Perhaps it's the color scheme and imagery on the slipcase art for Live at the Gorge, recalling Roger Dean's classic 1970s-era album jackets, but this 7-disc set of live Pearl Jam feels warmly retro. Fans will concur, of course, since the 100 tracks favor Ten and Vs. And let's not kid ourselves, it'll be mostly committed fans that buy Gorge, given the sprawl and the fact that several tunes appear three times. That fact alone is retro: Fans buy live albums; generalists stay away. What fans will get--and generalists miss--here is an old-school, road-proved rock throwdown, from start to finish. Eddie Vedder's connection to fans is palpable in the between-song chatter and the Brit-style sing-a-longs (not to mention the Tom Petty goading he has going strong on the 2005 gig or the two appearances of Petty's "I Won't Back Down"). The general soundscape goes like this: The 2005 set is somber and slow-to-build, with its highlight in "I Believe in Miracles" as a show-opener. The 2006 discs, all four of them, are heated and gritty, with the final show's opening, "Severed Hand," providing a great vantage point into Pearl Jam's version of what Keith Richards calls "guitar weaving." It was a sweltering day at the Gorge (in George, Washington, no less), and the music embodies the heat. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BEST LIVE PJ SET EVER!!.......2007-07-18

Pearl Jam is one of my favorite bands, I own all of their studio albums and believe few bands have the talents and range of this band. The problem with most of PJs "bootlegs" is the sound quality. This set finally delivers excellent sound and shows Pearl Jam in their world, live, where they make other current rock acts like "nickelback" look like children's music.
This is a must buy for any Pearl Jam fan... my single complaint is thier are nor liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Pearl Jam rewards their fans again.......2007-07-13

Pearl Jam is the most important band to emerge in the early 90's and really the only one that has stood the test of time. That is a huge testament to quality of their music, and the best showcase for their music has always been their live performances. Fortunately for us fans, a few years ago the band decided to start releasing their live performances and ever since we have had a wealth of live Pearl Jam to enjoy. Some fans may have already downloaded one or more of the shows included in this set (as I had), but this box set still remains a worthwhile investment, even if you have downloaded the shows. It provides that tactile feel that is missing from downloaded music (although kudos to PJ for including pictures and artwork with the downloads). Plus the sound quality tends to be better. The packaging is similar to the 03 bootlegs with tri-fold cardboard cases containing each of the three shows. The artwork is nice, with the outer covers giving a sense of the natural environment of the Gorge, with the inside containing what appear to be images of the Gorge under construction (?).

The 05 show is contained on Discs 1 - 3. Disc 1 is an acoustic set, similar to the Mansfield set from 03. This particular set list is not as strong as the Mansfield acoustic set, but is still enjoyable and includes Hard to Imagine. Discs 2 and 3 contain the remainder of the show, and a number of rarities including Alone, Sad and Undone. Other notable songs include Dissident, MFC, Not for You, and In My Tree. The only downside of this show is that the attempts to annoy Tom Petty occasionally take away from the music, in my opinion.

Discs 4 and 5 contain the first 06 show and this show is the highlight of the entire box set. A great set list is highlighted by Wash, great performances of Corduroy and Hail Hail, Down, Daughter/It's OK, and Blood. But it is the first encore (Disc 5) that really shines. The band plays through Footsteps, Once, Alive, State of Love and Trust, Crown of Thorns, Leash and Porch without stopping. This is a real treat for fans of older Pearl Jam as these are all classics - but the best is yet to come when they play the rarely played Dirty Frank in the closing set.

Discs 6 and 7 contain the second 06 show and again fans are treated to some gems including God's Dice, In Hiding, Green Disease, Betterman/Save it for Later, the re-worked Garden, Rats, and Whipping. They close with Yellow Ledbetter, to which Mike adds the Star Spangled Banner. Those familiar with the 06 tour know that Mike frequently played the Star Spangled Banner during Yellow Ledbetter, and together with Eddie's vaguely anti-war lyrics, this classic song has taken on a whole new meaning, one that is especially relevant given the current state of affairs in the world.

In summary, Pearl Jam continues to reward their fans by making their live shows available, in one format or another, for reasonable prices. This set is no exception and it highlights the greatest band doing what they do best. A great mix of classic songs, new versions of songs, and rare songs make this set especially attractive. This is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Live Shows.......2007-07-10

Pearl Jam have put out so many live records/bootlegs its hard to even count, but these 3 shows from the Gorge will always be considered to be some of their best. I know many PJ fans say these shows were in the top 5 best shows of the bands 2006 tour. Thats saying something because the band is 95% of the time just flat out incredible live. Im sure people have their own opinions about which of these shows was the best. I can just say that if you love their music or are wanting to get into the bands music this is the best place to start. The band sounds so fresh and energetic here. The whole box set sounds amazing and was remastered very well with everything sounding VERY crisp and clean. The setlists cover a wide variety of songs that are just played perfect for the most part. There are very few mistakes or flub ups made by the band during these shows. There is actually only about 3 or 4 that really stick out and with 3 whole shows clocking in over 7 hours that aint bad. The band was most certainly tight during those shows.

