Since the Jefferson Airplane hail from San Francisco and came of age at the dawn of the psychedelic era, they've been typecast as a psychedelic band. However, one listen to this greatest hits album should dispel that notion and clearly illustrate that here is one angry group of punks. Singer Grace Slick caterwauls, drummer Spencer Dryden crashes all over the place, and the guitars whammy way out of tune. The petulant crackle underneath "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" is obvious. The wacked out energy of "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds" confirms it. I'm not giving this album five stars because it's a perfect compilation, because it isn't. I'm giving it five stars brcause it's got a stellar live version of "Have You Seen The Saucers?" which I stumbled upon completely by accidentm and as far as I know this cd's the only place to find it.

So, while not the best introduction to the band, if you must buy a greatest hits I would buy this one.

This compilation could be the right investment for the buyer who wants only one CD by this band. Featuring their two best known tracks "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" the CD is likely to satisfy the casual buyer.

Containing songs from all their 6 studio albums + a couple of live recordings it gives a pretty good general view of the band's recording career.

It will always be a matter of taste and a subject to discussion which specific tracks ought represent the various albums on a compilation CD.

I think most tracks are well chosen even though I miss great tracks like "Come Up the Years" (Takes Off), "My Best Friend" (Surrealistic Pillow), "Martha" (Baxter's) and "The Good Shepherd" (Volunteers)

The booklet of 8 pages is a complete disappointment; with sparse information on the tracks and only a very brief band biography.

    I happened on this item, recently wanting to buy a "classic" Jefferson Airplane album, and was happy that most of the songs I was looking for were on this CD. The third-party vendor I purchased this item from was very prompt in shipping, and it was a great price and in perfect condition.

    Well, I love Jefferson Airplane, but I think they bunched up all the good songs (favorites) on the first side and the second side I hardly ever listen to. They should have mixed the songs up more thoroughly. My three favorite songs are on the first side back to back: 3/5 of a mile in 10 seconds, white rabbit, and don't you want somebody to love.-Sometin' Kool

        Good introduction to the Airplane for the uninitiated. However, the best compilation I have come across - by far - is a vinyl double-album called Flight Log. Unfortunately it does not seem to be available on CD. If anyone knows anything to the contrary, please drop me a line!
