generous with my top ratings in iTunes for songs, I don't give out a four or five stars to just anything, but many of the songs from this collection make up a good chunk of my top rated songs. I just love this collection.

This is not a good digital recording.......1999-07-27

There is a 'record player' hum in the background when you try to listen to various tracks on these CDs. The compilation is wonderful. The Quality of the recording is very disappointing. The outside of the album cover reads DDD which I thought to mean clean and clear all digital recording. Don't be deceived by the cover.

The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

I saw this CD set in a store and told my friend I would like to have it for my birthday. She bought it on the spot for me. I am so glad she did. I really wasn't a classical music fan, but I am now. I listen to this CD set while I am driving home from my job as a broadcaster. It does help you to relax. I even wrap Christmas presents to the music. I would also like to make the suggestion of finding an open field where there are lighting bugs and play this CD while watching the lighting bugs. It is better than a fireworks show. If you are into classical music this is a CD that you must have.

There is nothing like the Cunning Little Vixen. It's a masterpiece, and it's not even Janacek's best Opera! This recording, sung in english, serves the work well.

The orchestra and chorus are very well lead by Rattle. The vixen's dream in the first act is beautifully played. The translation is easy on the ears, fits the music well, and all the singers have excellent diction. Lillian Watson's Vixen is well sung, a nice lyric voice that suits the part very nicely. "Can it be that I am beautiful?" is heart-stoppingly beautiful. Sir Thomas Allen is his usual peerless self. As far as I'm conserned, he is the Forester. His wonderful song in the Tavern is so incredably well sung it should be entered into the hall of fame. Diana Montague is an excellent fox, and Gwynne Howell and Robert Tear are touching and wonderfull as the priest and the Schoolmaster. Howell also is a properly Pompus badger, and Tear is a humoros Mosquito. Nicholas Fowell is a creepy Harasta and Karen Shelby makes a nice Dog. 5/5

A Splendid Remastering of the 1991 EMI Session.......2004-03-24

This underrated modern opera, this time in English and conducted by Simon Rattle, is one most opera-lovers should own. I found this English performance warmly dramatic and listenable. Rattle's reading is more romantic and well-rounded than the Decca classic. Should the translation dissuade the buyer? Not at all. Some of the translated expressions are Brit expressions, but they work beautifully. When in doubt, just but the Mackerras version too.

The remastering here has opened up the acoustic of the original recording so the performance sounds as though it might have happened yesterday. The orchestra is alert and playful. The singers cannot be bettered. Lilian Watson is a superb, characterful Vixen Sharp-Ears, Diana Montague is a Fox to die for and Thomas Allen is -- well -- Thomas Allen. Did the man ever cut a bad record?

At roughly 100 minutes, and in a superbly packaged set with an all-new booklet with helpful notes and libretto, what are you waiting for?

I place this recording among my top 25 opera recordings in any language. And that's scary. Five stars, without remorse.
