The Killers five-million-selling debut, 2004's Hot Fuss, saw the stylish Las Vegas quartet mining inspiration from its favorite '80s British acts Duran Duran, the Cure, and the Smiths. On its follow-up, the group turns its focus homeward. First there's the album title, Sam's Town, which pays tribute to the old-school local casino where the band got its start. Then there's the music inside, a collection of windswept rockers in the vein of Bruce Springsteen that leave the indie-disco vibe of "Mr. Brightside" in the desert dust. Working with producers Alan Moulder and Flood (best known for their work with U2, Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails), everything here sounds bigger and shinier, with full-blown strings and choirs coloring epics like "When You Were Young" and "The River Is Wild." Coming soon to a stadium near you. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
As good as Hot Fuzz... just different.......2007-07-14
The title says the bulk of how I feel. I listen to the album in its entirety whenever I listen to it... I like every song though there are some that I like more than others (which is the same with Hot Fuzz).
The music is a bit bolder, and a bit more grandiose (musically and lyrically), but the synth is still there and after giving the album a listen or 3 you'll be singing along to each track. The lead singer's (Flowers) voice sounds a bit different to me on this album, but not for better or worse, just slightly different. The album definitely seems to be more mature (but I have no idea where the Springsteen analogy came from), the songs and the hooks aren't as poppy (at least not in every song) and it takes more than one listening for some songs to grow on you. (For instance I didn't like 'Sams Town' (track 1) the first couple times I heard it, but now its one of my favorites).
Overall, if you like popular music, or alternative music in general... its worth listening to, but I wouldn't expect a life altering experience.
doesnt measure up to hot fuss.......2007-07-09
sorry to all of you who really like this album, but in my own opinion, it can't measure up to 'hot fuss'
I love it!.......2007-06-27
The only thing that upset me was that there is no Killers c.d that has all my favorite songs by them on it. I do like most of the tracks on this one and on each c.d. that I bought they have great opening songs to start you out.
So Why Are These Guys Critical Whipping Boys?.......2007-06-26
Sure some of Sam's Town is a lot closer to two stars than five stars (think the pointless brace of enterlude and exitlude, or Uncle Jonny, the inevitable nod to every rock band's friend or relative with a voracious appetite for drugs, or the painfully banal Why Do I Keep Counting), but like former Giants/Cubs/Mets slugger Dave Kingman, when The Killers aren't striking out, they are hitting some mammoth and memorable shots. I was driving as Read My Mind spun up when I first played the CD. I had to pull off the road to avoid being a danger to myself and others. Nothing has changed in the hundred or so listens since then -- it is as thrilling a four minute compendium of longing and bravado as anything I've heard in a long time. (And, for me, it doesn't hurt a bit that its two bridges -- "the good old days; the honest man..." etc. -- recall David Garza's wonderful Crown of Thorns on his Overdub CD.) Nothing on the rest of the CD quite reaches that same high point and even the best songs of the second half, e.g. Bones and This River is Wild, come off like reworkings of the strongest material on earlier cuts, e.g. Sam's Town and When You Were Young.
But here's the thing -- The Killers are not afraid to stretch themselves. No playing safe here. They do bombast fit for an arena, they do humor, they do tender, and, with this bittersweet Valentine to their home town, they tell a pretty good story. Some of it doesn't work so well; a lot of it does. My personal guess is that as they mature there will be more and more successful blendings of those disparate elements. As they say about NFL draft picks, there's a lot of up side in this band. They just have to keep producing more "It's funny how you just break down/Waitin' on some sign/I pull up to the front of your driveway/With magic soakin' my spine" and less "am I strong enough/to be the one/will I live to have some children."
Still rocking, even after all the "Hot Fuss".......2007-06-02
Look, this album is no Hot Fuss, so I wish that people would stop comparing it. I mean do you compare Led Zeppelin I to Physical Graffiti??? No. It's the same band folks, just on a different path ---- and that's certainly no reason to write the whole album off. Besides, it wouldn't be right if they went in and simply made "Hot Fuss 2". That's not what GREAT bands throughout rock history have done, unless were talking about Metallica or AC/DC, which have earned the respect to do so.
There are many good tunes on this record --- of course, "When You Were Young", "Bones", and the hauntingly beautiful "Read My Mind". The album was worth purchasing for the later of those songs alone. Even so, the remaining of the album is still enjoyable and of great quality. For all the haters (who are more than likely disgruntled 90's alt. fans)--SHUT UP!!! This is a good album and worthy of appreciation.

It's amazing the difference a year makes. Upon its release, August and Everything After sounded remarkably fresh, a welcome change from the crunch and screech of grunge. Blending the vocal athleticism of Van Morrison with the moody rock of The Band, the Counting Crows turned on a whole legion of fans turned off by modern rock. But what sounded fresh soon became stale as dozens of bands flocked to the radio with euthanized versions of the Counting Crows' sound. But you shouldn't hold that against the Crow boys. August and Everything After is a fantastic rock album. Though "Mr. Jones" was the moneymaker, the disc features such standout cuts as the dark lilt of "Anna Begins," the morose "Rain King," and the outstanding U2-meets-Grant Lee Buffalo anthem "Murder of One." Maybe time, and another listen, will heal the damage wrought. --Tod Nelson
Customer Reviews:
Favorite CD of all time.......2007-07-06
I bought this CD when i was in high school back in the early 90's when it hit the scene. I couldn't get enough of it at the time and still love listening to it today. Every song on this CD is beautifully done.
