If Bob Dylan had been a garage rocker instead of a poet, there may not have been room for Tom Petty on the rock landscape. But things turned out great: Petty burst on the scene as it was splitting into two camps (rock and punk) and somehow managed to please both with his whiny sneer and taut, jangly guitars. (Dylan went on to be...Dylan.) Frantic tunes like "Rockin' Around (With You)" and "Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll" (predating the Jags a few years later) helped land the band--temporarily--in the punk and new-wave camp, although choppy guitars and nervous energy were as much a part of the band's style as was a more traditional guitar sound. The now-classic "American Girl" was a brazen nod to the Byrds, and Stones-ish rock sentiments fueled the bar-band leanings of "Hometown Blues" and the sexy "Breakdown." He's sold millions of albums, filled arenas, and hobnobbed with George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison, but Tom Petty's driving heartland rock has often been taken for granted by the same critics who hail John Mellencamp as a genius. Greatest Hits is an airtight argument for Petty's own greatness. Starting with "American Girl," the rollicking, Byrds-inspired single from Petty's first album in 1976, this compilation presents a chronological overview of the guitarist-vocalist's career with and without the Heartbreakers, also chronically underrated as one of today's best bands. Every one of the 16 older tracks is a well-crafted gem, full of solid guitar hooks ("Here Comes My Girl"), arresting images ("Don't Come Around Here No More") and simple but poetic lyrics ("The Waiting").

Petty isn't an innovator; he's a talented craftsman with impeccable taste and a strong sense of rock history, internalizing influences ranging from the Beatles' psychedelic masterpiece, Revolver, to the best of '70s punk. (It's interesting to remember that early efforts such as "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That" first won Petty attention as a New Wave artist). With his Dylanesque vocals and chiming 12-string guitars, Petty is more often linked these days with the sounds of the '60s. But recent tunes such as "Learning to Fly" and "Into the Great Wide Open" are as smart, relevant and (dare I say) alternative as anything in MTV's Buzz Bin. --Jim DeRogatis

One of America's best bands..........2007-07-13

Firstly, I suppose I am kicking myself for not being aware of the 2000 Anthology by this band...and that Anthology addresses some of the criticisms I have of this compilation.

One of my criticisms is that this compilation does NOT have Tom Petty's duet with girlfriend of the time, Stevie Nicks, of Fleetwood Mac fame ["Stop dragging my heart around"]. Just btb-I do remember hearing in a short radio series about New Zealand super-group Split Enz [whom I consider to be in the same league as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers] that when the two groups toured together at one time, Tom Petty was a really big pain to them.

This is a band that continually gets lots of their songs played on commercial FM radio over here in Australia...songs like: Refugee; I won't back down; Runnin' down a dream; Free fallin', and Don't come around here no more.

For me, TP&THB is one of those good bands which don't quite have the large catalogue of good songs of the supergroups like The Beatles or AC/DC or Midnight Oil etc, but they have more good songs than you might give them credit for.

E.g. one of my fave songs of theirs is "Don't come around here no more". It features a Beatle-esque or George Harrison-ish Indian guitar or sitar opening. If you get the chance, you should have a look at the memorable video for this terrific song-it heavily references the book by Lewis Carrol "Alice in Wonderland". The video trickery is wonderful to watch.

I'll write down some of the notes I made for this compilation when I was listening to it:

"Anything that's rock'n'roll" reminded me of the guitar sound of, I think, Australia's The Ted Mulry Gang [David Hasselhoff murdered a terrific song of theirs called "Jump in in my car"...maybe this is the song that the TP&THB song reminds me of in some ways. Tom Petty also seems to have Elvis Costello style vocals in this song. I should point out that it looks like MY version of this compilation has an EXTRA song-the one above-I THINK that my version may an earlier version of this compilation or perhaps a later one, or perhaps the version released here in Australia.

"Listen to her heart"-the guitar intro to this song reminds me of the guitar work for the song "Needles and pins".

"I need to know"-here Petty has Bob Dylan-esque vocals. The same goes for "Refugee". Just by the by, I've never heard a bad song with "Refugee" in the title! Check out the Australian band Cold Chisel's song with this this word in the title. Petty's song has a distinctive keyboard sound to it.

"The waiting"-another good song I like from this band. It has a "Turn, turn, turn" style guitar intro.

"You got lucky"-the synthesiser introduction to this song reminded me of The Police's own synth sound for their song "Spirits in the material world". I reviewed The Police's new compilation today at this site.

"I won't back down"-this song has the feel of an E.L.O. song-and seeing as E.L.O's lead singer Jeff Lynne has production credits for this Petty compilation, it is perhaps Lynne's influence which comes out strongly on this song.

"Running down a dream"-another song that you will hear on Australian commercial FM radio. I made a note that this song features an AC/DC style menacing guitar sound.

"Free falling"-another one of my favourite TP songs. It has nice backing singing and some nice guitar work.

"Mary Jane's last dance"-features harmonica, a Neil Young sound to it and a guitar intro reminiscent, I think, of Young's song "Heart of gold".

Lastly, there is a decent cover of the 60's political song "Something in the air".

Overall, this is an album of accomplished pop/rock which is standing the test of time, judging by the fact that this artist is such an FM staple in Australia.

Have the cd in our car so can listen to it often! Love it! Has all the good songs on it, any Tom Petty fan should have this one! My favourite cd rite now!

