4 out of 5 stars It's Only R N R & The Stones Do It So Well.......2007-05-21

Just another solid effort from the Stones with the rockers and ballads. The latest album from them, that I have decided to add to my collection. The classics and the not-so-familiar ones.It has the classics,If You Can't Rock Me,Ain't Too Proud To Beg & It's Only R N R. I have discovered some new ones too.Mainly hearing them from alternate radio. Those are Till The Next Goodbye,Dance Little Sister and If You Really Want To be My Friend, the latter, being my newest discovery. If you want to discover new classics, perhaps this album may be the one for you.it was for me.If you are a Stones fanatic, you probably know them.If you are casual, you will make a major discovery.Buy it and you will not regret it....

4 out of 5 stars solid rock.......2007-05-07

Even though I'm giving this album a 4 rating, it's more like 3.5. I'm totally serious when I say my least two favorite tracks on this album are the title song (which was never interesting to me) and their version of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg". The rest of the album rules, though.

My favorites would be "Luxury" with its beautiful vocal melody, and the more emotional tunes such as "Time Waits for No One" and "If You Really Want to Be My Friend". Also on the album are short catchy little rockers ("Dance Little Sister" and "Short and Curlies"). The album closes with a really good groove rocker called "Fingerprint Files" and I mine as well mention that the album opens with the perfect hard rockin' "If You Can't Rock Me".

Also worth mentioning is that the piano playing throughout the whole album is the main highlight. I love it. It's the best thing about it, in my opinion. This album catches the Stones between going commercial and sticking with their hard rock roots. The whole "caught in between" period is interesting to me.

An album worth owning? Yes.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars........2007-04-02

This album, like "goats head soup," suffers a bad hand of fate in the chronology of the rolling stones discography. Following closely on the heels of perhaps the greatest recording streak in rock and roll history, the 1968 to 1972 run of "beggars banquet," "let it bleed," and "exile on main street,"this album at first seems a bit weak. But be fair, the perfection of the `68 to `72 years could not last. If removed from the context of its proximity to those masterpieces, "it's only rock and roll," is an outstanding album. "If you can't rock me," "it's only rock `n roll," and "dance little sister," are three excellent rock numbers. "Time waits for no one" is a great, beautiful ballad. The reggae inflections juxtaposed with hard rock power chords on "luxury," equates to a pure piece of fun, and the gritty funk of "Fingerprint file," is another success. Even the seemingly tossed off piece of boogie fluff, "short and curlies," is listenable in its own slightly cheesy way. Throughout the record keith richards and mick taylor provide fine guitar licks, and jaggers vocals are effortly expressive, whether emoting cynicism, aggression, or just plain old swagger. This is a fine and fun rock and roll record. Any band should be proud to have made such a thing. And I would highly recommend that you pick up a copy. Makes a wonderful addition to any household.

5 out of 5 stars Under-rated Stones Album--Give it a Listen.......2007-03-06

This is my favorite Stones album for sheer listening pleasure. It may not be as weighty or as blues-based as some of their other work, but it strikes a chord with me every time I listen to it. The songs are extremely good, with the rich, layered sound found on albums featuring guitar virtuoso Mick Taylor. After Taylor's departure, the Stones' music has a leaner, edgier sound. There's nothing at all wrong with that, but Taylor's melodic ear contributed so much to the Stones' music when he was with them.
'Time Waits for No One' is a masterpiece on many levels, as is 'Till the Next Goodbye', plus the album has the additional classic 'It's Only Rock and Roll". Many of the songs are less known, but are equal to the Stones' great works that preceded and followed this album. There is a nice mix of hard rock, blues, ballad, reggae, and humor.
Sure, the Stones did edgier work, but this one is just plain fun to listen to and never seems to wear out its welcome on my turntable.
Five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Underappreciated, Underrated and Pure Stones.......2006-12-28