Brilliant debut album.......2007-07-02
This CD is still fantastic from start to finish. It captured all the energy and sound that Counting Crows had when they first burst on to the scene. The early 90s music scene was full of all kinds of sounds. Counting Crows brought back the rock you can sing with or just chill out with.
Mr Jones, Round here and Rain king were the best songs on this cd but you could easily play from start to end and appreciate it. Their following albums are also good but their debut was certainly the best.
Soon after came Hootie and the Blowfish, Sister Hazel and Dave Matthews with similar sounds. But Counting Crows were first to bring back this sound.
August ... Is A Year-Round Classic!.......2007-05-23
If you're reading this review, you, no doubt, are familiar with the Counting Crows by now. Perhaps you have heard "Mr. Jones" or another fine song on the album and are considering buying it.
Take my advice: BUY IT!
I have owned this album since its debut and I have found that it never ages. I listen to it often and find myself connecting with the deep lyric content. The timbre changes keep the songs fresh and interesting with the use of dobro, mandolin, and accordian. Adam Duritz's voice always seems to be fighting a battle that he is winning. This Translated West Coast sound employs a folk element, yet it is Rock; do not doubt it. The songs are finely crafted and you can listen to the whole album without ever hitting the skip button. The moods process from hopeful to meloncholy and back again. The lyric content is easily grasped and is a reflection of the feelings of most of Generation X, or anyone else that is still breathing. You will find it exceptional, I'm sure. So go ahead and order it.
A versatile collection of songs.......2007-04-22
The dozen or so years since this album was released has proven the worth, value, and talent contained within.
The songs have been covered, re-done, played with a myriad of acoustic, electric, and string arrangements and they always hold up.
The lyrical potency of Murder of One, Anna Begins, Rain King, and ROund Here prove their timelessness again and again whether through individual listening or through application in film and TV.
This is a landmark album for the band, American rock, and the 90s
First Album I Ever Loved.......2007-04-11
I had just gotten my first car and was taking a 5 hour road trip, probably to visit a family member. I borrowed some CD's from a friend just to have something to listen to. Of course I had heard Mr Jones on the radio, a year earlier. I fell in love with this album driving, and listened to it over and over and over. It was the first album I ever had an intimate relationship with. That was the first time music ever meant so much to me. Its an amazing album and every song will stick with you. The music is simple but mature, and its all based on Adam Duritz's writing, and yearning to be a star.

well..........2007-07-18
Id be lying if i didnt say that thrill seeker was better in my opinion. I honestly liked the production a lot more on thier debut. Messengers has that high ended sound thats trendy for metalcore bands to use. I felt thats thrill seeker had a much more warmer tone thats i thought complimented their sound. Also I feel the over abundance of breakdowns on this album is a little unessesary. And as a lot of people have already said, pretty much all of them sound remarkebly the same and the overuse of the china makes it all too aparent. It seems to dumb down the album. Im not saying they shouldnt have breakdowns, im saying that they should be used more tastefully. Also as one guy mentioned, Every song does seem to be in the same key. But lets be honest here. so many metalcore bands do that and it bothers me. Its not all bad though. Theres definatley some maturity since TS. But the lack of diversity is what brought it down i think. And dont get me wrong. These guys are very talented. Especially for their age. And they can only grow from here. Id definatley like to see some improvement in the guitar area though. It goes without saying that the drums showcase in this band. I kinda get the feeling that the music could get a lot more complex if the guitars werent so rythmic. As for the vocals, definatly an improvement from their last vocalist. And as for whoever said that singing is emo. They need to shut up. since when did singing suddenly automatically become labeled as emo. Unless its that whiney 15 year old sounding barely able to stay on key singing, Than its not emo. Not everything has to be 'brutal' or 'sick' or whatever. get some variety damnit. by the way, this is my fathers profile or whatever im just using it.
Brutal, however............2007-07-12
Let's start with the positives. The production is terrific, everything sounds crystal clear. This is undoubtedly one of the heaviest albums I've heard to date. The technicality of the guitars and drums is very tight and solid.
Now to the not-so-good. I have to agree with a previous review that states that every single breakdown sounds the same. It's like they wrote 1 breakdown...then changed it by 1 note and used it 11 times. The china is way over used....it's like the drummer thinks he needs to signal to the audience when the breakdowns begin and end. "Well this is the breakdown so i HAVE to use my china..." I don't mean to bad mouth anybody, he's a very talented drummer, but lacks some variety when it comes to writing breakdown beats. I also have to agree with the fact that many of the guitar riffs utilize the same key in every song, resulting in many guitar parts sounding similar. Finally, while the new vocalist is an improvement over the last because of his good range, the vocal patterns can sound thrown together at times.