The first show recorded on September 1st 2005, not September 5th like the box says, is the second best show of the set in my eyes. The first disc of this show is just incredible and is worth 40 bucks alone. The band opens up with I Believe In Miracles. Ive NEVER heard a version of this song I liked better. Its really the best Ive ever heard, not to mention a lot of other PJ fans can agree. The takes on Low Light, I Am Mine, Crazy Mary, and Black are also some of the best Ive heard. When I was listening to Black on that disc I actually cried! Ive heard the song hundreds of times, but that version did it for me. The only mistake on this disc is where Eddie messes up the lyrics on Off He Goes, but its forgivable and he just laughs it off. I cant forget the awesome version of Hard To Imagine. The band doesnt play this one much, so its certainly a huge plus. Eds voice has never sounded better. Whoever thinks Ed Vedder has lost his pipes should listen to this. The second disc starts off with the only version of Given To Fly I even listen to. I think the song is overplayed, but this one has the energy like no other. Other stong takes on this disc are Last Exit, Save You, Alone, Sad, Not For You, Dissident, and Undone. Some of those songs are hard to come by live and they are played perfect. Ed messes up on Do The Evolution and Insignificance, but I believe he just got too excited. Disc 3 also has a few good versions of Love Boat Captain, Last Kiss, and Blood. Theres the version of I Wont Back Down thats a little rusty, but is played better on the third show of the box set. The September 1st show was a great one. Really an all around perfect live performance.

The second show recorded on July 22nd 2006 is my personal favorite out of the entire box set. It makes my top 10 favorite PJ shows for sure. The setlist, the energy, and the whole vibe is just WOW. Not to mention the show opens up with a killer take on Wash. I havent got the room to type all the great versions on this show because nearly all are great! The ones that stick out the most as being special are Hail Hail, Severed Hand, Unemployable, Black, Insignificance, Life Wasted, and Blood on the first disc. The second disc is the real treat in my eyes. So many awesome songs that are played perfect. Once, Alive now Ed can certainly belt this one out, State of Love and Trust played so sweetly, Leash, Porch, Inside Job, and Go are all just mind blowingly excellent. The performance of Last Kiss is most likely the best Ive heard... ever. I usually dont like the song live, but its really good here. I didnt list Footsteps because this version is in a league of its own. My God, Ed has never sung the song better. It sends little chills through my whole body. Cant forget Dirty Frank, this song isnt played much at all. Its really cool to hear this live. Ed can still sing it good too. This show is just fantastic anyway you can look at it.

The last show from the Gorge Box Set is my least favorite, but is by no means anywhere near bad. Its still incredible, but compared with the other two shows it lacks. The first disc is the best of this show. I love opening up with Severed Hand. Other really great versions are In Hiding where Eds voice sounds great, Marker In The Sand, and Army Reserve sounds better here than on the studio version. This discs last 5 songs are just pure intense energy. Its so good to hear Garden, Jeremy, and Why Go played with so much energy and raw passion. Garden sounds better here than on the studio version for sure. Its another song where Ed sounds better now than he ever has. I cant believe people say the band sounded better in the early 90s. They sound better here to me. The second disc has good takes on Life Wasted, Big Wave, Satans Bed, Alive, and a wicked version of Crazy Mary. So this show can really hold its ground as being awesome too.

If you read all this Im sorry its long, but with 7 whole discs of music theres a lot to cover. I highly recommend this set to anyone who likes rock music or is just a casual PJ fan. You cant beat 7 discs for 40 bucks. This set just shows how great this band is, how talented, and how hard these boys still rock. God, I wish I could have been a teen in the 90s to hear them!

5 out of 5 stars Classic live box, must have it..........2007-07-10

Well it's hard to say something bad about this boxset because it's perfect. You get more than 7 hours of live rock music for only $40, great setlists and many rarities.

Sept. 1st 2005
One show = 36 songs, what to say. On first 3 cd's you can find classic songs like "Black", "Small Town", "Even Flow", "Daughter", "State of Love and Trust", "Alive", "Last Kiss", "Betterman", "Yellow Ledbetter"... and many rarities like "Man of the Hour", "Hard to Imagine", "Alone", "Undone", "Crown of Thorns", "Sad"... plus they played 3 great covers "I Believe in Miracles" (Ramones), "I Won't Back Down" (Tom Petty) and "Baba O'Riley" (Who). They also played "Love Boat Captain", song written after Roskilde tragedy in 2000.

July 22nd & 23rd 2006
Last two shows on American Tour in 2006. On these 4 cd's you can hear almost the whole new album they had released in 2006 (selftitled album "Pearl Jam"). Again, like in 2005 they played many rarities like "Mamasan Trilogy" (Footsteps, Once, Alive), "Leash", "Dirty Frank", "Wash", "Down", "God's Dice", "In Hiding", "Garden", "Rats", Jimi Hendrix "Little Wing" and Neil Young "Rockin' in the Free World" and "F*ckin' up" plus many classics...

After all, if you decide to buy this box, trust me, you won't regret because this box is a piece of art.

Notice: tracklisting on Amazon is incorrect:
Sept. 1st 2005: 1st cd has 9 songs, 2nd cd has 17 songs, 3rd cd has 11 songs
July 22nd 2006: 1st cd has 17 songs, 2nd cd has 15 songs
July 23rd 2006: 1st cd has 18 songs, 2nd cd has 13 songs

5 out of 5 stars 9/10.......2007-07-07

Seven discs of live Pearl Jam for a reasonable price. I couldn't turn it down, even though I already own the July 22 show, which I also had the privilege of attending. It's a nice colorful box set of digipacks, the only downside being that it does not contain any liner notes or pictures of the shows.