Pettyness Which Plays So Rough................2007-05-19

People. Your supercillous main man Seer is back. And don't be a wise acre and say I'm more cill-y then super. I can deal fine with the barbs. It's the jibes I have a hard time with. Then again, true reflection is an arduous task- not for the meek or faint of heart. And you may not read this review-especially if you have a pacemaker. If you think your Metamorpho has money to pay lawsuits - you are sourly mistaken. There are spirits of the dark (bill collectors) after me as we squawk. But, fortunately for you, I reserve the right to purchase more music for your benefit and live in virtual squalor. Who cares if I have to seek shelter in an abandoned high rise apartment building? You benefit- so stop that whining!
You all know by now how music works. It seeps into your mind. Then, at a later predestined time, you just have to revisit it. It gets into your blood, or synapses, or, into your need to escape and just have fun. And, music should be a pure joy for you as well as something to delve below the surface for. Sometimes we have to do some work too, but if we didn't, it wouldn't be as rich, or rewarding. This is what the whole thing is about. And I've found that I'm allegic to clown wigs. I'm sure the tabloids will have a field day with that.
This album is a testimony for the faithless, an alimony for the penny-less, a contrition for the heartless, and just plain shock treatment for the synapse-less. And, you heard all that first right here from your informative Metamorpho.
I listened to this loud and it shakes and kicks the fibers of your soul into some outer-metaphysical place beyond human comprehension. It is rock, for sure, but such a damn near perfect addicting form of it that it's hard to explain- or comprehend, for that matter. Most of the subject matter centers around relationships - which are nothing new in the rock arena. But, it's what Petty and his fine band of musicians have done with it. They've molded it into generous hooks and alluring melodies that extend beyond the reach of the beautiful and cutesy. This is rough and hard rockin', make no mistake. Petty has never sounded more impassioned than on most of these songs. Listen to his vocals on "The Waiting". Pleading and insistent. But, with his Dylanesque and McGuinnesque influences, he's molded and found his own, unique voice. And swagger. Listen to his warning on "You Got Lucky" and his urgent, gutteral plea on "Refugee". Petty is giving us buckets of his emotions into these songs. The greatness lies in him, and a superbly competent band that knows exactly what to do - time and time again. They are true treasures of rock. It gets my aged Seer's blood flowing once again. Something I haven't felt since the dragon got loose in my castle. It was a good thing I had garlic at my disposal.
Most of these songs are so well written that it makes your favorite Seer's Seer hat do somersaults. It is so incredulous. Everything has a place and a place for everything. No grandstanding here. The band flows - effortlessly - giving us true gems at every turn.
I must admit, I have a certain affection for "Don't Come Around Here No More". The same haberdasher made my Seer's hat as well. But I am not mad.Even if my guides debate that point.
So, the end of this petty tale is that this is certainly a very fine representation of a true, American rocker. Succinct,sonorous,satisfying. Tom Petty has rocked since this offering, but, I feel, never as hard and spectacular as he does here. But he is mega in rock music. Give a listen - then send accolades to me in care of my scottish castle.

Good one-disc compilation.......2007-03-25

This is the best single-disc compilation of Tom Petty that you can find. It's got all of the hits and no filler. Of course, there are more comprehensive compilations out there, but this does well for a single disc. It is definately a very good overview of Tom Petty and the great artist he is. The sound is also very good. I would definately recommend it.

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. Please, don't give the Vendors your cash for This the: "Deluxe" Version. Many big Chain Merchants STILL have this Deluxe Version available for Purchase in their stores...{HINT} Think, B B for the Store name. The Deluxe Edition is still out there and it's cheaper than what they want you to Pay for it here....BUYER, SHOP AROUND, IT'S STILL IN STORES !!!

Roy, George, & Bob, YEAH, but WHY Petty & Lynne???.......2007-07-15

Yes, I was very, very happy with this CD when it came out in 1988 (for...several reasons, one being mainly acoustic rhythm guitar predominated), and to this day, "Tweeter & The Monkey Man" is played with regularity on my stereo. "Handle With Care" beats most anything that George did (by himself, anyway), and Roy Orbison's "Not Alone Anymore" ranks right up there with "Sweet Dream Baby" or "Pretty Woman." But...I mean, that's IT - I detest "ELO," and Tom Petty makes me wish he'd taken up needlepoint or something (doesn't he EVER wash the sleep residue out of his mouth? He sings here with the very same mono-tone he has inflicted on us ever since "Breakdown"). So, no, I can't justify a "Wilbury III," or (Heaven help us!) a "Wilbury video." It's just too damned disrespectful of Roy and now George. But hey, "that & a dime," etc, & if you've already decided you're gonna purchase this, most Amazon "reviews" won't change your mind. Coupla hints, tho: Ringo "Newest AllStarrs" (the 2001 tour) DVD with Roger Hodgson, Ian Hunter, & Greg Lake is a MONSTER; Or check closely to see if there's anything by Paul, circa the "Venus & Mars" era.

Quintesential Must Have.......2007-07-13

One of the greatest compilations of influential musicians ever. No egos involved in the making of this music nor was there an infighting amongst the artist. Dylan, Petty, Orbison, Lynn and of course George Harrison all bring their life experiences and musical talent to two unbelievable albums that will leave you asking why that more musicians can't create artistic masterpieces like this. The first album has some of the best compositions from all the journeymen while the second seems to be a tribute to Roy Orbison while maintaining teh artistry of the first. Haunting lyrics, amazing melodies and unbelievable harmonies appear at some of the most unexpected places in all the songs. Nobody's Child which was recorded as an awareness song for the people of the world for all the orphans is one of the hidden gems on these albums as well as the remake of Runaway which seems to be a tribute to Roy Orbisons origins in Rock and Roll history. If you are a music lover or collector you need this set in your collection and if you are just getting started in collecting music then this set is a must have.

Finally, the Traveling Wilburys!.......2007-07-12

I have been searching used music stores everywhere for the Traveling Wilburys, and with no success. So when I saw the deluxe edition being released I was ecstatic. What a group! This is my favorite music buy all year.

The most striking thing about this two-disc overview of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers is the powerful case it makes for its creators as the most consistent band of not only their era, but of all time. Think of another rocker who can claim to have created a quarter-century of recordings that, when ranked on a 10-point scale, never dip below a solid 7? Indeed, while disc 1 reflects a marginally more aggressive mindset than disc 2, it wouldn't be difficult to imagine the discs flip-flopped; maturity has yet to induce lethargy for Petty and the boys. Occupying the solid middle ground between the 18-track Greatest Hits and the six-disc Playback box, Anthology serves up 34 selections, nearly every one an FM staple. From 1976's "Breakdown" through the collection's only new offering, 2000's "Surrender," this retrospective never flags. But how could it? --Steven Stolder

Great for "Casual Fans".......2007-06-30

I've been listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ever since they hit the radio airwaves back in the late seventies. I remember going to neighboorhood party's during the summer of 1978 (I was in Junior High) and Refugee was in the Top 40, gettin' blasted through the speakers.