Overall, like I said...very brutal, but the songs truly lack a lot of individuality and distinction. Maybe that's what they were going for...? Maybe a lot of the hardcore fans do indeed have the "i don't care if it has variety, melody, or harmony, as long as it's heavy" attitude. To each his own I suppose.
sigh.......2007-07-12
ok i never got into their first cd.
this one however has a lot more technical riffs, its a lot cleaner and good production.
HOWEVER, the one thing why i dont like this cd. is the drummer. he's good but her does the same thing during EVERY breakdown. always use his china constantly. i didnt find one breakdown that didnt sound similar cuz their drummer.
and becasue of that, this cd is crappy
Unbelievable........2007-06-27
First things first, don't listen to the people that have given this album a bad review. ABR has matured so much from thrill seeker.
The music is so much tighter; the new singer, Jake Luhrs, is amazing. His range is good and uses a few different screams, all in good taste.
The breakdowns are way more brutal than any of the ones on thrill seeker; they have a different feel that's more technical. The lyrics are well written and composed by the entire band opposed to just Josh McManness writing them all as they were on T.S.
The song by song review written by "Josh Cunningham" on 6/21 is very accurate so I will spare the repetition. However, I would personally rate track 8 "The Balance" a 10/10. The breakdown at the end is sick.
So if you liked Thrill Seeker, but you're looking for something more, pick up Messengers. It will blow your mind, these guys are extremely talented and have come a long way.
abr's best to date.......2007-06-23
whoever says this album sold out or isn't as good as thill seeker needs a hearing check. The songs are less prog, but still heavy as hell, and full of sick breakdowns. Black sheep is amazing. thats all there is to it. the part "too late to wake, too late to wake, too late to wake!!" gives me chills on my chills. all songs are sick. great christian prog-metalcore. the best out there. ignore all the numwits who say anything negative about this album. pick it up!!!!:p

A Hot Album.......2007-01-19
If you are a Neil Diamond fan then this is a must have album. Diamond shows his many talent on this one album. Just about every song on the album was written by him. The cover shows Neil Diamond in his younger years with long hair. It really is one of those albums you can listen to over and over again and still come back for more. Any fan of Neil Diamond would be foolish not to make this a part of their collection of the best of Neil Diamond. If you like Neil Diamond this album will not disappoint you.
Hot August Night.......2007-01-04
ThisCD replaces the original LP album I bought a generatio ago. Yes, I still have the oiginal! It was excelent then ad even better now remastered and Neil's voice is still fresh and young, not like his recent recordings. Buy it, you'll love it too.
I was there..........2007-01-03
My mom and dad thought this live concert at the Greek in Los Angeles would be a fun experience for two little teenage girls - sister and me - and I bless them for that decision every time I listen to this performance again. We loved it so much that my dad found a way to get a second set of tickets for this 8-day (I think it was 8 days) stand. I've owned this performance in every media form ever issued. 34 years later the music still transports me back to those glorious summer nights in the Griffith Park hills. I've seen and heard some incredible performances in my life, but this one is still tops. The re-mastered version just makes a great thing better.
Pure Musical Genius.......2006-05-21
This album is one of answers to if you were stranded on a desert island... what albums would you want with you. This is a 34 year old album that is a relevant today as it was then. The man could write, sing and entertain. One of his last performances before a couple year vacation, he went out on top and then reinvented himself as a romantic adult crooner as he grew out of the hippie aged songwritter. He has put out numerous live albums, (Love at the Greek, Hot August Night II) and while his original live album "GOlD" was a solid late 60's attempt, this is the album to own and hit the "continous play button."

Here is one of the greatest violinists of this or any other time playing student pieces ranging from elementary to virtuosic, so that budding violinists can hear what they sound like in a master player's hands. Let it be said at once that Perlman lavishes on them as much loving care and heartfelt expressiveness as on the staples of the literature, playing with his inimitably beautiful, golden tone, easy brilliance, stylistic flair, and captivating charm. He's clearly having a grand time. His fans will not be disappointed. The orchestrations, by unidentified arrangers, greatly enhance the music's effects; the student orchestra sounds thoroughly professional. The disc's educational value, however, is open to question, because the technical resources of students learning these pieces are worlds removed from Perlman's. For example, he uses full vibrato and dazzling speeds; he plays in first position, as written, only in the Rieding concerto; in the Seitz, he succumbs to his flair for virtuoso slides. The Bériot is stunning; the Viotti, the only "real" piece that turns up in concerts, including Perlman's own, sounds beautiful, but strangely uninvolved. Experienced teachers may well fear that listening to this disc could intimidate, frustrate, and discourage students rather than inspire them. So, enjoy it, but keep it away from the kids! --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
A must-buy for students learning any of these concertos!.......2007-02-28
Absolutely delighted with this buy! It is wonderful to have such a good recording by a maestro for student concertos. Although there is absolutely no way my son can play as well as Perlman, it is very helpful and important that he gets to listen to how beautiful the concertos can sound.
