5 out of 5 stars Great Cover.......2007-06-29

Great cover and great cd. This would have to be the companion album to 'Leftoverture'. Trying to follow-up to that monster hit seemed impossible but Kansas delivered. Although at first listen, quite different and maybe a bit disappointing for Kansas fans at the time, this album just grew on you listen after listen. Totally different than 'Leftoverture', but still in the same vein as that recording this really put Kansas in a class all by themselves. Album covers in the day were how sometimes you purchased (no sound bytes in those days) and this one was great and the music inside was impeccable, but, so much so that Kansas would have a difficult time living up to these two albums for the rest of the their career. Great music then that is still very viable today and worth every listen.

5 out of 5 stars Kansas - The Band At The Top Of Their Game.......2007-06-20

In terms of album sales "Point Of Know Return" would be Kansas high water mark. The band had come to the attention of mainstream radio with their previous disc and America seemed ready to embrace what Kansas had to offer. The album spawned another huge classic rock staple "Dust In The Wind" that to a younger generation may be more associated with a car commercial. The title track "Point Of Know Return" was another huge single, and one of the few hits penned by Steve Walsh. "Closet Chronicles" also received a lot of AOR airplay. This album shows a band at the absolute top of their game as the band had become experts at combining progressive rock with more accessible styles to come up with this true winner of an album. Along with the above mentioned tracks everything else here is great, "Paradox", Walsh's killer little instrumental "The Spider", a tribute to Albert Einstein "He Knew", one of the heaviest songs they ever did, "Lightning's Hand", the almost funky "Sparks Of The Tempest" with it's duel lead vocals from Walsh and Steinhardt, "Nobody's Home", and the beautiful album closer "Hopelessly Human". This is all top notch stuff and shows off all of Kansas strengths. This one is essential Kansas.

5 out of 5 stars Kansas of Topeka!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-21

My first Kansas album ever. Although being a fan of the group old standards,it was time to discover.having worn out my "Best of" set.of course, this album has "Point of Know Return" & "Dust In The Wind".But,there are so many other greats,I have discovered.Starting of with,"Paradox"."Portrait","Lightning's Hand" & "Nobody's Home". The latter being one of my new faves of Kansas.See for yourself and buy this NOW!!!! If you like Kansas and that style of rock you will be super pleased.
All we are is just,Dust In The Wind!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A fresh perspective..........2007-02-08

This album was recorded before I was born so I am not offering a biased opinion of something that I hold sentimental value in. I have recently been going back into the catalouge of rock history and listening to a lot of early progressive rock.

Kansas - whenever I used to hear the band's name it made me think of country rock. Of course I was familiar with the songs 'Carry On Wayward Son' (from the previous album Leftoverture) and 'Dust In the Wind', but those songs were the only thing I knew about Kansas music.

For those who may not know - Kansas is a PROGRESSIVE ROCK band - not country rock (although hints of southern style rock are incorporated into the music at times). This music is much more similar to the likes of Yes and Genesis than it is with bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd or The Allman Brothers. Crazy keyboard instrumentals, ambient sound effects, and offbeat drumming and guitar rythyms are throughout this great album.

The highlight point of the album for me is the awesome guitar leads of 'Lightning's Hand' leading directly into the mellow acoustic ballad 'Dust in the Wind' and then picking up again on the funky jazz rock song 'Sparks of the Tempest' - the diversity of these three songs for me sums up this album and what Kansas is about. An amazing album that I wish I had heard in its entirety years ago.

RECOMMENDATION: For younger readers - If you enjoyed this album then you should also check out 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' by Genesis. I will be posting more reviews of older albums as time permits - see my profile for some recommendation lists and other stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Better with age..........2007-01-28

A lot of 70's rock that I used to like now sounds ridiculous to me, but Point of Know Return comes off better than ever. The sound quality on this CD is fantastic and Point of Know Return is the high point of Kansas' discography. The extra tracks were a little disappointing as the live version of Hopelessly Human is barely distinguishable from the album cut and the live recording of Lightning's Hand fails miserably to capture the power of the the real live performance of this song. Still, if you ever liked Kansas you won't be disappointed with this CD in your changer.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Kansas Album - You Never Forget Your First Time or Your First Love.......2006-09-03