But packaging aside, here is some vital information I assembled that might be useful to some of you who may be indecisive as to whether or not to acquire this box. I did a tally of all the songs and arranged them by era, based on the studio albums, so you can quickly see how many songs you're getting from whatever albums you love. Non-LP songs include b-sides and session songs. (Yeah, I was bored at work.) So here are the album-eras of Pearl Jam, followed by the number of songs performed live in this box set:

Ten ......... 12 (eight LP, four non-LP)
Vs. .......... 11 (nine LP, two non-LP)
Vitalogy .... 7
No Code .... 3
Yield ......... 5
Binaural .... 3 (two LP, one non-LP)
Riot Act .... 6 (four LP, two non-LP)
Pearl Jam ... 12
Covers ...... 8
Other ........ 3

Amidst the three long shows, totaling exactly 100 tracks (there are tracks not listed on Amazon for some reason), there are five threepeated songs (Evenflow, Alive, Corduroy, Given to Fly, and Yellow Ledbetter). As you can tell from the tally, it's a good mix of material; not entirely representative of every album, but most likely representative of the albums that the majority of people want to hear (i.e. Ten and Vs.). But all the performances are spot-on and well done by the band, and of course there's a lot of mid-song banter that gives that "realness" to the shows, and makes you feel like you were there even if you weren't. So if you're a fan, there's really no reason not to pick this up.

A couple of side notes: Among the "other" songs is a dual performance of Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns," which they have been playing fairly often in the past few years. I didn't think it fair to consider that a cover song. Also included in the later versions of Yellow Ledbetter is a Hendrix tribute that McCready has been squeezing in in recent shows, which includes excerpts from "Little Wing" and "The Star-spangled Banner," the former of which is covered as a separate track on the last disc.

3 out of 5 stars Very bland and slow...........2007-06-20

OK, I am heading on vacation and making a mixed CD for the trip. I bought this album and wondered how many tracks I would use from it for my mix...I figured it would take up most of my mix CD. Well, it will take up none of it. Compared to other live OAR shows it is slowed down, flat, and generic, there is no energy to it. I love OAR and was VERY excited to get this CD as their other ones are just grand and full of catchy energy. For one thing, Mark's vocals are just like him talking not singing....he just let's the echoed mike do the output for him. He also does alot of, I don't know how to explain it, but that wordy kind of talk you hear from jazzy beatniks, where he is filling in improv stuff. Unlike other shows where the improv stuff is catchy and slide in perfectly this sounds forced. The music is flawless but uninspiring, their is nothing like the bass/saxophone improv like "Chariots of Fire" on the previous live album. They just play along. They have totally lost that reggae/pop/rock/jam vibe and are now more adult/prog/top 40's.
I heard that the band is revisiting their old material and retooling it as they get older because they were kids when they originally did it. But, I gotta say what I am hearing recently from them isn't so great, it is like "adult" versions of their songs...very over produced and plain so it is radio friendly. I found myself thinking: what would I be doing at this show live, and the answer is I could see me sitting on a couch sipping a martini talking to friends and waiting for it to be over (and I dislike martinis but it seems to go with the feel of this show).
I hate to say this but I'll have to hear their next live or studio album first before purchasing, they aren't on my "must buy no matter what" list any more.

2 out of 5 stars Compared to 34th and 8th and Any Time Now, Live From Madison Square Garden is Nothing Special.......2007-06-08

After being a fan of O.A.R. for the past four years, their latest release is a big disapointment. I attended the concert with three friends and was fairly unimpressed after the concert. It had been my 8th time seeing the band in a little under four years. I had high hopes for the Cd but was severely depressed upon hearing the first song.

Growing to love O.A.R. over the past four years enlightened me to love their live shows/ cds much more than their bad quality studio albums. Live From Madison Square Garden, in this respect, is good because it shows the band in its live atmosphere. However, compared to the band's previous two live releases Any Time Now and 34th and 8th, the Cd flat out stinks. The best examples are the older songs such as Hey Girl, About Mr. Brown, That was a Crazy Game of Poker, and City on Down. The new release has possibly the worst versions of these particular songs. The improvisation within each song sound forced and are amateurish, and it seems like the band just tried too hard to make this release a good one. The difference of quality between the older cds is vast. 34th and 8th's "Crazy Game of Poker" is remarkable and possibly the best performance of the band on any one of their cds. Other songs on 34th and 8th and Any Time Now follow suit, i cannot think of a single song that is better at the Garden. Live At Madison Square tries to pack the same energy as the previous releases but sounds too generic in the process. The tone of the instruments, the guitar/ sax solos, freestyles, and even the set list are incredibly weak and do not satisfy the inner O.A.R. Fan that i have become.

On the upside, O.A.R. packs the release with a few new (and actually good) songs. Living in the End and Something Coming Over are good tunes. "Living" is a good pearl jam inspired song, and "SCO" is a cute diddy that everyone can enjoy.

Unfortunately, the Cd still does not come close to previous releases. Instead of buying Live from Madison Square Garden, buy 34th and 8th . . . it comes with an hour long dvd and two discs worth of music for the same price range and is a heck of a lot better. Any Time Now is just as good and I strongly recommened buying both. Unless you're a young O.A.R. fan i do not see a need to purchase this cd. If you loved Stories of a Stranger you probably would like this Cd, but if you hated it or thought it was nothing special, go with 34th and 8th.

5 out of 5 stars Great band, outstanding performance.......2007-06-07

I've been a fan of Dave Matthews' infectious live energy for over a decade and have always wondered if any band could compete with DMB for title of best live band. OAR is that band. If you're only loosely familiar with them through their recent radio releases like Love & Memories, Hey Girl, and Heard the World, you're in for a very pleasant surprise. Taking nothing away from the album versions of those songs, they are considerably better live.

This version of Crazy Game of Poker is unbelievable and will have you singing along & dancing in your chair for all 17 minutes. It's worth the price of the album just for that song. Other favorites include About Mr. Brown, Anyway, Lay Down, and of course, the concert closer City on Down.

Buy this album, you won't be disappointed. After you've heard how great they are in concert, you'll be yearning to see them live yourself.

