Amazon.com essential recording
One of the Stones' most beloved albums, 1969's Let It Bleed was a benchmark for several reasons. First, founding guitarist Brian Jones died during the recording process. Second, the Stones take their last significant look at pure blues (Robert Johnson's spooky "Love in Vain") and country ("Country Honk," the two-stepping alter ego of "Honky-Tonk Women") before folding both styles into a cohesive rock & roll vision. Third, it contains some of the band's most eerie hits, such as the flame-enveloped "Gimme Shelter," the drug-reality anthem "Monkey Man," the epic "You Can't Always Get What You Want," and Mick Jagger's menacing "Midnight Rambler." --Steve Knopper
Customer Reviews:
A very strange album-with one all time classic song.......2007-07-20
I bought this album after initially being satisfied that my 3cd Stones' compilation and their later "Jump back" compilation were sufficient for having the best Stones' songs. What changed? I saw Mick Jagger perform solo in Australia many years ago and a guy I went to the concert with got excited when a certain song started to be played [along with the audience]. I asked what it was...thought he said "Jimmy Shelter", which just confused me!
Anyway, when I heard Jagger play that song live, I considered it to be an instant classic. It's started to be played more on Australian commercial FM radio since then, fortunately. And I do remember this song being listed on some internet poll as the Stone's greatest song...a sentiment I have to agree with, or at least share the honour with "Jumpin' Jack Flash". Gimme Shelter just has has a nice subtle guitar sound and male/female vocals which put goosebumps on the back of your neck.
On this album, there is distortion of this song, and I'm guessing that the recording technology was not able to capture the bigness of this song's sound.
So, why only two stars for this album? Firstly, I don't give albums a lot of stars for merely having ONE great song on it. Secondly, like I say in the headline of my review, this album is passing strange-I did NOT expect an album full of blues and country music from a pop/rock group!
It's been a while since I've listened to this album after I bought it recentlylish [some months ago]-so, going on memory, I think that "Country honk" is what WOULD become a compilation staple, Honky Tonk Women. Unfortunately, it is a little too country for me.
This album does have other songs that often make Stones' compilations, but it's just that I don't particularly like those songs! E.g. "You can't always get what you want".
If you've never heard "Gimme Shelter" [which absolutely shines as a song due to the great female vocals in the song], then either buy this album, or the Stones' compilation "Hot Rocks". If you choose to buy this album, however, then make sure you like or are open to blues and country music.
I'm not sure if this album often gets listed as one of the Stones' great albums, but for me it is not that good [this is the only regular Stones' album I have, along with my two compilations comprising 4 cds].
For die hard fans only, I think, though Gimme Shelter is a 5 star song, in my opinion.
OH MY GOD! MAYBE THIS IS THERE BEST ALBUM? ANOTHER MASTERPIECE!.......2007-07-11
Wow! What a line up! As soon as you hear the opening guitar of Gimme Shelter you know your in for something special! I love "Country Honk" How many groups have that kind of balls to not include a classic hit like "Honky Tonk Woman" and do a country version of that song for the album? Most groups could only dream of having enough great material to do something like that! The Stones were at the top of the game between "Beggar's" & "Exile". They managed to put out four of the greatest albums of all time, a fantastic live album(Ya Ya's) and an incredible hits set with Hot Rocks! This is an album that should be in every music lovers collection!
Stones And Guests make a classic........2007-07-05
The Rolling Stones and their guests made a great one with Let it Bleed. Keith is at his best, His song Silver is one of the best. Nicky Hopkins piano at the start of Monkey man is creative.Byron Berlines fiddle makes Country Honk better. Al Kooper plays Frech horn, Piano and Organ on Cant always get what you want. Bobby Keys has a good solo on Live With Me. Ry Cooders mandolin is good on Love In Vain. Mick is great on here his vocals are great and good harmonica on Midnight Rambler.
A another Stones classic.......2007-05-24
Led It Bleed is the follow up to Beggers Banquet and its just as good if not better than Beggers Banquest with its country, blues, and rock music.
Worth it?.......2007-04-29
The album has been reviewed for content excellently on these pages. I will only comment on this New Edition.
I have listened to this album since 1973, and have LP and CD.
Was it worth to buy this Remastered version?
Absolutely. I hear things in the mix that I'd never heard before (even with my older and well-abused ears!).
Same for Aftermath, and Beggars Banquet. There's a new freshness on these re-editions that is simply staggering.
Of course, only if you have listening equipment that can capture these details... But even on my old Quad and Heresy's the difference is amazing.

HIGH VOLTAGE ROCK N ROLL .......2007-06-28
THIS IS ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM FROM AC/DC ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ALBUMS OF THEM EVER RECORDED ONLY OFFICAL LIVE ALBUM WITH BON SCOTT ON VOCALS!!!!!ONCE IN A LIFETIME THIS CONCERT WOULD OF BEEN GREAT GREAT ALBUM ROCK N ROLL HAS NEVER BEEN THIS GOOD YOUR CRAZY IF YOU DONT HAVE ANYTHING FROM THIS ALBUM BUY IT IF YOU STILL DONT HAVE IT!!!!!!
If you want Blood You've got it.......2007-04-10
Early CD by AC/DC and I think one of there best, Angus Young proves once again that he is a guitar god, his guitar solo's in A Whole Lot Of Rosie is superb. If your a AC/DC fan this is a must have.
Bon Scott lives!.......2007-03-21
This is one of my all time favorite albums (yes I have it on vinyl). Bon Scott is in his element and delivers one of the best live performances of all time. A must have for AC/DC fans!
Feels like you were really there.......2007-01-18
Ac/Dc is a very rare breed of band that never lets you down...you always know what to expect, which is great blues based rock at a super high volume with some great guitar playing and some great screaming vocals...this live CD "If You Want Blood" is no exception to that.