Subsequently, over the years, I have purchased every one of Tom's and the Boy's cd's. I still consider myself just a casual fan. I simply like the hits off each cd, with a few extras thrown in by personal taste. Anyway, the majority of these discs are from the early '90's. Not the best sound quality. And, it takes some time and effort to load each disc in my itunes and pick just the songs that I want. The solution?

Buy this 2-disc Anthology. It's a great price. It's sounds good. And all your favorite Petty tunes are right there, conveniently in one place, uh...or two. I dropped them into my iPod, and haven't looked back since.

Now all I have to do is get The Last DJ and The Highway Companion, and I'm done.

Brings Tears To Your Eyes.......2007-06-08

Since Tom Petty is an icon of my generation, I could not help but enjoy/love this CD. All of his popular songs and even the not so popular songs make this CD an excellent choice for those rockers who want to turn it down a notch but have the great guitar licks coming at you with precision.

This album is an essential for any Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fan. Normally I try to stay away from albums that are compiled with songs that are considered to be the best of, but this album is definitely an exception. It's not the best of, it's Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers at their best. Trust me, this is an excellent addition to any music lovers collection.

Outstanding Petty anthology covering the MCA years.......2007-02-27

THE BAND: Tom Petty (vocals, guitar, keyboards, harmonica), Mike Campbell (lead guitar), Benmont Tench (keyboards), Howie Epstein (bass), Ron Blair (bass), Stan Lynch (drums & percussion). Guest appearances include, George Harrison, Stevie Nicks, Jeff Lynne.

THE DISCS: (2000) 34 tracks on two discs clocking in at approximately 124 minutes (disc-1 with 57:37 minutes, and disc-2 with 66:16). Included with the discs is a 10-page booklet containing song titles/credits, band photos, a 1-page intro from Cameron Crowe, what songs came from which albums and the year released. This compilation follows Petty from his debut in 1976 through this 2000 "Anthology". Digitally remastered sound. Label - UTV Records / MCA.

COMMENTS: Every music listener needs some Tom Petty in his/her collection. "Damn The Torpedoes" (1979) and "Full Moon Fever" (1989) are essential studio recordings of his. Other albums like his self titled debut, "Long After Dark", "Southern Accents" and "Into The Great Wide Open" are great albums, but I wouldn't classify them as essential Petty necessarily. Petty's "Greatest Hits" (1993) is still a fine representation on one disc, but with this more recent 2-disc "Anthology", the '93 disc is now obsolete. 17 of the 18 songs from his "Greatest Hits" album are here, minus the skippable last track "Something In The Air". THE GOOD: All the staples are here - "Breakdown", "American Girl", "I Need To Know", "Refugee", "Here Comes My Girl", "Don't Do Me Like That", "Even The Losers", "You Got Lucky", "Don't Come Around Here No More", "Free Fallin'", "I Won't Back Down", "Runnin' Down A Dream", "Learning To Fly", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", etc. The minor successes absent from his '93 "Greatest Hits" are here - "Change Of Heart", "A Woman In Love (It's Not Me)", "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", "So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star", "Jammin' Me", "Love Is A Long Road", and "Yer So Bad". There are several deep album cuts (i.e. "Hometown Blues", "The Wild One, Forever", "Too Much Ain't Enough", etc) that are nice inclusions. Chronological order is a bonus here - showcasing Petty's slight changes over the decades. Song selection is top notch. The remastered sound is crisp. THE NOT SO GOOD: Only two things stick out here. First and foremost, there are no tracks from his "Wildflowers" (1994) or "Echos" (1999) albums... most likely due to these 2 albums being on the 'Warner Bros' label (and everything prior on MCA's label). This is a shame because I really feel the songs "You Wreck Me", "Cabin Down Below" and "It's Good To Be King" deserve to be on "Anthology". Perhaps this should've been titled "Anthology - Through The MCA Years". In the same vein, there are no selections from Petty's soundtrack to the movie "She's The One" (1996). Many of Petty's early songs are short (out of the first 8 tracks, the longest song is three-and-a-half minutes), and with that being said why not throw a few more songs on both discs and utilize the free space (22 unused minutes alone on disc-1). OVERALL: A ton of music and all the major hits (despite the 2 omitted albums from Warner Bros). To date, this is the best Tom Petty compilation... period (5 stars).

Great Collection!.......2007-02-12

This is a great collection that spans Mr. Petty's career so far. There is not a bad song here. I put it on and turned it up when it arrived at my house. I am familiar with most of the songs and happy to hear the ones I missed. I recommend head phones and a comfortable couch and give this a good listen. The waiting is the hardest part....

Four years after he took Elvis Costello's advice and bit the music/radio biz hands that have simultaneously fed and frustrated him for decades on the scabrous The Last DJ, Tom Petty returned to the studio with more personally introspective matters on his mind. Reuniting with producer/Wilbury sideman Jeff Lynne sans Heartbreakers for his third solo release proper, the veteran doesn't so much retool his trademark sound here as allow it the freedom to roam. The sonic landscape here is bluesier ("Saving Grace's opening shuffle, the haunting "Turn This Car Around") and more country-fried (the twangy energy of the blue collar lament "Big Weekend"), a return to familiar roots that produces subtly different results this time around. That sensibility now seasons songs as different as the stoned-elegant languor of "Night Driver" and the playful "Jack," where Petty and Lynn give a knowing nod and wink to the contemporary pop milieu. The stately, pop-perfect closer "Golden Rose" may lean on the Beatle-y side of their familiar sound, but it's a cliché the duo use both sparingly and shrewdly throughout, forging one of the veteran's most free-ranging and warmly satisfying efforts in a decade. I have ALL of Tom Petty's offerings on tape, CD and iTunes. Love his overall body of work. Quite a talented force in the American music business.

I bought this CD, hoping against hope that it would be akin to his fantastic CD "Wildflowers" of many years ago---every cut on "Wildflowers" grows on you. Not a dud in the bunch. One of my alltime faves!