Okay, there are a couple fillers, all found on side two: Luxury is a half-serious reggae sendup that really, really sucks; If You Really Want to Be My Friend, an overlong, dull ballad; Dance Little Sister is too repetitive for me, and Short and Curlies is a filler, a failed attempt to recapture the smutty brilliance of songs like Brown Sugar and Let It Bleed. But hey, this is a great album, all things considered, especially considering its predecessor was Goats Head Soup, arguably the Stones' worst ever; everybody's heard the title song, and it rocks; same for Ain't too Proud to Beg, a Tempts cover that's a radio staple; and If You Can't Rock Me, a live favorite. But there's more to this album than those: Till the Next Goodbye has got to be the most underrated Stones song EVER, a melancholy, slightly country-tinged ballad that really deserves more recognition than it gets - same for the whole album, actually. Time Waits for No One has one of my favorite guitar solos ever on it, I'd go out a limb and say it's Mick T's best ever, though there's some stiff competition (Sway, for instance). And Fingerprint File is pretty funky and paranoid, sort of proto-Talking Heads; and those lyrics, man... after Bushie's spying job on so-called "terrorists", they're still relevant today, no?
Okay, this ain't first-rate Stones. But if you've heard the classics, and want more (I couldn't blame you), go here.

This records opens with the super rocker "If You Can Rock Me" and in it Mick sings, "If you can't rock me, than somebody will." Oh yeah, he ain't looking for no wedding cake, the man just wants to rock and he does it on this record. This is Mick Taylor's final record with the Greatest Group on Earth and he really goes out in style. In fact both he and his future replacement, Ron Wood, both play on the title song. I just love "Till the Next Goodbye," a song that sends chills up my spine every time I hear it. I jump up and groove (can you still say that?) every time "Dance Little Sister," comes out of my speakers. "Time Waits for No One," is sort of my husband's theme song. He's a writer and this song just seems to get his fingers tap, tap, tapping on those keys. I am very lucky, because I've got a guy who can rock me, so I don't have to find anybody else. Thank God for that, because life is, or should be, only rock and roll, after all.

Great idea, Joshua Downham! His take on combining the best of this album and Goat's Head Soup was inspired. I'm going to add Black and Blue to the mix and create one fantastic album. Before boring you with my take on that concept, let me get to the album at hand.
First of all, I picked up the cd to replace my ancient album when the flashy re-packaging of the red/white/blue sleeve caught my eye. Sadly, there is nothing else noteworthy about it - no extra tracks or anything like that, so that was a bit of a downer. It's purely a pipe dream to think that we'll ever get more out of the Stones than they wish, and with the key to the vaults clenched tightly between Mick's fingers, it'll take the death of a significant member and the break-up of the band before we ever get the real hidden treasures still out there.
The songs aren't bad, but some songs have an unfinished quality to them and may very well have ended up as out-takes with a bit more time to consider their value. "If You Can't Rock Me" and "Time Waits For No One" (even though the solo goes on a bit too long for me) are the highlights. Some of the songs are earnest if nothing else and show some willingness to explore new areas; "Luxury" and "Fingerprint File," and I'm mixed on "If You Really Want To Be My Friend," which sounds like the Billy Preston audition tapes, (along with "Melody" from the album after this one) as well as "Till The Next Time We Say Goodbye." I don't care much for their cover of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." The Stones can do a lot of things, but I don't find much of value in their Motown/pop-ish r'n'b covers, even going back to their first few albums. The remaining numbers are tired sounding, including the title track, "Dance Little Sister," and "Short and Curlies."
Now, getting back to the super-album...I would take "Coming Down Again," "Winter," "Star Star," "Angie," "Heartbreaker," "If You Can't Rock Me," "Time Waits for No One," "Hey, Negrita," "Fool to Cry," "Memory Motel," and "Crazy Mama." These are my faves from the uneven trio of mid-late seventies recordings.

3 out of 5 stars Not What Could Have Been.......2006-04-22

There are some great songs on this album, but there are some very weak ones too. The problem with It's Only Rock 'n' Roll and its 1973 predecessor, Goats Head Soup, is that The Rolling Stones did not want to take their time in building a strong follow-up to Exile on Main Street (1972). If you love Some Girls, then you might like It's Only Rock 'n' Roll, which is kind of an earlier version of that album since it has that same overall sense of fun and also features a cover version of a Temptations song.