Please pardon my moment of nostalgia but this is the first Rock and Roll album I ever heard and the first album (vinyl) I ever bought. It still rates among my all-time favorites. I remember the time, it was 1977 and I had heard all the pop/disco [...] on the school bus. Then my friend turned me on to Kansas and that was the very beginning. He played "Point of No Return" and it was amazing; the lyrics were like real poetry and the melodies varied from the soft "Dust In the Wind," to the brazen, "Lightning's Hand," to the enigmatic, "Portrait." It even had cool graphics on the cover and Rock-n-Roll violin!! How can you beat that??!! My favorite songs are "Point of No Return," "Portrait," and the sad, "Nobody's Home;" but really I do not think there is a bad one in the bunch. I highly recommend this album; a great album which I still love after almost 30 years. It is a true masterpiece of 70's rock and I think I am going to play it right now. (The CD that is - I'm pretty sure the vinyl is in a bar in South Korea somewhere but that is a different bit of nostalgia.)

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy the remaster, but buy this first issue if you want great sound quality.......2006-01-24

I've already done a review under the entry of the new remastered POINT OF KNOW RETURN, but would like to encourage people interested in buying this cd to buy it under this entry of the one that was released in about 1984 because the remastered one with bonus tracks is a terrible remaster, if you have come to know the vinyl or this first issue. Like was said by a previous reviewer, Jeff Glixman has remastered the new one and made it sound compressed, without much of a dynamic range like it was in the previous issue. If you are new to this recording you may not think the remaster is too bad, but if you know it like the back of your hand like me, you know that somethings wrong with this remaster. So basically I'm saying, buy under this entry here without bonus tracks and you will be getting a very good quality recording. I think right now under this entry a used copy is something like $2.99. Enjoy this progressive rock masterpiece!!!

5 out of 5 stars Kansas' commercial - but not artistic - peak.......2005-02-28

Along with "Leftoverture", this is the non-compilation Kansas album most casual fans are most likely to own, due in no small part to the huge hits that the title track and "Dust In The Wind" became. I still hear "Dust In The Wind" on adult-contemporary easy-listening radio!

There are some other very good tracks on here - in fact, there's really not a weak track on the album. The instrumentation (as always) is up to Kansas' virtuoso standards and the arrangements on songs like "Closet Chronicles" and "Hopelessly Human" are reminiscent of "Song For America".

If I have one quibble, it's not as guitar-oriented as either of the studio albums that preceded ("Leftoverture") or followed ("Monolith") it. However, there's some nice, grindy, out-of-phase Stratocaster chording (is it Kerry Livgren or Richard Williams?) on "Sparks Of The Tempest" and Robby Steinhardt is his usual manic self on "Lightning's Hand".

They never were this big again sales-wise, even though they released quite a bit of high-quality (and heavier) music for many years after this, right through the line-up changes of the '80s and '90s until today.

An essential purchase by this band which is among the greatest this country has ever produced.

5 out of 5 stars get down to the facts.......2002-11-28

I love this CD in my own opinion it is every bit as good as Leftoverture and is an epic statement of what progressive rock
is all about. Its starts with Point of know return (a catchy hit single) onto the very progressive Paradox then to The spider (a tangely complex short instrumental. He knew comes next (a heavy blues orientated rocker)Closet Chronicles follows (perhaps my favourite ever Kansas song. Lightnings hand is a fun heavy rockin tune and Dust in the wind is perhaps Kansas`s bigest hit single to date Sparks of the tempest is another regarded classic Kansas song and onto, Nobody`s home (its so magical and beautiful) The CD winds up with Hoplessly human and its a progressive classic. I highly recomend this CD for anyone who wants to get down to the facts of what Kansas is all about.

2 out of 5 stars No return indeed.......2002-09-11

Altough all the musicians are really gifted, the sound here is so thin, polished, outdates, that I think these great songs deserved a "re-recorded" album.
I had heard great thing about these albums and, before buying it, all I had from Kansas was a live compilation from 1986 (King Biscuit Flower Hour), that I bought due to Steve Morse being in the band at that time, not for Kansas! The sound there is much more heavy and crispy and tight than the original versions (maybe it's just the difference from 1977 to 1986).

So, I surely am dissapointed with POINT OF KNOW RETURN (and what a silly joke this title!)