"Highway Companion?" One song out of 12 could be construed as worthy to transfer to your iPod. In fact, this CD is proof-positive as to why iTunes and Apple's various iPods are such a runaway success: their biz model. Not all CDs cuts are winners. Too many dogs.

Jobs/Apple realized before everyone else that everyone has an inner DJ and very rarely does one like ALL the cuts on any CD. There are a few rarities out there: U2s "Actung Baby?" You want ALL the cuts. Same with many of Jackson Browne's offerings. Gotta have them all. Just like Petty's "Wildflowers CD"---all cuts are winners.

I spent $17 on "Highway Companion" and am sorry that I did. It heralded the last CD I'll ever buy. I'd be $16 ahead had I just downloaded the one tune I really liked. But I did not know and took a chance. It failed.

This mirrors the current status of the Music Business: much investment and little payback. Thanks to iTunes, MP3, iPods and other MP3 devices, the music consumer is no longer strung along to accept all the songs.
We can pick and choose, feeding our inner DJ.

Sounds so comfortable and familiar, that you almost miss the real master stroke...........2007-07-19

Sure, there are familiar Tom Petty themes and melodies on Highway Companion, but I can't help but get the same vibes as from Full Moon Fever and the first Travelling Wilbury's album. The songs Saving Grace and Big Weekend sound like Running Down a Dream and at least 4 of the tracks on the Wilbury's first. These are good things for fans of, what is now coined, traditional rock and roll.

HC has a rhythm and blues sound and just over half the tunes are medium to down-tempo or as another reviewer imparted -- melancholic. So, don't plan on playing this CD at any keggers (unless it is real late).

I agree with another reviewer noting that the songs could have been more fully fleshed-out had the rest of the Heartbreakers been involved, in particular, keyboardist Benmont Tench (see Don Henley's Boys of Summer and Sunset Grill). As it were, Tom, along with Jeff Lynne from ELO, and Mike Campbell (Heartbreakers lead guitarist), holed up in the studio to play and record HC. With these three playing all the instruments, along with the minimalist production by Lynne, Tom has achieved the simplicity that he wanted to tell these parables about the passage of time. However, the additional keyboards and more complex drum patterns that the Heartbreakers would have added may well have created a better record. But, not that much better, and maybe only different. The strength of this material with these particular musicians are a force to be reckoned with.

Some have an issue with Tom partnering with ex-Wilbury and ELO chief Jeff Lynne. Their contention is that Jeff over-produces, or turns into pop, Tom's rock and roll, heavy rhythm and blues sound. If Jeff has a bad influence on Tom, then what about the unchallenged success of the Travelling Wilburys catalog, Full Moon Fever, or one of the Heartbreakers best -- Into the Great Wide Open. All of these were produced by Jeff and forged this now 3-decade musical partnership. The song Learning to Fly, from Great Wide Open, has become to the 1990s what Boys of Summer was to the 1980s.

WHAT AND WHERE IS THE MASTER STROKE OF HIGHWAY COMPANION?
There is a unique sonic attribute to HC that took several listens to uncover, i.e., the sound of the electric/acoustic guitars. Between Tom, Jeff, and Mike, these guys have a combined 100 years of writing, playing, and recording guitar sounds. Whom better than this trio to reinvent and invigorate the sound of the recorded guitar. Jeff has been producing and engineering music since the 1970s. Take the HC tracks Jack, Square One, or This Old Town. Although they sound as comfortable as your favorite pair of shoes, listen deeper to discover the virtuoso guitar playing and the resultant unique textures and tones coming from your speakers or headphones. These sounds can only be created by mucho-experienced craftsman such as Petty, Lynne, and Campbell.

Let's hope Petty and company will get back into the studio to create more guitar-driven rock and roll pearls. There may not be that many more chances to experience the magic of collaborations like Highway Companion.

An amazing record a bit melancolic though but loved every song. Big Weekend is very Wilbury-like. I love all songs for different reasons, not one I would leave out. More more of it Tom !

ps for someone with a deep voice his singing is incredibly polyvalent and has been for years. It seems he can "colour" his voice with so many different shadows... and now at 57 again, it changed again from his other records

More great work from a master craftsman.......2007-04-12

Ok, so Tom Petty isn't exactly wandering into new unknown musical waters very often these days. But he is still churning out very solid material with memorable, well written songs and tasteful, sonically stimulating production that really pulls the listener in. Just like his fellow Traveling Wilbury Bob Dylan, he is still a master craftsman doing what he does best. "Saving Grace", "Flirting with Time", "Damaged by Love", and "Big Weekend", are my personal faves, all of which fit nicely in his vast catalog of great songs. Tom, please go on tour again!

As you listen to Wildflowers, Tom Petty's first new album in three years and his first ever for Warner Bros., you may be struck by a certain quality, new for Petty but nonetheless familiar. The predominance of the twangy rhythm guitar; the high-pitched, nasal singing; the irresistibly catchy pop hooks; and the melancholy lyrics straining for a spiritual significance just beyond their grasp--all these elements make Petty sound as if he were a Beatle imitating Bob Dylan. Then you may realize that Wildflowers resembles nothing so much as a George Harrison solo album. That's not such a bad thing; Harrison (Petty's old bandmate in the Traveling Wilburys) has a knack for giving moody spiritualism a pop tunefulness. It's just that Harrison on his own is a second-tier rock & roll figure whose best work is long behind him, and that's pretty much the case with Petty as well. Wildflowers truly is a wonderful album. The thing that makes the album so great is the fact that Tom Petty really gave each of the songs a personal message that just about ANY one can relate to. Every song has a meaning that's worth listening closely to.

Whether it's the rockers or the ballads or just the pretty songs, there's something here for everyone. Everybody knows Tom Petty is one of the most easily likeable musicians in the world of pop music, and this album further proves just how enjoyable his music is. He's good at what he does, and he continues to show the world his style with overwhelmingly positive results just about every time.

Kick back, turn the lights off, and just listen to a personal journey and probably the best album Tom Petty ever made.