Lovely for beginning students!.......2006-11-06
My students love listening to this recording and get lots of inspiration from it. Big thanks to Mr. Perlman for making this recording.
Listen! Discuss!.......2006-10-11
Of course the kids should listed to this CD! Whether they are going to like it or not, whether it will sound imaginative enough, whether the articulation, rubato's, dynamics, vibrato's, slides, tone production etc will be thrilling or not, are all aspects that will be in the ears of the listeners and would form useful topics for discussion. Buy the CD before it is too late.
Remarkable; especially for violinists.......2006-03-27
My dad bought this cd for me when I was only 8 years old; that time I was barely learning how to play the violin; now that I am learning the Accolay concerto, I was rummaging through my cds and found that this cd contained the Accolay concerto. I listened to it, mesmerized and fascinated on how the interpretation was very different than I thought it would be. Perlman is no Heifetz or Kriesler, but the fact that he played this when he was about my age must have brought back memories for him. He uses an extensive vibrato, and he dosen't fall into habits making it a little jumpy like he does for several other famous violin concertos. These several concertos on the cd may not be as famous as Tchaikovsky's, Mendelssohn's or Beethoven's, but it isn't too complicated, and the tune is very melodious. Highly Recommended
A great CD aimed at young violinists.......2006-03-03
Perlman plays four concertos and one ballet scene that are usually played by intermediate level violin students. Recordings of these pieces are hard to find, so it is nice that a master of the violin decided to make a recording using a student orchestra at Juilliard. Perlman does a wonderful job of playing simple music. It is nice for children to have a recording showing them how one of the world's best violinists makes their beginner concertos into beautiful music. I highly recommend it for Suzuki students in Vol. 4 who are beginning to play concertos (the first Seitz in Vol. 4 is the 3rd movement of the Seitz Concerto no. 2 on this CD). It is nice to hear the concertos with full orchestra, instead of the usual violin plus piano that is usually found on the Suzuki CDs.
The music itself is simple: it is aimed at children who are intermediate violin students, not Symphony Hall. The first two concertos are played in first position only. If you're looking for Perlman playing advanced music with all the "bells and whistles", then this is not the CD for you: you should look for his recordings of the standard adult repertoire. If you're looking for a CD to please your intermediate level violinist, then this one will likely do the trick. My 9 year old daughter loves it.

Great music with a great performance........2006-08-15
I found the glass harmonica music most relaxing with an etherial quality. The performance is outstanding.
Thomas Bloch's Interpretation is Second-to-None.......2003-01-02
This is a great introduction to the exquisite Glass Harmonica. Naxos once again enlarges our listening pleasure by allowing such gifted musician/composers as Thomas Bloch a wider audience than other, more recondite labels have afforded him. This instrument, invented by Franklin, and taken seriously by such greats as Mozart and Beethoven, is only now coming into its own again. Bloch is an integral part of that rebirth. Delicate, eerie, rumored to drive the listener mad, or to attract ghosts, the sound of the Glass Harmonica hovers at the very edges of hearing: a clean, celestial tone. You will never forget it once you hear its distictive sound. Liner notes give the instrument's fascinating history. Bloch himself attempts (along with such great post-moderns such as John Cage) to create a future for the Glass Harmonica with his "Sancta Maria" and does an extraordinary job. The price, too, for this CD is extraordinary. What a bargain!
unbelievable.......2002-12-11
the music of the glass harmonica is so unusal that it is a joy to listen to. it is a shame that it is not more main stream the tones are so unearthly that is is like a song from a fantasy you really start to believe that elves are playing the music it is something out of Tolkin
Thomas Bloch is a great 20th century composer.......2002-10-09
All right. This is a great album. It explores the history of the glass harmonica since the classical period. But to add to the other reviewers, there is one cut - the last cut - done by Thomas Bloch in the last century - Sancta Maria - that makes the whole album worthwhile. It is an extraordinary track and I don't care if the soprano is female or male. It is great music and a great listening pleasure. You will want to play it over and over again. Make it you most favorite MP3.
interesting, generally excellent.......2002-04-05
I would disagree with the reviewer below that this is anything more than a curiosity. Even the works on this disc by great composers such as Mozart and Beethoven are generally trivial. At the same time, this is fine playing of a highly unusual instrument by a polished virtuoso. Some of the pieces, however, I could do without. For instance, while Thomas Bloch's playing is excellent, his compositional skills are somewhat lacking. His own original work, complete with overdubbed whiny male soprano, is the disc's finale and sounds more like a corny film soundtrack than anything else. In addition, it must be noted that the performance here of Donizetti's "Mad Scene" from Lucia utilizes possibly the worst soprano ever recorded (short of Florence Foster Jenkins). I wouldn't wish her off-pitch shrieking on my worst enemies.

