Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Chalk up the unevenness and overall mediocrity of Mariposa, the third album from Tejano star Jennifer Peña, to growing pains. The talented teen seems stuck in the rote sounds of today's Tejano music--sleepy accordions, weepy vocals, sing-song choruses. The album starts out promisingly with the first single, "Tengo Miedo," but it quickly dissipates into an awkward blend of standard radio cumbias, mariachi numbers, and dance-floor ditties. Peña's voice is still strong and focused, but the album has no concrete direction. Coproducers Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Brian "Red" Moore give the young star little to work with. Particularly out of place is "Chica Preferida" (whose English version, "Let Me Be the One," is also included), a club track that seems out of place and sounds laughably outdated. Peña deserves better than this. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Essential listening for the guitar lover.......2006-02-11

Pepe Romero's tribute to his late father Celedonio is not only a beautiful celebration of the life of one of the most important guitarists ever, but a great triumph simply on the merits of the pieces presented and the performances thereof. Of particular interest are the heartfelt renderings of transcriptions of piano works by Schumann, Brahms, Schubert and Chopin; while the Romero family has always taken pains to make sure the world has the opportunity to enjoy the riches of the Spanish guitar repetoire, Pepe's beautiful performances of the transcriptions referred to above allow him to display the full breadth of his musical understanding. Wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2001-02-17

I can't add too much to what as already been said in praise of this wonderful CD. Pepe is brilliant. I recently saw him in concert and his confidence with the instrument blew me away. I have never seen such confident, fluid, beautiful movement on the classical guitar. And it comes out in the music.

Emotionally stunning, technically flawless, Pepe is the best and this is my favorite classical guitar record.

5 out of 5 stars For the love of a father, and of the music they shared.......2000-01-25

This CD, a collection of songs that Pepe Romero learned from and shared with his father, is a finely, wonderfully, lovingly crafted work evoking in the listener the emotions that the music brings to Mr. Romero. They are all songs played not as displays of technical skill, though the skill is impressive, but as celebrations of the joy and love that music and relationships can bring. Ranging from pieces by Bach to Pepe's father, Celedonio, there isn't a clinker in the bunch, and much to be savored sweetly on a sunny morning with a coffee in hand.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest guitarist in the world. This CD again shows why!.......1999-03-21

An inspiring, emotional tribute of repertory taught to Pepe Romero by his late father, Celedonio, who himself was an incredible guitarist and composer. Flawless technique, combined with Spanish heart and soul, set a standard for all other guitarists to emulate. Repertory ranges from beginning guitar pieces to flamenco-inspired pieces by his father. Also includes everything from Bach, Brahms, and Chopin to Spanish composer Moreno Torroba.

5 out of 5 stars His best solo CD yet!.......1999-03-21

Pepe Romero is perhaps the most gifted guitarist living today, and it shows with this CD. A long time fan, I'm a little biased, but I would absolutely recommend this CD to any fan of the classic guitar. And it has a great and unusual variety of music. Great for beginning listeners.

5 out of 5 stars Lively and cheerful!.......2002-11-29

This gem of a CD is the South American counterpart to Chatham Baroque's other release of Hispanic music, "Espanoleta!". "Sol y Sombra", which translates as "Sun and Shade", not only contains instrumental music from the accomplished quartet of string players, but also features the spirited, operatic voice of soprano Carol Ann Allred. Guest percussionist Danny Mallon spices things up with frequent accompaniments of castanets, tambourine and drum. Of all Chatham Baroque's excellent releases, I find this recording, along with "Espanoleta!", to be the most fun to listen to. For more early Hispanic music from the New World, try "Missa Mexicana" by Andrew Lawrence-King and the Harp Consort, and "El Milagro de Guadalupe" by Savae.

4 out of 5 stars shadows dancing on the walls.......2001-04-21

I've been listening to my copy of "Sol y Sombra" by the Chatham Baroque all night...

It is one heck of a recording. Sun and Shade indeed! This collection of secular and sacred music from the Latin American baroque period is outstanding.

This is music that one can slip into like a trustworthy pair of old slippers. "Sol y Sombra" is worth meditating upon; but at the same time is the kind of music one can play in the background with the repeat button on for hours as you converse late into the night with Good friends.

Psalm 68:25 says: "The singers went on, the musicians after them, In the midst of the maidens beating tambourines." I imagine the same kind of scene here...shadows dancing on the walls--cast there by the firelight...the alternately reflective and then lively music driving them on.