Greatest albumn ever released.......2007-03-10

Every single song on here could be on a greatest hits record. It just shows all the ranges of Petty, from slow to folk to faster rock. Simply incredible, if you have any interest in Petty you must own this record.

Wake Up Time!.......2007-01-24

This album came out when I was a sophomore in high school way back in 1993-94, and I had a musical epiphany of sorts. At that time, I was aware of Tom Petty but this record broadsided me like a brickwall and suddenly I began to explore his remarkable musical legacy. More than a decade later, this album is still close to my heart and has guided me through various periods of my life. Simply put, this is a cd that absolutely no Tom Petty fan should be without. Some of TP's greatest tunes are on this cd-"It's Good to Be King" which has some of his most poignant lyrics: "I'll be king when dogs get wings, can I help it if I dream from time to time." Other classics include the title-track, a truly beautiful love song, the perennial live track "You Wreck Me", and also one of my personal favorites, "To Find a Friend": "And the days went by like paper in the wind, everything changed, and then changed again, it's hard to find a friend." I also had the rare leasure to hear Tom play "Crawling Back to You" in 2005, which suggests that it is one of his favorite tunes. The last track on the album, "Wake Up Time," an introspective piece featuring piano and strings, is a profound song that asks:

You hang out forever and still miss the dance
And if you get lucky, you might find someone
To help you get over the pain that will come
Yeah, you were so cool back in high school, what happened?"

I guess we're all still wondering what has happened, and where the time goes, and if we make the most of the opportunities life gives us. Some of the most haunting and touching lyrics ever written by Tom Petty or any other songwriter close out this album:

Ten years had passed since Petty's last solid outing (Damn the Torpedoes in 1979), and Full Moon Fever fully resuscitated the artist's career, which--some would say "arguably"--had been losing steam. With the album's four major hits and rave reviews from the critics (these things do not always go hand-in-hand), Petty must have breathed a sigh of relief. He left the Heartbreakers behind, hooked up with musician, writer, and producer Jeff Lynne, and rocked out with "Runnin' Down a Dream," got mellow and introspective on "Free Fallin'" and "A Face in the Crowd," and paid tribute (finally) to the Byrds with a cover of "Feel a Whole Lot Better." He perfected the sing-along guitar-pop song on "Yer So Bad" and had a wild time on "Zombie Zoo." Pure Petty perfection! --Lorry Fleming

Tom Petty's solo albums are somewhat hard to distinguish from his "and the Heartbreakers" efforts. Jeff Lynne's production is different, cleaner and a little glossier, I suppose. But the style is essentially the same, and Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Howie Epstein and Benmont Tench play on the album, too, along with Lynne and guest start George Harrison.

Tom Petty has written or co-written every song, most of them with Jeff Lynne, with the exception of one cover, a great rendition of the Byrds' "Feel A Whole Lot Better". And "Full Moon Fever" is filled with pleasant, radio-friendly roots rock, folkish mid-tempo shuffles, ballads and R&B.
The track list is remarkably strong, too; nothing here is bad, even if there are a handful of tracks which stand out: "Free Fallin'", "I Won't Back Down" and the garage rocker "Runnin' Down a Dream" were all hit singles, and they stand alongside the aforementioned Byrds cover and the wistful "A Face in the Crowd" as the most remarkable songs on "Full Moon Fever". But lesser-known songs like "Depending on You" and the wonderful, swinging roots rocker "The Apartment Song" are equally delightful.

This is probably my favourite Tom Petty and/or Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album, alongside "Damn the Torpedoes". It has dated a little bit since 1989 (man, I feel old!)...but not nearly as bad as many other 80s rock records. "Full Moon Fever" is certainly one of three or four must-have CDs if you're into Tom Petty.

I recently started to listen to Tom Petty's music and i have to say this record is fantastic. from the heartbreakers to bob dylan to george harrison to Jeff Lynne its all here and its an amazing creative piece of work.

This is one catchy album which saw Tom step away from the Heartbreakers brand of rock and roll and venture into a more pop orientated scene. Jeff Lynne co wrote tracks and produced this album, one of a string of his successes as a producer.

This album, is catchy from start to finish, some of the songs are below par but such as the musical spirit, lightheartedness and joy, they come across, each as catchy radio hits.

Free Fallin', I Won't Back Down and Running Down a Dream were solid hits from this release and are up there with his most popular songs especially for the 2nd generation of Petty fans. They are concert staples and are songs that gained him further respect as a songwriter and thrust him to the top, all over MTV, he was hip again and rode the wave of success well into the 90's.

The Apartment Song was a left over from the early to mid 80's and the rest of the songs were written with Jeff. Initially rejected by the record company, this album turned out to be his 2nd highest charting and one of his best selling albums that was nominated for album of the year at the Grammy's.

This album for me ranks in the middle of his catalogue, there are alot of better albums, including his most recent and his earlier works. Pop fans will love this for the songs they always heard on radio, it is a good introductory/early album to buy for new fans. This album is in need of a remaster.

Pretty good..........2006-11-05

Unlike most of the other reviewers, I didn't think this album was 100% gold. In fact, it seemed to me the album (side A) started out with the strongest material (the three big singles are all in the first 5 songs) and then it went downhill for me. Overall, side B was kind of bla for me, and sounded rather unfinished (notice the average song on side A is much longer than side B, and Mike Campbell's contributions are all on side A). There wasn't much guitar work, maybe owing to the fact that this was more a solo effort, and songs like "A Mind With a Heart of Its Own" and "Zombie Zoo" replace Mike Campbell's guitars with organs and excessive backing vocals. "Alright for Now" is a really short lullabye that never really goes anywhere, stays in the lull it begins with and has some pretty uninspired lyrics. "Depending on You" and "The Apartment Song" are the same for the entire song and has the same drums and guitars the whole way through and are very repetitive, along with "A Mind With a Heart of its Own."

Needless to say, the strong points of this album make it worth getting, but if you already have "Anthology" you have every really good song on this album. Personally, although I thought the follow-up "Into the Great Wide Open" did not have as many really strong tracks, it was more consistent overall and had the catchy riffs which would have made up for what is lacking here. Clearly he developed a new style on this record and an ability to not take himself so seriously, but I just thought side B left a lot to be desired and each song kind of ended where it started staying the same throughout with some very throwaway lyrics ("I'm all right. I just feel a little lonely tonight. I'm OK most of the time. I just feel a little lonely tonight").