It includes 10 great rock and roll classics played live, with lots of crowd participation. What sets this CD apart from their next live album recorded many years later on the "Razor's Edge" tour,is that this feels much more intimate, like you were front row in a small arena right in the middle of the high volume onslaught. I like this, whenever you make a live album that feels like you were there it can be considered a success. The later live album feels much more thought out and commercial and it didn't feel spontanious at all. I much prefer this one,"If You Want Blood"...the band was very hungry for success and was touring for the "Powerage" album...the only complaint I have is that they didn't include a lot of songs that I think would have went over better...in particular Sin City,TnT,Dirty Deeds, and It's A Long Way To The Top...this is a great CD to pop in the car and crank to 10 and imagine being there watching this classic band tearing through some awesome rock and roll...if you are a hard core ac/dc fan you should already have this,if not go out and grab it now...if you are new to the band, buy a few of the studio albums first, mainly Back In Black,Highway To hell,High Voltage, and even Powerage...once you know the songs in the studio versions you'll be able to appreciate the live versions in a whole new way...one song in particular "The Jack" has completely new lyrics live as opposed to the studio version (I prefer the studio version but then again,I like being subtle, but the live version is great too)...this CD also includes the live version of "Whole Lotta Rosie" and one of my favorites "Rock And Roll Damnation"...this is another in a long line of triumphs for this great band and includes a GREAT guitar solo that shows what Angus can do and some great crowd interaction with the great Bon Scott
The Upside - very well produced live album, feels very intimate like you were there..includes some great classics like "Whole Lotta Rosie" "Problem Child" "Rock And Roll Damnation","hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be","High Voltage" and more...great booklet also comes with the remaster version with lots of great pictures and some cool stories
The Downside - missing some obvious hits like "TnT" and "Dirty Deeds" (they included 'Rocker' from the dirty deeds album but not the much more popular title track, not sure why) and "Jailbreak" which would have been a treat to hear Bon sing that one live..and again,no bonus tracks for the remaster version which would have been a nice treat to us fans
The Bottom Line - the best live collection of Ac/Dc songs so far...start with the studio versions and then crank this one up to 10 and relive a great concert...Ac/Dc is timeless and classic...go buy this one...donutman says so!!!
AC/DC - 'If You Want Blood You Got It' (Sony).......2006-11-16
Originally released in 1978,this live album came out after AC/DC had put out four lp's and just prior to 'Highway To Hell'.Ten full-throttled tracks of blistering in-your-face heavy rock&roll as only AC/DC can do it.Used to have the cassette of this lp,but it is great to have it on CD.Was nice to hear Bon Scott-versions of "Rif Raff","Bad Boy Boogie","Problem Child",the awesome "Whole Lotta Rosie"(my favorite of the entire disc),"High Voltage" and "Let There Be Rock" once again.Essential.

It's Only R N R & The Stones Do It So Well.......2007-05-21
Just another solid effort from the Stones with the rockers and ballads. The latest album from them, that I have decided to add to my collection. The classics and the not-so-familiar ones.It has the classics,If You Can't Rock Me,Ain't Too Proud To Beg & It's Only R N R. I have discovered some new ones too.Mainly hearing them from alternate radio. Those are Till The Next Goodbye,Dance Little Sister and If You Really Want To be My Friend, the latter, being my newest discovery. If you want to discover new classics, perhaps this album may be the one for you.it was for me.If you are a Stones fanatic, you probably know them.If you are casual, you will make a major discovery.Buy it and you will not regret it....
solid rock.......2007-05-07
Even though I'm giving this album a 4 rating, it's more like 3.5. I'm totally serious when I say my least two favorite tracks on this album are the title song (which was never interesting to me) and their version of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg". The rest of the album rules, though.
My favorites would be "Luxury" with its beautiful vocal melody, and the more emotional tunes such as "Time Waits for No One" and "If You Really Want to Be My Friend". Also on the album are short catchy little rockers ("Dance Little Sister" and "Short and Curlies"). The album closes with a really good groove rocker called "Fingerprint Files" and I mine as well mention that the album opens with the perfect hard rockin' "If You Can't Rock Me".
Also worth mentioning is that the piano playing throughout the whole album is the main highlight. I love it. It's the best thing about it, in my opinion. This album catches the Stones between going commercial and sticking with their hard rock roots. The whole "caught in between" period is interesting to me.
An album worth owning? Yes.
4 1/2 stars........2007-04-02
This album, like "goats head soup," suffers a bad hand of fate in the chronology of the rolling stones discography. Following closely on the heels of perhaps the greatest recording streak in rock and roll history, the 1968 to 1972 run of "beggars banquet," "let it bleed," and "exile on main street,"this album at first seems a bit weak. But be fair, the perfection of the `68 to `72 years could not last. If removed from the context of its proximity to those masterpieces, "it's only rock and roll," is an outstanding album. "If you can't rock me," "it's only rock `n roll," and "dance little sister," are three excellent rock numbers. "Time waits for no one" is a great, beautiful ballad. The reggae inflections juxtaposed with hard rock power chords on "luxury," equates to a pure piece of fun, and the gritty funk of "Fingerprint file," is another success. Even the seemingly tossed off piece of boogie fluff, "short and curlies," is listenable in its own slightly cheesy way. Throughout the record keith richards and mick taylor provide fine guitar licks, and jaggers vocals are effortly expressive, whether emoting cynicism, aggression, or just plain old swagger. This is a fine and fun rock and roll record. Any band should be proud to have made such a thing. And I would highly recommend that you pick up a copy. Makes a wonderful addition to any household.