The playing and singing are lovely. Carol Ann Allred joins Custer LaRue in my pantheon of favorite singers on the Dorian label.

This the music of a people that was moved by the presence of God in the midst of all their imperfections. I can feel it...so will you.

"Bless God in the congregations, Even the LORD, you who are of the fountain of Israel." (Psalm 68:26)

Get a copy of "Sol y Sombra" and see for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD INTERPRETATIONS.......2000-04-12

GOOD QUALITY, PRETTY SOUND ...BUT A LITTLE CONFUSED MIX OF PERIODS AND COMPOSERS...DESPITE ALL, IT IS GOOD TO HAVE IN YOUR BAROQUE COLLECTION

5 out of 5 stars Sensuous, soulful, spirited..........1999-08-22

Sensuous, soulful, and spirited are not qualities that I usually associate with baroque music. This recording by Chatham Baroque is an amazingly refreshing example of baroque at it's best. This is the best CD I've bought this year!

5 out of 5 stars CONTINUING THE DEFINITIVE LECUONA SERIES.......2004-09-14

In Each volume, Tirino's playing is Herculean. He understands all the forms-and then plays them flawlessly with total feel, command, poise, and technical panache this music requires. The rumba will have you begging for more! I don't think anyone could ever surpass the perfection Tirino brings to his Lecuona disks. Gold standard.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2001-05-17

I love this disc. Tirino is extraordinary from the first note to the last. How dare anyone call this great artist any other name but MAESTRO. This is a must have for any music lover. In fact, this is my favorite disk out of the whole Lecuona series on BIS. Get it, or you'll be waiting till the end of time for a better recording by any artist on these works, or on any Lecuona for that matter. 5 stars plus 100!

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE MUSIC AND PLAYING.......2001-05-04

This disc is fabulous from begining to end. Tirino is phenomenal-don't even DARE to think otherwise! This music swings and is beautiful from top to bottom. I'm going to buy all the discs in this series-if they are as good as this one, boy-I'm in for a treat. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars PIANIST OF PIANISTS.......2001-04-24

What more can be said of Tirino and his recordings of Lecuona's music except TOTAL, ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. This disc stands out for several reasons: The spirited Rumba with voices and chorus, and the Danzas Cubanas which are real gems. (as well as Vals Gitano). These danzas require EXTREME Left hand control of technique along with many colors and swing. I as a Cuban know this very well. I have never heard these pieces played better. Tirino's HUGE technique, beautiful sound, varied phrasing, and delicate subtelties never fail to amaze the listener-its incredible. Forget any negative comments-they are silly, stupid and uniformed. A better pianist, and better playing of this music you will never, EVER hear. If you want the best recordings of Lecuona's music, Tirino's series on the BIS label is IT. Get Lecuona's own recordings as well, as a point of reference. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars PERFECTION: PIANO PLAYING DOESEN"T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.......2001-04-24

I own the entire Tirino/Lecuona series on the BIS label and I am a teacher at a major musical institution. I have heard a lot of piano playing in my life, including much Latin American piano music, which I have a special affinity for. Simply stated: Tirino plays this music like a God. Pianism of this high a calibre dosen't get any better. Period. Of all the discs in this series, this one is my favorite,(along with Volume 3). The rumba sizzles, and Tirino infuses it with breadth, stylistic colors and rhythm with real panache. And he wrote the Spanish lyric himself! Amazing. Tirino's technical skills are monumental, BIG, Lisztian in ability, certainly far above "Clementi" or "Scarlatti", good heavens. His playing is perfect for Lecuona-in fact-for ANYTHING. Beyond staggering technique he has a singing quality and subtelty of nuance and phrasing rarely heard nowadays-flexibility of sound with thousands of variations in phrasing, tone, dynamic, and pedal subtelties that make his musicianship stand FAR above many others. His tone is rich, full, NEVER BANGING (enough already, please!), aristocratic-never vulgar. Anyone who really knows good piano playing will hear it. Tirino's playing is very warm. The Danzas Cubanas (especially Lola esta de Fiesta) are magical. Put on Lecuona's recordings and compare them side by side to Tirino's. AMAZINGLY IDENTICAL! Fact: Tirino has been recognized as the Lecuona authority in the world for a reason-TIME magazine, The New York Times, and Stereo Review can't be wrong. Neither is the Lecuona family, who have endorsed his recordings, interpretations and work. There might not even be a discussion about Lecuona these days, had it not been for the work of Tirino.

