One might assume the first album Neil Young put out upon his return to Reprise Records in 1988 after a misbegotten stint with Geffen would signal a comeback for the temporarily misplaced singer-songwriter. Actually, This Note's for You's successor, 1989's Freedom, is Young's late-'80s hallmark release. This one's the last in a series of titles from Young in the most capricious phase of a fickle career. Here he's on an Albert Collins kick, tackling blues-based tunes backed by his short-lived, horn-powered Blue Notes. While the anti-endorsement title track kicked up some dust at the time, the 10-song collection is weighed down by undistinguished, one-note workouts like "Ten Men Working," "Married Man," and "Sunny Inside" (the titles pretty much sum up the songs). Thankfully, Young returned to his own shade of blue after this curious bar-band one-off. --Steven Stolder --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars Better than you may have heard.......2005-05-14

Neil Young's foray into the blues is a solid effort. Thanks to the Blue Notes, the musicianship is excellent blues playing, and not some rock n' rollers weak attempt to play the blues. This is a vastly unerrated CD, particularly by those who want to hear loud rockin' Neil or the country "Harvest" Neil forever and ever. Here Neil takes us back to the root of both types of music and shows us a real good time doing it. If you like the blues in any form don't miss this one. It has some great musical moments. Now, if only Amazon would show a little respect and list all the songs on this CD....

3 out of 5 stars Play some blues, Neil.......2005-01-07

Neil Young experiments with bluesy R&B sounds a la the Stax Horns on this one. Horn charts are key components to each track but the results vary.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The title track's jab at corporate sponsorship and involvement in the music industry showcases guitarwork that's slinky and strutting. As an afterthought, Neil tosses off the best lyric in the tune by noting "I've got the real thing...", appropriating Coke's old slogan for the fadeout. "Coupe de Ville" is Neil's elegy to a failed relationship. The titular car is one of the possessions Neil still has but "if I can't have you, I don't want nothing else." A smoky jazzy sax accompaniment creates the mood along with a guitar part that sounds almost ukelele-ish at times (it works..really...) "Life in the City" turns Young's outrage to the plight of the homeless and points lyrical knives at neighbours who turn a blind eye to people sleeping on the sidewalks and families living on the freeways("Don't that trouble you, brother..don't that trouble you, pal..don't that trouble you, sister") It's punched up by horn blasts a la the JB's. The only disappointment might be the wailing trumpet at the song's close which fades out before it really cuts loose. Then again, better to leave us wanting more than to overstay your welcome. "A Married Man" trods the same path as Hall and Oates "Family Man"..the tempted hubby trying to tow the line. He tells the would be mistress that he "ain't got time to party..ain't got time for you no more..". "Sunny Inside" is a fairly bland paean to his love interest, but the track is really nice, sounding like a long lost Sam and Dave tune. The understated vocal for "Can't Believe Your Lyin' " is the closest to true blues expression. Unemployment is viewed here as a byproduct of love's failings...he loses his job because all he can think about is her infidelity. All-out blues wailer "Hey Hey" features a muted trumpet and tremeloed guitar competing with a sprightly brass part. Neil hypes his woman as the genuine article compared to the ones he "don't want around.."

LOWS:
"Ten Men Workin'" is very, well, WORKMANLIKE...the lyrics are the cliche about how "we're working hard to rock ya", sinking the song despite a pretty decent horn arrangement. "Twilight" never really picks up any steam, one of the album's duds...all mood and atmosphere, but no real fire. It's OK..but Neil's capable of much better. "One Thing" suffers the same fate.

BOTTOM LINE:
It's far from Neil's worst and has some great stuff on it, but it's not the highmark of his oeuvre either. There are just enough low points to keep me from giving it an unqualified 4 stars.