Under-rated Stones Album--Give it a Listen.......2007-03-06
This is my favorite Stones album for sheer listening pleasure. It may not be as weighty or as blues-based as some of their other work, but it strikes a chord with me every time I listen to it. The songs are extremely good, with the rich, layered sound found on albums featuring guitar virtuoso Mick Taylor. After Taylor's departure, the Stones' music has a leaner, edgier sound. There's nothing at all wrong with that, but Taylor's melodic ear contributed so much to the Stones' music when he was with them.
'Time Waits for No One' is a masterpiece on many levels, as is 'Till the Next Goodbye', plus the album has the additional classic 'It's Only Rock and Roll". Many of the songs are less known, but are equal to the Stones' great works that preceded and followed this album. There is a nice mix of hard rock, blues, ballad, reggae, and humor.
Sure, the Stones did edgier work, but this one is just plain fun to listen to and never seems to wear out its welcome on my turntable.
Five stars.
Underappreciated, Underrated and Pure Stones.......2006-12-28
Okay, there are a couple fillers, all found on side two: Luxury is a half-serious reggae sendup that really, really sucks; If You Really Want to Be My Friend, an overlong, dull ballad; Dance Little Sister is too repetitive for me, and Short and Curlies is a filler, a failed attempt to recapture the smutty brilliance of songs like Brown Sugar and Let It Bleed. But hey, this is a great album, all things considered, especially considering its predecessor was Goats Head Soup, arguably the Stones' worst ever; everybody's heard the title song, and it rocks; same for Ain't too Proud to Beg, a Tempts cover that's a radio staple; and If You Can't Rock Me, a live favorite. But there's more to this album than those: Till the Next Goodbye has got to be the most underrated Stones song EVER, a melancholy, slightly country-tinged ballad that really deserves more recognition than it gets - same for the whole album, actually. Time Waits for No One has one of my favorite guitar solos ever on it, I'd go out a limb and say it's Mick T's best ever, though there's some stiff competition (Sway, for instance). And Fingerprint File is pretty funky and paranoid, sort of proto-Talking Heads; and those lyrics, man... after Bushie's spying job on so-called "terrorists", they're still relevant today, no?
Okay, this ain't first-rate Stones. But if you've heard the classics, and want more (I couldn't blame you), go here.

Not QUITE classic Coop, but worth a buy.......2007-04-13
Yeah, this is good, and better than the two preceding albums (Pretties for You and Easy Action), but it's not at the level of Killer or Billion Dollar Babies at all. I mean, it's likeable enough, and contains some of their best songs. I'm 18 is my favorite Coop song ever, thanks to the harmonica, guitar, and Coop's insightful but funny lyrics. Caught in a Dream and Long Way to Go are also great, and Hallowed be My Name is good. All of these make this a good purchase for even casual Coop fans such as myself (interestingly, I've heard all of ACG's albums yet consider myself a "casual fan"). But some of this is very, VERY bad. Like Black Juju. It goes on for nine freaking minutes! Okay, I like jamming when in the right hands, and the group sure had the chops to pull it off. But it's just BORING. That's not their strong suit - three minute muscular, riffy, catchy rockers with funny lyrics like, well... I'm 18. And they pull another with Ballad of Dwight Fry, thankfully shorter but still not very good. Second Coming and the concert favorite Is It My Body are just mediocre. Not bad, mind you, but mediocre. They exist merely to exist, and I don't get how Body made it on ACG's Greatest Hits in the place of, say, Caught in a Dream or Long Way to Go.
So this is an average album, with quite a few average songs, but it's not at all bad and has a few tremendous songs other than I'm Eighteen (as well as I'm Eighteen itself, of course). Don't start your Coop collection here - go with either Greatest Hits or Killer. But be sure to pick it up sometime, because Caught in a Dream and Long Way to Go are both very underrated.
Love it to Death Man.......2007-01-02
I remember hearing "Black Juju " and being blown completely away with the atmosophere it created. Alice Cooper has always been for me a larger than life experience. This cd was their turn around in turns of sound. Ezrin made these bad dudes even worse. Every song is a masterpiece and every song, for me,is a picture of my youth painted in the tapestry of the greatest shock rock act to date : Alice Cooper!!!
The Big Break For Alice And The Boys.......2006-12-07
"I'm 18 And I Like It"! With those immortal words that resonated with every 18 year old from 1971 to 2006 the Alice Cooper band became stars. "Love It To Death" was the first album for the band on a major label, and although it has it's flaws the good stuff on this album ranks with the all time best from Alice and the boys. This was also the first album with Bob Ezrin at the production helm. He would prove to be the catalyst for much of Cooper's output for years to come. The album contained two huge singles "18" and "Is It My Body" that still receive tons of classic rock airplay to this day. But the real meat of this album is the two longer pieces. "Black Juju" clocks in at more than 9 minutes and is the blueprint for the many horror epics that would be the Alice's trademark to this day. The band plays it up on this one too, with interesting instrumental passages that set the mood for the dark lyrics. The other truly great track on the album is "The Ballad Of Dwight Fry". This is prime fillet Alice and is still the theatrical centerpiece to his live shows today. In "Fry" Alice firsts discovers his alter ego character which he would refer to in the 3rd person in interview from this point forward. The sight of Alice on stage in a straightjacket singing "I gotta get out of here" still can send shivers up the spine. Two other interesting songs appear on the album both dealing with Christianity. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" (written by Smith) and "Second Coming" (written by Cooper) explore interesting aspects of the subject. The Alice Cooper band was still very much a group project at this time with Bruce, Smith and Dunaway writing as much of the material as Alice. The only two songs that don't do much for me are the opener and closer "Caught In A Dream" and "Sun Arise". The Cooper Band's stage show would really start to develop on this tour as well, with theatrics becoming almost as important to the music. "Love It To Death" is the album that vaulted the band into superstardom and it is worthy of that achievement.