These historic sessions, recorded between 1969 and 1970 and originally released as a 90-minute double LP, merged jazz and rock into the hybrid genre known as fusion. They remain Miles Davis's most controversial recordings. Davis, along with pianists Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Joe Zawinul; bassist Dave Holland; soprano saxophonist Wayne Shorter; bass clarinetist Benny Maupin; drummers Jack DeJohnette, Billy Cobham, and Lenny White; and percussionist Airto Moreira, went electric with rock rhythms, and the rest, as they say, is history, or as some feel, the end of jazz history.
Now, all of the sessions' 265 minutes are contained on this four-CD set, compiled from alternate takes, nine unreleased tracks, and selections from previously released LPs. The superb remastering reveals the spectral power of Davis's amplified, muted, and open trumpet painting on a swirling harmonic canvas created by Hancock, Corea, and Zawinul, especially on Zawinul's impressionistic "Pharoah's Dance," Shorter's elliptical "Sanctuary," and Davis's rocking "John McLaughlin."
The previously unreleased tracks, including "Yaphet," "Corrado," "Tevere," "The Big Green Serpent," and Zawinul's "Double Image," contain some interesting East Indian motifs and inventive arrangements but will probably not change anyone's mind about this well-debated period of Miles Davis's career. --Eugene Holley Jr.

So much untapped potential..........2007-07-11
Okay, first off these are not songs from the "real" B*tches Brew sessions - those were finished when this album was released. Rather, this is a collection of mostly fantastic outtakes released in the wake of B-Brew, around the time a few tracks from Big Fun were being recorded, which explains the overlap between these two albums. Now Brew itself is not one of my favorite Miles albums - I think it has its moments (title track; Miles Runs the Voodoo Down; John McLaughlin; five minutes of Spanish Key), but is weighed down by filler songs. As far as Miles' fusion goes, I prefer In a Silent Way and Big Fun immensly. You don't get much filler on the full boxed set.
Okay, so sure, some of the best songs are issued on Big Fun, which nine times of ten will be less expensive than this: I speak, of course, of Great Expectations (what a song!), Yaphet, Trevere (what a bad song! But it's the only loser out of the outtakes, along with Feio!), The Little Blue Frog, Lonely Fire (top notch!), and Recollections (Beautiful!). So I'd guide you to Big Fun whether or not you inteded to buy this album.
If you didn't, here's one reason to: Guinevere. If you're familiar with the Crosby, Stills & Nash original, I can tell you right now you'll never hear it the same way again when you've heard the long (twenty minutes), trippy "fusion-odyssey" version this one presents. It renders the song near-unrecognizable. You may love it (I do!!), you may hate it, but you can't deny Miles really puts his own stamp on it. A very well-made, intricately arranged cover.
Another great song is the intense Corrado. Miles and the group really rock out on this one. Him backing up his claim that he could make the best damn rock band you ever heard (or something to that effect).
Plus Double Image is a pretty good song too! I mean, not as good as Guinevere, but still a nice song. So are the two standard-length tracks, The Big Green Serpent and Take It or Leave it.
I'm surprised Miles shelved so much of this. He could've easily gotten another very good album out of this material, even when we include the songs not released on Big Fun. Guinevere, Corrado, Double Image, Take it or Leave it and the Big Green Serpent... could've been great. And he'd have to call the album Corrado, because the word sounds cool.
Yes, like all of Miles' other boxed sets, this one just screams "for fans only". But if you're a fan, you can't go wrong, really.
Bitches Brew rocks.......2007-03-09
This box set is absolutely amazing. Totally innovating, and did it ever revolutionize music!
Fascinating groove.......2007-02-25
I have enjoyed listening to this music both intently and as background. At times it all seemed like so much musical doodling but when I considered the calibre of the musicians playing I became much more appreciative of its musical integrity. Excellent production.
Simply Miles...........2007-01-12
Very nice..........2006-12-04
I remember buying this in high school. Miles wasn't particularly popular at the time, and my brother gave me a look and said "why did you buy this crap?". My brother, ironically, would get into jazz when he got into college, yet, never apologised for this insult. As for this music, it's truly outstanding. It's incredibly complicated stuff, sometimes with 3 keyboardists, 2 drummers, 2 bassists all playing at once, with Miles on top of it all. The initial 6 tracks are some of the greatest stuff I've ever heard, with Spanish Key being my favorite. I remember being put off by it a bit at the time. The only Davis albums I had at the time were the mediocre The Man with the Horn, and the better We Want Miles, so I wasn't up on the great Miles. I have around 28 Miles CD's now, and this is definitely top five. I like Big Fun better, but the music there was from these sessions, so it's a bit confusing. The remastering is light years superior to the vinyl, and is definitely worth the upgrade. It also has superlative liner notes, detailing the sessions and some good historical background. As for the bonus tracks, most of this material was released on other albums. The songs Great Expectations, Orange Lady, and Lonely Fire ended up on the original release of Big Fun. Recollections, Trevere, The Little Blue Frog (master take), and Yaphet were also released on the remastered version of Big Fun. Guiniverre ended up on Circle in the Round (in a slightly shorter version), and Double Image (the short version) ended up on Live Evil. So there are only 6 actual new tracks (Corrado, The Big Green Serpent, an alternate take of The Little Blue Frog, Feio, a slightly longer version of Double Image, and Take It or Leave It). These 6 are good, but unless you really adore Miles, you may be able to do without them, even though I think this is a good set to have.