5 out of 5 stars The Whoa! factor has just been established..!.......2007-06-06

Growing up on Any Time Now, my life can be described as me being a "pupil of O.A.R." I first picked up a guitar in 2001 and I hated the damn thing until I heard this band. When 34th & 8th rolled around it was like a Sweet 16 for my musical life. After a few years of seeing them live and listening to SOAS, O.A.R. has officially proven me wrong. I thought they were a great band and then they released Live from Madison Square Garden. Now I consider them the Best Band of the Modern Age. "The New Pink Floyd" is what I call them as I consider PF to be the best of years past.

Live from MSG packs 18 hits that will knock you from room to room, beer to beer and from smiles to tears. If O.A.R. wasn't underrated this would be the Album of the Year. From Love and Memories to City On Down this CD encompasses all the emotions we experience day in and day out of our lives. Each track holds within it a beat and message that transcends pop culture, politics and even religion. This music makes you look deep inside and ask yourself, "What do I believe, and what do I feel is true because the truth is all there is?" Coming from someone who loves to play and listen to music, I can officialy say this album gets the Whoa! factor. It is a story that, in the end, shows that normal guys from a little town can make it BIG just doing what they love. I know I long for that; do you?

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive O.A.R. Collection.......2007-06-06

Having followed O.A.R. from a time when they were only a locally known band, this is a very important release for not only them but everyone from or around Rockville, Maryland. So how does this show measure up to their others? Does it pack the same energy and feel that other, smaller venues have in the past?

The answer is a resounding yes. O.A.R. brings every ounce of energy they have and bursts to life on the first track 'Love and Memories'. The energy in singer Marc Roberge's voice is intoxicating. Unlike previous albums where at times he can sound burnt-out or drunk, throughout this entire performance he is giving it 110%, flowing with the rhythms of the music while maintaining every tracks original sound. Small improvisations are something we have come to expect from O.A.R. over the years and are delivered with catchy lines that will quickly slide into the original lyrics.

Music wise, the band is on point with every single song. The added keyboards/synthesizers are a very nice touch and add depth to some of their older songs. The set-list is an amazing repertoire of their finest works; ranging from their first album to their latest release. Each song is given an updated touch while remaining true to it's roots.

Overall this two disc live release from O.A.R. is something any fan, new or old should add to their collection. Even if every song doesn't have you dancing, it will surely have you singing along to the catchy tunes from this amazing band.

5 out of 5 stars Addendum.......2007-01-13

I have been a PJ fan since the mid-nineties and own hundreds of their albums, CDs, bootlegs, etc. So when I say to buy this I can't help being a little bit biased.

That aside, with no disrespect to reviewer Timothy J. Mccoy, this review was meant to make an addendum to his review: Only if you purchase this album straight from an independent record store would you be supporting said stores. Amazon is not an independent record store, and Live at Easy Street was released on J Records, owned and operated by Sony BMG. Nothing independent about that.

Also as a side note, if you are a bootleg collector, PJ performed 16 songs at this show, so if you are a completist you may want to find the complete show via audience recording.

4 out of 5 stars Just For Fans.......2007-01-06

If you're Pearl Jam Fan, you have to get this itme inside your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff .......2007-01-04

This EP is a nice addition for any collector of Pearl Jam, some rare cover tunes here and a surprised audience as well. Also when purchasing this you are supporting independent record stores as this is not on sale at Best Buy etc.

4 out of 5 stars So cool to stumble on this.......2006-08-18

We have been spoiled with a wealth of great Pearl Jam stuff lately with the new album, the VH1 Storytellers show and this.

The Pearl Jam songs are of course wonderful but I love the covers. These guys are my age so when they pull out covers of rockin' songs from my youth (Clash, Who, Split Enz, etc.) I get excited. I never thought of Pearl Jam as a hardcore band but Bleed For Me totally works and reeling in John Doe for a cover of New World is genius.

If you're a died-in-the-tie-dye fan, you've probably already heard a tape of this show and will be pleased to know that here it sounds amazing; the entire three hour performance is included, mixed and mastered off of original 16-track live master recordings. If you're not already a Deadhead, Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 is an excellent encapsulation of mid '70s Dead. Recorded in-between 1975's invigorating Blues for Allah and 1977's dreadfully myopic Terrapin Station, it's eminently preferable to the live album Steal Yr Face, and goes a long way towards showing that the critically-maligned Godchaux era had a lot going for it. A few of the songs lumber a bit, but there's a real funkiness and versatility to this segment of the band's career that they never really had at any other time. Several stages of the band's career converge, such that the elastically funky version of the late '70s Dead, the almost jazz-fusion Dead of the early '70s, and the soft cowboy folk sound of 1970 of are all here. It's lovely. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful ending for 1976.......2007-05-29

First 2007 release of the Grateful Dead (I hope there's more to come). "Live at the Cow Palace" features the complete show The Dead gave on New Year's Eve 1976. Nicely "digipaked", this set also includes a nice booklet with interesting liner notes which focus on (of course) the band, but also on the history of the Cow Palace. These notes point out the bad acoustics of this big hall, but forget about that for this set is beautifuly recorded and the sound quality is simply superb. All the instruments are clearly heard and the sound is certainly warm and tremendously enjoyable.
As for the performance, The Dead were surely inspired that evening. Let's take a brief look at the contents of this 3-cd set.

The first set, as it has happened with The Dead before, proves to be the less interesting. It starts off with "Promised Land", which is nice but doesn't say much. "Bertha" is played more slowly than the classic "Skull and Roses" version. "Mama Tried", in contrast, is played in a more hurried pace than on the aforementioned record. Anyway, there are both nice to hear. "They Love Each Other" proves to be a real treat. It includes a very strong piano solo by Keith Godchaux, and the band sounds very tight. Unfortunately, the results are not the same with "Looks Like Rain", where the group make a couple of easily detectable mistakes, apart from sounding uncomfortable with the song. A nice "Deal" brings the things back together and set the mood for a magnificent "Playing In The Band" which includes, as you can imagine, an extended, pure-beauty jam where everybody flies freely.