Shock Rock Perfection.......2006-09-15
Is there a better twisted hard rock album in existence? I doubt it. In addition to the instantly memorable melodies performed by the classic Alice Cooper line-up, we get Alice's uniquely weird lyrics to go with them. The songs humorously address such topics as teenage confusion/angst in the Top Forty hit "I'm Eighteen"; the occult in "Black Juju"; Christianity in "Hallowed By My Name" and "Second Coming"; and teen restlessness in the opening track "Caught In A Dream" and "Long Way To Go". This disc had way too much influence on me as a teen. Mental illness ("Ballad of Dwight Fry") seemed so fantastically exotic when Alice was singing about it. Alas, though I'm not as nutty as poor Dwight, I'm not quite right in the head either these days. Long rock songs tend to bore me but "Ballad" and "Black Juju" are perfectly justified in their length. There's not a wasted note in either song. This was the first Alice Cooper album produced by Bob Ezrin. Under his guidance the band really flowered. He would go on to produce the remaining classic Alice Cooper albums "Killer" through "Billion Dollar Babies". Check these out as well- they're almost as good as "Death".
Clearly their best album.......2006-09-04
This is when the band peaked. You had the perfect combination of legitimate rock, bold experimentation and trademark theatrics.
Alice Cooper started out as a band. They first made 2 very novice, "looking to find themselves" albums and then they hit their stride with this one. Subsequent works either went too far towards the theatrical side or focused too much on Alice Cooper the personality.
While not a perfect album in any way, it does summarize the objective of a tough and gritty Detroit band trying to establish yet distinguish themselves among a landscape of the flower power movement. This is not a Led Zep II, CCR, Ziggy Stardust quality album yet it is a very honest and original work from a band that was going to be going places.
"I'm Eighteen". "Is it my Body" "Ballad of Dwight Frye" and "Caught in a Dream" are the highlights. "Sun Arise" is a nice song (I think it was a cover) that you would never expect from this band.
While Alice Cooper, the personality, was of a definite star power quality, I almost think that if the actual band stayed together they may have developed and qualified to become a legit heavyweight rock group on par with other bands from the era
This band would self destruct with "Muscle of Love" just a few years later.

Still Worth 5 Stars.......2007-02-13
How can you not give this five stars? This is great guitar orientated rock even though Andy Parker's cymbals sound awful. I have never tired of playing this album for over thirty years and it is still one of my favourites. There are five classic songs that the band still perform live. "Let it Roll" and "Shoot Shoot" are great heavy rock standards and "Mother Mary" and "This Kid's" are two of the many highlights on the "Strangers" live album. Add to this the wonderful "Out in the Street" and you can forgive the dated production. The whole thing comes packaged up in another magic cover by Hipgnosis for less than a fiver (English pounds folks!) What joy!
Vaudeville carries on..........2007-01-29
UFO had reinvented themselves on their third studio album 'Phenomenon' but they were not quite a great band yet. What they needed to do was to utterly lay to waste their dopey space rock origins and dive bomb into the early metal years. On 'Force It', released in June 1975, the band created the first of their many stellar hard rock albums. With Michael Schenker fighting a language barrier that isolated him from his English bandmates you would think that album #2 would slip in quality but in fact 'Force It' leaves it in the dust. The songs are amazing and the classics are true classics, just as "Doctor, Doctor" and "Rock Bottom" are. The record kicks off with "Let It Roll", an absolute loud and obnoxious monster which begins with Michael's trademark sustained tone and launched into riffs galore!. "Shoot Shoot" is probably my alltime favorite UFO song, good boy meets bad woman and pays the price, the song is a masterful, commercial hard rock song! Even the ballads are outstanding including "Out in the Street" which includes another amazing lead break from Mr. Schenker plus a great emotional vocal from Phil Mogg. The lyrical quality of many of these songs is also a huge step above what the band had accomplished thus far. "Love Lost Love" is much is the same vein as "Shoot" with great guitar melody and chorus, "Mother Mary" (a riff monster in the tradition of Sabbath) and "This Kid's", the album closer and set favorite (like about half the songs here) are intense with their crunch and strut. Quiet times "High Flyer" and "Between the Walls" take nothing away from the sonic brilliance of this amazing record. Easily my favorite UFO disc and probably the most unsung great album in the history of seventies heavy metal. By the way, love how the remastered version put a t-shirt on the girl, my version has the faded picture where she is obviously nude. All in good taste and fun!
A must have for the real Rock Collector........2007-01-08
Ufo has had many ups and downs. And in a way it has made them who they are now. Like a great wine they just keep getting better with age. Released in 1975 "Force It" had the bands lineup with Phil Mogg - Vocals, Andy Parker - Drums, Pete Way - Bass, Michael Schenker - Guitars, and Chick Churchill - Guest on Keyboard.
1. Let It Rock
2. Shoot Shoot
3. High Flyer
4. Love Lost Love
5. Out In The Street
6. Mother Mary
7. Too Much Of Nothing
8. Dance Your Life Away
9. This Kid's (Including Between The Walls.)
You can't go wrong with a CD by UFO if you are into this style of hard rock.
Good hard rock album.......2007-01-03
This is a really good album to listen to , it has a mix between hard rock tunes with good vocal melodies. The song that blew my mind is Mother Mary it sounds very modern . Just try and buy this album!!!!
Rubba dub dub, two half naked people in a tub.........2006-05-11
When I first bought this on vinyl some twenty years ago, I was not too impressed with it. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because I loved ' Phenomenon ' so much and was disappointed that it didn't sound more like that album. Maybe it's because most of the songs didn't catch on at first listen. Maybe it was the song titles, which I don't think rank amongst their best. Whatever the case was, I remember not liking it that much and foolishly traded it away. Some twenty years later, I bought this on CD and now realize how wrong I first was about this album.