The Killers match postpunk guitars with a synthesizer overlay that recalls '80s New Wave without burying their sound in nostalgia. On their debut, Hot Fuss, frontman Brandon Flowers plumbs his imagination for tales of murdered lovers ("Jenny Was a Friend of Mine," "Midnight Show"), voyeurism ("Mr. Brightside"), and sexual confusion (the single "Somebody Told Me"). Flowers and his mates are obviously canny students; the total effect is of a playacted obsession, but one made irresistible by their skillful, catchy songs. If there's an occasional misstep (the painfully earnest line "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" from "All These Things That I've Done"), it seems of a piece with the Killers' influences. As it is, Hot Fuss is one of several recent releases that bring a diverting faux glamour to the mainstream rock scene. --Rickey Wright

An important debut release.......2007-01-13
We needed this group to form and make this music.
I haven't gotten this excited about a new band in quite a while.
The Killers are destined to eventually be grouped with music greats like The Smiths, The Cure, REM, U2, Nirvana, and Coldplay in the near future.
This debut CD guarantees that!
Very original, fun and catchy - this CD is one of my favorites - I highly recommend it.
It's indie rock and roll !!!.......2007-01-11
I loved this CD!!! I know there are like 5 different versions of this album, and I chose this because it covers the songs I like, it's not too expensive and it arrived just in time for me to listen it over and over again before the concert. It's great, it is the nearest to collector's edition, without all the fuzz of searching.
soldiers of glam.......2006-12-31
Catchy, electrifying tunes that take the word "derivative" to all time highs. This band proudly wears its influences on its sleeves while delivering a fresh sound and brings the energy to new levels. The melodies are hypnotic and the vocalist makes the best of his abilities. They really seem to have striven to be good on every song on this release, which proves refreshing. Their determination was worth it.
The work is high energy and pleasantly addictive!
Best Album of 2004.......2006-12-15
This album was ripe with hits and remains in the CD changer in my car to this day. The Killers melded new wave, alternative, and rock influences and released quite possibly one of the best first albums anyone has seen in a at least a decade. There are a few songs on the album that i'm not hugely fond of, but the strengths more than overshadow the few weaker parts, and even the songs I skip are by no means terrible. Buying the import with these three bonus tracks and a bonus DVD with a few music videos on it was well worth it to me, and i'm glad I bought it over the lower priced regular version.
Here's my track by track analysis, with my score in parenthesis, 5 being the highest, 1 the lowest:
Jenny Was a Friend of Mine (5) - Terrific opener, driving rhythms, great chorus.
Mr. Brightside (5) - Probably the most recognized, if not overplayed track on the album, but with good reason, another driving, strong vocals.
Smile Like You Mean It (5) - Favorite song on the album, haunting lyrics, extraordinary use of guitars and synth, great percussion work, especially on cymbals. I don't think i'll ever get tired of this song.
Somebody Told Me (5) - Another driving rock song. Well-made for radio.
All These Things I've Done (5) - Yes, it's true that the line "I've got soul but i'm not a soldier" isn't the best writing in history, but the guitar and rhythm carry it, with good vocal variety. The video on the DVD of this song is pretty damned good as well.
Andy, You're a Star (3) - Mediocre at best, it's a change of pace from the rest of the album up until this point to be sure, but seems overly reptitive. It's either a 2 or 3 but is at a 3 at this point, though that might be overly generous.
On Top (5) - Good use of synth, could have been overdone but luckily they knew where to pull back with it and focus on the lyrics. Flowers' voice seems louder on this song than on previous tracks, and it helps to carry the tune.
Change Your Mind (5) - I was thrilled to see this song used in many of the trailers for 'the movie "Thank You For Smoking' earlier this year, as it's a neat song. The synth approaches borderline over the top, but the vocals are so wonderful, that it doesn't overpower. This is probably my third favorite on the disc, if not a close second.
Believe Me Natalie (5) - Carried by a heavy bassline, it's another storytelling type song, not a bad song, but nothing legendary. It's barely a 5 in my book, it's a good song but might score lower if compared to other Killers songs only. I do however score basing songs against other music of similiar genre, so it remains a 5.
Midnight Show (4) - Not a bad song, but the vocals seem to be lacking, and get lost in the background it seems at times.
Everything Will Be Alright (3) - I'm not sure how this song is even at 3 stars, it's a change of pace, but seems like a bad way to end an album, and this is where it did end on the normal version of the disc. It's not terrible, but probably the weakest track on the album. Could have been better if the vocals were done differently, I liked the rhythm, just hated the delivery.
Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll (5) - First of three bonus tracks, and is possibly my second favorite song. It's catchy as all getout, and Flowers' seems to be right on target with the vocal delivery and range. Great guitar work, and the bassline was done perfectly. Bonus points for the tambourine hit in the first verse as well, very nice.