1977 started in Winterland with "Sugar Magnolia", and the second CD kicks off. A faster-than-usual and splendid-as-always "Eyes of the World" continues and segues into one of the most wonderful "Wharf Rat" versions I ever heard (a song that is naturally beautiful made even more beautiful. Can you picture that?). After this sonic Eden, we are taken back to reality with some interesting yet more earthy "Good Lovin'" and "Samson and Delilah". "Scarlet Begonias" closes the second CD in its usual relaxed, lovely and cheerful manner.

The last CD takes off with "Around And Around", which usually sounds (to these ears) just plain fair. This version is not the case, embellished with a effective rhythm change in the middle and a fantastic segue into a outstanding "Help On The Way/Slipknot!". Jerry Garcia expands his talent all over, and the band enters into an ethereal landscape where he can speak freely with them in a classic telephatic-empathic-Grateful-Dead-type manner. All this beauty derives in a very short "Drums" and the time comes for a pleasant "Not Fade Away" to distract the listener's mind before a sublime and touching "Morning Dew". "One More Saturday Night" follows and the show finds its proper ending with "Uncle John's Band" (including some usual lyrics confusion) and a simply wonderful "We Bid You Goodnight".
Well, top-notch Dead, warts and all.
A great night of a tremendously talented ensemble.

Post scriptum:
I still can't find the reason for all that detraction against Donna Jean. Go on and loathe her while I enjoy her voice, I don't care.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome new release from the Dead archive.......2007-05-20

There was a period in the late 90s up to a few years ago that the Dead released live albums from their rich back catalogue, including the seminole "Dick's Picks" releases. Things have been much quieter in the last 2-3 years. Among other things, the Dead have turned over further releases from their back catalogue to the well-respected Rhino label.

"Live At the Cow Palace, New Year's Eve, 1976" (3CDs, 22 tracks, 191 min.) brings the 12/31/76 show in its entirety, and the band is generally in great doings. Contrary to many other Dead fans, I've always enjoyed the Godchaux era, and this is as good as any from that era. Set one is somewhat slow in building up, but I love the 20+ min. blowout of Playing In the Band. CD2 brings a great Sugar Magnolia>Eyes of the World>Wharf Rat>Good Loving, but the real jewel on this set is CD3, with a great Slipknot!>Drums>Not Fade Away. Uncle John's Band in the encore is the cherry on top of the cake. Just an great evening of great music all around.

I have usually been impressed with the job Rhino has done with reissued and back catalogue issues, and they don't disappointed me here. Excellent packaging, great liner notes, pictures, it's all here. Bottom line: is this an "essential" live recording in the Dead's output? Probably not, but it certainly is a most enjoyable and welcome addition to the live catalogue of the Dead.

Unplugged and set apart from his bandmates, Dave Matthews is transformed from a fusion rocker to something of a fusion folkie. Indeed, this two-disc, two-man concert recording (cut in Iowa in the winter of 1996 and shelved for nearly three years) posits the South African-born bandleader less as a Blues Traveler fellow traveler than a dexterous, jazz-inflected minstrel in the tradition of Tim and Jeff Buckley, Terry Callier, and Ellen McIlwaine. As with those considerably less-successful performers, multiplatinum Matthews is enticed to soar ever higher by his considerable vocal prowess. Ultimately, Matthews takes his tunes in dizzying directions because he can! All those exhibitions of elasticity have earned Matthews disdain in less-is-more circles. Here, however, more than ably complemented by frequent DMB guest and fellow Charlottesville, Virginia, denizen Tim Reynolds, Matthews virtually bursts through 23 tunes that leave his audience wanting more. They needn't worry: even his worst critics wouldn't accuse Matthews of being stingy when it comes to music. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars best Dave Matthews.......2007-05-12

it is true dave in a rare unplugged form.... timmy is the best on the guitar, very relaxing

5 out of 5 stars Dave and Tim are white hot!!.......2007-05-09

I worship DM!! Dave and Timmy Reynolds chemistry is insane!! If you want a cd set where every, I mean every song is beautiful, and moving, then you have it right here! It's hard to write a review about something I'm so fond of. One disk is in my SUV and the other in my Dakota. My kids know almost all the words. Very kid friendly and the groove is incredible. Just buy it!! You will become a fanatic like me!! One Sweet World...........

5 out of 5 stars Two virtuoso's captured live.......2007-04-03

Unfortunately, you cannot capture the brilliance of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds live on an album. But this one comes close.

We saw this dynamic duo in Oxford England March 2007, as they played for more than three hours. Their performance live is unmatchable.

This album demonstrates yet again what an amazing songwriter, singer and acoustic guitar player Dave Matthews is...and it shows glimpses of the amazing talent that is Tim Reynolds. Dave's lyrics shine in this acoustic set more so than in DMB studio albums, as his voice becomes the third instrument in this duo. Through Dancing Nancies, #41, Dancing Nancies and Cry Freedom, Dave's songwriting expertise is more visible than with the full band. Tim Reynolds is amazing live and in person, and my one issue with this album is that his contributions aren't noticeable unless you know what you are listening for. But you can certainly hear his lead licks on #41, Dancing Nancies and Say Goodbye.

And it took me awhile, but I recognized the acoustic "Little Thing" (something "Dave and Timmy had been working on") as "An' Another Thing" from Some Devil...both versions are great.