Yeah, the songs are not as immediately likable as the tunes from ' Phenomenon ' and the high points aren't as high, but taken on it's own terms, this is a great album. Tunes that didn't catch my ear at first, like the two opening hard rockers, ' Let It Roll ' and 'Shoot Shoot ', I now absolutely love and tunes that I liked the first time around, such as the ballad ' High Flyer ' and the crunchy hard rocker ' Mother Mary ' , I like even more now. This is certainly a more aggressive and heavier album than it's predecessor, but it's also more diverse in terms of material. Keyboards, courtesy of Ten Years After keyboardist Chick Churchill, make their first appearance on a UFO album and definitely add, as opposed to subtract, from the overall sound. The keyboards are at their most effective on the album's closing track, ' This Kid's (including ' Between The Walls '), particularly during the last two and a half minutes. At the moment, this is my favorite song on the album. It fades out with some mournful sounding church (or ' Churchill '!) organ, leaving me wanting more, which is a nice way to end on album.
Catchy guitar riffs, singalongable vocal melodies AND guitar solos are in abundance throughout the album, even on what I think are some of the album's weaker cuts such as ' Dance Your Life Away ' and ' Love Lost Love '. Oh yes, and I almost forgot to mention Pete Way's ' Too Much Of Nothing ', which has a very early Alice Cooper-like bass and drum section in the middle. Oh yes..again..I like Andy Parker's very solid drumming on ' Shoot Shoot '. See, there is a bunch to like on ' Force It '! You should buy it!

Very Under-Rated.......2007-07-16
The Who gets credit in my book just for keeping the band going after Keith Moon's death, who in my opinion is the most under-rated drummer in rock's history. "Its Hard" is a very under-rated album, with eight of the twelve (original) tracks that are very good songs. This also contains my all time favorite "Who" song and favorite rock song of all time which is "EF" (I love it so much but I cant spell it..)Athena is another great song, as for the more unknown of "Its your turn" and "I known no War" which scream at you just like the "Who" of old. For the price, this is an easy choice. I am sure you will enjoy it, espically if you are a "Who" fanatic like myself..ENJOY
As bad as its reputation suggests...........2007-07-14
I can understand why Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey made Endless Wire. They didn't want this album to be remembered as The Who's last studio album (which, until recently, it was). Rarely has an album sounded so tired, weary, and perfunctory. Aside from the terrible title and cover, there are only 4 songs worth mentioning here. The starter, Athena, is a good song, with a pretty decent drum workout by Kenney Jones (who is unfairly maligned in the eyes of Who fans). The song One at a Time is pretty rocking, and the final song, Cry if You Want, is reminiscent of One at a Time, except Cry has better lyrics. The only classic here is Eminence Front, a great Who song and the only one in which the band seems to really believe in. Entwistle's songs, the title track, and Cook's County are the worst songs here, and the others are completely forgettable. The previous album, Face Dances, is much better than this one. Don't even bother with this one.
An accurate title, I must say.......2007-06-21
This is the worst Who album. I don't like Who Are You, but this makes it look like Who's Next. A sad way for the Who to leave (though it was only a temporary exit of course).
Now, there are two classics here: the hit Eminence Front is a radio staple, and why not? Have you heard that guitar solo? Athena is next in a long line of Townshend's perfect pop songs.
So, onto the rest of this sludge. John was usually a reliable second songwriter (Boris the Spider! Whiskey Man! Heaven and Hell! My Wife! Success Story! You!), but he chokes on this one. Dangerous, It's Your Turn and One at a Time. Bang, bang, bang. He makes a mockery out of himself three times. Nice job. As for Big Nose Guy, he was in an anti-war mood, and while I normally like anti-war songs, the world would be a better place without I've Known No War or Cook's Country. And what's up with the title song? A faceless, stomping MOR rocker with Roger doing the country-singer impression during the choruses. The remaining songs (One Life's Enough, Cry If You Want, A Man is A Man) all take on Townshend's personal problems, only they're not honest or sincere, unlike similar songs on The Who By Numbers, so that defeats the purpose of their existence.
So this is how the Who Mach II sputter out, is it? Of course, no Keith Moon's part of the problem, but Face Dances worked out fine without him. No Moonie, no songwriting, and sadly, this was The Ox's last studio album with the Who. RIP John!

One of The Who's Most Underrated Albums.......2007-05-09
After the lackluster Face Dances, The Who rebounded a year later with It's Hard, an underrated album in The Who canon. When It's Hard was released in 1982, Rolling Stone Magazine gave it a five star review and hailed "I've Known No War" as the "Won't Get Fooled Again" of the 1980s. Yes, it's the stand out track of the album and the third in a trilogy of Who anthems, the other two being "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Who Are You." Listen to these three songs in a row and you'll see what I mean. The basic song structure is the same, with a break in the middle followed by a loud vocal scream by Daltrey. "I've Known No War" is the weakest of the three. In the middle section, you think there's going to be a guitar solo - but it never comes. Still, "I've Known No War" is a worthy entry in The Who epic song trilogy.
Another highlight is "Eminence Front." Wow. What can I say about this song that hasn't already been said? Superb! "Cook's County" and the studio version of "It's Hard" are the only weak songs here. "Cook's County" is good intentioned, but just doesn't go anywhere and the live version of the title track out rocks the studio version big time. It's Hard is definitely better than Face Dances. Pete's song writing improved alot. There's nothing on here as bad as "Cache Cache," which may be The Who's worst song (yes, worse than "Cobwebs and Strange") and Glyn Johns was back to produce, giving the album a rocking energy that Face Dances didn't have. In fact, It's Hard almost outshines the Who Are You album from '78. Almost. As for the album cover, I love how it updates Tommy to the 1980s (the boy has moved on from pinball machines to arcade games).
Not quite as great as Who Are You, but greater than Face Dances, It's Hard is not as bad as many say. Had it come after Who Are You, it would've been more well received. ***1/2.