The Ballad of Michael Valentine (5) - Solid tune, it has a few changes throughout of all the different instruments. Lots of cymbals at some points, but gets the job done.
Under the Gun (5) - Weakest of the 3 bonus tracks but still a good tune, though short. More substance would do it some good. Not the worst song they could have picked to end the album (see above).
Overall, this is a strong buy, and a worthy addition to anyone's collection that enjoys this genre of music.
Hot Fuss (Deluxe Tour Edition):
5 Star Songs: 11
4 Star Songs: 1
3 Star Songs: 2
Overall: Strong 5 (93% - 4.6/5)
Magnum Opus.......2006-11-29
Seldom does an album come along where every song is worth listening to repeatedly. Hot Fuss is one of those rare exceptions. Whether a listener will enjoy the music is a matter of personal preference. But if you do like the Killers, you certainly like the majority of songs on this album.
Like most performers, The Killers produce songs that have an acquired taste. Over time, you will find more and more of the songs on Hot Fuss appealing. In many cases, the songs have a buildup similar to those of Depeche Mode, where there is a great deal of anticipation during the escalating tempo. I find songs like "All These Things That I've Done" excellent for hardcore weightlifting because of this buildup.
While their genre hard to describe, the Killers sound similar to the Stokes with a little Cure, Depeche Mode and the Clash mixed in. Sublime [not the group Sublime, but Webster's definition] in many circumstances, there are coherent messages behind many of the songs on Hot Fuss. Others are just fund to listen to. Though, from my perspective, the verse "I wanna shine on in the hearts of men" in the "All These Things That I've Done" is simply inspiring.

Its in the way that you use it!.......2007-06-10
I love the song, "Its In The Way That You Use It", and there are a couple of other good ones on the CD, and some good solos. Overall, though, this CD sounds too much like Phil Collins for my taste. I like the tone of Eric's guitar and his licks are great, but I prefer it when he does things his own way. The first track is great though.
Good songs........2007-03-19
I love this CD. It's from the `80s, but it doesn't sound "dated" to me. It's just good sounding music. It features Eric Clapton on vocals and tasty guitar, Nathan East with his funky bass guitar lines, Phil Collins with his diverse and heavy drum beats, and the creative keyboard melodies of Greg Phillinganes. Highlights for me are "Run", "Tearing Us Apart" (A duet with Tina Turner), "Hung Up On Your Love", "Miss You", "Behind The Mask", and "Grand Illusion".
I actually bought this CD after watching the "Eric Clapton & Friends Live 1986" DVD, which I also recommend. It features several of the songs on this CD.
For optimal listening pleasure, I recommend the re-mastered version of this CD. Big sound, good songs.
Overproduced sequel to Behind The Sun..........2007-02-18
1986 - Phil Collins is back behind the controls & is now playing all of the drums (except on in the the way that you use it - steve ferrone). I'm not sure why he didn't play all the drums on Behind the Sun... Anyway this album consisted of just Clapton (guitar), Collins (drums/production), phillinganes (keys/vocals), & east (bass/vocals). Tina Turner also makes a vocal appearance on tearing us apart. this album is much more produced than behind the sun with more keyboard & synth bass lines shooting at more R&B as BTS aimed for a more bluesy/rocky sound. That's okay I guess... Collins definitely had a feel for R&B in his solo stuff & it showed in his outside production as well & clapton agreed. Clapton's vocals are strong & smoky as in BTS & he sounds healthy & happy. His guitaring is more distorted with plenty of good solo work retaining his characteristic claptonisitic sound. East & phillinganes bring a more synth-bass sound typical in the mid 80s & loved by collins (listen to no jacket required). Collins drumming is all live leaving the drum machine alone except for backing rhythm. His complex syncopation is way above par per usual as he's using the typical high tom fills & lots of high-hat. Good tunes are grand illusion, hold on, walk away, & hung up on your love, & holy mother. holy mother was cowritten by clapton's/collins's good friend stephen bishop who couldn't find much commerical success in the mid 80s. The album is good but just didn't give me the chills that behind the sun did. it was overproduced. I usually like phil production but this one was too R&B & not enough rock. but then it was 1986. I thought there was too much going on including too much programming & sequencing. I prefer more live instrumentation. Overall a good album but not as good as BTS. These guys toured in 1986-87 between collins's breaks on his genesis tour(invisible touch tour). Those live shows were great & the recreations of these august tunes were better as they were more stripped down. There are some good DVDs out there including live in birmingham '86 & live at monteaux '86 - both great shows. August would prove to be the end of the Collins/Clapton production era but they would play together on clapton's 1989 journeyman album (bad love - collins on drums) & collins's 1989 but seriously album (wish it would rain down - clapton on guitar). I my opinion their relationship in the mid 80s helped to keep an industry of inmature music respectable by creating mature/complex/articulate music to marvel over.
One of My Favorite Clapton Albums.......2006-05-09
I have all of Eric Clapton's albums, including stuff from his Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek & the Dominoes days, and I have to say "August," "Behind the Sun," and "Journeyman" are the three albums of his I tend to come back to most. "August" is second only to "Journeyman" as the most enjoyable of the three.
