If you want to find out if you'll enjoy this collection of guitar transcriptions, listen to track 7, the "Military Tap" by Mariano Mores. If you can resist the ingenuity of the arrangement and the verve of the performance, this disc is not for you. For further evidence, try track 13, Astor Piazzolla's "Midnight in Buenos Aires," an amazing example of Villadangos's imagination as an arranger. This guitarist, who comes from Buenos Aires himself, has obviously absorbed the tango tradition and idiom completely. You might think guitar solo arrangements would be disappointing, lacking the inherent color of the typical tango band. Not so in this exhilarating collection, which also juxtaposes internationally known tango composers like Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel with others much less well known. Villadangos also supplies his own helpful program notes for this completely satisfying, memorable recital. --Leslie Gerber

This is by far one of the best guitar CDs and the best performance I have ever heard. So far I have 3 cds from Villadangos and they are all brilliant. Strongly recommended!

This is a wonderful album of acoustic guitar music. I've always loved the Tango and the so-called "classical" guitar. This album brings them together delightfully. The album transports me to a smoke-filled Argentinean nightclub where the Tango is danced very passionately. I agree with the review to this album; tract 13 is wonderful.
If you are into the Tango or guitar music or just want to be transported, in your mind, to a different time and place, buy this disc.

Most of the music on this CD sounds the same. The recording quality is very poor.

Contemporary interpretations of the classic Argentine Tangos.......2003-01-31

Do you remember the great rendition of Milonga Triste from the movie The Tango Lesson? That was Hugo Diaz, and that piece is on the album "Hugo Diaz en Buenos Aires." That Hugo Diaz was a harmonica player, and the Hugo Diaz of Trio Hugo Diaz is a Uraguayan master bandoneonist. Harmonicas and bandoneons have a different sound. Don't buy this disk if you think the harmonica player Hugo Diaz produced it.

I like the instrumentation of the Trio Hugo Diaz. In a tango ensemble, there is a certain amount of improvisation and give-and-take between the bandoneón, the double bass, and the piano. The Hugo Diaz Trio does a good job in this regard. It reminds me of a jazz band in how they work together. If you consider tango to be a form of jazz, you already understand this concept. It works well when the band has a certain chemistry or "je ne sais quoi." You know it when you hear it, and you enjoy it.

This is the traditional tango music composed by Castillo, Gardel, Fresedo, Troilo, Martinez, Juan de Dios Filberto, etc. It has a unique sound. My first question: is it danceable? Yes, it is danceable. I feel that it is appropriate for salon tango, but probably not for fantasy tango dancers. The next question would be whether you could expect to hear it at an upcoming milonga. I think not. Although very popular in Europe, the Trio Hugo Diaz does not have a large following in the United States and Canada. Those people who are disc jockeys at milongas tend to prefer the tried and true old favorites. There may be a few of the arrangments in this disk may be considered by some to be a little too "jazzy" and non-traditional. I like it when people at milongas ask the DJ "Wow, that was great! What was it?" I like the variety.

This compilation brings more exquisite tango music sung by the greatest tango singer of all times.

Gardel voice is brought to life in this recordings thanks to nimbus records superb technology, music played by gardel guitarrist sound clear and more detailed than previous compilations.

This album as well as Vol.1 is a must for every Gardel lover or music enthusiast, you won't regret this album if yopu are an early opera singer lover.

Gardel is a natural baritone with perfect intonation, musicality and sense for drama and passion, you will be impress even if you don't speak spanish.

A Greatest Hits selection........2006-01-29

If you only buy 1 Trio Pantango CD in your whole life ... then buy this one. This CD should be described as a "Greatest Hits" album as it draws tracks from all their past efforts. If you are a fan of the big orchestral sound, then this CD is not for you. If like me however, you prefer your Tango to be clear, simple, passionately interpreted and expertly played, then you will definitely enjoy this CD. Ever since I first heard Trio Pantango I was impressed by the crispness of the instruments and the fine delineation of sounds - I hope they will appeal to you in the same way.

Sentimental Favorites.......2002-02-02

Trio Pantango has been a sentimental favorite of mine. It is a small ensemble consisting of clarinet, guitar, and bass. They present an "intimate" sound and prove that you don't have to have a bandoneón in order to play tango music. It is a true international sound, and the group is made up of an Argentine and two Germans. I first heard this group at a tango ball in Montreal, and I liked them so much that own half of their discography. Trio Pantango's "El Ultimo Café" was one of the top 100 tango disks in Tango Montreal's 2000 survey of Argentine tango music. That recommendation motivated me to buy their other titles. I really liked "El Ultimo Café" and "El Garron," but I like "Libertango" much better.

The disk is a compilation of some of the great titles by the great tango writers of the 20th Century, including "Quejas de Bandoneón," "Che bandoneón," "La cumparsita," "Café 1930," "Jalousie," "Libertango," and many more. "Libertango" has always been a favorite Piazzola piece, and every time I hear it I visualize the scene from Sally Porter's movie "Tango Lesson." My impression is that this disk is a wonderful modern interpretation of some of the best 20th Century tango. I was not disappointed, and I recommend it not just to dancers but also to music lovers who appreciate the tango genre.