Not their best album.......2007-04-11
Though The Who is and always has been my favorite band, I have to say, this particular recording is a bit of a let-down. Honestly, four words surmise how I feel about this cd: It needs Keith Moon.

Great KISS all around........2007-06-20

Let's Just Be Glad for The Time Together..........2007-06-02
Great record. It's funny on this one because I notice that even though the make-up is off, Gene is still in his demonic character with songs like "Fits Like a Glove" and "Not for the Innocent". This trend, unfortunately, would not continue for Gene. Paul grooves really well and I think he really felt liberated without the make-up with the title track, "Exciter" and Eric's "All Hell's Breakin' Loose". This album sounds to me similar to Creatures of the Night, but it's a little more metallic and friendly with catchy choruses. Great playing from Eric Carr again drives the album and the band to rock harder. And let's not forget Vinnie Vincent who co-wrote 8 songs on here. He was a major contributor even though later he went nuts. If the original band couldn't stay together, and the make-up wasn't working anymore, this album and image proved to be the right move.
EXCITER!.......2007-03-11
The band called Kiss has made many great songs. The song "Exciter" is my personal favorite. I like the first 5 songs on this CD and I don't really care much for the last 5. Five good songs on one CD isn't too common which makes this CD worth buying if you like 80's metal and you don't already own it.
Very Good.......2007-01-05
I'd say that this album gets very good reviews. The album has a few filler tracks on it, but that can be ignored. This is the first studio album by KISS without their makeup, but it's still part of their unfocused period. It's also the last studio album with Vinnie Vincent playing lead. The band was tired of his attitude, so they fired him. When they found that they had nobody to fill in for the tour, they had to rehire him! After the tour was over, they fired him/let him go due to problems with his contract. Although Vinnie Vincent wouldn't play lead with KISS anymore, he returned as a songwriter for the "Revenge" album.
2nd best KISS album of the 80's.......2006-04-27
THE BAND: Gene Simmons (bass), Paul Stanley (guitars), Eric Carr (drums & percussion), Vinnie Vincent (guitars).
THE DISC: Released Sept 1983. Recorded at Right Track Studios, NYC. 10 songs clocking in at approximately 42 minutes. The band's first album without make-up as the front cover proves. This remastered edition was released in 1998 on Mercury's label. Much improved sound in my book (deeper bass guitars and crisper highs). Included with the disc is a 6-page booklet containing song titles and times, writing credits, song lyrics and thank you's. Underneath the disc on the inside cover, there's an informative 5 paragraph history of what the band was going through at the time.
COMMENTS: One word - REBIRTH... new songs, new band members, new manager, new look (no make-up). Kiss' best albums were clearly behind them, but "Lick It Up" proves to be a decent album over all. Especially if you consider all the other albums that the band released in the 80's that were average at best. The band was definitely trying to find the groove after Ace Frehley and Peter Criss departed, and lackluster album sales from "Unmasked", "Music From The Elder" and "Creatures Of The Night". If I had to rank Kiss' albums of the 80's - my favorite (easily) is "Creatures Of The Night". This "Lick It Up" is a distant 2nd; and all the others are 3rd. Track 1 starts right where "Creatures" ended... "Exciter" is probably my favorite tune on the disc - some great rhythm guitar work and wonderful singing from Paul. "Lick It Up" and "All Hell's Breakin' Loose" were the two hits, but not necessarily the best tunes here. I always felt the title track was too repetitive (for the record, they say "Lick It Up" 32 times in the song). My 2nd favorite song is Paul's "A Million To One" - a great slower tune. Once again, I feel Paul's songs are lyrically far superior to Gene's. Simmons continues to write songs with a cheap feel to it, i.e. "Young & Wasted", "Fits Like A Glove", "Dance All Over Your Face". Vinnie Vincent proved so much more than just another session guitarist on "Lick It Up". Where Paul co-wrote 5 songs; Gene 6 songs; and Vinnie co-wrote 8 songs. Vincent's guitar solos are for the most part premeditated, but he lets loose and shreds on "Young And Wasted" and "Gimme More". It's a shame egos and attitudes got in the way and Vincent's time with the band was short lived (1 album only). Eric Carr (R.I.P.) proves to be an accomplished drummer - and more complex and capable than Peter Criss ever was. Not a strike against Criss, but if you were ever able to sit them down together to hear them play, I'd choose Carr 9 times out of 10. Carr's drumming, like it was on "Creatures" is thundering. Though far from Kiss' best album, "Lick It Up" is an absolute essential disc in the Kiss catalog (3.5 stars).

Karen Dalton was one of the ultimate free spirits. Arriving in New York from her native Oklahoma in 1960, she immediately became a part of the rising folk scene there, a hippie before they had a name, someone who lived life completely on her own terms. She was also, as this records shows, a superbly talented singer, eerily reminiscent of Billie Holliday. The only problem was that she disliked performing, and, in fact, had to be coaxed to make this album in the late '60s. Fortunately, the recording went very smoothly, with most of the vocals being first takes. Dalton (who died in the early '90s) had a natural feel for the blues. She could take songs by her contemporaries, even old folk songs, and find the blues inherent in them. It remains a mystery, really, why a record this good was lost among the releases of the time; its power might have been simple, but it was undeniable. Dalton did record again, making one other album. Now that we have the joy of It's So Hard to Tell, perhaps someone will see fit to issue that, too, and make our legacy complete. It's just a shame we've come to them so late. This is the real folk blues. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
What a great voice . . . .......2006-12-22
As legend has it, it took quite a bit of convincing to get Karen Dalton into the studio to record this album, and it was a spur-of-the-moment decision. Consequently, the arrangements are loose and the accompaniment is not varied much--Dalton's 12-string (don't hear any banjo, despite what the liner notes say), a guitar or two playing lead, spare percussion, and some bass are mostly the extent of the backing instruments. Fortunately, the focus is on Karen's voice, which is a real pearl. No one else really sounded like her before or since, and although this album isn't very polished, it's invaluable as one of the only two studio recordings of Karen ever made.