In summary-Tirino is a GREAT artist and one would be hard pressed to imagine anyone else coming along and improving on his recordings. Comments made to the contrary can be dismissed as silly, uninformed vulgarity. If you want to hear great Lecuona, and great Piano playing by a tremendous artist, this disc and others in this series are for you. If not, it might be advisable to learn music, and re-wire your brain to try and listen differently.

They warned us. This album cover doesn't show them hippie-ing around in a field this time - the neat eyeliner and the crisp black leather say "we're rocking for The Man now - are you gonna follow us anyway?"

As enamored as I was with their self-titled debut, I had to take a chance. It was a jolt at first - the guitars rock harder in kind of a generic arena style, vocalist Susana Alva sounds a bit less winsome - couldn't they have done just one more album in their previous style? Add to that the fact that the melodies in many cases are a little less memorable and the chords a little more play-it-safe, and I can't call this anything but a sophomore slump, combined with an ill-advised attempt to pander to a younger audience.

However, it may be that such a stylistic leap was necessary given the departure of keyboardist Raúl Osuna, whose absence seems to have something to do with their blanded out songwriting.

There's nothing here that's embarrassing, just more "ok" background songs rather than great stuff. This time around, the music for the best song, "Qué Más Da" (adapted as "Boba Niña Nice" for teen idol Belinda), was written outside the band.

Standouts that feature more of the band's creative input are "Díme Dónde," which starts out as a stuttering pop/funk track before blasting into all-out rock, and the idealistic, orchestral power ballad "Flotando Voy."

Perhaps to let us know that inside, they're still the same old smart Efecto Mariposa we came to know and love, they include a live version of "Sola" with the old-school arrangements (in fact, I wonder how much of that playing was really live). But the obligatory "sing-along" moment is unintentionally funny, as Susana only seems to trust the crowd with one word - the song's title! To be fair, the subsequent lyrical phrasing is probably too fast for a stadium crowd to enunciate.

"Metamorfosis 2" isn't bad, but I wonder if a band that created its original fan base with musically substantive pop can truly carry on without Raúl Osuna.

I love finding unique items and treasures and this CD by the boys in DD fits into that category. I have played it over and over and introduced this music to a wide variety of people. It is nice to hear music from a group that doesn't fit into a stereotypical genre of today's tunes. By the way, my 5 month old LOVES it! :) Rock on nephews!

    5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2005-04-11

Finally I can carry Dehra Dun around with me all the time. I fell in love with the meltiest of the melt at a live show and have been a fan ever since. Now that I can listen to them anytime I want to is FANTASTIC. I recommend Dehra Dun to anyone tired of the same old junk, especially the likes of Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez.

although i'm just your average listener without proper credibility in the way of technical musical analysis, i know a good thing when i hear it.

there is a vivacity and personality to it that is, however sadly, sort of rare. the music is intelligently engineered but manages to sound completely organic at the same time. it's lyrically distant enough to escape being sappy, but still steps far enough into your personal space for you to be able to relate on one level or another. the vocals are absolutely amazing... incredibly unique and versatile... borderline harsh at some points and downright lovely at others.

5 out of 5 stars Spirit of Melt captured on disc...is it possible.......2004-12-28

It's amazing to hear the spirit of melt oozing out of my stereo...one would think that this experience is only possible at a live show.

3 out of 5 stars Mariposa de Oro (or, "the golden butterfly").......2006-09-11

In the 1960's and 1970's, Dave Mason didn't make a single bad album. He did make one killer recording, 'Alone Together', and a number of mediocre discs, of which 1978's 'Mariposa de Oro' is one. While 1970's 'Alone Together' featured the perfect mix of gritty, churning rock and delicate ballads, most of Dave's subsequent releases were overly polished and never found an alternative to the soft-rock sound. Some of these albums were better than others (1971's 'Headkeeper' and 1975's 'Split Coconut' have a nice sound to them), and a few generated decent hits for Dave ('Let It Flow' and 'We Just Disagree'), but 'Mariposa de Oro' must be relegated to the bottom half of Dave's catalog. You know you're a soft-rocker when the only single released from your most recent album is your cover of a Shirelles hit from the 1960's (Gerry Goffin & Carole King's 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow'), and it only scales the charts to number thirty-nine. To Dave's credit, he does seem to recognize that the album as a whole is a bit of a sleeper, and tries to energize the package with numerous sharp electric guitar solo's, but they are just too few and far between, and too innocuous, to render the disc anything other than pop-lite.