Had the song list been, say, "If You Can't Rock Me," "Heartbreaker," "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll," "Angie," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "100 Years Ago," "Hide Your Love," "Till the Next Goodbye," "Luxury," and "Winter," we might be reviewing one of The Rolling Stones' best albums. Instead, they preferred a rapid fire release of albums (4 consecutive records from 1971-1974) instead of making 1 great album. Like Goats Head Soup, what we have here is a mixed bag with a few redeeming songs included. Followed by the underrated Black and Blue in 1976.

4 out of 5 stars It Isnt Only Rock And Roll!.......2006-04-21

It's Only Rock And Roll isnt the best album The Rolling Stones ever recorded but it's still a very good rock and roll album. I mean its got the classic Stones line up of Jagger/Richards/Watts/Wyman/Taylor. The albums is packed full of classic Rolling Stones songs. There is no reggea crap on the album just good old fashioned bluesy influenced rock and roll! The guitar playing through out the album is top notch and probley this, It's Only Rock And Roll is the best guitar album The Rolling Stones created, which is sad because Mick Taylor, the virtoisic guitar player and arguably the best guitar player the Stones ever had left after this album.

The album opens opens with it's best song, 'If You Cant Rck Me' which to this day has been a concert staple for the band. A true classic in The Rolling Stones catalog. If You Cant Rock me is concedered one of The Rolling Stones' all time best songs! As we roll along we come into another Temptations cover by the boys, 'Aint To Proud To Beg' which is my all time favorite temptaions song, and The Rolling Stones version is pretty good but doesnt have the same soul and passion as the orignal, but still a good cover. Next is the title track and the big hit single off the album and one of the classic songs ever recorded. 'It's Only Rock And Roll is easily one of the better songs The Rolling Stones have ever recorded, with brilliant slide guitar by Mick Taylor, and Mick Jagger's vocal swagger over self whorshiping lyrics, it makes the ultamite rock song!
'Till The Next Goodbye' is a southern fried country flavored song that is somewhat repetitive but yet in someway still a good song. I'm not really sure what to say about the song you'll just have to hear it for yourself. 'Time Waits For No One' is one of the all time best songs ever recorded. This song features Mick Taylor's all time best guitar solo, any real guitar player can apreciate this song ever if they hated The Rolling Stones. It's dark and mysterious and a truly amazing song. Good old Keith Richards steps up to the plate and sings on the next track. Like all of the songs Keith sings lead on 'Luxury' is a great song full of rough vocals and great guitar playing. Keiths riff on this song is one of his all time best. Most people say that the next song is just filler but I have to disagree, 'Dance Little Sister' is one of the better songs on the album. It's a harder rocking song the If You Cant Rock Me and it has a very catchy hook, I think this is way better then Till The Next Goodbye, and most people say thats one of the best songs on the album. The guitar alone on this song puts it as one of the better tracks. 'If You Really Want To Be My Friend' is a slower ballad as only The Rolling Stones could do. Nice piano and backing vocals give this already beautiful song a great atmosphere. The next song is done in true Rolling Stones form, nice blues driven rock and roll with amzing guitar playing thrown in for accient. 'Short And Curlies' is a cool blues song that not many people like and I dont understand why, I absolutley love the song, it's one of my favorite songs on the album. The album comes to a close with 'Fingerprint File' which is the perfect song to close the album and really was a sign of things to come next in The Rolling Stones' carrear. It's kinda disco but not, it's kinda funk but not, which were two arears that The Stones were not afriad to explore on the albums that followed It's Only Rock And Roll.

So with only one minor blunder on this album I cant see why people give it such a bad rap. Like I have stated it's full of Rolling Stones classics and even the songs that are not classics are still great rock and roll songs, with the exception of their country attempt Till The Next Goodbye, Which is strange because usually when The Rolling Stones would make a country song it was usually good. So with all this in mind, the next time you are in a record store do yourself a favor and pick up this classic album by one of the all time greatest bands ever! After all it's only rock and roll!