An excellent album, see them in concert if you get the chance.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Matthews Band Classic.......2007-02-12

I remember growing up and not really paying that much attention to Dave at first. Then someone played this CD in my friend's car. Instantly, I got to experience the real sound of Dave and just fell in love with his music. Now, as a true DMB fan, I always refer back to this CD as one of my favorites. Tim & Dave together - you can't ever go wrong. A couple of my favs are Deed is Done and Little Thing (which becomes An Another Thing on Some Devil, but sounds much better here). And I will always prefer the LIVE sound of Dave over a recording studio anyday. Something about his live performances is just phenomenal. If you don't already have it, I suggest it highly!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2007-02-08

Simply stated, this CD is not only worth puchasing, but is a necessity to the collection of any acoustic guitar fiends, and certainly, every Dave fan. Each song is a divine lesson in guitar playing in itself.

If you were to buy one DMB CD, make it this one. An absolute must-have.

Highlights:
Dancing Nancies, greatest version out there
Crash Into Me, likewise
Jimi Thing
Warehouse

Enjoy. You can't go wrong with this album.

This live album from DMB is mind blowing. Sound is great. Absolutely a CD that should be picked up by any DMB fan.

5 out of 5 stars This Show was freakin' outrageous.......2007-03-26

I went to this show and it was unbelievable. It was one of the best Dave shows that I have ever been to and I have been going to Dave shows for over ten years. I have not listened to the CD yet, (as I just ordered it), but again, the show was incredible, especially being at the famous Fenway Park. Even if you are not a diehard DMB fan, you will enjoy this show. Definitely work the money.

5 out of 5 stars "Just in case y'all were wondering...I love that song too".......2007-03-22

Dave says that during this show after finishing a couple great tunes. What does that tell you?

If you've been to a show or two, you know that Dave Matthews Band is a superlative live act. This recording delivers excellent sound quality with a setlist that demonstrates how so many old favorites from the first 4-5 albums have evolved into epic jams. Grace is Gone ends with a Hoedown Jam, just sweet...A Super Funk 17:57 Jimi Thing. Fenway delivers great future classics such as Break Free, Idea of You, and Can't Stop. Quite simply, I listen to DMB everyday and this is the best single concert I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD.......2007-02-18

Have ever single dave cd every made and this one is by far one of the best ones. The quality and sounds are so good its like your right there listening to him. Dave is one of the best of all time and if you like dave then this is a essential to your dave collection.

This 4-disc set is a MUST OWN for any DMB fan from Beantown. Amazing set lists on both nights, one-of-a-kind recordings (Sweet Caroline), mind-altering solos, and fiery tracks belted out like only Dave can do. Buy it; you will not be disappointed.

Amazon.com essential recording

Like a lot of his jam-band compatriots, Dave Matthews's personality can come off as muted in the studio, but really spreads out live--which makes this a must-have for fans who don't already have the bootleg, or nineteen more from the same period. But absent a hits sampler, Live at Red Rocks could also be the best Matthews album for more tentative listeners. It draws heavily from the Under the Table and Dreaming material, as well as from the then-upcoming Crash. "All Along the Watchtower," previously only available on an indie EP, ends the set. --Gavin McNett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars They Rock at Red Rocks!.......2007-03-20

Even a live recording of the Dave Matthews Band is an ideal way to be exposed to their immense talent for the first time. This is an early recording of the group, a live performance during the summer of 1995 but further proof of how great they sounded as a live act from the beginning years. Most of the material contained here are songs from their major debut, Under the Table and Dreaming, but they do include songs that were brand new and being tested at the time, and that would eventually turn up on 1996's Crash like "Two Step," "Dive In, Drive Out," and "Proudest Monkey." There are also songs the band recorded very early on before they had a major recording contract like this show's opener in "Seek Up," one of the band's best tracks and this thirteen-minute version is a spectacular performance with smooth horns, throbbing bass lines, and Tinsley's humming violin solo that leads into Matthews' agonizing vocal. "The Best of What's Around," is like rock being fused with jazz, and "Dancing Nancies," is intense, explosive, and relentless in the way the band jams out with a climatic ending. Plus there's "Lie in Our Graves," "Ants Marching," and concluding with a tribute to the late Jimi Hendrix with an amazing version of "All Along the Watchtower." The whole set list is awesome considering how early a recording this is for the band. Another thing that makes this release so unique is how the Dave Matthews Band brought back the whole concept of recording and releasing live albums for the commerical market, and reminding music lovers how we once loved the idea of having a live concert in our living room.

5 out of 5 stars DMB ROCKS AT RED ROCK!.......2006-04-10

If "Louisiana Bayou" on the DVD with Robert Randolph doesn't do it for you, you are already dead. Jammin' DMB at their best!

4 out of 5 stars Good Effort.......2006-01-29

I really dont like Dave Matthews music that much, but there is one thing that you have to give him and his band credit for. They are very very good musicans. This is the one album that they have that I happen to like, since I think the Live Material is much better then any of the studio work. This is a good concert to listen to, and I highly recommend it to anyone who just wants to kick back and listen to some real good jams. ENJOY

1997: This wonderful Album is released
1998: Before These Crowded Srteets is released
2000: The Lilywhite Sessions are left
2001: Everyday is released; The Lillywhite Sessions are leaked
2002: Busted Stuff is released
2005: Stand Up is released.

bow alot has changed in 10 years, and so has DMB's sound.

This 2 disc jam fest may be a shock to newer DMB fans, who are used to the radio hits.

while there are a few of those on here, they're not this recordings best stuff.

RR95 (as hardcore fans have abbriviated it) starts off with Seek Up, which dictates the pace for the rest of the concert.

the first disc is golden, straying from the radio singles(except for Satlelite which is amazing on this recording)

the second disc doesn't stop that vibe, and makes this truely a greeat live album.