Check out "Echo" and the soundtrack to "She's the One" for some of TP's most underrated work, this I would say is a tad overrated.

Outstanding Work From Petty - With the Help of Some Wilburys.......2006-10-12

As the music scene progressed in the 1980s, things began to change in the pop music landscape. The synth-pop sound that had dominated the 1980s was now being replaced by a more "natural" guitar-laden sound. This trend was promoted by such artists like John Mellencamp and John Fogerty who would enjoy commercial success as well as critical acclaim. Five musicians in the 1980s would also find themselves at the center of this movement on the music landscape. Jeff Lynne of ELO was working with George Harrison on his "Cloud Nine" album. At the same time Lynne was working with Roy Orbison.. The story goes that Lynne, Harrison, and Orbison all agreed to sing on Orbison's song. They needed a place to record, so they contacted Bob Dylan to use his studio. Meanwhile word is that George's guitar was with Tom Petty (who was also working with Lynne). The rest is history and a supergroup called "The Traveling Wilburys" was born. The Wilburys would enjoy enormous success. While some people felt that Lynne was the weak member of the Wilburys, he was the man who also brought them all together. As mentioned, Lynne was also working with Tom Petty at the time on a "solo project". That project would turn out to be his highly successful 1989 album, "Full Moon Fever". "Full Moon Fever" not only encapsulates the guitar-laden sound that had now taken over the landscape, but it also brings 3 of the 4 other Wilburys (the exception being Bob Dylan) into the fold.

The Traveling Wilburys would release two albums - "Volume 1" and "Volume 3". There was no "Volume 2". However over the years, "Full Moon Fever" has unofficially become "Volume 2". In fact there is a Russian Import version that actually labels "Full Moon Fever" as "Volume 2". As mentioned this was technically a "solo album" by Tom Petty. For years, Petty had recorded with his band - "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers". While this was a "solo album", there are many of the Heartbreakers that are present on this album. Howie Epstein lends background vocals to two songs - "Love is a Long Road" and "I Won't Back Down". Benmont Tench lends his piano for "The Apartment Song". Finally, Mike Campbell - possibly one of the most sought after musicians in the business contributes throughout the whole "Full Moon Fever" collection - including guitars, mandolin, bass, and keyboards.

When Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers burst on the music scene - they appealed to a wide variety of musical styles including Classic Rock, New Wave, and even Punk. However, I feel that Petty's roots were still in Southern Rock. "Full Moon Fever" definitely isn't rooted in Southern Rock, but it does have a strong incorporation of the guitar-laden sound mentioned. This isn't an album where you are going to hear horns or a string section. While you hear some keyboards, it will be the guitars that are going to be the story of this album - whether it's electric or acoustic, every song will make an integral use of the guitar. On top of that, given Petty's unique voice - this really becomes something special. I give a lot of credit to Lynne for putting this all together. It's kind of ironic that Lynne was able to pull off producing both "Full Moon Fever" and the Traveling Wilburys. Lynne was known for his intricate orchestral arrangements with ELO, yet Lynne finds a way to make the natural guitar-laden sound work for Petty on this collection.

"Full Moon Fever" is known for the "hits" that were spurned off this album - these songs being: "Free Fallin", "I Won't Back Down", and "Runnin' Down a Dream (to a lesser extent "Yer So Bad" and "A Face in the Crowd" were also hits). These are good songs, but surprisingly, I found the "other songs" to be the strong points of this collection. Songs such as "Love is a Long Road", "Feel a Whole Lot Better", "Depending on You", "The Apartment Song", "Alright for Now", "A Mind With a Heart of It's Own", and "Zombie Zoo" were the albums strongest songs. Any of these songs could have easily been released as singles and could have achieved a high level of commercial success.

As mentioned, three of the Wilburys make contributions to this album Roy Orbison lends his background vocals to "Zombie Zoo". George Harrison lends Acoustic Guitar and Background Vocals to "I Won't Back Down". Lynne, while lending his hand at co-producing this album with Petty and Mike Campbell also lends Vocals, Bass, Guitar, and Keyboards to the effort. Who can forget the terrific vocal jam between Petty, Harrison, and Lynne on "I Won't Back Down" - i.e. the classic "Hey Baby!". While Harrison didn't directly contribute to the track "Feel a Whole Lot Better", I'd like to think he had some influence on the cover of the Byrds' "Feel a Whole Lot Better". This cover gives the song a distinct Beatle-sque quality. I give Petty a lot of credit for being able to pull this off. At the same time, Petty also remains true to his Southern Rock roots. "A Mind With a Heart of It's Own" definitely sounds like something Petty would have done with the Heartbreakers. Finally, if you want to hear Tom Petty do a lullaby, listen to "Alright for Now".

Perhaps the most interesting part is when Petty puts an interruption prior to the start of "Feel a Whole Lot Better". This interruption tells CD listeners to "wait" until LP or Cassette listeners are able to flip over their media on their player - most humorous.

The liner notes do include all of the lyrics and all of the musician credits and acknowledgements. Overall, fans of Tom Petty and the Wilburys will not be disappointed with this effort. Although this collection does have a guitar-laden sound, it will have a lot of appeal to the mainstream. This is one collection I highly recommend.

One of my favorite CDs! Amazing Rock and Roll!.......2007-06-20

Let me start by saying that I am totally obsessed with this album. I have owned it for several years now and I never get tired of listening to it. I even bought the DVD of the concert after being blown away by the CD! True, I am a Baby Boomer. True, I grew up with the Beatles and Eric Clapton. But, for me, that was a very long time ago in so many ways. I am not "A Fan". I am a normal woman who likes music but would certainly never (under most circumstances) take the time to rate it here on Amazon. The point is, I can't remember the last time I listened to a recording that literally made the hair stand up on the back of my neck! This is amazing Rock and Roll and I defy anyone who claims to be unmoved by the magnitude of this music and the musicians who wrote, and now perform it. I have a new, deep appreciation for the performing artists that Paul McCartny, Ringo Star (yes, even Ringo!) and Jeff Lynn have become; the enduring relevance of the music of George Harrison, the composer; and the deep abiding faith that Eric Clapton is indeed GOD. Eric Clapton was the music director for this concert and the results are extraordinary. Especially wonderful are "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton and "My Sweet Lord" by Billy Preston. Two "negatives": a great performance of "Horse to Water" by Jools Holland and Sam Brown is omitted from the CD and it would have been great if Bob Dylan had been able to be at the concert. That said, this is a great, historic concert by giants of Rock and Roll. It belongs in your library.