Although Karen played a whole lot of folk, most of these songs are blues, and some of the writing is great. Two Fred Neil cuts are highlights--"Little Bit of Rain" and "Blues on the Ceiling." "Ribbon Bow" is a great brooding traditional tune. The title track and "Right Wrong or Ready" are also highlights. Really what ties the set together is Karen's voice--if you haven't heard it, it's pretty tough to describe it. It's so complex, involving a strained breath at the beginning of words, a kind of southern-accent nasal pronunciation of sounds, and a really guttural, emotive undertone. Some people are annoyed by her voice, but I recommend giving it a chance--it's a shame to write off such a complex gem of originality for sounding a bit uncommon. With her unique vocal tools, Dalton wrings the emotion, pain and life out of these songs. Even though she didn't write them, with such impressive readings, it doesn't really matter.
Of the two albums Karen Dalton recorded, this is far and away the lesser jewel. Its faults are rooted in the off-the-cuff way it was recorded: most of the backing instrument parts don't add very much to the songs, and since it was essentially a jam session, the playing is almost frustratingly tentative--the guitars sound like they're just playing to fill the space and end up just noodling. For me, this makes the overall feel of the album downbeat and more mellow than it may have sounded with better arrangements and preparation, or if it was just Dalton and her guitar. As it is, the songs kind of float by and all sound very similar.
I recommend this album, but I recommend you buy Dalton's second, recently reissued album In My Own Time. It's production is polar opposite--much slicker (but not overly so), much more interesting and impressive accompaniment, and everything sounds better-prepared. Additionally, the song choice is much more varied--blues and folk are accompanied by R&B, rock, jazzier numbers and more pop/rock sounding numbers. I think it may be easier to fall in love with Karen's voice starting with her second album, and once you've gotten into it is the time to check this one out. It's a fine document and showcase for her voice and it supplements the better thought-out In My Own Time. I hope you enjoy both albums!
Mellow blues..........2006-11-07
I wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased this CD, although I was somewhat prepared for Karen Dalton's voice after reading several of the reviews that compared her to Billie Holliday. Her delivery also struck me as similar to Nina Simone and Esther Phillips, definitely didn't sound like a white woman to me. Her voice is one that almost makes you ache just hearing it, she doesn't sing any upbeat tunes on this disc. I was surprised to hear that most of the vocals on this album were first takes, apparently the engineer recorded her rehearsals of the songs to get a more spontaneous feel for the album. Just goes to show you that this woman didn't play around, she sang from her heart every time. Her use of acoustic instruments throughout the CD enhances the mellow feel of the songs, one of which was written by her friend Fred Neil. Her version of his "Blues On The Ceiling" is markedly different from Neil's version on the album "Bleeker and McDougal". My favorite song off of this CD is probably her version of Tim Hardin's "How Did The Feeling Feel to You?" The liner notes give a somewhat spotty history of her life but emphasize the fact that Karen Dalton loved playing music for fun but hated having to perform shows, which explains why her music never took off. The liner notes also implied that drug and alcohol abuse may have been a factor, but who knows. If you are a fan of the blues you should hear this underappreciated singer. She definitely had talent and made music for the right reasons. After hearing this CD I am eagerly awaiting the re-release of her second album and will definitely get a copy of that too.

karen dalton is one of my favorite woman singers. her soulful voice is reminiscent of billie holiday, and her words are true. everyone can understand her perspective, and she will make you cry or smile or both. she is one of those musicians who didn't want the attention--she made this music because she had to. she knew dylan, but she stayed behind the fame she could have easily taken. if you want a new album to make you really happy that music exists, here it is....
Karen Dalton's other album.......2005-01-30
Her best album was "In My Own Time" released around 1968 by Paramount. The cassette was PAC-6008. It was produced by Harvey Brooks and recorded at Bearsville and Mercury sound studios. The tracks were:
Something On Your Mind
When A Man Loves A Woman
In My Own Dream
Katie Cruel
How Sweet It Is
In A Station
Take Me
Same Old Man
One Night Of Love
Are You Leaving For The Country
I have the cassette tape, but it isin poor condition. I would like to buy the LP (if in A condition), or get mp3 or ogg copies of the tracks.

The popular aphorism that "there are no second acts in America" has been contradicted by the surprising reincarnation of the Allman Brothers Band after highway deaths, drug trials and artistic lethargy hammered more than one nail in the group's coffin. After breaking up in '81, the four surviving original members, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, reunited for a 20th anniversary tour in 1989. The results were so unexpectedly good that the band decided to stick together and have released their fourth post-reunion album, Where It All Began. Why did the Allmans' reunion succeed where so many rock and roll reunions have flopped? The Allmans' concept hasn't changed, but like the jazz and blues legends they admire, they play a little differently each time. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
A great album from a great band........2007-07-04
I can only echoe the sentiments of the previous reviewers. This is really a fantastic album from a fantastic band. All of these songs sound like the logical follow up to the great 70's classic albums the band has released.
For me, the song that really shines on this album is change my way of living. It is a song that I listened to off and on and one day it hit me. I could not stop listening to that song. The slide work is phenomenal. This album shows what an integral part of the band Dickey is. I saw AB a couple of years ago without Dickey and it was like seeing half the band. Don't get me wrong, There are enough Greg Allman songs to make a great show, but the show would have been better with DB there.
If you like the Allman Brothers you will like this album. I recommend it highly.