3 1/2 stars

5 out of 5 stars A thankful comeback after the debacles of the 80s.......2003-07-29

After the disastrous years with Geffen, during which only "Trans" stands out as a halfway decent album and "Landing on Water" is arguably his worst effort for anyone, Young returned to Reprise, the label of all his past glories, and while this album may not be as good as "Rust Never Sleeps" or "Tonight's the Night," it is manna from heaven when compared to his four previous albums. It is a genre album, to be sure, and caps the decade when he went from country to hard rock to electronic to rockabilly to synth rock to country and finally to swing before returning to "old Neil" form with "Freedom." But "This Note's For You" stands apart from the rest of the genre stuff, like "Hawks and Doves" and "Re-Ac-Tor" did, because of the thankful quality of the songwriting (except for a few tracks) and the overall consistency of the effort. Also, the songs don't ALL SOUND THE SAME (ahem, "Landing on Water," ahem). He shifts quite nicely between upbeat, get-your-feet-a-tappin' swing to slow and moody blues. The album may not make most fan's top five lists, but this, combined with the next year's "Freedom," catapulted Young from the disastrous 1980s back into the glory of his earlier days, at a time when all but his most devoted fans had deserted him.

5 out of 5 stars One of Neil Young's best.......2003-06-01

This Note's For You is one of Neil Young's best albums even if it didn't sell. This is the last of Young's experimental albums before he went back to his formula of making either largely acoustic albums or noisier but still very good albums with Crazy Horse. This is great rhythm and blues with an outstanding horn section. The title track is the best known track and it's Neil at his best as he attacks corporate sponsorship while the horn section responds after each line. The rhythm section of Rick (the bass player) Rosas and Chad Cromwell lay down a killer groove throughout the album. Other great R&B tracks include "Ten Men Workin'", "Life In The City", "Sunny Inside", and "Hey, Hey." But for all the great R&B, it's the moodier tracks that are the strongest. "Coupe De Ville", "Can't Believe Your Lyin'" and "One Thing" are very strong with "Coupe De Ville" being one of the best tracks Neil has ever recorded. Albums after this like Freedom and Harvest Moon would bring him back in the spotlight but This Note's For You is more consistent than both of them.

3 out of 5 stars Neil's blues are solid but not truly moving.......2002-12-06

This disc is an interesting aside from Neil Young -- who has recorded quite a few interesting asides amid all his great work! On this one, Neil does the blues, but I would have preferred him to strip them down and make them haunting -- sort of a blues version of "Harvest," perhaps, with more acoustic layers. Instead, this is pretty slick stuff, though "Ten Men Workin' " grooves along pretty well. If you really want to hear Neil Young's blues album, that's easy: Just buy "Tonight's the Night." As he once said of one of his songs, that album is out of pitch but still in tune, as Young wears his pain on his sleeve following the death of original Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten -- and a roadie, I think, named Bruce Berry, if memory serves. Feel free to correct me on the name, but if you knock the album itself, them's fightin' words.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars The best ever version.......2002-06-07

The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13

My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09

For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

5 out of 5 stars AMERICAN SONG RECITAL.......2000-02-17

    AMERICAN SONG RECITAL

Channel Classics Records has taken a first-rate initiative in giving winners of important international music competitions the opportunity to record a CD in the "Winning Artists Series." This CD, with fairly unknown American songs, is part of the above series. Other than a piece by Hundley, the remaining 22 songs are based on texts by American writers.

Richard Hundley's songs are beautiful and his compositions true to the texts on which they are based. All the emotions found in the texts are expanded in the compositions to ensure that the story comes through clearly and is not lost in the music. Lori Laitman was specifically asked by Lauren Wagner to compose a song. She chose a text by Sara Teasdale and the CD is worth owning for this song alone: magnificent! Another "plus" to this production is that the source and full text of the songs are in the CD book.

In addition to songs, a number of piano solos have been recorded. Those of Leonard Bernstein are not very well known, but very much worth listening to. He composed these works for friends, relatives and colleagues. They are concise, very complete compositions.