With a slate of more than 200 shows a year, Ben Harper has never been an album-tour-album-tour kind of artist; for him and his fans, the stage is the ultimate proving ground. So after four studio albums, Harper has finally released his first official live set, a 25-song double-disc collection that surveys each of his four albums and adds a couple of well-executed, if not terribly inventive, covers. Disc one is electric and finds Harper and the Innocent Criminals tearing through their patented mix of rock, folk, soul, and blues. Yet, the solo-acoustic disc two is the true prize, putting the spotlight squarely on Harper's incredibly agile, versatile, and enormously moving voice. In this pared-down setting, Harper shows an uncanny ability to connect with his audience, offering one spellbinding performance after another. Culled from two years' worth of shows--no two songs are taken from the same concert--Live from Mars provides a welcome overview of Harper's many facets. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Album I've Ever Purchased.......2007-02-08

Title says it all. This is the most amazing live album I've ever bought. From the harder riffs on Ground On Down and Excuse Me Mr. to the softer soulful Not Fire, Not Ice this album is amazing. Then there's Please Bleed, The Drugs Don't Work, Walk Away, and Roses From My Friends. If these songs don't tear at your heart then you've never been in love or music just might not be for you. Along with Blessed To Be A Witness they are some of the most powerfully moving songs I've ever listened to and the live recordings just add to it. I have nothin bad to say about this except that even at 25 songs IT'S TOO SHORT! I wanted even more live songs!!! Just an incredible piece of work. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars worthy.......2006-08-11

this recording doent fully convey the essence of his concerts. there are better recordings of each song one can find on morpheus or limewire. It is worth the money spent however, i just found that there were a lot more worthy performances of his out there.

5 out of 5 stars To dig his music, you must bleed.......2006-07-22

Harper is one of the most eclectic and soulful artists that I've heard in my life and each time I listen to this live concert, it turns me inside out. When I am unable to understand my rage, my pain or pride, my bleeding, my state of mourning, my yearning for a lover, I play Woman in You, and I howl (shamelessly) along with Ben Harper, without censoring my fall and then my rise.
"Like a King" is one of the most harrowing songs, it goes back to the roots, an old gospel in form with a new story of another black man slipping into the cracks of this system. Originally written by Maya Angelou ("Still I Rise"), Harper added his own words, politicizing the song furthermore by introducing the name of King. "You may write me down in history / With your bitter, twisted lies, / You may trod me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I'll rise." The gospel is dedicated to Martin L. King and Rodney King, both victims of white American terrorism. "You may shoot me with your words, / You may cut me with your eyes, / You may kill me with your hatefulness, / But still, like air, I'll rise." The soul of this song is old and new at the same time. It's meaningful in many ways, and the broken down chords are slow and grave. I weep each time I listen to "Like a King," and I bleed with Harper, because that's the only way to dig his music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Album.......2006-07-01

If you have never heard any Ben Harper, or if you are the world's biggest Ben fan...this is the album for you! The double disc set really shows off Ben's versatility, grace, and style. This is one of my favorite albums of all time...it always makes me feel like I'm right at the show.

Buy it immediately!!!

5 out of 5 stars Just so Pretty .......2006-02-14

ben harper plays the most thougtful music out today, but more importantly, his voice and his melodies really stand out as on-key and haunting, lifting and light. some of my favorites are glory and consequence (very lenny kravitz meets led zepplin)and the drugs dont work (tearjerker).

Worth the time !!!!!!

To loosely paraphrase the traditional Passover question: What makes this Dave Matthews live album different from the last one he recorded at Denver's Red Rocks amphitheater a decade previously? There's a savory cover of The Zombies' chestnut "Time of the Season" strategically frontloaded, but this edition revolves largely around the Stand Up album he was ostensibly promoting on this '05 tour stand at his beloved Rocks, as witnessed by focused renditions of the title track, "American Baby" and "Dream Girl" here. But as the set's workout of "Louisiana Bayou" forcefully argues, their sense of energetic economy (and occasional, timely politicking) infuses much of the rest of Matthews jamfest ethos with renewed muscular wallop as well. The presence of a horn section and guest keyboardist Butch Taylor on some tracks ups the ante considerably, though even core band renditions of staples like disc one's expansive closer "Bartender" seem charged with renewed passion. The running order here occasionally betrays the collection was edited from four nights and a considerably wider range of performances, but the included bonus DVD gratifyingly expands upon the audio rather than simply replicating it with complimentary performances of "Crash Into Me," "Recently" and "Jimi Thing." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for DMB guys.......2007-06-06

I'm a huge DMB fan and I only have one other concert DVD. The Central Park Concert has been a great thing for me to pop in when I want to get to see them play most of my favorite songs, but it started getting old for me so I decided to get this as my second DVD to freshen things up, and it was a very good choice. Good song selection that is a little bit different from the mainstream stuff you see and I like the camera angles. The band goes crazy on Louisiana Bayou and it's very fun to see Randolph there as a guest. Everybody Wake Up is very cool, So Much To Say and Too Much are also awesome as well, and Dreamgirl is a nice mellow one. On the CD I would say that Don't Burn the Pig is a great song and I also enjoyed Stolen Away, Smooth Rider, and Hunger For the Great Light. If you want the main DMB songs, buy Central Park. If you want a variety of new songs, buy this next.

5 out of 5 stars Weekend on the Rocks Live.......2007-05-15

Love Dave Matthews anyway awesome DVD and cd /they only show part of the 4 day show that they put on i would love to have seen all 4 days of it i play the cd in the truck all the time it's great

5 out of 5 stars Awsome.......2007-01-04

Dave Matthews have released so many live CD and this one is another collection of their great live CD!

It's amazing how much they could play the same songs they have been playing for couple years! People still loves to hear what they offer. It's amazing.