I've seen many complaints about Phil Collins's bad influence (pun intended) on the album, but it really doesn't phase me, as I enjoyed "Behind the Sun." The album was released in '86, but the only song that sounds dated to me is the duo with Tina Turner,"Tearing Us Apart." But songs like "It's in the Way that You Use it," "Run," "Holy Mother," and "Miss You," stand out as some of my favorites.
If I recall, "Behind the Sun" (the album before "August") was hailed as somewhat of a comeback album, giving Clapton more of a commercial appeal, and putting him back in the public eye. "August" just extended the winning streak with the hit theme song from "The Color of Money" -- "It's in the Way That You Use it" -- as well as his reworking of "After Midnight" for a beer commercial (was that for Miller Lite?). And he looked every inch the suave guitar god -- styled hair, trimmed beard, and a good fashion sense. Best of all, he seemed to be having fun on stage again, helping to bring this material, as well as his older stuff, to life.
So while "August" isn't "Slowhand" or "461 Ocean Boulevard," it's a nice Clapton 80's time capsule, showing an artist that hit his stride after reinventing himself for a new decade of success.
In the Grand Schemes of Eric Albums, This One Stinks.......2006-03-07
OK--I have to warn you--I am a huge Eric fan. When I was in high school I bought my first Eric Album--a 45 which was "For Your Love" and have purchased every record and CD of his since. Eric Clapton is God. One of the smoothest most tastefull guitarists ever.
This album stinks. It is overproduced pop garbage. To me its like if Van Halen did a standards album. I just never thought of Eric doing pop, and well, he pulled it off, but leave pop to the Babyface's or other slick musicians of this world to do. Ugh.
There are simply no tastey licks, no screaming guitar solos, no inspiration, and no emotion. Of all my Clapton albums, and I have got a ton, this is my least favorite.

AMAZING.......2007-07-11
this is just an awsome album. Barbarian is the best song on it, mostly because of the insanely out of place guitar solo that they amazingly fit into that song without making it sound out of place at all. This album in my opinion is better than the new one which i got at their CD release show at the Chameleon. They are from the same area i am, so that makes me like them even more. my point is just buy the album. you'll love it.

I am not a metalhead. I don't dress in black. I don't list GWAR as one of my favorite bands. I am a fan of good music--that is, music that is good by being complicated, different, beautiful, or otherwise adhering to longstanding rules about what good music is laid out by the critics of the likes of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and so on. The rest of this album's reviews will tell you this is a great album because it's "sweet" or "heavy" or "pumps you up" or the empty quasi-intelligent-sounding moniker "technical". I'm here to tell you that this album is good because the music is good.
All vocals and feeling through listening aside, let's look at the instrumentation. Each song is filled with guitarwork that will leave your head spinning. Instead of relying on the boring drop-D-string pounding with interspersed licks so heavily, ABR's songs are all but driven by complicated riffs the whole song through. How they can play an entire live set filled with songs like this is more than I can comprehend (but I've seen them do it).
The drumming is not the typical double-bass-drum-roll with limited snare and cymbal variety (think As I Lay Dying--which is good, but less complicated). The beats are nothing like anything else. I feel sorry for this drummer's bandmembers trying to figure out how to play with his crazy intricate beats, but I love it. Try to nod your head to any of their songs (those of you who have rythm) and notice that you'll inevitably be off-beat throughout the song because of changing time-signatures!
This album is good not because it gives me something to jump around, kick, scream, and break things to, but because the musicianship is top-of-the-line.
When you're angry, you scream, now that's awesome.......2006-12-04
This album was amazing! But, it's so stupid that they put the entire album in their official website. I really like the song "Speech Impediment", love how it began, love the drumming in this song, and lovethe vocals in this song. The members are so young, and are impressive. this is definetly heavy! "Endoephins" was really brutal, and the drumming was good too. I really love this song!! The drumming in the beginning of "Too Late For Roses" was good too. This band is soooo heavy! I just can't wait for their new album around the early 2007. My favorite songs are tracks 1-5. "Barbarian" is definetly heavy! But, most songs in this album sounded the same, but still the drumming was amazing!! Good job, boys!
THE BEST.......2006-08-17
I never write reviews and felt like I just had to for these guys... this cd is simply amazing. The vocals are perfect, the music rips and is technically interesting but not forced technical, the sound and production is killer, the arrangements are excellent, and the flow and groove are all there. There isn't much singing so if you're looking for the melodic singing - not here - but the vocals fit in perfect... I'd compare these guys to Lamb of God but they're a little different - I think they're more musically interesting but love both bands. Definitely check this out. This is a cd that you can listen to over and over and over and never get tired of. One of my favs for sure.
Clean Quality and a fresh sound.......2006-08-09
I never expected to like another christian band again after listening to Demon Hunter :\ However, these guys are one of the more technical metalcore bands out there, these guys have alot of talent and this is a CD that shouldn't be missed, and don't get put off by the fact that their christian, since it doesn't really matter as long as the music is good ;)