But again, that doesn't mean this is a bad disc. The tracks are quite obviously painstakingly nurtured, and if anything come off as too polished, and too formulaic. Many of the songs feature lush vocal harmonies and layered instrumentation, incorporating everything from acoustic and electric guitars to harps, strings, horns and sythesizers. That description pretty much sums up 'All Gotta Go Sometime', 'Warm Desire', 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow', 'Share Your Love', 'Bird On the Wind', 'So Good To Be Home', and the closer, 'No Doubt About It'. By the time that closer comes around, you suspect Dave must have something new up his sleeve, but it's not to be. Adding just a bit of diversity are the a capella cover of the Percy Sledge hit, 'Warm and Tender Love' (featuring Stephen Stills on vocal harmonies), the funky opener, 'Don't It Make You Wonder' (sounding a bit like the Marshall Tucker Band, until the chorus chimes in...), and the second track, 'Searchin' (For a Feeling)', with its catchy, slow-rocking melody. Dave is certainly "searching for something deep inside", as the lyrics proclaim, but seldom finding 'it'. In fact, Dave is relying on the songwriting talents of not only Goffin & King on this disc, but also Jim Krueger, who contributed 'The Words', which became a staple in many of Dave Mason's concert tours. Jerry Williams songwriting talents are also on extended display as he shares three co-writes with Mason and pens two songs individually. Nevertheless, the lyrics seldom move beyond cliche-ish, with offerings such as "sooner or later you'll find, we all gotta go sometime", "nothing ventured, nothing gained", and "I'm livin' on a hope and a dream". Other familiar names handle the instrumentation, with Gerald Johnson on bass, Michael Finnigan on keyboards, Rick Jaeger on drums, and Ron Greene on percussion.

'Mariposa de Oro' probably never sold many CD's, and is currently out-of-print. The last CD version I saw advertised on eBay eventually brought $188. That's a bit too rich for my blood, especially for such a lean recording, so I used a cassette copy that I had dubbed to CD for this review. Such is the plight of many desirable yet obscure recordings from the '60's through the '80's, such as Laura Nyro's 'Nested' and Gil Scott-Heron's 'Bridges'. You may be able to find a few of these tracks on a Dave Mason compliation, as well as some on live Dave Mason recordings, and that may be the wiser choice rather than pursuing the original studio versions, unless you are a dedicated, died-in-the-wool Dave Mason fan. Pleasant enough, but not compelling. Three stars.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD!.......1998-06-29

I have been looking for this CD for about 12 years and finally found it at Amazon. Thanks Amazon! This is a wonderful listen -- I could listen to it all day and not get tired of it. Dave Mason is not only a great singer, but a great artist as well!

      Album Description

Orange County quintet April Sixth formed in 2002 in a barn on Mariposa Avenue, and since then they've been building a following one room at a time, winning secular fans and believers alike with passion, raw emotion, an explosive sound and their own unshakable faith. Inspired by the enthusiastic response to their live shows, the group embarked on their own do-it-yourself promotion junket, touring all over the west and southwest, creating their own community of fans around the April Sixth creed. This is more than just a bunch of talented musicians-- whether playing to a sold out crowd or to a handful of kids at a local venue, April Sixth attacks the stage as it if were their last chance to impact and change someone's life. This EP is a potent introduction to the band and will lead to the release of their full-length debut album in spring 2004.

1 out of 5 stars HYPE NO MORE.......2005-11-22

Geez.. I think other reviewers may be hyping this band.. or they are family members of April Sixth, because based on this EP they are NOT the next big thing. The bands heart may be in the right place but where are the songs? No real hooks, little drive, thin guitars and forgettable singing puts this in the recycle bin.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sounding Band!!!!.......2003-12-08

I've seen this band preform several times. They really put their heart in everything they do! I love this EP and I know I'm going to love their first LP due out in the spring of 2004. Do yourself a favor and buy this EP before it gets hard to find. Rock on guys!!

5 out of 5 stars the next BIG thing!.......2003-11-12

I have seen and heard this band live several times! They have a sound that grabs your attention! I have listened to their music over and over. Their music is addicting, I can't get enough of it! Every song has so much emotion behind it. the lead singer has one of the best voices I have heard in a long time. He and the rest of the band put everything into their live shows. Go see them live!!! Trust me, you will not be disappointed! They ROCK! I know they are going to be BIG!...It's just a matter of time! I can't wait till their LP comes out!!! They have SOOO many great songs that are not on their EP! APRIL SIXTH ROCKS!!!!

5 out of 5 stars You Need to Check Out APRIL SIXTH!.......2003-11-09