The fact that Lauren Wagner won four important prizes in 1991 is also not surprising. This singer possesses incredible timbre, has a beautiful, controlled voice and sings with incredible ease. Her music is truly a pleasure to hear. Her accompanist Fred Weldy matches her level of skill easily. This CD is definitely a worthwhile addition to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

A slew of indie artists band together on this uneven but ultimately winning two-disc tribute to Neil Young. Arranged from Young's earliest tracks onward (the album opens with the Dutch group Treble Spankers covering a surf instrumental Young recorded in 1963 with the Squires), This Note is elevated throughout by a palpable passion. Artists with underground cachet (Lee Ranaldo, the Walkabouts, the Bevis Frond) and ephemeral outfits alike chronicle Young's career from its very beginning up through 1994's "Piece of Crap." Strikingly, the '90s alt rockers who dominate here explore lesser-known tracks along the likes of "The Emperor of Wyoming," "Winterlong," and "Campaigner," as well as Young signature tunes "Tonight's the Night," "After the Gold Rush," and "Hey, Hey, My, My." Consider This Note a suitable complement to the relatively more star-studded alt Young salute The Bridge. --Steven Stolder

3 out of 5 stars Some Worthy Neil Covers, And Plenty Of Forgettable Ones Too.......1999-06-15

Pop Kulcher Review: The tribute albums which have been cropping up like smallpox since the mid-'80's have been a mixed blessing. Sure, it's nice to hear other bands interpret music from your favorite artists, but many of these consist largely of lame unsigned bands, and the covers are usually either unimaginatively loyal to the original, or so over-the-top in their efforts to reinterpret the original as to be unrecognizable. One of the better discs in the genre (and one of the first) was 1989's The Bridge, a tribute to Neil Young. Now, a decade later, comes a second Neil Young tribute. It's a mixed bag, but, given it's relatively low price for a 2-cd set, undeniably worth it for Neil fans.

Unlike The Bridge, which had some heavy-hitters of the alternative rock scene (Sonic Youth, Pixies, Soul Asylum, Nick Cave, Dinosaur Jr.), This Note has very few recognizable names. There are a few members of the mid-80's Paisley Underground (Steve Wynn of Dream Syndicate, Steven Roback of Rain Parade); other stand-outs include Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Bevis Frond, Richard Lloyd of Television, and alt.country act (and Long Ryders spin-off) the Coal Porters. Because this collection was put together by Neil's Dutch fanclub, there are also a lot of unknown Dutch bands (who, surprisingly, do a pretty good job with the material). Of the two discs, the first is far better -- the songs are arranged chronologically, so the second disc is weighed down by Young's substantially weaker 80's & 90's material. Most of the stand-outs lean primarily towards a folky, alt.country/rootsy feel. Nothing terribly innovative or interesting, but the songs themselves are wonderful, so even the modest, unpretentious cover versions sound quite nice. The second disc offers some looser takes on the Young catalog, but most of the experimentation fares poorly -- certainly nothing which holds up to the reinterpretations of Young's work on The Bridge. All in all, some great music which could easily be culled down to a single, throroughly enjoyable disc or tape.

4 out of 5 stars Scorching versions of some Neil classics!!!.......1999-05-28

I must admit I bought this CD with some trepidation having been a Neilophile for over 30 years but the majority of these artists do more than justice to the man's songs and some even up the ante a fair degree. I've only heard of a handful of these guys (notably Steve Wynn, Chris Cacavas, Van Christian, & Rich Hopkins & Lumanarios) but the musicianship is consistently excellent. This is a great compilation for folks just getting introduced to Neil's music and a real hoot for old fans. Don't know whether he's had a chance to give it a listen but I think The Old Man would be pleased. Far superior to the Bridge tribute released about six years ago. Give it a listen!

4 out of 5 stars This cd traces alternative music back to one of its creators.......1999-05-14

Buy this CD if you a)Love Neil Young. b)Love the earliest of alternative/grunge music. c)Refuse to follow the herds of sheepish FM listeners into the path of "overhyped hit oblivion". Friends, even the pitifully overplayed "Heart of Gold" JAMS on this CD. This is a fine collection which loses the 5TH star only because of some CLASSIC OBSCURE Neil was left off. If people listen to this classic more than once, they will search the archives for more Neil Young that will never be found on any FM station. All of the artists, except one or two, do great interpetations of Youngs work. Try it you'll like it! Remember that some of these gems were written over 33 years ago-mindblowing music for the adventurous. Finally, proceeds go to Youngs' Bridge School, a notable cause, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Too beautiful for words.......2004-05-25

If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.

    5 out of 5 stars Guitar History.......2004-02-15

Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

5 out of 5 stars Best deal there is!.......2002-05-06

5 out of 5 stars Julian Bream, The Genius.......1999-01-09

Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