Where's "HORSE TO WATER"?!?!?!.......2007-06-02

Have the DVD, bought the "soundtrack" for "Horse To Water" and guess what? IT'S NOT ON IT!!! What kind of "soundtrack" would eliminate, what to me, was one of the highlights of the concert (not to mention, "I'll See You In My Dreams"!) VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! This has ruined what would have been a "Classic CD" to me. Should have named this CD, "SELECTIONS from the CONCERT FOR GEORGE"... STILL 5 stars!

Tribute to George.......2007-05-28

Disc 2 is a fabulous collection of music by artists paying tribue to the music of George. It is wonderful music-I would recommend it to anyone who loves the Beatles work and the music that George loved.

Hard to beat!.......2007-03-09

The collection of talent and the performances on this 2-disc piece of work are exceptional. A superb tribute to an extraordinary artist. Harrison's ability and range were a marvelous contribution to music. Disc 2 alone is worth the bucks.

Fabulous tribute - amazing songs.......2007-01-14

So many people know GH that to add comment is hard, but this tribute concert reveals how Harrison affected the community of English players in his life - It's also great to hear versions of his songs that while true to form, come off in a new light as done by the Clapton-led band and remind us how prolific and original George was once he got out from under the shadow of John and Paul - he started humbly yet persisted with amazing discipline to create his own sound and style, which while not everyone's cup of tea, stands alone as significant work in the evolution of pop rock in the 20th century - may he rest in peace

Though easily as consistent as their first two releases, it was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' third release, Damn the Torpedoes, that catapulted Petty and company into the first rank of American rock acts. It's not hard to understand why. With a slate of driving songs destined to become FM staples ("Refugee," "Here Comes My Girl," "Even the Losers," "Don't Do Me Like That"), it's an album that plays much like half a greatest-hits collection. Fusing a rootsy sensibility heavy with Dylan and Byrds affectations with his own pop instincts (honed by early stints with Mudcrutch and Dwight Twilley) and coupling them with one of rock's most consistently underrated powerhouses, the Heartbreakers, Petty's throwback traditionalism oddly found him riding the crest of the new wave in the late '70s. Take a look at the album cover. That is one iconic shot of Tom Petty who, along with his band of Heartbreakers had started to take the music world by storm, not with something new but a good dose of the familiar melded with a good dose of their youthful exuberance, chiming guitars, and rocking attitude. Through an era known for disco, new wave, hard rock and punk, Petty's music sounded like a refreshing change and holds up, to this day alot better than any trend from 1979.

There is not a bad track on this album from perhaps their most enduring signature tune, "Refugee" to the great closing ballad "Lousiana Rain". In between you get the dreamy surrealism of "Even The Loosers", The catchy organ driven top 10 hit "Don't Do Me Like That", flat out rock and roll spirit of "Century City", "Complex Kid", "What are Your Doing In My Life", the melodic "Here Comes My Girl" and off course, "You Tell Me".

Simply some great rock and roll with southern tinge, spirited vocals chanelling punk and new wave but never straying far from the rock and roll and the bands roots, firmly planted in the 60's.

As the album reads almost like a Greatest Hits collection, it is by far the album to get if you enjoyed the Greatest Hits because you don't get better TPATHB as this, some albums come close, none are poor, yet none better this here one.

First blockbuster for TP&TH.......2006-08-15

PREAMBLE RAMBLE:
After years of hard work and struggle, and two pretty good early albums, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers experienced breakout on a massive scale with an album that still sounds fresh and energetic, more than 25 years later. Paired with Producer Jimmy Iovine, the band produced a sound that was a little bit punk, a touch of Dylan, a dash of Stones, a pinch of Byrds, and a whiff of Skynyrd...a sound that was all at once Florida swampy and California sunny.

THE SONGS:
Somewhere on a radio right at this moment, a discerning DJ is spinning a cut off of this album. Odds are, it could be the propulsive, urgent "Refugee," with it's brilliant couplet:

Somewhere, somehow, somebody musta kicked you around some
Who knows, maybe you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away, and held for ransom?

Followed by the plea: "Honey, you don't have to live like a refugee!"

Which, in Petty's drawly, nasal twang...in phrasing as distinctive and brillant as Sinatra's...sounded something like this: "Hawney, yah doan ... ha-yuff...ta-live-lika-refugeeheeee!" It's all at once compassionate and defiant, and marked Petty as one of those vocalists who is immediately recognizable in any setting, with the ability to take any song and make it his own.

But the hits keep on coming on this album: the beautiful, but unsentimental mid-tempo "Here Comes My Girl," the edgy "Don't Do Me Like That," the bracing "Even the Losers" (who "get lucky sometimes"), and the tear-jerker, "Louisiana Rain," which are all classics in the Petty canon. I also should mention the scorching "Century City" and the Stones-y "Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid)," which are also stellar tracks.

CLOSING THOUGHTS:
This CD almost seems like a "Greatest Hits" complilation, rather than simply being one studio album. But, here is the sound of a great American band catching fire together...not only Petty, but the keyboard/organ brilliance of Benmont Tench and the guitar heroics of Mike Campbell and the rhythmic powerhouse of Ron Blair (bass) and Stan Lynch (drums). Super bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn even makes a valuable contribution here. It's a good reminder that Tom Petty, while truly an American rock icon, is even better when paired with his bandmates.