Dave Matthews Band is kinda band you could listen to their songs 41 times and still feel fresh.

4 out of 5 stars Dave almost at his best.......2006-11-20

I liked the cd for the most part. Dave Matthews Band has their own music genre. Nothing like them. This, however, wasn't my favorite Dave CD. Since it was live, Dave got a little caught up in the moment, and I don't like how he strains his voice a lot in this cd. Still pretty freaking awesome though.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible - wish there was more!.......2006-10-22

I'm a DMB obsessive, and this album was a huge addition to my collection. I've been stuck on all the old stuff and haven't really gotten into the new stuff until i bought this one. On the cd's, the highlights for me are Don't Burn the Pig, #41 (one of DMB's all time best!) and Smooth Rider. The entire DVD is brilliant, but the ones that stand out: Dreamgirl, Louisiana Bayou, Recently and Jimi Thing. If a non-DMB fan watches Recently on the DVD and is not a fan afterwards, they have serious issues. The only issue I have is that I wish there was more on the both the CD's and DVD!
Buy it - you won't regret it for a second!

Think what you will of the Dave Matthews Band but they certainly know how to keep their fans satisfied. Just eight months after the release of the lavish Central Park Concert package comes another generous helping of live material, this time in a limited edition three-disc set compiled at the band's 2002 concerts at Washington State's scenic Gorge, one of its favorite venues. With more than three-hours of music and video, recorded in 5.1 audio and shot with over 20 high-definition video cameras, even fans that missed the shows will feel the mosquitoes buzzing around their ears. And it's easy to see why Seattle resident Dave Matthews and his cohorts feel at home here--the natural backdrop provides the perfect setting for their gently inspiring music. "I feel like I'm making a racket in a place that should be quiet," the frontman says at one point in the documentary, which may suggest why this is a more reverential, detail-oriented performance than its Manhattan predecessor, particularly in songs like the acoustic "Gravedigger" and the leisurely 15-minute-plus version of "Lie In Our Graves." --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars They're ready to entertain and enlighten at the scenic Gorge.......2006-12-03

The sound and style of the Dave Matthews Band gets better with every concert, every studio release, every live performance, and they possess the uncanny ability to sound different every time they play, but always adding more depth to their musicanship without even trying. If any fan or even mere listener has never seen or listened to the band live, this CD/DVD set would be a great invitation to experience the energy this band puts forth to the stage. The two CD portion contains some of the best classics like "Rapunzel," "Song That Jane Likes," "Fool to Think," "Drive In, Drive Out," "Space Between," "Two Step," and "Lie in Our Graves," among many others. The DVD portion only illustrates the energy and talent this band brings to the stage. Performing at Washington's Gorge, one of the band's favorite venues, they bring many classics to life again such as "Dancing Nancies," "Seek Up," "Ants Marching," "Tripping Billies," and a terrific opener with "Grey Street." Whether you're listening to the CD or enjoying the DVD concert, you'll be engaged by how well these guys can bring many different sounds and varieties of music together. And if you're already familiar with the DMB as a live act, you'll only see and hear how each version of a classic they perform somehow sounds different and deeper than the last. Quite simply, this release demonstrates the magic that is the Dave Matthews Band.

5 out of 5 stars Live at The Gorge.......2006-07-17

If you love and appreciate the art these guys produce from creating a variety of music styles, then this CD & DVD combo and all of the rest of them are for you... I Do

3 out of 5 stars I'm disappointed..........2006-05-05

I'm a huge DMB fan and I have every released live CD along with several bootlegs. Now I have this 6 CD set of "The Gorge" too and it's disappointing compared to other live releases.

When I heard "Satellite" hoping it to be a great performance (the only really good performance I know of "Satellite" is actually the one from the "Lost Acoustics", Dave with just Tim Reynolds) I was pretty shocked when I heard Dave trying to sing those high notes. As if that's not bad enough his voice sucks on a lot of other songs too, not to mention the overall bad quality of the recordings!

This is definetly not something for starters of DMB... I'd say go get the "Central Park Concert", "Live At Red Rocks", "Live At Luther College" or the "Complete Weekend On The Rocks 8 CD set" to start with, "The Gorge" should be ordered the last one and only if you're a hardcore fan!

5 out of 5 stars DVD alone worth the price.......2006-04-15

I own a number of concert DVD's, and have to say that the DVD alone is worth the price of this set. It's a great "best of" concert.

5 out of 5 stars After all, a good Lie in Our Graves live version!!!.......2005-10-23

There is not that much to say:
1. This album is great because it tries to cover songs that are most of the time left aside in live performances (like Song that Jane Likes, You never Know, Everyday, kit Kat Jam, and so on)
2. It contains a nice dvd that comes along with the two equally satisfying CDs.
3. Here's the main reason of having/loving this album : LIE IN OUR GRAVES. This 17 minits version is amazing!! this was a song they never quite got well in show, the special atmosphere of the quiet part was always not as intimate and emotional as on the studio version. But this time, THIS IS IT!! Everyone is at the top of their skill, and the piano part is very well introduced.
4. Other standouts:
- Song that Janes like: good energy, it is beautifull and not too long, just enough to wonder why they don't play it more
- You never know : i just realized this song is good listening to this version.
- Evryday : the sing along is not annoying, but really fits in the atmosphere created. Pretty different from the original, but real nice, alotough somewhat low-key.
- Warehouse: Good version. Energetic, tight, without never-ending jams.

The only disapointing part is:
Two Step is way too long, way too improvisational, way too annoying after a few minutes of drums only. Skip it,I reckon.

Bottom line : I think this is my fav DMB live with Live at RedRocks (which is THE classic, by the way).