Aging gracefully...........2007-06-23
This is another brilliant album from the Allmans after their amazing comeback in 1989 with Seven Turns. It's fantastic that Seven Turns, Shades of Two Worlds, and this album are as great as they are. Many bands who reunite do so just for the cash, and put out mediocre work (Crosby, Stills, and Nash put out a rash of crappy albums in the 1980's while touring). The Allman Brothers Band seem to have more on their plate, and the 3 albums after the reunion are amongst the best in their career. My favorite here is the title track, which boasts 2 amazing solo by Betts and Haynes. I would also like to give a shout out to Marcos Quinones, the percussionist who was added on Shades of Two Worlds, and here is credited as a full time band member. His work really enhances this album beautifully. This is a huge group effort, with Gregg writing or co-writing more songs than usual. The band sounds like they haven't aged a bit. They're still kicking, and are probably going to kick for a long time.
Another Strong One.......2007-01-25
The Allmans continue their comeback with another strong album from the mid-90. Overall I don't find this album quite as strong as "Shades", but it is another solid effort from the band. Highlights include the 10 minute title track written by Dickey Betts. I also like "No One Left To Run With" by Greg Allman. It has a Bo Diddly riff and lyrics that just about anyone over the age of 40 can relate to. The rest of the album is pretty much vintage Allmans blues rock. Not a bad song in the bunch, but not a lot that really stands out either.
Back in good form - 5 star effort.......2006-03-08
I found this cd in a used shop and got it for only 5 bucks! What a great deal!! This is not The Fillmore Concerts or Eat a Peach but it delivers. The title track is a real stand out. And 'Nobody Left to Run With' is a fantastic song that got some airplay. Both of these songs do what the brothers do so well - create a mood. In this case the mood is a very good one. There's a lot of joy on this entire album. I love it all the way through.
great depth and beauty.......2005-10-11
This is a highly under-rated album, suprisingly. Yeah, the production is itself somewhat understated and mellowed, but there is great depth and beauty in it. A great line up and altogether a great album that I highly recommend.

Georgia Satelites.......2007-01-13
A very fun, enjoyable, rocking CD. For those into Southern Rock(esp. 'old' Southern Rock) you'll enjoy listening to this CD. It brought back memories for me of when I was younger.
If you like Webb Wilder or Jason and the Scorchers, or Cheap Trick, you'll love these guys!.......2006-06-07
Outstanding 20 cut sollection of
a band that has undergone many per-
sonnel changes over the years. I saw
them live twice here in Virginia and
they are very good, though they didn't
have the original memebers still, then.
Pick Up On It!
KEEP THIS ONE FOR YOURSELF!.......2005-11-18
One of Southern Rock's last gritty, greasy great gasps, these guys kicked more hiney than a high school football coach, letting fly with a raunchy, raspy ROCK 'N ROLL attitude flecked with country, blues, and bar band boogie. Helmed by bad boy belter/geetar slinger Dan Baird, the Satellites had it all... brontosaurus chops, snotty swagger, AND a sense of humor (which never hurt NOBODY nohow in the music biz). Monster hit KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF sets the piledriver pace for this career roundup appropriately named after one of Chuck Berry's most tread upon pieces (Bob Seger's good, but he ain't THIS good!). Crash 'n burn covers (HIPPY HIPPY SHAKE, originally written and performed by Chan Romero, Caesar's son), Ringo's DON'T PASS ME BY (one of but two Beatles tunes he penned), and a party perfect John Fogerty medley of ALMOST SATURDAY NIGHT/ROCKIN' ALL OVER THE WORLD blend seamlessly with Baird's bare bones double entendre OPEN ALL NIGHT and the bloozey ALL OVER BUT THE CRYIN'. Cranked to an especially high thrash threshold is Terry Anderson's BATTLESHIP CHAINS, not quite three minutes of rock so primitive I'm surprised Fred and Barney didn't write it. Love it loud? Need it nasty? Crave it crazy? Trust me. The Georgia Satellites will put you into orbit! RATING: FIVE BEER BLASTS
****1/2 - superb!.......2004-06-26
This excellent 20-disc compilation gathers almost all the best from the Georgia Satellites three studio albums. I picked it up some ten or twelve years ago on a whim, knowing little or nothing about the Satallites, but I loved it straight away, and I still take it out and play it from time to time.
Equal parts Chuck Berry and AC/DC, the Satellites played rough, tough and gritty rock n' roll, joyous three chords romps with lots of firepower and the gap-toothed Dan Baird in front alongside lead guitarist Rick Richards.
Their debut album, which featured the hit single "Keep Your Hands To Yourself", got lost amid the pop metal of the mid-eighties, and the next two ones sank without a trace, which is a real shame, because the Satellites did what very few other bands could or would in the 1980s - they played real rock n' roll.
And there are plenty of highlight here. From "The Georgia Satellites" come the tough-as-nails hard rock of "Can't Stand The Pain" and the Hindu Love Gods' "Battleship Chains", and the album "Open All Night" provides songs like "Mon Cheri" and a supremely gritty rendition of Ringo Starr's "Don't Pass My By".
"In The Land Of Salvation And Sin", the Satellites' last album, was more stylistically diverse than its two predecessors, and the acoustic shuffle "Another Chance" is one of the group's best songs...all four musicians sing, and Baird's lyrics are some of his best ever.
"Let It Rock" also includes a few non-album tracks, like the title track (a live rendition of the Chuck Berry-number), and a fine medley of John Fogerty's mid-70s classics "Almost Saturday Night" and "Rockin' All Over The World", and a nice little essay by Jimmy Guterman.
This is a near-perfect introduction to an often overlooked little rock n' roll combo which deserved better.
Good compilation!.......2004-04-29
This is a good compliation of the Satellites. But where you need to start is with "In The Land of Salvation and Sin" record and go from there. That is an all time classic of rock and roll. This has tastes from that record, but you need more than an appetizer!