RECOMMENDATION:
Oh, yes, this is a must for any collection. It's the perfect blend of tough and tender rock and roll, and stands on a par with great works by other American icons like Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, John Mellencamp, The Eagles, The Doors, R.E.M., The Byrds, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and The Allman Brothers. It is one of those works that defines an era, yet remains timeless in its appeal. Get it.

Bonus Tracks = 4 Stars.......2007-06-12

Ideally, the bonus tracks and demo tracks would have emerged as b-sides to singles or as an EP in their own right. One track, the demo of "This Old Town," surpasses the final version included on the original release. The bonus tracks "Home" and "Around the Roses" are quality additions, and better than most other bands' singles. The "Big Weekend" demo is less necessary.

If you don't own the album yet (five stars in its own right!), this is definitely the edition to get--the additional tracks are worth the extra dinero (although the "leather" packaging is slightly more of a questionable enhancement). But what if you already bought the original version? Find the added tracks on iTunes (if they're available...) or else wait for the used price of this one to drop significantly to, say, $8.98 or less.

Another great solo album from Tom Petty.......2007-06-11

I love Tom Petty's new Highway Companion Album, and I highly recomend buying this re-release because the two tracks that are added onto this version are excellent. If you like Tom Petty's last solo album Wildflowers you will love this album. It can be played all the way through without skipping tracks and it never gets old. In fact I find a new favorite every time I listin to it. Definitley a more mellow Petty but he is at the top of his game with the lyrics. A must buy!

Blame the record company..........2007-06-09

Just to throw this out there... This isn't Tom's fault. I doubt he would have done this to his fans. Afterall, we know how vigorously he defended the price of CDs with 'Damn the Torpedoes.' (Threatening to title it $8.98 if they increased the price to $9.98).

Here's what I'd do. Buy the Special Edition for yourself and give your original Highway Companion CD to a friend or family member... get them into TP. Then everyone wins (although unfortunately that includes the record company too).

Musically Great, but I expected more from Tom.......2007-06-07

What happened to The Last DJ Tom? The Tom Petty who made a point in Houston in 1992 that all the signs at the Woodlands had nothing to do with him. Times are a-changin' when the artist starts double dippin'

Record Companies = Organized Crime.......2007-06-06

Record companies mirror the Sopranos more than legitimized business. Doing such a thing with a group such as the Beatles makes a little sense because the band is deceased. "Buyer beware" is the phrase that fits regardless of what "deluxe" edition you purchase.

To me, the original Napster is really Robin Hood......steal from the rich to give to the poor.........

If Bob Dylan had been a garage rocker instead of a poet, there may not have been room for Tom Petty on the rock landscape. But things turned out great: Petty burst on the scene as it was splitting into two camps (rock and punk) and somehow managed to please both with his whiny sneer and taut, jangly guitars. (Dylan went on to be...Dylan.) Frantic tunes like "Rockin' Around (With You)" and "Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll" (predating the Jags a few years later) helped land the band--temporarily--in the punk and new-wave camp, although choppy guitars and nervous energy were as much a part of the band's style as was a more traditional guitar sound. The now-classic "American Girl" was a brazen nod to the Byrds, and Stones-ish rock sentiments fueled the bar-band leanings of "Hometown Blues" and the sexy "Breakdown." "The Wild One, Forever" proved that beneath the sneer there was a sensitive guy who knew how to write a great love song. --Lorry Fleming

Garage rock? Power pop? Adolescent shadow? all that and so much more...........2007-03-09

In the genre of "mood music" rock few songs can match Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Breakdown" and "Wilde One, Forever" with their restrained time registers and the jazz like precision of the instrument voices, with each taking a lead and then dropping back to chorus through the song cycle. Mike Campbell, known to cognisceti. as one of the world's most technically gifted and underappreciated guitar players (along with Jethro Tull's Martin Barre) shines here on leads everyone thinks Petty is playing. "American Girl" shows off the full dimensions of back to back Rickenbachers on lead and rhythm. Perhaps we inflate the significance of those few albums we could afford in our youth, and their repetition driven by economic deprivation and the horror of pay-ola sludge pumped from the radio reinforces the perception of their greatness. But when one of my current students overheard me playing this album they said "cool new sound...who is that?" Proving forever that accurate garage rock crossed with power pop energy never looses its appeal through the generations.

I love this Tom Petty LP, but goddamnit, there is only ONE Heartbreakers: Johnny Thunders, Walter Lure, Billy Rath, and Jerry Nolan.

The Wild One Lives On!.......2006-09-01

Here are the beginnings of one the greatest songwriters and bands in rock and roll history. This album has some really great tunes that have largely remained ignored by classic rock radio."The Wild One, Forever" is a song that really moved me the first time I heard it and still does. "Luna" is an intriguing song that reminds me of "Supernatural Radio" that was recorded on the "Yellow Album" some 20 years later in 1996. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Tom and Heartbreakers live this year in June, and they played a real lost classic, "Fooled Again (I don't like it)" which has a great riff. "Mystery Man" features some incredible slide guitar work by Mike Campbell that you can still hear today 30 years later. If you want to understand how Tom Petty got his start, you must have this cd!

Oh yeah. Alright. .......2006-01-28

This is the good stuff. The straight ahead snarling young man brand of rock and roll.The hits you already know ("Breakdown" and "American Girl") and that's enough to justify this CD but don't miss the excellent lesser known gems such as "Mystery Man". The different styles on display here presage his later work but this stuff along with his other early records are imbued with that thrilling virile snarly-ness that us ladies just can't resist.

In addition to the excellent music, there is some hilarious album art...TP and the HBs in tight leather pants with heavy metal hairdos and...shotguns? What a scream! Ah, we thought they were sayck-EEEE way back in the day. What were we thinking.

Recommended for all fans of the straight-ahead rock genre.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers 1976 self titled released is probably the band's most underappreciated album. The album didn't really spawn any hits when it first came out. Breakdown became a hits about two years after the release of the album. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers contains fan favorites and hits such as American Girl and Breakdown, as well as many more fine tunes such as Mystery Man, The Wild One, Strangered in the Night, and HOmetown Blues. If you enjoyed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits and would like to dig deeper into their catalog, you should check out this their 1976 self titled album.
